00:00You know, one of my favorite football players in all the National Football League is Jaden Daniels.
00:06Got a chance to meet the kid, got a chance to vote for the kid for the Heisman Trophy.
00:11And we've had Herm Edwards on this program before.
00:15Herm had him when he was at Arizona State.
00:17And he is one of the absolutely greatest people, I'm talking Jaden Daniels, that you can have represent your organization.
00:25Herm said that when he was at Arizona State, it was all about team, it was all about him being
00:30able to motivate his football team and going on and winning games.
00:33Some of the things you see in the media as of late, not really a characteristic of who the kid
00:38is.
00:39He's a great talent, former rookie of the year.
00:42But here is the most important thing that you have to remember when you're talking about NFL talent.
00:47As great as you are, availability is one of the most important things that you're going to evaluate with a
00:54player.
00:55You see, he gets stepped on here.
00:57He ends up hyperextending his elbow here, and he's out.
01:03Availability is one of the most important things that a quarterback can have for a franchise.
01:09How do you build a franchise around a quarterback who's never available?
01:14I don't care what type of talent you are, and I don't care what type of situation when people say
01:20how gifted he is.
01:21And he is one of the more gifted players.
01:24This reminds me a little bit of RG3 2.0.
01:28RG3 was absolutely going to be an electric player, former rookie of the year himself.
01:33But make no mistake about it, availability has to be part of an evaluation of a player if you're going
01:40to build that franchise around that quarterback.
01:42You look at Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia, this guy rarely misses games.
01:46Look at Josh Allen in Buffalo, rarely misses games.
01:51Dan Quinn and the Washington Commanders really have an issue here when it comes to his availability.
01:57And, you know, he was being questioned about the play call at that moment in the game where Daniels ended
02:05up getting injured.
02:05Yeah, I thought, like, looking back on it, like, you know, that one-yard line, we had touchdowns, John.
02:12And so I don't regret the call.
02:13I was saying, like, any time someone's injured, you play the what-if game.
02:16I don't think this is one of those times for me.
02:18I hate that it happened.
02:20I didn't see it.
02:21You guys may have stepped on first.
02:22I still hadn't seen it yet.
02:23But I wasn't hesitant about going into that spot.
02:28I thought, man, like, we're going to be aggressive into this game against their offense.
02:31So I don't regret that, John.
02:33Obviously, the outcome sucks.
02:35But it wasn't.
02:36I wish I had done something to me.
02:39You cannot have a defensive-minded head coach in control of your quarterback.
02:46And this is exactly what the Buffalo Bills knew.
02:49That's why they got rid of Sean McDermott and put in an offensive-minded guy.
02:55You know why?
02:56Your head coach has to protect you.
02:59Your head coach has to know your vulnerabilities, has to know that that guy getting hit is an
03:07essential part of the success of the Washington Commanders.
03:10You can't have a defensive-minded guy in charge of your football team, especially when you've
03:17got a franchise-type quarterback.
03:19He's going to take more risk.
03:21He's going to be more aggressive.
03:23And listen, I'm a fan of Dan Quinn as a coordinator.
03:28Dan Quinn is one of the best defensive-minded guys.
03:30Of course, he's going to take risk.
03:32Of course, he's going to take the opportunity to jam his quarterback in there.
03:37If you know that quarterback a year ago was banged up the way he was, dude, running a quarterback
03:44down on the goal line is not where you want to be.
03:47And take a look at that schedule again for the Washington Commanders coming up.
03:52I mean, look at that schedule that you're talking about that you may be with Marcus Mariota and
03:57may be without Jaden Daniels.
04:00You've got the Seahawks who, by the way, Drew Locke, you'll have to pinch me, but I thought
04:06that was Sam Darnold throwing the ball this past weekend.
04:08Then you've got the Colts.
04:10You've got the Giants who are a very physical football team.
04:13Then you've got the 49ers.
04:15After the bye, you've got Eagles, Rams, Giants, and Bengals.
04:22You're talking about a football team that may only have two wins.
04:25And if your quarterback is sidelined, you have no shot.
04:29Look, a couple years ago when they went to the NFC Championship game, it was a remarkable
04:34run by that football team that would go on and win 12 football games.
04:39Daniels is an electric player, but you've got to do this.
04:43You've got to make sure you get a running game around that player for you to be able to protect
04:48that player or you're going to be in the situation that you're in.
04:52Look, I think D.C.'s got a problem now.
04:56And D.C.'s problem is this.
04:58That quarterback can't stay healthy.
05:00Some quarterbacks and some football players are not built for this league.
05:04Some guys are just not going to be healthy.
05:07Some guys are just not going to be available.
05:09We see this all the time.
05:11We saw this with one of the greatest football players in the history of the National Football
05:15League and Bo Jackson.
05:16As great as Bo was, couldn't stay healthy.
05:20And then when his hip went, it was over.
05:23Boy, at the end of this year, if Jaden Daniels for a second straight year is not able to stay
05:29upright in D.C.
05:32I mean, Adam Peters, the general manager, and those folks in D.C., you have to start looking
05:37at maybe you have a quarterback problem.
05:40They're in the nation's capital, and you may have to go and get a new one.
