00:00Well, good morning and welcome to the Karsh and Anderson program. I'm Doug Karsh. That's Scott Anderson. Hello, Scott. Hello,
00:05Doug. How are you, sir? I'm all right. It's good. I know what you did last night and I can't
00:13wait to hear all about it because it was interesting watching on TV and trying to get a sense for
00:20how the fans were reacting to our guy 71.
00:27And I'm just wondering if this is going to happen every game because every game has a different crowd and
00:32a different audience. You know, there's going to be changes. People are going to be seeing games for the first
00:38time. And every time the first time you see Dylan Larkin, do you boo?
00:44Maybe. Yeah. Um, until he comes out and says something that makes you say, well, I don't want to boo
00:51that guy anymore. I mean, he's doing it with his actions and a goal and assist last night and stood
00:57up for his teammate, which tipped off, uh, you know, uh, a couple of incidents.
01:01Yeah, the Gordie Howe hat trick. Well, he didn't fight, but I mean, he didn't drop the gloves. Um, for
01:06him, he did his version. No, no. Even he, he knows better than he's like, I don't know if it
01:11was much of a fight. Um,
01:13but what was fun with that, with that fight at the end of the second period, Emmett Finney turned on,
01:21I forget who the player was. He turned to, and they, they just, they were squared off. Emmett Finney beat
01:26the hell out of that guy.
01:27And he didn't get a single minute in penalties. I'm like, where, where's Emmett Finney's penalty? Well, how, how does
01:33he not get a fighting major? He dropped gloves, knocked the guy down and then took the guy down. How,
01:40huh?
01:40Huh? You know why? You know why? No. Cause fair enough. Ben Sherratt taking care of business. Oh my God.
01:49That he just haul off and beat the hell out of his guy. And to bring it with a serious
01:54cross check. Uh, after he got hit, he wasn't happy about that. And the cool thing was the camera angle
01:59that they, you guys saw it on TV. I did ankle cam. It was, that was awesome. That ankle cam
02:05was pretty awesome. Um, but the, the whole thing last night was, um, was saying to the guys in
02:10morning show, it was a little weird, it was a little weird, right? He gets booed every time he touches
02:15the puck. And I, you know, I understand why he gets booed right up until, um, yeah, until you, you're
02:23contributing to a win. I mean, you score the goal, um, fans cheered. There were some booze you could hear,
02:30um, assists on another goal again, starting to get more cheers than booze.
02:36But then like there were periods in the game where it was quiet enough. And he, he touches the puck
02:42and people are booing again, or they're on the power play and they're booing the power play. What are you
02:47doing? I get it. You're upset with him because he asked for a trade and I'm upset with him because
02:52he asked for a trade, but I would think that like to myself, if I, if I started to play,
02:58if I'm going to boo in the beginning of the game, I'm not going to boo once the game gets
03:00going because I want to see the flow of game and I want my team to win.
03:03Otherwise, why am I in my seat? You want to win despite the guy? I got it. But you know,
03:10it's quite important that you, you capitalize on the power play or that you don't give up a goal on
03:15the penalty kill.
03:17So it was weird. And by the end of it, you know, he's announces the first star and again, Birchie
03:23called the Birchie called. I think, uh, I thought he said he was going to have two goals in the
03:26game.
03:26Um, but he did say he was going to be the number one star and he was the number one
03:29star and the fans cheered him, cheered him, uh, loudly and went into the room afterwards.
03:34And there was a larger than the normal media throng there for this game and, uh, cameras and microphones in
03:41the locker room.
03:42And Dylan came out and, and he spoke, I give him credit, man. He spoke for like 10, 15 minutes
03:48in front of all that, uh, before they finally said, all right, last question.
03:51Um, and he answered them all may not have answered it to, to everybody's satisfaction. I think there were times
03:57he wanted to go down a different road and then he would stop himself and say, look, it's just great
04:01to play hockey again and be back with the guys.
04:04And, and I get it. Cause I think he's torn a little bit too. Cause once you're in the setting
04:09of, okay, I'm practicing with my teammates.
04:12It wasn't about these guys and they should know it. And hopefully they do know it. And it sounds like
04:17these guys know this is a business thing and he's pissed at management, whatever.
04:21Um, but now that he's actually played a game with these guys and you know, he's, he's thrown punches with
04:28these guys. He's defended these guys.
04:30They all, they're all, they are, they're an actual team. And Tom McClellan's talking about it afterwards. Hey, he just
04:36wants to get back to playing hockey. He's a hockey player. It's what he does.
04:39It's clear. Todd McClellan wants him here. Here's what else is clear by the announcement of him being number one
04:45star.
04:46It's clear. It's clear. The red wings organization wants him to stay. They don't want to trade him now, whether
04:51that's because they know that they can't make a trade to one of the teams he's asking for.
04:55That's going to benefit the red wings. Or hopefully it's just because you recognize this guy's a really good player
05:01in this league and he needs to be a red wing.
05:03He's a bargain for the next five years and he's a real difference maker. If there's any way that this
05:11can be smoothed over or reconciled.
05:14I don't know if there is. I didn't get the sense last night that he's like, that he's actually that
05:18torn yet.
05:20I think this might happen after a few more games. If he's being successful and the team is winning games
05:25that he might feel a little bit more torn, but it didn't seem like it last night.
