00:00on the western hotline presuming you saw the chiefs last night sal do you think it's a
00:06a sea change in kansas city where maybe a little bit as the bills have done or even more dramatically
00:12they want to be about the running back yes i think that um it's not necessarily just about
00:20the running back i think you know they're in the middle second phase of mahomes career he's coming
00:25off a pretty major injury why put all that on him now um you know if you can run the
00:30ball effectively
00:31you put way less on him it just makes more sense to me so i don't know if it's a
00:34conscious thing like
00:36if he doesn't get hurt do they do this i'm not really sure maybe um he's never had a thousand
00:40yard rusher that would help i just think the circumstances led to them probably shifting a
00:45little bit of philosophy and you know that you know they're in charge of building their roster
00:50but they don't really have that much in the passing game right i mean they're mike you mentioned the
00:57name of a tight end who i saw last night and i was like this who is this i have
01:01to look that back up
01:02who is this guy that's playing for them bidding bottom what what what bidding would um you know
01:06it's it's for she rice and worthy and like i don't know reining stool reining yeah there i
01:13james jesperson they may they may you know everything you said makes sense that mahomes
01:19the injury like let's try to support him they don't have much for him to throw to i don't know
01:26that that'll how much i'm sure they'll have better games than they had yesterday throwing the ball
01:30but holy cow they they were inept passing the ball yesterday yeah he was the only player in the league
01:38to not throw complete a pass over 10 yards did you guys see that the chart i'm not sure if
01:43you saw
01:43that he was the only he was the only quarterback in the league in week one to not complete a
01:48pass
01:48over 10 air yards right oh which is kind of mind-boggling to think about you know what i mean
01:53yeah um everything was underneath they but again i want to say they didn't want him sitting in the
01:57pocket you know i mean like this is a circumstantial type of situation i think for them maybe as the
02:03year
02:04goes on that changes a little bit there was a street free agent right now tackle right i mean
02:09they were yes yeah against the broncos yeah yeah yeah exactly against them right against the broncos
02:14so i mean even sean payton acknowledged that last night he was asked in his post-game press conference
02:20i watched it they said you know did you expect the ball to come out so quickly he's like yeah
02:23i mean
02:24like he's coming off an injury they don't want him sitting back there and doing seven step drops
02:26right and yeah it makes sense totally makes sense so let's see how they evolve but right i mean it
02:32doesn't look like they have like the you know an all pro wide receiver group like like he used to
02:37travis kelsey's getting older you can see that so they're going to lean more on the run game when
02:41they have a quarterback coming off this injury who's transitioning a little bit in his career
02:45was sean payton by the way also asked about whether the broncos were ready to sign drew breeze to play
02:51in the afc championship last year as was reported he was asked he said he didn't know anything about
02:56that's what she didn't know that's i don't get that part shefter said that in the report that it was
03:01like i don't know if i want to say behind his back right but who was breeze talking to walmart
03:06pete carmichael oh wow really it was pete carmichael and is it joe lombardi two assistants i didn't
03:13with denver okay that put that in motion i guess and breeze if you didn't see it breeze apparently was
03:20kind of up for it and then worked out and his arm hurt or his wrist hurt and he felt
03:24like i'm not ready
03:25i can't do it but he would have it seemed i mean how long has he been retired
03:3010 years maybe which went did he just go in the hall of fame five years is it five years
03:36only
03:36breeze did he play probably after he just went in the hall of fame and he would have gone in
03:41right
03:41away so yeah yeah it makes sense still yeah it's a pretty wild story yeah all right yeah he said
03:47he
03:48said i was i was the last person well how would he phrase it and he said i was just
03:52like you guys
03:53like i was the last person you know it mattered or no or something he didn't deny it yeah but
03:57he's
03:57like i didn't know about it he confirmed it essentially no shefter said he thought when
04:01it was brought to him originally that they were his assistants were talking about a scenario from
04:07years ago where they tried to get breeze to come back when they when he was still with the saints
04:12and like what do you mean you just did this like i i don't know i would love to hear
04:16but i'd love to
04:17read the story well sal you how's that we'll get we'll get to the bills and today and and whatever's
04:22going on with the injuries i haven't seen the injury report yet if it's out um it just got it
04:26just as you guys were starting this hour um so we'll get to that in a sec but to feel
04:31a little
04:31this here's how's this for hot takey overreaction after we're now done with the entirety of week one
04:37it might feel a little bit like order has been restored in the afc with baltimore kansas city and
04:42buffalo not only winning but really impressing in different ways each of them you know the chiefs
04:49doing something they've never really done which is lean into a running game and have a almost 180
04:53yard day from their lead running back the bills you know we've seen them have explosive passing
04:59games before but it had been a while and it was against houston so that was impressive and baltimore
05:05just seemingly did whatever they wanted against indianapolis yeah i think some of the teams that
