00:00doing sal capaccio with us now on the western hotline is it possible sal i know you have a
00:04family that the the best thing about your life is that you're not covering the cleveland browns
00:08every day is that maybe number one on the list you know people often ask us all of us like
00:14what it's like to cover a team that's you know bad or good and they're i think the positivity
00:19and in my life personally like it's great to cover a really good team right but
00:23when you do this job as you guys know when a team is bad there are more things to cover
00:28there are
00:28more storylines it gets interesting i mean covering different coaches and head coaching searches and
00:34gm searches and quarterbacks yeah i mean you're you're you're wandering through the desert looking
00:38for a quarterback and it sucks or you have all this craziness going on and it sucks but it it
00:44creates
00:45content right i mean when you're in cleveland there's never a shortage of things to talk about
00:48in a way it makes a job like yours more interesting but ultimately does that make it more fulfilling
00:54the difference is like i've told you to put it i've told countless people over the years i think
01:00this job is harder when the bills are good and i i mean that i still i still think that
01:04but it's not
01:05like it's hard it's just harder because like sal said not so much as sitting on the platter it's
01:11obvious to talk about but the difference with the browns is watson and his past yeah because that's
01:17i mean you have a bad quarterback or even a bad quarterback making the most money of all time
01:23yeah sure like when do you move on are we stuck do you just at some point eat the rest
01:29of it at
01:30some point they will that situation could be a disaster without the no it would be right yeah
01:37right sorry you you i should let you know it would be it's just like he's always been so hard
01:41to talk
01:42about you know in in public because you bulldog said a few years when they traded for watson like i'd
01:50have
01:50to quit if the bills did that just to have to to avoid having to talk about him every day
01:55yeah i
01:56don't i look how badly it's gone right he could have been a good player yeah and then you just
02:01sort
02:01of forget about his past and you just live with it but that has not happened you know it's been
02:06it's amazing how badly it's gone even with the baggage it's a fair word i don't know total disarray
02:14sell you know join in cleveland tennessee is tennessee in total disarray
02:21uh no i i think they're probably worse off than they thought yeah but they have a new head coach
02:29they have a quarterback who that people are really kind of trying to figure out and maybe thought they
02:33had something maybe not and then you have a new offensive coordinators i don't know if you
02:37i don't know if you call it complete disarray they're just bad and they're not as good i think as
02:41maybe they thought they could be miami miami has a plan i don't think they're in disarray because
02:48they have a plan i just think that they're they're gonna be playing now after watching today by the
02:53way after seeing what they did did you see that they uh restructured apparently i saw the guy from
02:58um jason from over the cap said he's never seen this before where miami had literally like three or
03:04four guys remaining that even were capable of restructuring any contracts and very minimal at that
03:09and they still did it wow and they literally have zero players left on their roster to restructure
03:14any contracts with they have maxed out the credit card this is the first time in nfl history that
03:18anybody who like kind of looks at this stuff has said a team has literally maxed out everything they
03:22can do to restructure any contracts he's never seen it so that to me tells me it's not just this
03:27year it's next year they're kind of they're doing this and they're going to be bad for two years
03:31what does that mean like if there are good players on waivers or something they're just they have no
03:36opportunity to claim them is it like that they no no they have cap room this year but they're
03:41they basically are maxing out like getting rid of it by the end of next year essentially i think
03:44you know what i mean like they're they're opening up room this year they can do that uh they can
03:48have
03:48you know injury replacements and stuff like that this year but they literally have guys that they
03:53just push like maybe four four hundred thousand dollars in the next year or something like that
03:57where they could open up and and that way that gets rid of it quicker for them you know what
04:00i mean
04:01and and how you do i saw when when cuts happened and like like final rosters were decided upon
04:08there was a tweet i don't think i could dig it up right now but i'm almost sure this is