05:29It's it's really it's it's still a messy situation and it's really unfortunate because that guy clearly makes this team
05:36better.
05:37So our question for fans today is what do you want to happen here?
05:41How do you want this to play out?
05:43Do you want him to reconsider?
05:46Do you want him to say, hey, my bad, because the moment you ask for a trade, you immediately the
05:50instinct is vilified.
05:51I mean, that's that's what happens. Fans is that a player.
05:54One of your better players ask for a trade. People don't like it.
05:57And I understand why.
06:00But we're in a weird place where right now people aren't happy with the organization.
06:04Like most I feel like most fans aren't happy with the direction of the organization.
06:08Do you think that's a safe assumption?
06:09Oh, I think that's a real safe assumption.
06:12Dylan Larkin is one of you.
06:15Dylan Larkin isn't either.
06:18He's he's in the same boat.
06:21Now, with that said, you know, what what do you want to have happen?
06:26How do you hope this thing plays itself out, fans?
06:29Do you do you want Dylan Larkin for everything to be all good?
06:33Because I made the analogy yesterday.
06:37It's like a couple where one side is asked for the divorce.
06:44But they're still living in the same house.
06:48And last night, you know what the hockey game was?
06:50The hockey game was on one night.
06:53The hockey game felt good.
06:55That's you had a couple of drinks.
06:57You guys talked.
06:58You had a good conversation.
06:58But you wake up the next day and you're still looking for a divorce.
07:03Right.
07:04You're still waking up on the couch.
07:05Yeah.
07:06But last night felt.
07:08It felt good in the moment.
07:11But I just I mean, I'm fascinated by how fans want this to play itself out.
07:17And I think the fans themselves felt the paradox last night.
07:20Boo boo.
07:21Then he scores.
07:22Hey, then he gets into whatever you want to call it.
07:26The scrap.
07:26Let's call it a scrap.
07:27He gets a scrap.
07:28He has an assist on another goal.
07:30Yeah, for sure.
07:30And so, you know, I, I, I think in one hockey game, he won over most of the people who
07:38were
07:38there and then listening to the morning show and talking to them, I said, what, you know,
07:42during a commercial break, I said, what percentage of calls do you think said, you know what?
07:47We're all good now.
07:50And I'm like, because it's only one hockey game.
07:52And you know what people said?
07:54You know what Costa said?
07:56The vast majority said we're all good now.
08:00Now, this is a 30 goal scorer who makes eight and a half million dollars a year for the
08:03next five years.
08:04This is a bargain by NHL standards.
08:07He's still got gas in the tank.
08:11And, and yet, you know, I, I understand the vilification of a player that wants out.
08:17It's just, it is what it is.
08:19So two, four, eight, five, three, nine, 97, 97.
08:22What do you want to have happen here?
08:24And, and I think Gator, this is one of those times where, because we do what we do and
08:31you get into it because you're a sports fan and you have many of the same emotions that
08:36people out there listening are, but the longer you do this, the longer that part of you is
08:42quieted, it's, it's muted.
08:46And, and so I'm really intrigued with what the fans want in this situation.
08:54Two, four, eight, five, three, nine, 97, 97.
08:57Let's talk to the people.
08:58We go to Dave.
08:59You're on 97 one.
08:59Hi, Dave.
09:00Hey, good morning, gentlemen.
09:02What's up?
09:03I'll tell you what.
09:04I think it's a, first of all, a bit loony to pay to go to a game at this point,
09:08but God
09:09bless you if that's what you're into.
09:10But even worse is to boo the best player on the ice and the only one who had the stones
09:16to stand up and say that this organization is absurd.
09:20And if Dylan hadn't done what he did, then we would still have the lack of Iser plan running
09:26our organization into absolute abyss.
09:30I don't know if that second part's true.
09:36I mean, if you take Chris Illich at his word, he was ready to make a move.
09:40I don't know if I want to take Chris Illich at his word, but I mean, the fact is that
09:44they did move on from Iserman and they have their reasons why they did, and they stated
09:48them kind of publicly.
09:50As far as the fans booing, the way I view that is fans are pissed that he doesn't want to
09:57try to work it out.
09:58Like, be part of the solution.
10:00Okay, got it.
10:01Front office sucks.
10:02It's a mess.
10:03Nobody's happy with what's happened here, right?
10:06Nobody's happy with how Iserman has run this team over the last few years.
10:08Nobody's happy that the reports are out there that Chris Illich may have gotten meddlesome
10:12and nixed a couple of moves that Iserman could have made.
10:16Maybe Stevie was neutered with what he wanted to do.
10:18Who knows?
10:19People aren't happy with that, and I get all that, right?
10:22But you want your players to be part of the solution.
10:26You don't want your players to be fleeing the scene and demanding the trade.
10:32So that's why I understand why the fans are going to boo.
10:35I don't understand how, if you're a fan that's booing, how you can keep doing it throughout
10:40the course of the game.
10:41You want your voice heard, it's heard.
10:42Yeah, I understand why they're booing, and like we always say, fans can do whatever they
10:46want.
10:47Your point is it can be counterproductive to what your end goal is.
10:51Hey, coming up today, we got the college football blitz thingy.
10:53We've got another edition.
10:56Are you going to eat that?
10:57We got a new game.
10:58We got 10 texts.
10:59We got all kinds of stuff.
11:00So lock in.
11:01It's Carson Anderson here on 97.1.
