00:00even if you want to go on a unit with the defensive line to overshadow what Deion Walker
00:06has been doing. I didn't think I'd be starting with Deion Walker take because of everything
00:12else that happened, especially on the offensive side of the ball. But just with that intro,
00:17Greg Rousseau, we're talking about defensive player of the year. It's only two weeks,
00:22but everybody's got their power rankings. He's got, I'll give you the exact number.
00:28I think it's just a shade shy of a gazillion quarterback hits. And then he's got the four
00:35sacks and the three strip sacks. He's got a couple of passes defensed. And then Deion Walker has just
00:42been a wrecker. And you take out Ed Oliver, he's got the hip injury before the game. We don't really
00:47know much more about him, but Deion Walker was just borderline obscene in there last night.
00:53He's so violent and yet graceful. It's really something to watch, watching him move around
01:02at that size and do the things to offensive linemen at 22 years old that he's doing. It is
01:09really, really, really exciting to think about what he could be at 26, 27 years old.
01:16You know what he's going to be at 26 or 27? An all pro? Filthy rich. That too. Filthy rich.
01:22Yeah. Fourth round draft pick out of Kentucky because he slid. He had some back problems in
01:28his junior year. Probably would have been a first round pick if he came out as a sophomore,
01:33wanted to go back to Kentucky. It's part of the thing that makes up who Deion Walker is and why
01:39the bills, but also why everybody who's ever been around the guy loves him. Loyal. Stayed
01:46in Kentucky too, even with all the NIL money, could have gone to a much bigger school like
01:50an Alabama or a Clemson or one of the big to-dos, but he wanted to stay at Kentucky.
01:57The Wildcats recruited him, and so that's where he wanted to keep coming back. And then of course
02:03at some point, hey man, you're leaving money on the table, even with NIL. Right. To go
02:09back for a senior year would probably have been overkill, but he's overkilling offensive linemen
02:15out these first couple of days. Speaking of guys who can do anything, you've heard of this
02:20Josh Allen. Once or twice, yeah. Here's the thing about Josh Allen. We've said about all we can say
02:26about this guy, and we are watching greatness. I've said it for a couple of years. I know that
02:33you can make the case for Jim Kelly. You can make the case for O.J. Simpson and Bruce Smith.
02:38In fact, I think Bruce Smith is my score to beat in this conversation that I'm about to roll out
02:44as the greatest Bill of all time, despite no Super Bowl appearances. He just does things that
02:52we haven't seen before, not in Buffalo, but in the game of football. To wit. Just saw this stat
03:01before we came on the air. Josh Allen has nine touchdowns already this year. Okay. How many
03:09weeks in are we? How about this? How many days in are we? In the span of five days, it
03:16has happened
03:16only once before in NFL history that someone has scored nine-plus touchdowns in a five-day span.
03:27I would say, hey, Owen, why don't you take a stab at it, but we will be here all day.
03:32Yeah.
03:35The Chicago Cardinals, and prior to the Chicago Cardinals, he played for the Duluth Eskimos.
03:43Wow. Ernie Nevers ran for all nine of his touchdowns in five days. Ernie Nevers, the
03:49Pro Football Hall of Famer. This was in 1929. Never would have gotten it. Hey-oh! Woo! Here
03:56we go. Sorry, continue. Josh Allen, five passing, four rushing. Now, technically, he doesn't get
04:01credit for all of those touchdowns, because the person he throws the ball to gets the touchdown.
04:05Sure. But still, even if you throw in, this includes the passing, obviously, because Josh
04:12Allen's the first to have done it in 97 years. So far this year, he has, again, the nine
04:21touchdowns after doing what he did in Houston. And then last night, I'm taking out victory
04:26formation, because that throttles your yards per carry. He had 11 attempts for 72 yards and
04:33two rushing touchdowns, 20 of 31, 248, three passing touchdowns, no interceptions, no turnovers.
04:41He did fumble, but it was recovered by the Bills. So, look, I've thought about this for a long
04:49time, too. I probably should have done this story for the Athletic at some point, but I
04:53haven't gotten around to it. 8-0-3-0-5-50. What can't Josh Allen do? And I don't mean
05:03just
05:03on a football field. He's caught touchdown passes. He had the lateral from Amari Cooper
05:09involved in his own impromptu hook and lateral. Right.