04:13correct
04:13this is how i remember it they have more money tied up in guys not there they've got more dead
04:19money oh
04:19yeah on their cap than the actual salaries of the players that are playing for them i don't know that
04:25that's ever happened in nfl history but they have it you know it's led by tua tyreek hill bradley
04:31chubbs on that list waddle uh fitz uh jalen ramsey waddle yeah like it's just it's unbelievable
04:38it's a 190 million of dead and maybe they got 180 uh on or 104 whatever the numbers are it's
04:45it's more
04:46than they're paying players to actually play for them well which is incredible i think the term disarray
04:52means like you kind of don't know what's going on what you're doing you have no plan
04:55the dolphins are bad they're gonna be really bad this year i think they they they know what
05:00they're doing i think they're they're purposefully gutting it is what they're doing correct i don't
05:05think the browns are like that i thought the brown i think the browns thought that they might be able
05:08to compete a little bit i think i would say this is disarray but not total disarray how about that
05:14is that where we can we draw that line bulldog because it's always total disarray it doesn't have
05:18to be total just you know mild disarray atlanta mild disarray they don't know what they're doing
05:23down there partial disarray yeah appetizer disarray it's not an entree it's disarray
05:29adjacent how about some clams casino atlanta has quarterback disarray they had no idea what they
05:34want to do a quarterback and that creates organizational disarray right which is
05:37like they have talent on their roster they can't figure out the quarterback situation
05:42how badly these were there and you were sort of just going around the league with you which we
05:47don't always we don't often really do with you um how much do you think pennix damaged himself with
05:55his teammates by being cleared my understanding is he was cleared by doctors cleared for cleared for
06:00contact cleared to practice cleared to play and he went to the coach and said yeah i'm not really
06:07feeling it i never even saw that story i think that's really tough yeah i don't even remember
06:15this i didn't see this wow i i hope i'm not dreaming this because i brought it up repeatedly let's
06:20talk
06:20about it anyway i'm trying no that's okay i'm not saying this wrong i didn't realize that's what
06:26happened here and without knowing the full okay kind of details i would say that you definitely would
06:33damage uh your reputation and confidence in a locker room when something like that happens uh
06:40yeah guys play through a lot and when you're the leader and you're supposed to be the leader of the
06:45team and if that's the case i mean i know guys do respect each other for going hey no don't
06:50go out
06:50there if you're hurt but you know people are saying oh you're cleared you could play you're like yeah i
06:54don't know if i want to and that that really does not look good or rub off very well sleeper
06:59sleeper
06:59nfl september 11th michael pennix jr is cleared and healthy per james palmer tv okay pennix told
07:06head coach kevin stefanski that he's not where he feels he needs to be right now maybe he plays this
07:11week they haven't committed this week you know they haven't that's right cooper rush is hurt too
07:16like he played hurt in pittsburgh back spasms all right to the bills finally yeah so game tomorrow
07:22night injury report out cole bishop questionable i know today was another one of those days where it
07:28was a walkthrough and maybe it was just kind of a an estimation here but um how much does it
07:33matter
07:33if bishop can't go it matters quite a bit he is an important piece of the secondary you had a
07:42secondary
07:42that had communication issues last week you're coming home to a loud environment when you're on
07:47the field on your defense because the crowd's going to be wanting jared golf in that offense to
07:52you know not be able to hear anything and his backup is damar hamlin who as i've always said
07:58he is a backup safety that's what he is he's not really starter level material and if you've got to
08:03put him out there um you know that you know for whatever plays 50 plays versus 10 as a dime
08:09safety
08:09or 15 that's far different um so i don't know what their plan exactly would be right there but you
08:16know
08:16you go against and then obviously on top of that you're going against a really high profile offense
08:20high octane offense i know that they've ran the run the ball really well really well last week
08:24but jared golf can throw the ball i'm on ross saint brown sam laporta i i think it would be
08:28pretty
08:29notable i know i saw some footage from yesterday of ty johnson moving very effectively um i mean