05:12we thought would be pretty good are showing it and then there were a couple surprises along the way i
05:17mean a couple disappointments right the chargers i thought they that was a big surprise to me my
05:21you know my uh survivor pick wound up losing there um you go back to last year though i'm looking
05:28at
05:28the standings week four you want to go last year the year before that i always say i think the
05:32first
05:32four weeks are more of a feeling out process process i think the first four weeks don't really give you
05:36the the the intel you need necessarily on the league after that people start to follow who they are
05:41and last year after four weeks the patriots were two and two and the bills were four and oh and
05:45we all know
05:45that that kind of tide turned a little bit patriots came to buffalo they won the game and that was
05:50a
05:50big change uh in the season and baltimore was one in three last year to start the year in fact
05:55didn't
05:56they they in fact they had a pretty tough go of it for a while if i remember right oh
05:59yeah and then
05:59they want one two three four they were one and five before they either buy and they started winning a
06:05bunch of games so yes i think in one respect there are definitely teams that you kind of expected
06:10there baltimore was impressive to me though i mean for them to do what they did that first week then
06:15again they are fresh derrick henry's older and fresher in week one like he was last year when
06:20they came to buffalo uh they want they blew that game last year they didn't blow this one
06:24jacksonville looked pretty good i want to see kind of what this looks like in week five but yes i
06:29think
06:29a couple of those teams are definitely more like an order restored as you said reverse afc power rankings
06:34today baltimore gets the one then the bills denver rises a dramatic rise all the way up to eight from
06:43one after their performance their struggles last night in kansas city all right what does this injury
06:49report look like sal so let me pull it up excuse me let me pull it up here for the
06:55bills they
06:56did practice i was just there they did practice today on the in the stadium um on the new grass
07:03by the
07:03way they did practice today and before we went out joe brady said tj sanders is sick he won't be
07:11practicing it wasn't injury related with sickness but he everybody else will then when we went out
07:17there cole bishop was standing on the sidelines i'm like oh well this is new like we thought
07:21everybody would be practicing but he is listed as limited so and whatever he did something today just
07:26wasn't doing anything while we were necessarily out there watching um same thing with tarot bernard he was
07:31limited ty johnson was limited i got some video of him you can check that out on my on my
07:36twitter just
07:36kind of people can see him moving a little bit i thought that was important and then a couple guys
07:41who were on the uh injury report yesterday bradley chubb and jordan hancock full participants so
07:46the the one interesting one too was dj moore was out there for stretching and then he went inside
07:51and we're like where'd dj moore go like we don't see him okay well he you know he did get
07:56rolled up on as
07:56we know he wasn't on the injury report yesterday he came back out he was out there i didn't see
08:01him
08:01do much but he was out there with a uh trainer and i remember we leave and they do more
08:05like we only
08:05get to watch certain part of it he's not on the injury report like that just came out and he
08:09is not
08:09on it right so there's no games i wouldn't think there's games being played there you can't do that
08:14so um so you know i guess maybe you know just hope that everything's fine there um how big a
08:22deal
08:22i mean bernard and bishop both left the game and came back so it's not surprising that they're listed
08:29but you know short week we know the deal i mean it's going to be it's going to be hard
08:33for anybody
08:34who's not practicing fully on tuesday to play on thursday i might guess yeah in that sense let me
08:40just clarify something so everybody understands by the way i think this can be confusing so i think
08:44it's important to say this when i say like dj moore left and came back but he's not in the
08:49injury
08:49report and someone goes well that's impossible that means he was limited no it doesn't
08:53what matters is what you do in the team periods right meaning offense against defense offense
08:58running their own plays we don't get to watch that we only get to watch stretching and then
09:03individual position work so a guy could literally miss all of individual position work and we could
09:08be like he's not out here and they could be listed as full because he does all everything during the
09:12team period does that make sense everybody i hope it does but i want to make sure i clarify that
09:15because it can be a little confusing on how all this works with the injury report now that being said
09:19i agree with you however today was a lighter practice because of you know the game on thursday
09:26so even though they're limited i think it's more like anybody who's dealing with anything we might
09:31want to keep them limited because it's a lighter practice and how much do they really need to do
09:34coming off that game two days ago and having a game in two more days i would think that this
09:39is
09:39a good injury report and indicates that everybody should be available except for
09:43maybe tj sanders who now is limited in dmp with a knee and illness sal i'm sure we covered this
09:50yesterday or even sunday you joined us on the post game show too but like the dj more impact on
09:56the
09:56offense long discussed and anticipated and it didn't pop early on sunday in houston it took a while it ends
