00:00All right, let's get into the team there in Oxnard, obviously in training camp right now.
00:05How much of an impact do you believe the new D.C. is going to make coming over from Philadelphia
00:10and Vic Fangio, Christian Parker?
00:12Last year, it was a tale of two sides of the football, right?
00:16Number one offense in the NFL, one of the worst defenses in pro football.
00:20What do you think the impact he makes on his team this year?
00:23It's already being felt, and it's all words, as you know, Dan, until they start playing games and there are
00:30results.
00:32But, you know, I've known Matt Eberflus for a long time.
00:37I think he's a really good football coach.
00:41Obviously, the 49ers think he's a good football coach.
00:43He's now their assistant head coach.
00:46But Matt, there were two things that hampered him last year.
00:50One was he didn't have very many good players.
00:53And in some position groups, they were really bad.
00:57And then he was really intractable in the way he used them.
01:02You know better than most people.
01:05You have a plan.
01:07You build your team.
01:08You build your game plan.
01:09You build your scheme.
01:11But the players have to be able to execute it.
01:14And if you're trying to do something that the players are not suited to do, you will not succeed.
01:19And it appeared, Matt's coached a lot longer than me, but it appeared that Matt said, this is how we're
01:26going to play.
01:27And his players just didn't have the ability to play that way.
01:30So Parker's different.
01:33I mean, they had to make a change.
01:35And they have changed about as drastically as they can.
01:39There's only one member of the defensive coaching staff left.
01:42They've turned the whole thing over.
01:43One of the things they did well last year on offense was hire a young staff.
01:51Clayton Adams was the offensive line coach with the Cardinals.
01:55And he was the offensive coordinator last year.
01:59And they hired a whole bunch of young guys.
02:01Not all of them were real young, but some of them had been in college football most of their careers.
02:07Many of them didn't know each other.
02:08That's the case with this defensive group.
02:11They let Brian Schottenheimer and Parker hire their staff.
02:16And they cast a wide net.
02:19They knew who they wanted.
02:20So what they've got is a really enthusiastic, they've got a completely different scheme.
02:25And they've changed the players out almost completely.
02:28I mean, I think, I don't know who the most 11 used defensive players were last year.
02:35But I'll bet there's not three of them back.
02:39And they've got a vastly changed roster of players.
02:45A completely changed defensive coaching staff.
02:49Young, enthusiastic, all about communication, all about adjustments and adaptability.
02:56So there's a lot of excitement.
02:58Who knows how good they'll be?
02:59But there's a lot of excitement about the fact that it's so different.
03:03And the players seem to be pretty good and really enthusiastic.
03:07It'll be fun to watch them grow.
03:09And grow is the key word.
03:10Look, whatever they are on September, whatever it is when they play the Giants in the Sunday night opener,
03:17whatever they are that day, they'll be better at the end of October.
03:23And whatever they are at the end of October, they'll be better in the middle of December.
03:28Now, will all of that be enough to get them where they want to go?
03:31I have no idea.
03:32That's why they're going to play the games.
03:35But it will be fun to watch them grow for sure.
