There are conflicting reports on Larkin's relationship with the Red Wings.
Transcript
00:00All right, Carson Anderson here on 97.1 Pistons and Red Wings stuff here.
00:05Look, Elaine St. James tweeted out yesterday,
00:09a person with knowledge of the situation told the free press
00:11that Dylan Larkin's list includes the Panthers, the Wild, the Golden Knights,
00:14the Stars, the Capitals, the Hurricanes, the Mammoth,
00:17the Lightning, the Devils, and Avalanche.
00:19That's 10 teams.
00:21Bouchergras said last week he expects something to go down
00:26in the next 7 to 10 days, so we're right in that window.
00:28You heard the Jimmy DeVilano soundbite that we've kissed and made up.
00:34I don't know that he's officially speaking for anyone,
00:38but as it stands right now, it's funny because Jim Costa this morning
00:46was talking about what Utah has and that their system is loaded
00:54and they've got good young players,
00:57but are they really motivated to go get Dylan Larkin?
01:03I just keep going back to Scott.
01:05I'm not sure that there is a team that will match what I would set the asking price
01:13as for Dylan Larkin
01:16because the contract is just too team-friendly.
01:18And this weird situation, this very weird situation,
01:25I guess I'm not sure I see a reasonable solution
01:29because I don't know that anybody's going to pay this price
01:32of what is a reasonable ask,
01:35which is borderline not reasonable,
01:38which would take...
01:39I just can't see the Red Wings saying,
01:40yeah, we're better off with these prospects
01:42than we are with Dylan Larkin at the price we have to pay.
01:46So I'm looking at cap space the teams have right now,
01:51and most of those teams on his list just don't have it.
01:56Even if you're going to pro-rate the contract or pro-rate for this season,
02:00let's say you're throwing it out,
02:02now it's like $7 million left that you have to pay Dylan Larkin.
02:05So you look at teams that have $7 million in cap space,
02:09the only team that fits in there for him is Carolina.
02:16Carolina's one of the best teams in the NHL.
02:18I don't know if Carolina is looking to move anybody from their roster
02:23to bring on Dylan Larkin.
02:26And once you get past that,
02:28then the next closest team is Utah
02:29with $4.43 million in cap space right now.
02:33So I don't know how this gets done.
02:36Utah has always been brought up as an interesting team.
02:39Like if Larkin were ever to consider it
02:41because they have so many prospects,
02:43they've got draft capital,
02:44and they might have a player or two off their roster
02:46that they could part with.
02:48But what Costa was talking about,
02:50Logan Cooley, who's 22 years old
02:52and playing right now for the Mammoth,
02:55T. Jiginla, Jerome's kid, who's their top prospect,
02:59and Caleb DeNoyer,
03:02who is another top prospect
03:04that they have in their system.
03:05And I mean, I'd be asking...
03:07DeSnoers?
03:08Yeah.
03:10Yeah.
03:11Yeah, it's spelled D-E-S-N-O-Y-E-R-S.
03:16DeSnoiers.
03:16But yeah, I think it's DeJuan A.
03:18But anyway, the point is,
03:21that ask would make me say,
03:24okay, if you're going to give me a Gindler
03:25or DeJuan A.
03:27And a Cooley.
03:29And a current player?
03:29Yeah.
03:30Okay.
03:31Yeah, it seems like Utah's got a package
03:33that could work out,
03:34and yet they'd still have to figure out something.
03:36I don't know what Cooley makes,
03:37but they have to figure out some salary
03:41coming back the other way for the Red Wings, too.
03:43It's just not easy to do.
03:46When you look at the other teams on his list,
03:48Washington only has $3 million.
03:50Tampa has $3 million.
03:54Colorado has $1.6 million.
03:56Minnesota, $1.4 million.
03:57Florida, $1.4 million.
03:58Dallas is $1.4 million.
04:00And the Devils are $1.3 million.
04:02I mean, all these...
04:02They don't have it.