10:04up being five catches five for 100 the big touchdown down the right sideline the pass interference play
10:09doesn't count in the stats but that's significant was it on par with what you were hoping for or
10:15expecting or maybe what the bills were hoping for or expecting i know the matchup plays into that
10:21it did for me being more pessimistic about more sunday in that particular game
10:27for sure um you guys know going into the game i felt even much as dj more could help the
10:33team maybe
10:33dalton kincaid would have been and the tight ends might have been a little bit more in you know of
10:36a
10:36factor considering how the bills might want to get rid of the ball that wound up happening there
10:40in the matchup you know dalton kincaid and the tight ends but dj more did a great job and he
10:45was
10:45able to get free a couple times and his impact went well beyond the stat sheet he had five catches
10:50for
10:50100 yards but really look what happened on the second touchdown how he set that up with getting deep
10:56and josh throwing it and having the um and having the pass interference and then on the final touchdown
11:01as josh said he saw the safety cheat towards dj more which if you actually watch the play i think
11:07what happened was the safety was actually kind of maybe covering dalton kincaid coming over the
11:11middle a little bit but you know what i mean but dj more was on that side he did move
11:15that way so
11:16whatever you can call it that i also think by the way on that play i think dj more did
11:20a heck of a job
11:21on the chip he did he's the one that gave the chip and then spencer brown kept will anderson at
11:26bay
11:26a little bit easier because dj more so i think his impact was very important i think i mean i
11:31don't
11:32know how much you can plan for trying to draw the eyes of someone i i know plays are designed
11:41in fact
11:41i think we learned that josh palmer on that play call is generally just supposed to be drawing
11:48attention he's not a target right alan said we practice it never does the rep end with me throwing
11:53it to him right but more doing that if bullock if bullock the safety who was deep was focused on
12:02more like alan asserted i think talking after the game the chip block may have bought them another
12:09second because yep he's late coming out right so bullock what's dj more i've been told to see what
12:17dj more is doing i'm over here waiting to see what dj more is doing he's blocking oh no here
12:23he comes
12:23up now it's too late yep right that's right so like just that pause as much as you'd want dj
12:29more
12:29getting into his route quickly it may have i can only say may because i don't know where the
12:34players eyes actually were right i know what alan said like that's that's why you have a number one
12:40receiver that draws attention and even the fact that he was blocking may have bought you the time
12:45that you needed for the window to open for the throw 100 you know we talk a lot about how
12:52great
12:52josh allen is yes he's great he i mean you guys hear pete carmichael talk about him on that throw
12:58he's like you know i mean he's like i didn't my eyes weren't there like but you know josh just
13:03has
13:03a gift and that's right and the one thing that i try to tell people when i go on like
13:08national shows
13:09or people ask me about josh allen and what he's like you know and something we don't might not know
13:13about him or something he's a super smart quarterback yeah like he really is he's a very very high
13:18iq quarterback and i don't think he gets enough credit for that because his talent is so good it
13:22overshadows it but that's something that most quarterbacks might not see and even if they do
13:28they're not making that throw that quickly into that window because he has the arm to be able to do
13:32it but he sees that so quickly you watch the replay it is not like bullock like it's very slight
13:40and
13:40very quick that he moves over it's not like he committed to dj more or going to the half of
13:46the field
13:46he paused that's right just for a moment like his controller broke just for a second and think
13:51about what josh is telling you he's like i've never thrown it there for him to see that that
13:57quickly and then to realize i got d i got joshua palmer bam and throw it i mean that is
14:02the effect
14:03of josh allen's brain as much as it is his arm talent i'm so glad you're making a special because
14:09when i i one of the first clips i saw when we got done with post game on sunday was
14:14allen talking to
14:15evan washburn on the sideline you know describing that play and i just quote tweeted it with i
14:21couldn't love this more and it's not because like i like josh allen's smile or what i i the way
14:27he
14:27described it you know including that it never goes there but it did i love that he was talking about
14:34seeing the safety noticing the safety because i agree with you when you have the athletic prowess that
14:39he is blessed with and has worked and cultivated to have you get sort of you know you don't get
14:47credit for being a technician or a student and that wasn't clearly an example of him being both things
14:54he's got the arrogance because he knows he's got the arm to make that throw so it's an arrogant sort
15:00of throw but he knows he can make the throw because he's enough of a student to know the guy's
15:06not
15:06moving right away and i've got a window that's right i mean it really is it's a special play
15:12all around pre-snap post-snap throw really special and mike to back to your original question about dj
15:20more as well so i'm looking at week one average length of reception so like catching the ball air
15:28yards basically the bills have two guys in the top six i mean they didn't have anybody in the top
15:3320
15:33last year essentially right and it's dalton kincaid 18.4 number two in the league amongst all
