00:00You hear him on the Browns Radio Network, pregame with Andy, postgame with me.
00:04If you happen to tune in to the Big Ten tailgates starting at 10 a.m.
00:08on the Big Ten Network, you'll see him all the time as well.
00:11He's Mr. Tyvus Powell.
00:13Hello, Tyvus.
00:15Gentlemen, how has the whole eyes been?
00:18Hi, Tyvus.
00:18Not quite as angry as folks were yesterday with you and me.
00:23I heard they were mad at you, man.
00:24They were mad at you yesterday.
00:25They were not happy yesterday, man.
00:27Mad at me?
00:28Personally, yeah.
00:29They were coming after you.
00:30They were going for you.
00:31First of all, Andy, I don't think nobody would ever be mad at me because I don't ever give
00:35anybody nothing to be mad about.
00:37I know you're the – he didn't play?
00:39I mean, I'm going to start calling you Disney because you're like the happiest guy on earth.
00:43I think the reason why the foes haven't been all good is because people have time to sit
00:48back, process it, and then, you know what?
00:51I think that coming into the season, everybody had about the same expectation for what the
00:58season was going to be.
00:59A lot of optimism, focusing on the young guys.
01:02And as you've seen things unfold, you really, truly understood why you're focused on the
01:09young guys.
01:10The development of Casey Consemption, Denzel Boston, Mason Graham taking another step,
01:18Carson Swessinger.
01:19I think that's where a lot of people's focus has to be this season.
01:22Can't necessarily focus on the wins or losses because I don't think there will be a ton
01:26of wins.
01:27Which is more likely to be a blip on the radar screen, the defense giving up 34 points or
01:34the offense putting up only 10?
01:37I think that people around here are used to the offense struggling.
01:41So the more shocker is the defense.
01:45I'm hoping that that's not going to be the case of who they are because that's going to
01:50make the season really bad if the defense is, if this is the new defense, you know, it makes
01:55you think that, man, maybe you should have kept Jim Schwartz around.
01:59Maybe you shouldn't have traded Miles here.
02:00I know he's on IR and all those things, but it just looked totally different.
02:04And I think that we, that defense took them for granted, you know, especially Miles, you
02:09know, because now that you don't have that guy and they don't have that guy that teams
02:13have to focus on double and triple teaming, now you depend on everybody else to be able
02:17to win their one-on-ones and we did not do a good job of that yesterday.
02:21It looked really, really bad.
02:24And I know that, and this is the thing, and this is, this is not just a Browns thing.
02:29This is something that's going around the league because the Rams are having this exact
02:32same problem.
02:34People got to understand what you have in the secondary.
02:36You got to understand that your secondary specializes in man-to-man.
02:42Now, I, as a former corner, will tell you, I never wanted to play 70 snaps a man, but
02:48that's just who the Browns are.
02:50And the Rams is doing the same thing.
02:51They went and got McDuffie, who was really good in coverage and playing man, and you asking
02:56them to play zone.
02:57Like, that's not what they do.
02:59So you need to specialize and focus on what, utilize players to their strengths.
03:04I don't think that that's happening with the Cleveland Browns right now on defense.
03:08So, um, what are you doing to quarterback next week?
03:11Are you entertaining ideas to switch quarterback?
03:14I would have been, if it was up to me, this wouldn't, you know, the Deshaun thing would
03:19have never happened.
03:20But I think that at this point, you're probably going to go out there again, give them another
03:25game, and then probably make the decision after that.
03:28I mean, we listened to Todd, and he didn't commit to them.
03:31You know, he's evaluating all 53 players.
03:34And when the coach starts saying that, then it's on the table.
03:36Because usually, if you're with that guy, you're going to come out and say, nope, he's
03:40our guy for sure.
03:41But when they're not in committal, it definitely gives you that idea of, yeah, it's a possibility
03:47they could move on.
03:48I don't think anybody anticipated it.
03:50Well, I'm not going to say anybody.
03:52I don't think that they anticipated it being that bad.
03:55But a lot of people that's on the beat, that's been around watching practice, that's been
04:00around for the preseason, it's not a shocker of the performance of the quarterback position.
04:04Tyvus Powell joining us.
04:06You've been with many NFL teams.
04:08You've seen a lot of different things happen.
04:11Would the players know if Todd Munkin was preaching the truth when he said, give us a better chance
04:18to move the football and score points?