04:03They don't have the cap space
04:04without giving up one of their players
04:06that they don't likely want to give up.
04:08This is the whole thing,
04:09is that the good teams want to hang on
04:11to the good players.
04:12And yes, they'd like to add Larkin.
04:14In a perfect world for them,
04:16it's simply giving up draft capital
04:18or prospects, guys that aren't playing for them.
04:20Like, we'll give you this, this, and this.
04:21Well, Logan Cooley just signed
04:23an eight-year, $80 million deal.
04:25So it's $10 million a year.
04:26Yeah.
04:26I mean, is...
04:28That's a team that's committed to that player.
04:30They're not giving him up.
04:32They're just not.
04:34And so, you know,
04:37that's why I'm really skeptical.
04:39If you're multiple teams,
04:39this might be a super creative multiple team deal.
04:44Where, you know,
04:45the Red Wings can work something out.
04:47But I'm sorry.
04:49I just...
04:51I don't believe Bucci.
04:52I don't believe it's going to happen
04:54in seven to ten days.
04:55Because that list didn't include Montreal,
04:56who seems to be the most motivated
04:58organization out there.
04:59Right.
04:59But here's where I think it will happen.
05:01I think it will happen
05:02because I think a third team
05:03is going to get involved.
05:04They're going to have to get involved
05:07to make it work.
05:08Minnesota, it seems like
05:09they are hell-bent
05:10on trying to get something done.
05:12They've got some prospects.
05:14They...
05:14Well, maybe not great prospects.
05:15They've got a couple guys
05:16that they could offer up
05:18to some other team.
05:19And maybe that other team
05:20has the young player
05:21the Red Wings need.
05:22I think something's going to happen.
05:24I just...
05:24I don't think that they're...
05:27I understand Jimmy Davilano
05:28said something to the effect
05:29that they've kissed and made up
05:30with Larkin in the front office.
05:33I think maybe that is
05:34just in terms of
05:35I don't have to go outside
05:37this building
05:37and badmouth the other side.
05:39But I don't think it means that
05:41oh yeah, I'm willing to stay
05:42on this team
05:42for the rest of my contract.
05:44I think that ship has sailed.
05:46248-539-9797.
05:49Tom, you're on 97.1.
05:50Hello, Tom.
05:52Good afternoon, fellas.
05:53What's up?
05:54So, one of a couple...
05:55One of two things
05:56needs to happen here.
05:57Either the Wings just need to...
06:00or Larkin need to
06:01rip the Band-Aid off
06:03and listen,
06:04either you're staying
06:05or we're trading you right now.
06:06So, maybe the other thing
06:07that has to happen is
06:09they've got to back off
06:10on what their asking price is
06:11for this guy.
06:11Like, I don't know where
06:12this asking price is coming from.
06:15Why should they do that?
06:16He had 79 points
06:17four years ago,
06:18which was his career high
06:20four years ago.
06:22And, okay,
06:23he scored 30 goals a few times,
06:25but is it his contract
06:27that makes him more valuable?
06:29Yes, absolutely.
06:30To fetch more of an asking price?
06:31Yes.
06:32I mean,
06:32when you're talking about Utah,
06:34if I'm Utah,
06:35there ain't a chance in hell
06:37I'm giving up Logan Cooley
06:39or Kijiginla
06:40or even Caleb,
06:42maybe Denoyer,
06:43maybe in a package,
06:44but those first two names,
06:47those guys have more potential.
06:50Let me ask you a question, though, Tom.
06:52Why should they lower
06:53their asking price?
06:54And it is because of the contract.
06:56Absolutely.
06:57Well, it's also because of the player.
06:58It's not just a few times.
07:00I mean,
07:00it's the last five years
07:02he's been 30 goals plus.
07:04And 30 goal scorers
07:05are getting 11, 12 million now.
07:08Well, yeah,
07:09that is a good point.
07:10They are getting paid that,
07:12but at the same time,
07:13you're not going to move him
07:15for those asking prices.
