00:00breaking news here uh a statement from dylan larkin who requested a trade
00:06he says over the past couple of weeks red wings leadership and i have had several in-depth
00:10discussions i've approached those candid conversations and i will be at training
00:15camp i've appreciated sorry those candid conversations and i will be at training
00:18camp with my teammates with new leader when new leadership is in place we'll talk further about
00:23the direction of the team we will keep those conversations private and i will keep my focus
00:27on the season ahead and the guys in the room the red wings and i don't know who for the
00:31red wings
00:32but there is it's a statement from the red wings a general statement from the red wings first on
00:38dylan larkin reporting to camp just so people understand this is tweeted out from the detroit
00:42red wing yes it is it is from them ourselves yeah um we look forward to seeing dylan and the
00:47rest of
00:47his teammates at little ceasers arena for the start of training campus we prepare for the upcoming
00:51season on dylan larkin's trade request dylan is under contract as a member of the detroit red wings
00:56any conversations regarding his future with the club will take place privately when a new hockey
01:01operations leader has been named as such we will not comment any further on this matter
01:06and on the captaincy of the red wings the red wings will begin the 26 27 season without a captain
01:13being named any further discussions or decisions regarding this topic will be made once new a new hockey
01:20operations leadership is in place all right so there's a lot to unpack here first of all
01:29i think the statement is the the dylan larkin statement is uh interesting from the first sentence
01:34over the past couple weeks red wings leadership and i have had several in-depth conversations which
01:39begs the question who's the leadership of the red wings right because i don't know who it is
01:44does that mean chris illich i mean what does this mean um but i appreciate that he's released a
01:51statement i'm surprised it doesn't say anything there about the fans it's just it's just straightforward
01:55about the team uh and then you have the red wings side of it and it reads like it's straight
02:01out of ai
02:02um which is fine because everything needs to be just there is no leadership in place right now
02:07so there's no reason to add anything where you can speculate on it's just cut and dry okay we got
02:14to
02:15address training camps next week yes all the players are coming we look forward to everybody
02:19fair enough okay the trade request well we keep that private we're not going to talk about ongoing
02:22negotiations fair enough that's easy enough and the captaincy part is the interesting one
02:27because that's that's something that i don't think that they needed to make a statement on and i'm glad
02:33that they did but it's curious that they did and what was said which is that they're not going to
02:38have a captain being named right now further discussions or decisions regarding this topic will be
02:44made once new hockey operations leadership is in place i find it really interesting because
02:51i have a hard time thinking at this point that tom mcclellan is not going to be the head coach
02:57right given that they're practicing starting next week in training camp although things happen all the
03:02time in the nhl but if you're a gm coming to this team you would think that you have your
03:09you get the approval on who is the head coach of this team it's part of the gig but i
03:13mean do you
03:14come in and and come in hot make changes right away or do you say all right i'm mcclellan's an
03:19experienced nhl coach we're going to leave him in place here and we'll let them flush out who's going
03:24to be the the captain i think all that is is probably true so it's it's curious and yet at
03:29the same
03:29time i think that it's smart that they have said that they don't have a captain now because they
03:35need to get they kind of feel this out and what this how does the team feel about this how
03:40the
03:40players feel about this we want to bring good statement was a couple days ago which seemed
03:44favorable for dylan larkin but i don't know if everybody on the red wings feels that way so they
03:49need to figure this out at training camp okay how is he being received by his teammates does he have
03:54to make a speech to his teammates and talk about asking for the trade and all that and there's a
04:00lot to clear up from him and the team but at least it seems like they're in a good place
04:05to get that
04:06started and i appreciate that this is i wish this happened weeks ago or months ago but it didn't you
04:12know i wish this happened right amongst the things that we wish happened weeks and months ago this is
04:16on the list as well yeah i mean like wish that everything had happened months ago but uh it didn't
04:22it's
04:23it's a weird timeline with what's going on with one of the most storied franchises in all of
04:28professional sports that now they're as a franchise they're not acting like one of these franchises
04:34it's just strange but okay here it is a less than a week before training camp and now they've
04:40released statements from dylan larkin and about dylan larkin so when's the leadership going to be named so
04:48i suspect he's going to be fine in the room i think i think de brinkett's comments are going to
04:55be
04:55reflective of how most players feel and i could be wrong on this don't you know but i think he's
05:02going to be fine in the room i think his bigger issue is the fans now that really shouldn't impact