04:20Or would, if they didn't think that, how would that go over in the locker room?
04:25One, they definitely know.
04:27Two, when he said that, we knew that was a lie.
04:30We knew that was not the case, simply for the simple fact that you can just take the
04:34preseason.
04:35Just take the two performances that we've seen from both quarterbacks in the preseason.
04:39If you want to go with that, Shador Sanders moved the ball down the field better and ended
04:43with more points.
04:4410 to 7 was the final count.
04:45So that was a lie when he said it.
04:47And I don't know why he even said that.
04:48But anyways, I think, yes, the players would know the difference.
04:53Obviously, they go against it every day in practice.
04:55They see what's going on.
04:57They see who's being able to put up points.
05:00They see who's the more consistent.
05:01Yeah, it's definitely, it's not something that's hidden in the locker room.
05:06Pretend I'm Miles Harden.
05:07Put your armor on me and tell me what I need to think for the next game because they were
05:10picking on me yesterday.
05:14It's one of those things that you got to grow up right away.
05:16You got to come in there knowing.
05:17I mean, if you didn't know, now you know.
05:19Like, you're the guy.
05:21You're the mismatch that everybody's looking for every week.
05:23And until you make a play, they're going to continue to come after you.
05:26That's the thing about the NFL.
05:27Some of these offensive coordinators is ruthless.
05:30They find that blood in the water and they go at it.
05:32And one or two things is going to happen.
05:34Either you're going to stand up and make a play or they're going to make that coach come
05:36take you out.
05:38That's kind of where they were yesterday.
05:40Very old school football-like.
05:42And Miles Harden has to know it's on tape now.
05:45Everybody knows what you can and cannot do.
05:47So, they're coming right after you.
05:48You best believe Baker is going to put their best player in the slot.
05:52Becca, whoever.
05:54They're going to put them in the slot and they're coming after that guy.
05:56Especially a guy like Baker after the performance he had.
05:59He's looking to run up the score.
06:01And you are the guy.
06:02And with that being said, it's up to the defense coordinator to also know that he is the guy.
06:07So, with that being said, if you're going to play man-to-man, that's fine.
06:10I suggest that you do play man-to-man, but you better make sure one of those safeties
06:15is an inside piece ready to rob and over route.
06:18Because when you're playing in that nickel position, them overs, routes, and them corners,
06:22it's a lot of ground to cover.
06:25And if you ain't fast enough, if you ain't anticipating it, you stand no chance.
06:28So, make sure you have a safety ready to cut them over routes.
06:31Tavis, I want to go back to the defense for a second.
06:34You made your living playing on the defensive side of the ball.
06:37What differences did you see, other than Myles Garrett and Jarrett Verse,
06:42from the defense with Mike Grutenberg as the coordinator instead of Jim Schwartz?
06:46And anything jump out in particular, or was it just a bad performance?
06:52No, I mean, obviously, you didn't have a pass for us.
06:54I think that even when you had Myles Garrett, we were very basic when it came to pass.
07:00We didn't really run out of blitzes.
07:02You know, you was able to get home with four.
07:04You know, and I think with this in the defensive line, I don't think that's the case.
07:07I think you got to get a little more exotic.
07:09And again, I told you in the back end, they played a lot more zone than they have in previous
07:13years.
07:13So, that's the two major differences that I've seen, is that with the personnel you got,
07:18you don't have the best pass rusher in the NFL anymore.
07:22So, just sending four, that's not going to work.
07:25You know, you're going to have to send five.
07:28You're going to have to run some twists and stunts and things like that
07:30to be able to get guys free to get home because just a simple four-man rush is not going
07:34to work.
07:35And again, these guys, it's a reason why you're seeing Joe Woods was here.
07:40A lot of coverage bust.
07:42Even with Jim Schwartz first year, when they ran zone, coverage bust.
07:46It's a reason why Jim Schwartz ran.
07:48The reason why the Browns were the most man-to-man coverage snap team by a wide margin last year
07:56was because of that right there.
07:58They can't, the zone thing, they really just, I don't know, for whatever reason,
08:01it's been three different defensive coordinators that have come in there and tried to run zone.
08:05It just doesn't work for them.
08:07How much of it can we give to Jacksonville for being a really good football team?