07:16Then you're not going to move him.
07:18Well, that's what I'm saying.
07:20So something's got to break here.
07:21You can't just because,
07:23oh, he's only locked in at this,
07:25but we're asking for this guy
07:26and this guy
07:26who are going to be better
07:27than Dylan Larkin.
07:29And everybody that knows anything
07:31about those prospects
07:32will say that.
07:33And so there's a stalemate
07:35that doesn't make any sense to me.
07:36That's what I'm saying.
07:37So either, yeah,
07:38you've got to back off
07:39at the asking price.
07:40And because, one,
07:42it's hurting your team.
07:43I don't care what anybody says,
07:44it's hurting your team.
07:45Nobody wants that cloud
07:47over them in the dressing room.
07:48Plain and simple.
07:49Well, something's got to break here.
07:51I guess, you know, Tom,
07:55you sound like you are motivated
07:56to move him.
07:58100%.
07:58Yeah, but if you're the Red Wings,
08:00I don't, you can't move him
08:03without getting an absolute,
08:05you know, huge return.
08:07And I, that's why this is so messed up.
08:12Nothing has to give.
08:13The Red Wings don't have to do anything.
08:17They don't.
08:17Keep him until somebody
08:19meets your asking price.
08:21Or, it's, you know,
08:24I don't, you can say
08:26you know it's hurting the team,
08:28but Dylan Larkin's still out there
08:30producing for this team.
08:32Ted Gendla,
08:33he might be an outstanding prospect.
08:35Don't know,
08:36because he hasn't played
08:37in the NHL yet.
08:38You know, he's just in the minors
08:39and he was a six overall pick
08:40a couple of years ago.
08:43And playing in the Western League,
08:45he did really well.
08:46Well, he's in the American Hockey League
08:47this year.
08:48It's six games.
08:48He hasn't scored.
08:49He's got two assists in the six games.
08:51Not that that means everything,
08:53but I think it means that
08:54not everybody is,
08:55can't miss,
08:56they're going to be studs
08:57at the NHL level,
08:58they're going to score 100 points.
08:59I don't know if he projects
09:00to be that kind of a player or not.
09:02I know he's got the last name
09:03that has everybody intrigued.
09:04And then you look at
09:06some of his stats
09:08from the juniors
09:09and there's a couple
09:11of impressive seasons there,
09:12but I don't know
09:14how highly regarded he is
09:17right now as a prospect.
09:19I mean, I would imagine
09:20if the Red Wings offered
09:21Dylan Larkin for Tidja Gendla
09:23straight up,
09:23that that might get it done
09:25because you're getting
09:26the known commodity
09:28as opposed to potential.
09:30And you're also getting a guy,
09:32as we've said,
09:33for the next five years,
09:35at under $9 million a season.
09:37I just wonder if,
09:39you know,
09:39would Tidja Gendla
09:40in a first round pick
09:41get it done?
09:43Because I don't want
09:44to do it for that.
09:45What the caller said
09:47is awesome.
09:47Yeah, anybody knows
09:48anything about hockey,
09:49no, these guys are going
09:49to be better than
09:50Dylan Larkin.
09:51I would respectfully disagree.
09:53You think they are,
09:55but prospects don't
09:57always pan out.
09:59They seem to be
10:00high upside players.
10:03And Utah,
10:04if they get Dylan Larkin,
10:05that first round pick,
10:06you know,
10:08it's not going to be
10:08in the lottery.
10:10No, but Utah's also not,
10:11I mean,
10:11there's nine other teams
10:12they could talk to.
10:13And again,
10:14it could be bringing
10:15a third team in
10:16so you can deal with
10:16any team in the NHL
10:18if you can find that way
10:20to get it done.
10:21And I'm sure there are teams
10:22that are feverishly working
10:24to try to get this done.
10:26Doug Karsh,
10:27Scott Anderson,
10:2897-1.
10:29And I'll see you next time.