05:08his job it might make it uncomfortable if there are boos for dylan larkin um i'm not i'm not a
05:16guy
05:16who typically boos so i you know it is a business he was making a business decision and if you
05:25think
05:25about the state of the red wings it it's not like stunning that a player wanted out given the direction
05:34of the organization um the fact that it got out is probably suboptimal um you know we i don't remember
05:43there being any any there's been no comments from dylan larkin publicly since this trade request right
05:51so and quite frankly i know we don't know how this got out right there's speculation but it's not like
05:59dylan larkin came out and announced he wanted a trade it got reported that he had requested a trade
06:03and then eisman finally had to address that by saying yes his agent requested a trade and that
06:10was it he wasn't taking any more questions on that and that was the only thing that's ever been said
06:15and that was months ago that was what right before for the uh draft yep so here we go with
06:20this
06:21breaking news dylan larkin it says he's looking forward to training camp and he'll talk to new
06:25leadership when it gets in place and the red wings have i guess officially stripped them of his
06:30captaincy and but they're leaving the door open it's pretty clear that they're leaving the door open
06:38to see how this goes because they're not naming a new captain i mean you could see it going in
06:46a
06:46bunch of different directions i could see the team totally getting behind dylan larkin hey you stood up
06:50to eisman and and we appreciate that and yeah which is a weird thing to say right well right i
06:55it's and
06:55i don't like saying it because i'm a huge steve eisman fan not as much as him as a gm
06:59but it's not
07:00going to trump my feelings for him as a player and what he meant to this organization what he still
07:04means to this organization but i could see players getting behind him from that standpoint uh from what
07:10he said a couple years ago the trade deadline and then putting his money where his mouth is and saying
07:14all right fine i want out and does that force all this to happen it seems like it forced all
07:19this
07:19to happen at least that's one conclusion you could draw um but it's it's the right thing i mean we're
07:27a week away from training camp he had to say something like what what's going to happen it's
07:32going to be really awkward he can still win over fans with what he would say in front of cameras
07:36and
07:37microphones is he going to get some boos to start the season you betcha he will but you know after
07:43that first game if he's booed that first game which he probably will be he'll have a chance to do
07:48that
07:48and say i totally understand where the fans are coming from uh really unfortunate how things unfolded
07:54and i'm going to do my best to uh you know to to do what's right for this hockey team
07:58and and
07:59hopefully the fans will get back on board meantime i hope that they will cheer us on as a team
08:04but me
08:05as an individual obviously we've got some work to do to amend some fences there but they've got other
08:09things could happen too now because if this if this indicates to you and because here's what it
08:14says to me larkin's on this team they're not trading i don't think that's happening i don't think i don't
08:19think they got real trade offers for him that were going to be anything there is now it's a growing
08:25percentage in me it began at like two percent maybe five percent now it might be up to like 15
08:30percent i really think the red wings are going to make a trade to bring somebody here for dylan
08:36larkin or not necessarily for him but somebody that like a quinn hughes type that has not signed
08:42an extension with my with minnesota and they're getting concerned about that up there and now
08:48detroit's going to call minnesota and say oh no it's not about sending dylan larkin to you how about
08:52sending quinn hughes to us and let's talk about that because you're going to lose that guy because
08:56you're not going to pay him and maybe new leadership is going to say we got to pay somebody or
09:00do they go
09:01and call columbus about zach wierenski who's reportedly larkin's best friend and say hey
09:06we know he hasn't agreed to any extension how about we talk about a deal that benefits both teams
09:13i think that's a real possibility they can get somebody else here well um it's going to be
09:19interesting and as i take a look at this that you know moving forward i tend to agree with you
09:26i
09:26don't think dylan larkin's getting traded that unless he widens the list of teams that he would
09:32accept the trade to because he essentially came up with three teams that the red wings
09:38couldn't make a realistic deal with but hey at the end of the day this is the breaking news today
09:43it's still a friday and it's still a football friday we interrupted our scheduled football friday
09:48to bring you this breaking news dylan larkin releases a statement um he's planning on starting
09:53training camp with the wings we'll talk to leadership when it gets put in place red wings say
09:57they'll start the season with no captain see how this thing plays itself out uh who knows how long
10:02that will last uh all right so coordinator spoke yesterday drew petzing what do you expect from
10:07your offense kelvin shepherd what is going to be different in year two under your leadership with
10:12the defense hear what those guys had to say next here on karshen anderson on 97.1
