00:00with us now is nfl insider ross tucker nfl nfl insider calls are presented by nationwide
00:05for your insurance and financial needs nationwide is on your side hello ross
00:10hey guys how are you we're uh we're really good i mean the bills beat houston as you well know
00:16because you were there uh and so you know everything is everything is good ross we were
00:21very scared is maybe too strong apprehensive reasonably apprehensive about the bills going
00:29in there and doing what they did and they did that and then some i think reasonably apprehensive is a
00:37really good term and how could you not be i mean two years ago josh was nine out of 30
00:45in houston and they lost and then last year he was sacked eight times i had a lot of different
00:52things
00:53i thought might happen in the game the bills scoring 36 points or whatever it was
00:58was not one of them i i did not think that was going to happen you know i it's funny
01:05because
01:05they asked me on i guess it's cbs sports hq they asked me after the game i did interview and
01:12they
01:12said was it are you more impressed with the bills offense or more surprised by the texans defense and
01:19i guess my response was which is the truth i'm a i'm a positive person i'm an optimistic person so
01:25i'm impressed by the bills offense for sure but i was not expecting that from the texans defense and
01:32i was not expecting dj more to get behind them they had to interfere with him that led to a
01:38touchdown
01:38when josh allen ran for the touchdown there was nobody there you know blankenship goes for the pick
01:44and he whiffs that's another big touchdown then joshua palmer of all people totally spins last year
01:52around for another touchdown did they go ahead i mean it was uh there were some uncharacteristic
01:59mistakes i would say yeah from the texans defense and kudos to josh allen and the bills for
02:08obviously uh making them pay ross i want to ask you this partly because you would have been in the
02:13room
02:14for you know interviews with coaches and players in advance of the broadcast do you think more that
02:21when they got the ball downfield to more and kincaid as they did i mean even frequently and
02:26then palmer the place you just mentioned do you think that that was the plan or did they pivot to
02:32that because of something with houston i mean cook had a couple of nice runs early and it seemed like
02:37maybe this was going to be that game we've seen a lot of that game from the bills but it
02:42turned out
02:42that it really wasn't that game at all i wondered how intentional that was yeah i don't know i think
02:48that
02:48once they figured out that with this new protection plan that they could give josh time
02:57and that a lot of times you know it's interesting because the texans dbs are really good
03:03but they're also not used to covering that long you know yeah and you know i mentioned this i think
03:11during the game but you know josh told us saturday that he likes his matchup with dalton kincaid
03:20against anybody and he proved it i mean he threw a jump ball to kincaid against two-time all pro
03:27corner
03:27stingley from his own end zone i love to think stingley is the best cover corner in the nfl and
03:35josh just
03:35threw a ball up and kincaid went up and got it and then lassiter who's really good in his own
03:41right
03:41wasn't able to stay with kincaid i mean if i'm a bills fan my biggest takeaway from the game
03:51is that if we have dj more and kincaid healthy all year good luck i mean good good luck stopping
04:02the
04:02bills because it kind of feels like those are two weapons in the past game that are better than
04:10anything they've had the last couple years i know kincaid's been there but he seems like he's always
04:14been hurt or something i mean he looked awesome awesome in that game yeah you know speaking of
04:21like the impact obviously they both went over 100 yards uh first time oh now i don't remember
04:27in in a long time the bills had two 100 yard receivers in the same game i think i think
04:31it
04:32goes back to digs his first year here maybe early in the 20 season anyway um or no it was
04:37in 23 before
04:38he left anyway um moore's presence i don't know if you caught you know i don't know what you're doing
04:44when the game ends and they throw it down to your sideline guy evan washburn but he talked to josh
04:49after the game about the winning touchdown and how you know in practice that that ball it never the rep
04:56never ends with the ball going to palmer he's just clearing space he's trying to take attention
05:00but what josh said he thought he noticed was that the safety i think it's bullock who was deep on
05:07that
05:07play was frozen maybe watching more who stayed into chip on one of the edge guys and came out late
05:15and that alan noticed that and that's why he knew palmer was gonna he'd have that window there because
05:21the safety was coming late and there's more's impact on a play where he's you know 40 yards from
05:27where the play is made but the fact that he's there has the safety's eyes at least according to alan
05:32and that opened up the window for him to hit palmer it's a great point you know watching the all
05:4022 of it
05:41it was clear that you know bullock i think is supposed to be the middle of the field safety
05:50but he was definitely tilted towards moore's side i'd have to go back and look at it again
05:56to see if kincaid was on that side as well but there's no question you know you can be a
06:04middle
06:04of the field safety but not really be in the middle of the field if you're shading one way
