Italian PM Proposes Foreign Student Cap, Burqa & Niqab School Ban

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced plans for new school policies that would limit the concentration of foreign students in individual classrooms and prohibit burqas and niqabs in educational institutions.

Meloni says the proposals are intended to support integration, protect Italian cultural identity and prevent students who do not speak Italian from becoming isolated. She also wants parents of foreign pupils facing serious integration difficulties to take mandatory Italian-language lessons.

“There’s no way that in an Italian classroom, the ones who feel marginalized are Italian children because they have become a minority,” Meloni said.

“For us, anyone who comes to Italy and wants to build their future here must learn our language, understand our culture, and respect our rules,” she added.

“It is the only serious way to welcome them.”

Meloni also explained her concerns about classrooms with large numbers of students who struggle with Italian.

“If in a classroom there is only one child who doesn’t understand Italian, it is possible that that child will manage, with the help of his peers and teachers, to learn the language and integrate fast,” she said.

“But if these children are many, or even the majority, that’s not integration anymore, that’s abandonment.”

The proposals still need to go through Italy’s Council of Ministers and Parliament.