15:40qualifiers and then dj more at 15.2 number six in the league i mean that just kind of shows
15:46you right
15:46now the difference in what was happening sunday versus what has happened in this offense this is
15:52really superfluous after everything that's been said about allen and that particular play but if it
15:58hasn't been said exactly going for that shot in houston i mean you're well into the game obviously
16:04you're probably not thinking about his record in houston or anything at that point but he's he's
16:09found years now he's found that balance between the aggressiveness the kinds of things that get him
16:15criticized the kind of blooper reel mistakes that he was more famous for when he was younger and you
16:22know he hasn't completely disregarded that you know shot taking element like you still now he's sort of
16:30in this zone as a player that he's been in for a few years where it's just you know he's
16:35he's going
16:36like there's there's no worries about him taking that shot as well as everything else has been said
16:42um you know at one point a point bulldog made like why did i think of this i was watching
16:49of course
16:50because you always hear this a baseball game and the announcer said a good piece of hitting when you
16:55hear some an announcer say it was a good piece of hitting what is the hit it's a single to
16:59the
16:59opposite field right a good piece of hitting has never been used to describe a home run or a ball
17:05that was like pulled into the gap or something it's always like the technical something you said
17:10you didn't try to do too much with it you just you know took what was there it's a this
17:14is a strike but
17:15it's high and outside and we need i'm just gonna pop it into right field when jose bautista
17:19the bat flip home run i don't believe anybody called that a good piece of hitting
17:25it was a pennant winning three run home right all right detroit sal what are your uh early thoughts
17:31it's not that early i guess still it's thursday night but this of course on paper looks like a
17:36game that could shoot out yeah i mean the over under is what what is it my 53 54 53
17:44and a half yeah
17:45and that means it's gonna be 10 7 at halftime right i mean it's just the way these things go
17:49look at you know last week's game you never know this is a uh a really good offense we know
17:54that
17:55and they have a lot of talent a lot of weapons last week jameer gives what 20 or 34 touches
18:01um i'm on ross st brown sam laporta i mean these can come at you from everywhere golf is more
18:07mobile
18:07and people give them credit for i think sometimes you can get out a little bit you know a little
18:11bit of
18:11boot boot game that they like to run um and then you go to the other side and then there's
18:15aiden
18:15hutchinson and you know he can really get after the quarterback but you know they had 30 points
18:19scored on them against by tyler shuck no offense to tyler shuck i actually think he's you know last
18:24year i i think you and i talking i drafted on one of my fantasy leagues and you're like good
18:28job
18:28getting them um so you know this guy but he threw 56 times by the way 56 times he threw
18:3386 plays
18:34new orleans it's crazy 410 yards three touchdowns i think there are opportunities
18:39against this secondary they're a little bit banged up in the secondary uh coming into the year and
18:44then coming into this game so it does have the makings of what looks like could be a shootout
18:49like the last time these two teams played a couple of years ago when the bills went to detroit and
18:53won
18:53that game where both teams scored in the 40s um but you know i think getting them here at home
18:59after
19:00a win and seeing now aj brown is out and miles garrett is out man if you can take care
19:06of business and
19:06then the chargers didn't look very good they're your week three opponent you get 10 days for them
19:09if you can take care of business it is just so setting up right now for the first part of
19:14this
19:14season right on sale uh real quick before you go i don't know that we might have known this
19:20before you left us yesterday but we didn't get to it and i want to make sure we yes the
19:25fullback
19:26they they they is it a practice squad or active roster yes forget what practice squad practice my
19:31mistake i originally said active roster on my tweet but i changed it practice squad fullback
19:35um and it's interesting the bills did not have a fullback obviously um for the last few weeks
19:40they did saw and i'm going to go back and uh brock um now i gotta get a guy's name
19:47again because
19:47they signed him yesterday um anyway he was at practice today and i don't know if i don't know
19:54if the bills like have any designs of you know elevating him anytime soon i would definitely think
19:58that not tomorrow i mean thursday i say brock lampe by the way brock lampe is his name i was
20:03gonna help
20:03um here's the deal he is a blocking first fullback which most fullbacks are but it's not like a guy
20:09you're gonna handle the ball off to he's has 20 carries in northern illinois all came in his
20:12final two seasons he was there four years he was an undrafted free agent with the patriots all year
20:17last year but on injured reserve i wonder if this is something where they see an opportunity in a few
20:22a week two three weeks a month from now whatever a team that they think maybe a fullback would be
20:28useful to have again so they bring him onto the roster now very good thanks for your time we'll talk
20:33tomorrow you got it there you go that's our sal capaccio on the west her hotline his appearances
20:38are always brought to you by new york's only outlet liquor when you need to stock up it's the place

21:10as as i've
21:11made clear many times yeah all my references go back to when i was in college basically