06:11and he was absolutely shading away from palmer right which makes sense i mean lassiter's like
06:18a pro bowl level corner and he's covering the the fourth receiver whatever even we're going to call
06:24palmer man to man and lassiter played it like he did not think he had inside help and he didn't
06:31because bullock shading the other side was not able to get over there in time 23 playoffs 22 season
06:3923 playoffs skylar thompson digs and davis over 100 regular season the game in denver in 2020 where
06:46they might have clinched the division that day the blowout in denver thank you uh ross we've played
06:51around the last couple days with a comment you made and then also from a comment deon dawkins made on
06:57our show yesterday both you know in short talking about how alan dawkins maybe the group see the
07:06change to brady from mcdermott as really stark like different what did what was dawkins word
07:12yesterday uh wasn't dramatic but it was something really you can really feel it you really feel it
07:17yeah that he said yeah dawkins actually it was funny he went into this thing like superhero uh right
07:23the bad guys metaphor guys and the avengers and what side are you on because defense is dark and
07:27mean and bad and like the good guys are the offense right but you you said what what kind of
07:32got the
07:32whole thing started why i even wanted to ask deon about it ross i might have got there anyway but
07:37you
07:37mentioned on the on the telecast that alan said he thought that brady you can tell us exactly what
07:43you said because i've been just sort of you know ballparking it here um that that alan was excited
07:49for brady kind of unencumbered by having someone looking over his shoulder well i definitely didn't
07:55use the word unencumbered no i know you didn't um but um i think what josh had said to us
08:03saturday in
08:04the hotel was just that he thought there'd be there was a little bit of a different mindset
08:09and so like any good interviewer i said well in what way and you know basically it was and and
08:18joe
08:18brady echoed this you know if you're the offensive coordinator and let's just say this like let's
08:25say you're going to call a gadget play if you call like a trick play or a gadget play and
08:31it doesn't
08:31work the head coach might really not be happy about that right like we're winning or we're in this
08:38part of the game you call a stupid trick play like that now they got the momentum blah blah well
08:44if you're the play caller and you're also the head coach the head coach isn't going to get real mad
08:49at
08:50you because you're also the head coach so i just think uh because joe brady doesn't have to answer
09:00to anyone really other than himself that certainly does open up the opportunity to be a little bit
09:07more aggressive with certain play calls and going forward on fourth down or whatever although
09:14mick ferman was already yeah based on the data i get was already like top five in the league but
09:19then
09:19i also think okay was he really top five in the league or is it because every time they have
09:24a fourth
09:25and one he went for it because the quarterback sneaks to the left is so good you know what i
09:28mean like
09:28so some of that can be skewed a little bit but certainly got the sense or the belief that the
09:34bills
09:35might be more aggressive sort of on multiple levels with brady as the head coach with ross tucker
09:41and by the way ross's visits as an nfl insider that he is are brought to you by nationwide nationwide
09:48is so much more than a great insurance company they're one of america's largest financial services
09:51companies too nationwide is on your side you were nice enough to reach out to bulldog and me
09:56and uh you know just maybe looking for feedback on how you sounded i thought we both thought you were
10:03great i thought you sounded very comfortable and you have a a giggle that i'm not sure i've ever
10:10heard something ian eagle said uh made you made you laugh and i like that because you don't often
10:16hear and you should hear more of it laughter on a broadcast because it's supposed to be fun
10:19well he's hilarious and he makes me laugh all the time and i'm i'm glad to hear that you guys
10:27like
10:27my giggle i i'm surprised i've never giggled with you guys you guys make me laugh i feel like
10:32sometimes maybe not maybe not we're probably talking over you you guys laugh maybe i'm the
10:36one making you guys laugh we're too focused i don't know there are different laughs for different
10:39situations i'm probably talking over you that's a great point that's a great my sometimes my wife
10:44will say that was a fake laugh right there i'm like no it wasn't a fake laugh it just was
10:48different
10:48like it wasn't hilarious it was kind of just a chuckle you want me to say yeah you don't want
10:53to be
10:53there it is you don't want to be rude and just not laugh at all sometimes you know just said
10:58you
10:58got to give them something that's right exactly so detroit now you'll be here on uh thursday night
11:05for the westwood one call and you know it's a little bit too obvious maybe maybe you'll tell me
11:10why it shouldn't be but i can easily see both of these teams moving the ball kind of at will
11:16supposed the weather is not going to be an issue probably watching the bills do what they did in
11:21houston makes me very confident for them on offense against a kind of a riddled lions at least
11:27on the secondary they're down and then uh you know maybe the other way too based on what the