08:38it's a short week you know i know last week i think you might have said to us well you
08:44know it's
08:45might be rushing he got on the field finally on friday before the sunday game it might be a lot
08:51to ask to to go and you also might be tempted with the short week to just save him for
08:55next week
08:55but now we're here and it's a short week and you might be tempted to save him until 10 days
09:00from now
09:01so i wonder what ends up happening with uh with ty johnson probably come just comes down to if they
09:07really feel he can go or not um you know joe brady said last week for what it was worth
09:11they were
09:11going to take it up to game time which they probably knew what they were going to do anyway
09:14it is a short week for the bills it's not a short week for ty johnson he's been out since
09:18august 8th
09:19right so he's he's had time to ramp up here i would look at it this way he's been practicing
09:26for six days now he came back last friday then you take that you take it all the way up
09:32till now and i
09:32know that they have not truly practiced and they had a game in between he didn't play that
09:37but it's been close to a week so i think that's good to get him back going for close to
09:42a week
09:43and if they feel that he's healthy enough to play i wouldn't doubt it i i don't know if it
09:48would be more of if he's healthy enough to play i don't think that they air on let's just wait
09:52another 10 days i think if he's good enough to go now that said i asked joe brady about the
09:58fact
09:58that they they played frank war in some critical situations and you know joe brady's answer which i
10:03appreciate and like and i think this is right he said look you're going to be on the roster you
10:06need
10:06to be ready to play and you know you can't that can't be an excuse that you know you come
10:10up and
10:10you can't play and we've frank gore is a guy they trust and if somebody's out and you got to
10:15play
10:15somebody then you got to play that guy and they have they've had frank gore now in for three years
10:20and considering that frank gore played in those critical situations tells me that you know if
10:26ty johnson's dealing with anything still that they would still go with frank gore if ty johnson's
10:29healthy they'll play him for what it's worth the game two years ago in detroit that crazy 48 42
10:34shootout one by the bills ty johnson five receptions 114 yards in that game no touchdowns they really
10:42took advantage of his of the linebackers there yeah yeah right this game might i mean 90 points
10:48that one but sort of the knee-jerk opinion on this game is shootout we talked about it yesterday
10:55there is a stat that when the spread is as high as this one evan abrams had this action network
11:03and both teams are on short rest the under is nine and oh over like 25 years or something like
11:08it just never it never gets there when it's two teams on short rest um i don't know it's maybe
11:13a
11:13little bit cut what is for me counterintuitive to think that this game could be low scoring i mean
11:2029 25 is under the spread when it's 54 and a half that's not low scoring but you know what
11:27might bring
11:27about sal a game where we're watching two teams not quite click like you know we're sort of expecting
11:34a short week and mistakes uh if you if you go back and watch that lions game and you listen
11:39to
11:40i think justin rogers was the was the interview that jeremy and joe had this morning who covers
11:46the lions and he said they actually had quite a few mistakes that like like drop passes ball that was
11:52you know put on the ground here or there different things that's how i think you get to a game
11:55like
11:56that where you know you get in the red zone and just you don't click you don't have it yet
11:59um you're going against an unfamiliar opponent you haven't seen and you don't play very often so
12:04maybe instead of a touchdown you get a field goal you multiply that by a couple of times that happens
12:09during the game instead of 14 points you're looking at six that's a massive swing right there
12:12um that could definitely help that happen um a turnover here a turnover there so i think that's how
12:18something like that happens and then look you have two teams here with who they probably both
12:22believe they have the best running back in the game right i mean the bills have the leading rusher
12:26in the nfl last year in james cook and then look at jameer gibbs and how good he is and
12:30what he did
12:30last week and if both teams decide hey we're gonna go and run the ball against these guys because we
12:35think we can do that that shortens the game a little bit and you know the clock moves so i
12:39think that
12:39would be the path to having a lower scoring game i think you know also in it you know in
12:44addition to
12:45that element turnovers field goal you know stops on fourth down or third down is if a team like