05:14But here's a guy, in any facet we've seen him, has looked like one of the best to ever...
05:23Well, okay. I'm getting a little hyperbolic here. Sure. But when you see him in a commercial
05:32versus another athlete in a commercial, Patrick Mahomes, for instance. But you can name most
05:38athletes. J.J. Watt was in a lot of commercials there while he was playing. Baker Mayfield's
05:43in a lot of commercials. Baker Mayfield does a pretty good job with those commercials.
05:46Yes, he does. But Josh Allen seems like he is an actor. He's not just a guy in commercials.
05:51He's really good at it. He is.
05:56Like, this predates you. Did you ever see Blue Chips, the basketball movie? Yes.
06:00But Penny Hardaway and Shaq, they were in it. Right. Shaq looked a little stiff, but Penny Hardaway
06:05was great. He was fantastic. Yep.
06:07Josh Allen looks like he probably could be in a movie and not just a Brian Bosworth action
06:14movie where you just set him up with a bunch of explosions and things like that.
06:18Make him look real cool. He could actually act. He'd be awesome in an alternate version
06:25of the other guys or something. Yes. As a comedy action guy, he'd be great. And who knows?
06:31Once he got his legs under him, maybe he can do some emo stuff. Sure.
06:34Maybe he could actually do Gravitas and like John Belushi went from Animal House to doing
06:40serious stuff. The Continental Divide. All these comedians would end up with Adam Sandler.
06:45Adam Sandler and Uncut Gems. Yes.
06:47They can't help themselves. No. They have to. Steve Martin. So you have that. Maybe he's
06:54a Hugh Jackman type. We haven't seen him sing or dance yet. Maybe he can tap dance. We don't
06:58know. Dancing with the stars. He'd probably do well. You'd have to think. Politics. I have
07:06never covered anybody. Lindy Ruff may be an exception. But Lindy Ruff was far older. But
07:14to be able to command a news conference or any situation. Now, Lindy Ruff is more unvarnished
07:21in a good way. Raw. More transparent. He will tell you the truth. Sometimes Josh Allen
07:27is a little too polished. Subversive almost. Yeah. The Nickel City uniforms. Talking about
07:33how the grass. I've heard from the players last night. Most of them. We'll get into the
07:37grass if you want later on in the show. But the players are kind of a little more middle
07:41of the road. But Josh, he's going to be the ambassador for the Buffalo Bills. And his voice
07:46sets the tone for what everybody thinks. And he knows it. And he does a great job at
07:50it. I was talking with another reporter last night. I think it was Joe Biscaglia, The
07:54Athletic. But about how even the softball questions or the easy questions, he will take back to
08:03the middle. So he definitely handles the difficult question, whether it's about Ed Oliver and Ed
08:10Oliver's son. He was the one that was appointed kind of the team spokesman as opposed to the
08:14PR person. No, let's have Josh Allen do it. He'll do it better than anybody. He'll do it
08:19better than the professionals. And it'll resonate. Right. But also the easy questions. He's constantly
08:26like pulling it, pulling it, everything kind of to the middle. He's funneling it. I think
08:29he's conditioned. But he's so good at it. Very. We have Jack Kemp and Bill Bradley. And
08:35we've had all kinds of former athletes turn politicians. He could run for governor of Wyoming
08:41and win. Almost certainly. He could run for probably congressmen in the San Joaquin Valley
08:47where he's from and get involved in agriculture lawmaking. This is a guy, by the way, I went
08:54back and looked. I went out to Fireball prior to his rookie year and did a story about who
09:01this guy is and his family. And he comes from that Allen Ranch and that's been covered.
09:07Cantaloupes, pistachios, almonds, 2,000 acres out there in the San Joaquin Valley.
09:12And I recalled something in my research about him being a star in the Future Farmers of America
09:18program growing up in high school. So I went back and looked. And sure enough, in my notes,
09:23I found it. He has what's called the American degree from the FAA.
09:28Sounds prestigious.