11:31bills defense looked like so maybe you'll get a shootout so the interesting thing about that about
11:37the bills defense is first of all the the lions are going to be down at least one line and
11:42it sounds
11:43like and maybe two since it's a short week the left guard and right tackle and i said this on
11:50the
11:50final play of the game i thought the performances by rousseau and dion walker in particular and there
11:59were some flashes from ed oliver also thought that was really really encouraging i mean if you
12:04if you watch the super bowl last couple years you know i've been saying this line all off season but
12:12if you're one of the like 75 million people that only watch the super bowl it's the only game you
12:17watch
12:17you would think pretty clearly the most important position is d line and just send d linemen at the
12:23quarterback and running backs and waves and that's how the seahawks smashed the patriots that's how the
12:28eagles destroyed mahomes and the chiefs you need difference making players on the d line and one of
12:37the i think fair critiques perhaps of brandon bean has been that they don't really have that many
12:45difference making players on defense compared to a team like the texans for example well i don't know
12:52man in this new scheme rousseau looked like i mean he had a nice uh past defense and coverage like
12:58rousseau might be a difference making player dion walker might be a difference making player i still
13:04feel like chubb will make some plays for them i think ed oliver will make some plays for them so
13:10they might have more difference making guys up front or a better d line than i gave them credit
13:17for which i think is a is a big positive coming out of a game where maybe they weren't as
13:22good
13:22defensively as they wanted to be you know i think i think of those guys you mentioned the one that
13:28is
13:28the most exciting i think to a lot of bills fans is walker he's the one we know the least
13:32of he's been
13:33here the least amount of time i mean chubb is new but we know who he is he's been in
13:37the league and
13:37there's a baseline and rousseau sure maybe playing you know stand up outside edge you know today instead
13:44of a four three defensive end will unlock him um certainly made big impactful plays at the beginning
13:51and the end of this game and you know a couple subtle things in between too like you mentioned
13:55the past defense and holding the edge on a couple of run plays but walker is the piece they have
14:01not
14:01had and he showed some flashes last year and the way he moves i mean you kept saying it six
14:08seven three
14:09fifty or whatever he weighs i mean there's a play where i keep seeing the highlights on twitter the
14:16way my algorithm works of him it's a strout is running for the boundary and walker is the bills
14:23player who kind of comes out of the wash amongst the all the linemen and he's running parallel to the
14:30line of scrimmage like stride for stride with stroud i mean it's just like you know stroud's
14:35not full out sprinting or anything but still like walker is cutting that off and i mean that is a
14:42that
14:42is a dude really hauling it to the sideline like there's an athlete in there that i think could really
14:48be a difference maker for them well that's why i called him a planet guy there's just not many guys
14:55on the planet like him that height that weight that explosive i mean the sack he had on the final
15:01drive that was the most important play of that drive because it not only did the texans lose nine
15:09yards but then they had to call their last time out so then they really couldn't utilize the middle
15:15of the field after the incompletion to talent on the sideline uh which you know that's part of the
15:21reason why rousseau was able to get that last sack is because the bills were just sitting in the end
15:25zone knowing that the the texans couldn't really throw the ball in the field of play um walker has
15:33a chance to be super super good now there are also some plays if you go back and look at
15:39it where he's
15:40getting moved in the run game more than he should so um but there's also plays where he splits a
15:48double
15:48team and throws a left tackle out of the way and makes the play so i think you're i think
15:54the
15:54consistency is kind of what you what you're looking for from them but man i would take that game from
15:59walker any day of the week that was incredible i know you have only one minute and we saw that
16:03you
16:04have jacksonville denver is denver in trouble i'm not ready to go there yet i will say their
16:10early season schedule is very very unforgiving and this is not easy i mean short week we all saw what
16:21happened last night and i watched the jaguars game the jaguars picked up right where they left off from
16:28last year the jaguars are legitimately good again and so this will be a this will be a real gut
16:36check
16:36for the broncos short week against a very good and confident jaguar team coming into denver
16:43thank you ross do you need anybody to leave you beer or whatever thursday uh no i'll probably find
16:50some labat blue light some delicious labat blue light i told you i'm gonna walk around and try to
16:56see where they put my statue up yeah um and if i can't find the statue i'll probably just uh
17:02probably
17:02just settle for a labat blue light in fact if i'm being honest i'd rather have a labat blue light
17:07than a statue outside the stadium before the game age-old uh comparison there very good thank you
17:13ross uh good job sunday and we'll look forward to talking to you next week thank you guys so much