12:53drives the field and you know eight minute drives that eat up clock and then even if they score a
12:59touchdown when i bet unders that's what i root for is if i get a turnover yes i still want
13:04five or six
13:05plays first and then right but you know long drives and i could see that from detroit although you know
13:11last week was a game the bills didn't get quite the pressure on stroud and it's golf who's thrown
13:18up tons of yards over the i think he could pass john unitas on the all-time list tomorrow if
13:22he has a big night so detroit's capable of that kind of downfield chunk plays as they say and we
13:29saw
13:30last week that the bills are ready for it you know that's even if they have james cook that's kind
13:34of
13:34how they beat houston so if that happens look out because that that kind of game can get you into
13:40the
13:4030s if not higher the bills last week had a 35 yard play they had a i'm sorry this was
13:48the texans
13:48i'm sorry the bills last week had five plays over 30 yards okay the lions last week their longest play
13:58was 22 yards they only had three plays over 20 yards they did not get a lot of chunk plays
14:02last
14:03week they were they gave them up ahead they played from the head all day but yes yeah they have
14:07the
14:07ability you're right but it is interesting when you look at the numbers here i mean the bills they
14:11had a lot of chunk plays last week they had 43 40 38 35 34 lions 22 22 21 that
14:19was it over 20 yards
14:20so they do have the the ability the capability they gave up big plays though lions last week gave
14:25up a 47 yard play a 42 yard play um and the bills did too by the way 43 two
14:30plays each of them
14:31over 40 uh so that that defensively that's where you go here i think it's yes they both have very
14:37good offenses but defensively a we saw the bills give up too much last week especially in the
14:43secondary you're talking about this cole bishop injury now and how about the lions they're banged
14:47up i mean lions are coming in this they have a couple of defensive backs that were placed on uh
14:52pup
14:53that aren't coming back to play in this game and now suddenly um dj reed is questionable in this game
14:59the cornerback they he was limited in practice the last two days after not being listed as anything
15:05on monday and he's questionable to play in this game so they're a little bit banged up and they've
15:08had a ton of that and they are down two starting offensive linemen too that's been made that's
15:12right those players are ruled out starting right tackle and i think a left guard it was two years
15:16mahogany and blake miller sorry great name christian mahogany when the bills were there two years ago
15:22that was the year where detroit was basically everybody was hurt on defense so they've been through it
15:28uh red end zones okay i it makes me think of the 90s when the end zones they just sort
15:36of
15:37became so faded that they almost look pink on that on that turf but i'm sure it'll pop tomorrow
15:44yeah i think so um on the grass in that stadium with the lighting the way it is i i
15:50hope so i mean
15:51i know people they kind of it won the vote right the the red end zones won the vote i
15:56think peak well
15:57he put out a poll on social media and the red end zones won and i would say you know
16:01fans that i
16:01interact with there's definitely a lot that i like the blue ones i think they look pretty sharp i like
16:06the blue too i was surprised i don't really remember seeing them but when he put that poll up that's
16:11what i said i know it's not gonna win but i like the way the the blue looks honestly yeah
16:17but um you
16:18fans i interact with i'd say majority um plurality would would you have chosen red or said they like
16:24red a little bit more so um yeah it should be interesting and then you know we were there
16:29yesterday that had the new grass obviously and you know that's gonna be a storyline a little bit
16:33tomorrow night and how that holds up i think it's more of a storyline over the next three weeks though
16:37to be honest with you right three games not just tomorrow night they have three straight home games
16:41two anthems oh canada for the first time do you guys know the artists i do uh i read isn't
16:48it
16:48bare naked ladies doing the canadian anthem i don't remember the name of the person doing the
16:52ali'i cravalho she was moana okay he's gonna sing star spangled banner tomorrow night i didn't
16:57understand yeah bare naked ladies yep for sure and you know you don't know what moana is i have no
17:02idea what moana is oh i've never seen moana but i do know what moana is how bad is this
17:07point for
17:07me um you have boys they're grown-ups now it's not that bad okay this movie's been on in my
17:15house
17:15many times moana and it's come out since my kids it's the rock oh yeah okay five years ago what
