00:00Should Giants trade for Jory Porter Jr. with newfound cap space?
00:04That's the headline to our New York Post Sports NFL reporter,
00:08Ryan Dunleavy's recent article as the Giants get ready to prepare for the Rams.
00:13So let's break it all down.
00:15It must be a new day, Ryan, if we're talking trades,
00:19trades going into week two.
00:21But it seems like a good thing when it comes to talking about Jory Porter Jr.
00:25There's a lot of speculation out in the football world that the Giants could use
00:29their additional 5.8 mil and cap savings to trade for JPJ.
00:35You've called around to your sources.
00:38So from what you're hearing, does a trade for Porter make sense?
00:43And again, we're only, what, two weeks into the season?
00:47I would say not now it makes sense, but it's on the radar as something that, like,
00:53he is disgruntled with the Steelers.
00:55They don't seem like they want to pay him the top dollar that he wants.
01:01We've seen how these things go.
01:02He could be a Steeler for life tomorrow, right?
01:05Christian Gonzalez wasn't playing for the Patriots two days before the opener.
01:09He became the highest paid cornerback in the NFL.
01:11So these things turn on a dime.
01:13But Joey Porter isn't playing right now for the Steelers.
01:17They're locked in a contract negotiation.
01:19The Giants are happy with their corners.
01:24But, you know, we know how it goes.
01:26It was second half of that game.
01:28They had both starters on the bench getting checked for injury.
01:31And Adebo was in and Hood was in.
01:34What really sparked the idea in my head, Brandon, was I had heard over the years that it was
01:40splitting hairs between Deontay Banks and Joey Porter Jr.
01:43in the 2003 draft.
01:44The Giants obviously went with Banks on a slight trade-up.
01:47But there was a lot of interest in Porter.
01:49They had very similar grades in the building, talent-wise, on Porter and Banks.
01:53They ended up taking Banks.
01:54The last two years, they looked foolish because Banks wasn't very good and Porter was.
01:59And now Porter's not playing and wants a huge contract.
02:02And Banks is saving his career.
02:03So, it's funny how these things go in circle.
02:06And, you know, maybe in a couple weeks, they'll be teammates.
02:09Well, if I'm going to quote former Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome, he says,
02:13you can never have too many corners.
02:16So, you know, you've got to throw that Baltimore angle in there.
02:19But in your opinion, what would a potential trade package even look like?
02:24Well, it depends on the contract, right?
02:25These things always depend on the contract.
02:27So, like, he's not signed.
02:29So, remember, the Giants got Brian Burns for a second-round pick because they had to give him $142 million
02:35or whatever.
02:36So, obviously, Brian Burns is worth a first-round pick.
02:41When you traded Dexter Lawrence, you got a first-round pick back because he was already under contract.
02:47So, they only gave him basically a one-year extension.
02:50So, you would have to sign Joey Porter to a contract.
02:53So, you're going to give up less in your package.
02:57You're not giving up a first-round pick.
02:58And, quite frankly, I don't know if anybody around the league is going to give Joey Porter the kind of
03:04money he wants.
03:05If Pittsburgh's not willing to do that, I talked to Richard Sherman, the great corner NFL Prime video analyst, about
03:13it.
03:13And he said, like, if Pittsburgh wouldn't do it, why would anybody else do it?
03:16They know him the best.
03:17So, that money might have to come down.
03:18We'll see how it is.
03:19But I'll say this, Brandon.
03:20Have, in John Harbaugh's nine months, have we met anybody in the Steelers-Ravens rivalry that John Harbaugh didn't love?
03:28I mean, he's brought his own Ravens.
03:30He's brought Calvin Austin.
03:32He's brought Najee Harris.
03:34He just sat down for an hour with Mike Tomlin.
03:36You don't think Joey Porter Jr.'s name came up there?
03:39What did you think of him?
03:40What did you think of him?
03:41I see he's available.
03:41So, like, you know, I don't know.
03:44Stranger things have happened than John Harbaugh trying to bring a Steeler to the Giants.
03:50Does he start right away?
03:52Like, what does your secondary look like if you bring in a Joey Porter Jr.?
03:56Who are your starters?
03:57Who are your rotation guys?
03:59Yeah, I mean, he hasn't even practiced, right, because he's got a back injury.
04:05So, you've got to see, you know, any team that gets him.
04:08Even the Steelers, whenever he comes back, whenever he gets healthy, has to have to see what kind of shape
04:15he's in.
04:15In an ideal fantasy football Madden world, yeah, he would jump right in.
04:20What I think is interesting, Brandon, is in my research, the Giants weren't sure back then in 2023 how he
04:29would play in man.
04:31That's kind of why they went Banks with over Porter, is because that coaching staff thought Banks was the better
04:38matchup piece.
04:39Banks was the better press man cover.
04:42Now, Porter's had a really good three-year career.
04:44Has that changed evaluations of him?
04:46I don't know the answer to that.
04:47But that coaching staff didn't love him for man.
04:52Denard Wilson plays a lot of press coverage, and then it drops off into zone coverage.
04:56So, I don't know enough to know if Joey Porter Jr. fits that.
05:00But, yeah, sure, on talent-wise, he'd probably be the Giants' number one corner.
05:04All right.
05:04It's definitely something to keep an eye out on throughout the course of the season.
05:08Ryan Dunleavy, appreciate you hopping on with us, my man.
05:11Thanks, Brandon.
05:12Thanks, Brandon.