09:29One half of 1% of all the members in the Future Farmers of America reached this.
09:33So he excelled at that. He didn't just do it as a feather in the cap sort of resume.
09:39Yeah, just as something to do. He was the president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
09:44I'm surprised he's not more involved. Well, maybe because he is the politician. He doesn't
09:48want to get too far into union stuff, but he's not the player rep. Bradley Chubb is, by the way.
09:54So I know that that's a lot, but what I dare you to call in. I don't want to say

10:52I mean, he's only 30. Where else can we go? We've got a long list already. It really,
11:01truly... I mean, we've spent all morning with Jeremy and Joe before us. I spent all of last
11:07night, it really is incredible that this is a player that we all get to not only watch,
11:17not only cheer for, but identify with and love, really. Like, this town loves that guy.
11:26You heard Al Michaels last night. This town, he loves this town and they love him back.
11:30And I don't... Name an athlete where that is more true of his town and his team.
11:35I will say this about Josh Allen, though. I think that he, again, it goes with the theme
11:40of what we're talking about. He could do whatever he wants to do. And of course, he's had so many
11:45quips about Buffalo. He'd always mention early on, he was savvy enough to say, nah, but with
11:52blue cheese now, not ranch, or there's only one team in New York. That's not... Somebody would talk
11:58about the Giants or the Jets and he would swing it back. He would be the perfect player in Pittsburgh,
12:06in Denver, with the Rams. Sure.
12:09He has fit it. He fits in in Hollywood. He's on the red... He's as comfortable on the red carpet
12:14as he is on that cantaloupe ranch in Fireball, California. And so that is why I think that
12:22Bill's fans... Obviously, you should be charmed by the guy because he's charming. He's captivating.
12:30But I think that he would have been that town's guy in any town.
12:36Well, if you're this good, it's hard to not be your town's guy.
12:40But I do think...
12:41Yeah, could he have blossomed in New York City? Maybe not. Does he blossom in LA? Who knows?
12:47Those temptations. But in Buffalo, maybe it was the perfect seedling.
12:52I really do believe that. I believe that this situation... And none of what you said there,
12:58I disagree with in any way. I do think he is a chameleon in that way. That he's able to
13:03put on
13:04whatever suit he needs to do to put on to excel wherever he is. Your list of accomplishments
13:12there proves that. But I do think that there is a certain
13:18honesty that it feels like comes across when he talks about what this town means to him
13:25specifically. The people here, the attitude...
13:28He's not disingenuous. I don't feel that.
13:30Right. And I'm not saying you do. I just... I think that there is a certain connection there
13:35that would not be the same. Maybe in a town like Pittsburgh or in a town like India.
13:40But he's made... He found his... Whatever he was... His home.
13:45His curiosity, his whatever, that he did find a way to connect, which is a skill.
13:51Absolutely.
13:51And which is something... Because a lot of people don't care to.

13:54You take a look at so many athletes that just don't have that connection.
13:58Mm-hmm.
13:58Superstar athletes. Drew Brees in New Orleans, yes. But when you take a look at... I don't know
14:05if I could just come up with... I'm thinking of what's happening in Cleveland.
14:08Right. The opposite sort of a fact.
14:11Deshaun Watson in Cleveland. But yeah, Deshaun Watson anywhere. He didn't seem like he connected
14:16in Houston either.
14:17Yeah, work out.
14:18I will say, and I'll confess, I've said this before on my podcast, on these airwaves, that
14:25when he first arrived, 2018, I was 47, 48 years old. So I'd been around a little bit.
14:34I'm a cynic. And it took me a little while, but I thought the guy was a phony. I wouldn't
14:41say... I'm not saying I'm blanket. I never accused him of being a phony. But I think I
14:45got that vibe.
14:45That vibe, yeah.
14:46Because he was... I'm like, this is too good to be true.
14:48It's too perfect.
14:49And then over time, that wore away to the point where I'm like, no, he's just really a good
14:55dude. He's really a good guy.