17:22is
17:23moana i i don't feel you could shame me for the rest of my life and i would never feel
17:28bad about it
17:29i'm not doing it i don't feel any shame whatsoever i'm giving you a push advantage push on moana
17:33all right i mean it's a big movie the rock is in moana i love the rock who's the rock
17:40on the anthem point can i say though i it is i really was kind of taken aback by
17:46how many people going all the way back to that boston bruins game when cammy sang and the mic went
17:52out and everybody sang and how many people then and even now like when this was coming out that they
18:00just really had no clue that this has been happening in buffalo since 1970 at hockey games
18:06right and and like why it is and even when you explain like you know i've been doing this since
18:111970 and of course you're just going to get people who want to make it a political issue i understand
18:16and whatever they they can do that it's i just think it's it's dumb to do that it's not it's
18:21just
18:21something we've done here for a long time there's a season ticket base here there's relationships there
18:25people come over the border to watch games hockey football but when this came out last week i mean
18:30really the one i remember was ben volin watching the bruins game and be like what are they doing
18:36there are two american teams here how could this happen i'm like ben like you cover sports you
18:40didn't know this he's like i had no idea you guys did this yeah like yeah i've been doing it
18:43for 56
18:44years basically very rarely gets presented on tv right if you haven't been there then you would never
18:50know and then and then this time it happened and literally like i got i see like joe shad who
18:55covers the dolphins like oh what are they doing they're honoring canada and during before the
19:00game like dude like are we really going to do this again i i hate to even indulge in it
19:05because it's
19:06such a it's such just a performative thing to complain about um i can appreciate someone not
19:13knowing about it sure i mean when the when the sabers are at home they show the anthems every night
19:19but when they're on the road i don't know that maybe they do maybe they do like if i'm a
19:23if i'm a
19:24bruins fan i feel like i should have known that about i would have known that about buffalo but
19:28i don't know how seriously right he is as a fan i mean i i'm sure he's being honest i
19:35love that
19:35it's happening i mean it takes some courage for the bills i mean i'm reading these articles like
19:40rising tensions it's all just dumb i mean it's just so dumb all of it but this is me indulging
19:46in
19:47it right i i and here's my question is i don't know are they gonna air it are they gonna
19:50air
19:50them tomorrow night i wonder yeah that's a good question i don't know that let me text al yeah
19:56will he know i'll know i'm not sure he'll know i'm not sure he'll know well will peter be there
20:01tomorrow night peter will be there right tomorrow night peter you guys do you guys know who peter
20:06is come on not right off peter curb street's dog oh sorry yeah no i'm not i'm not really
20:15interested in kirk i met peter in houston last year before the thursday night game
20:19it's great why wouldn't he be there well there are some places around the league where even though
20:25he's there they're not he doesn't he isn't in the stadium we know this do we know this about our
20:29new place then maybe we don't know no idea what the what about dogs what about dogs i think maybe
20:34dogs are okay if you're broadcasting the game i yeah i possibly probably i would i would think so
20:40there's a new commercial with herb street what's it for gino ariema it's like a series of
20:47coaches talk he's talking to his team and herb street is then talking to his dog and that got
20:53my dog's attention the other day so that you know i'm just sitting there watching it probably on my
20:57phone and then pd peter peter peter shows up and margo leaps off the couch and barks at the tv
21:03immediately so well i think here's why i bring it up last year he had posted that peter wasn't inside
21:12the stadium for their game they did a thursday night game here last year yes and peter wasn't and i
21:16think
21:16there was just honestly i think it was just some miscommunication about who to go through with
21:20security and those kinds of things you know what i mean so hopefully that's corrected and he's on
21:23the field but i don't know you never know it's a new stadium and uh anything can happen it wasn't
21:27a no dog policy because bulldog got in there you go to that game that's that's a good one some
21:32dogs
21:33got it the miami game yeah that's right i was there all right thank you sal we'll talk tomorrow
21:37you got it guys
21:38you got it guys
21:38you got it guys