08:11I mean, that's, like, I don't think we know week one,
08:14but I do think if Jacksonville's a really, really good football team,
08:17we might go back and look and go, maybe, maybe, maybe.
08:20I mean, I know we didn't look good at all.
08:22We couldn't execute.
08:22We couldn't do that.
08:23But maybe it was because Jacksonville was that good.
08:26I'm trying to be an optimist.
08:28Like, that's the most optimistic thing I can say.
08:30Because, I mean, that oftentimes happens.
08:32You watch that first game of the season and you're like, man,
08:34we were supposed to beat them or we were supposed to be a lot better than that.
08:36And then you see them at the end of the year in the playoffs and you're like,
08:39well, maybe I get it then.
08:41Well, I mean, give Jacksonville a ton of credit.
08:44They are a really good team.
08:46They're a playoff team for sure.
08:47So, it's no surprise there.
08:49It was more of a surprise to see where we were as a team.
08:53And I think we found out that we aren't quite on that level right now.
08:59So, yeah, Trevor Lawrence was absolutely dealing yesterday.
09:02I mean, the dude looked like Tom Brady yesterday.
09:04So, you got that.
09:06And then we knew that they had some weapons on at the receiver position.
09:10I wanted to see how our secondary covered those three wide receivers with Jacoby Myers,
09:16Parker Washington, and Brian Thomas, Jr.
09:18And I think we failed at that test.
09:21The running game, you would think that would be a wash.
09:25You would like our front seven.
09:27I know their offensive line wasn't the best last year.
09:29I think they were ranked 30th in PFF.
09:31They looked pretty good yesterday.
09:33So, I think that maybe they figured some things out over there in Jacksonville.
09:37And that's going to be a team that's absolutely going to be a playoff team.
09:39So, when you look at it like that, it makes it just seem like we got a lot of work
09:44to do
09:44to even make the playoffs.
09:46Tyvis Powell joining us.
09:48Browns Radio Network.
09:50And, of course, a Big Ten network.
09:52The Big Ten tailgate starting at 10 a.m. every morning.
09:55And also, a day job in Columbus where you didn't talk Browns today, Tyvis.
10:01I'm sure you talked something else.
10:03Man, your ears have got to be on fire.
10:04You did not have a good, fun weekend for the teams you covered.
10:07How was this morning after the Buckeyes were up 23-3 and lose a football game to Texas?
10:14It went about how you expected it to go.
10:17First of all, my weekend was saved because my fantasy team won.
10:22Yeah, baby.
10:23So, that's my one positive thing that I at least won my fantasy team.
10:29Hang on, hang on.
10:30I'm checking my notes.
10:31I'm checking my notes.
10:32Nobody cares.
10:32You want to hear Tyvis yell?
10:35Ready?
10:36Zay Flowers.
10:38Woo!
10:41Boy, came through for me yesterday.
10:43No.
10:44In Columbus, obviously, the sky, I think everybody took – they had Saturday night happen.
10:51Everybody was furious about it.
10:53Sunday morning, you still felt a little bit bad about it.
10:56But Monday, you got to the point where you realized, you know what, I'm still upset about it,
11:01but it's so early in the season with a 12-team playoff, you lost to the team that's now number
11:07one.
11:07They moved you down to six.
11:09Everything that you still want is right there.
11:11I just think that for this team, the more surprising thing was the defense to me.
11:16I thought Steve Sarkeesian caught an unbelievable game against Matt Patricia.
11:22Even the drop touchdown and the interception, to me, like, Texas Steel was still dialing it up on offense,
11:29and we really didn't have an answer for it.
11:31So, I'm interested to see what the defense look like.
11:33Obviously, they're going to get their confidence back this weekend against Kent State.
11:36Sorry, Jeff.
11:37What?
11:38Thanks, buddy.
11:39Oh, man.
11:39That's double trouble.
11:40I can't say a big win Saturday.
11:42Be it Wolford or something like that?
11:43Yeah, like I said, they're going to get their confidence back this Saturday.
11:47No, no.
11:47Let's be honest.
11:49Dan, tell him, what are they going to get?
11:52What are they getting?
11:54They're getting a big old check.
11:57They are getting, say it your way.
11:59That's right.
11:59Say it your way.
12:00They're getting paid.
12:02They're getting paid.
12:04Anyways.
12:05The Flash is going to channel their inter-Western Michigan Bronco.