14:58And that's part of what I mean is that it just, it feels so, so obvious and so in your
15:08face
15:09that this guy is meant for here, that over this amount of time, the fact that there hasn't been
15:17something, some side show that has taken over or redirected or made everybody mad at him,
15:26that it makes it to me unavoidable that this is really who he is. And this is really how he
15:31goes
15:31about what he does. And the way he talks about all of everything in this community makes it
15:39matters to him. And I find that to be in a time where I think it can be very easy
15:46for these athletes
15:46to stiff arm that side of this whole world and distance themselves from what really makes the
15:55whole scene work. I think him embracing that is real. And it, it, it comes through the philanthropy.
16:03How about we've gone almost 20 minutes. We haven't even mentioned the philanthropy, which is one of,
16:07he's an economic engine in Western New York and he doesn't even have his own foundation.
16:14Everything is done through, uh, forgive me. I don't know what it's called now. It's Golisano,
16:20but the Oshai in the children's and everything through his, uh, his grandmother's, uh, the outpouring
16:27of, of, uh, affection from the bills fans. Everything's been channeled through that. He
16:30doesn't have his own foundation. A lot of times these players get, they do that. That happened
16:34with JJ Watt. They had a foundation. They, they, they contract out their foundation to somebody who's
16:41so so-called expert expert, and they take such a large percentage of it that the money doesn't get
16:45to the people. And, um, but he's avoided all of that. I don't want to say avoided. Like he's
16:51definitely, I think he's just done it the right way. He hasn't fallen. He hasn't gotten into any of
16:55the pitfalls. You're right. I think there's probably a percentage in the back of, in the back of
17:03Bill's fans minds of going Hollywood. It happened to, it happened to Wayne Gretzky. If can, if it can
17:09happen to maybe the top five athlete of all time or icon of all time, uh, it happens to a
17:16lot of
17:17people. Yeah. Ryan Miller, you know, there's just this, uh, tiger woods. I don't know. It's like,
17:23is he going to lose his edge? Well, five days into the bill season, he has nine touchdowns and has
17:29done

18:37there's a spider there. I don't like that. It was really, it was, it was jarring how quickly
18:42it derailed the entire situation. I really good, good call Adam. That's, that's probably
18:48the, the number one best suggestion that we'll get today, but somebody try and beat it.

20:13he just doesn't, he doesn't feel like that. I think we would, we would have sniffed that
20:17out by now. It feels that that's my point. He's been here a long time. I think you certainly,
20:21I feel this way, especially for a guy my age, I feel very much like I've got the, uh, you
20:26know, the BS detector and it's, it's active about 99% of the time I watch a press conference
20:32for a football player. And I don't know that I've ever really had it about Josh. Maybe when
20:38he said he liked the gray uniforms was the first time I ever heard it. Um, he even did that
20:42in such a way, like he had this expression on his face, like, come on guys. And he
20:46didn't even say he liked him or did he, maybe he did. Maybe we have to go back to the
20:50tape.
20:51I think he said he liked him. Can you give people a break? They worked hard on this.
20:54It was right. It felt almost like he was trying to tell you like, I know, but listen, come
20:59on, I got it. They're, they're fine. And even that, that's like, that's exactly it. That
21:05is, it still feels real because you can almost, it's, you can see right through it. And he
21:11almost wanted you to see right through it. He's the guy who, when you get the ugly sweater
21:16for Christmas that you will know you'll never wear, but while aunt Millie is sitting there
21:21and it's too small and it's garish color, he will try it on for aunt Millie. Yes. And
21:27that's what happened with, I think the gray city uniform. She's like, look, you just gotta,
21:32you just gotta take your medicine. Aunt Millie's heart was in the right place. She went to the
21:36store. She doesn't get out of the house much. And she actually went down to big lots and,
21:40and pulled this off the show. She doesn't have a lot of money, aunt Millie, but this

25:18long road trips. We'd drive down to Disney World one time or go see family in Louisville
25:24and all this other stuff. And we'd always stop at a good breakfast place. And being out with
25:28your family when you didn't travel a lot. And, um, I don't know, that's something for
25:33me walking into a diner and it's coffee. It's not all coffee, but there's like the
25:37waffles and the pancakes and the bacon. Yeah. Oh, come on, man. You're getting me going