12:08Stop it.
12:09Not worried.
12:10If that happens, then it's going to be a fire and day crowd that's going to flood the streets
12:18of Columbus if that happens.
12:20So, no, I think that they'll be fine.
12:23Again, it's a long season to go.
12:25To me, you'll find out what this team is made of when they get to the middle of the season,
12:30when they got those three games against Indiana, Oregon, and USC.
12:34They got to find a way to make it out of those three games unscathed and then obviously get
12:39to the last game of the season.
12:40So, it was a good test.
12:42This team needed a nice wake-up call.
12:44A lot of young guys that got to grow up right before our very eyes, and they got to do
12:47it
12:47fast.
12:48It was a good college football game.
12:50Let me ask you this one.
12:52The fourth quarter is not ideal.
12:54No, that's the first time he's ever given up a 20-point lead, Ryan Day has, just for
12:58a matter of fact.
13:00As a gentleman who studied NFL quarterbacks, getting ready to earn a paycheck playing DB
13:08in the NFL, you had a guy named Arch Manning who led three long scoring drives in the fourth
13:14quarter, and a lot of folks are saying, okay, there's the breakout game he needed.
13:18What do you think about him as an NFL prospect?
13:23I think he'll be fine.
13:24He throws a nice ball, pretty accurate, got all the intangibles that you want, kind of
13:30worry a little bit about his progression and reading the field under duress and things
13:34like that, but obviously he's got the running ability that makes up for that.
13:38So, I think he'll be a really good prospect.
13:39Obviously, he'll be one of the guys that they'll talk about as the number one pick.
13:43I know a lot of Browns fans are on the March for Arch train, so if he ends up here,
13:49I guess
13:49that'd be fine.
13:51I just got a little bit of a problem with the franchise quarterback's name being Archibald,
13:57but that's another story for another day.
14:00I don't know how to add.
14:01No, he's a really good player.
14:02I wouldn't be mad if he ended up with the Browns.
14:06Tyvus, I want you to double down on something that I read after the game on Saturday night.
14:12It said, this was one of the worst losses in Ohio State history.
14:16And I don't react on social media, but I wanted to say, were you born yesterday?
14:23They've had much worse, more painful losses than that loss on Saturday night.
14:28But at the end of the day, it was a good college football game.
14:30It was early in the season.
14:32If you're going to lose, lose there, and you're going to lose to a team that's going to be number
14:35one in the country.
14:36I mean, you lost to the number four team in the country.
14:39This wasn't like, you know, like, I don't know, like, losing, getting blown out against
14:46Clemson in 16, right?
14:47Like, that hurt.
14:49Those are bad losses.
14:52I think the better question was, in the Ryan Day era, is this one of his worst losses?
14:59His worst loss, by far, is the team of North lost in 24.
15:03Yes.
15:04But to say that was probably one of, and it was from somebody who has some street cred,
15:11and I was just like, what are you talking about?
15:14You must have been born last week if you think this is one of the worst Ohio State losses
15:18in history.
15:19They lost to the number four team in the country.
15:21Yeah.
15:22A lot of people look at it like that, Andy, because they say it's definitely a top five
15:26loss in his career.
15:27They point to the team of North.
15:29In his career.
15:30All right.
15:31They point to the Georgia loss, the Clemson in 19 loss.
15:36That Oberlin loss in 19-21, that still stings?
15:42It was one of the things that never should have happened.
15:45You have 20 points in the fourth quarter.
15:48It shouldn't happen.
15:49It did.
15:50They got to learn from it.
15:52Find a way to make it better.
15:53The good news is everything that they wanted from the beginning of the season is still on
15:58the table.
15:59So, can they bounce back like they did in 24 when they went on this historic run and
16:04then won a Natty?
16:04That's what you're hoping that you get from this.
16:07Yeah.
16:07Thanks for being with us, sir.
16:09We appreciate it.
16:09It's been a long, what, 24 hours for you.
16:13Thank you, Tyvus.
16:15Yeah, something like that.
16:16Go Bucs.
16:18Go Browns.
16:19Go Guards.
16:20Win the division.
16:21We're talking.
16:22Thanks, Tyvus.
16:23Bye, Tyvus.
16:24See you.
16:24Tyvus Powell, Browns Radio Network.
16:26We'll be talking.
16:26Bye.
16:26You
