00:00Dumpster fire that we were forced to witness last night for the New England Patriots.
00:06Wow.
00:06In what should have been a very winnable football game.
00:12I don't know where to begin.
00:14Wiggy, you want to begin?
00:15I would say to Drake May, today's price is not yesterday.
00:20Well, yeah.
00:21You might want to get the deal signed today.
00:23Yeah.
00:24If Robert Kraft is willing, you might want to.
00:27But, I mean, Cheyne, the text line coming at you right off the hop this morning here.
00:34No excuse.
00:35Terrible mistakes.
00:36When it comes to Drake May on the three interceptions last night.
00:40Yeah, the three interceptions were bad.
00:41The last one was the worst one.
00:42Like, in that spot, and it's just an easy play.
00:45Just throw the ball away.
00:46Throw the ball away.
00:47It's that simple.
00:48The last two, really, though, because you're driving.
00:51What were they in?
00:52The 45 when you threw that pick?
00:54Yeah, that second one, though, was right after the Dobbs drop.
00:57Like, I.
00:58Who cares about that?
00:59I don't want to hear what the Dobbs dropped.
01:00Dobbs stunk.
01:00That matters.
01:01It really does.
01:02It does.
01:03Also, Dobbs owes us 65 of the 68 million that he signed for back, if that's possible.
01:10If Drake May plays like that, it's totally irrelevant.
01:14That was.
01:14Those decisions are.
01:16Horrible.
01:16Are crushing.
01:18That is.
01:19I.
01:19That.
01:20You got outplayed by Drew Locke.
01:22Yeah, you are now 0 and 12 in the regular season against teams with winning records.
01:27That was a.
01:27That's wrong, by the way, because the Seahawks didn't have a winning record entering this
01:31game.
01:31They were 0 and 0.
01:32And last year, they beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who had at the time a winning record, which
01:36was 6 and 3.
01:38So.
01:38Woohoo.
01:381 and 11.
01:39Let's all get a duck post.
01:40That.
01:41No, but I also think what did Drake learn, though?
01:43Because last season, we talked about the fact that sometimes he rushed things and he made
01:47poor mistakes.
01:48You think going into this season where he's got a full year under his belt of being in
01:52the starter, you'd learn from that.
01:54To me, that's where things fell apart.
01:56It's it's he had a good first half.
01:58Then the second half, it was like, where'd he go?
02:00Well, I think the thing that I noticed from him is that he just at times, because he's
02:07a good quarterback, he's a good athlete.
02:09And when he's running and he's pushing off his back foot, he just tends to like throw
02:14the ball up in the air.
02:15Yeah.
02:15Like the first one to Dobbs, like Dobbs is not really known as a high point, go get
02:22the ball.
02:22So you're throwing up a jump ball to a guy that's it's not really first.
02:26You're talking about the first interception, not the Dobbs drop.
02:30No, not the Dobbs drop.
02:31I don't know if that's on Dobbs.
02:32Was that supposed to was that ball supposed to be the Dobbs go the wrong way?
02:36Was it supposed to be left shoulder?
02:38Was it no, it looked like a jump ball that he was throwing up there.
02:41One of those plays that you do when you generally have like a Mike Evans type of receiver, but
02:45that's not really who Dobbs is.
02:47Romeo drops.
02:48I like to call him.
02:49I mean, the drop on him, that's clearly on him.
02:51The interceptions are just bad decisions.
02:54The one at the end of the game is the same thing.
02:55He's wrong.
02:56He gets a little bit of pressure.
02:58He's fading backwards.
02:59He's mechanics.
03:00He was throwing off his back foot on all three of those interceptions.
03:03And then he's just trying to throw a jump ball up to Mac, uh, Mac Hollins in that
03:07situation at that top point in time, just throw it away, kick the field goal and head
03:11to overtime.
03:12The only place he makes are when things break down and the play that's designed doesn't
03:15actually come to fruition.
03:17Like yesterday, the only things he was doing was running for first downs when things fell
03:21apart around him.
03:22Like, I mean, we can get to Josh McKinley and get to everything, but what, what Drake
03:27may did this whole season is predicated on Drake may taking a step forward off of last
03:32year.
03:32And the step backward that he took last night was unprecedented.
03:36Those throws in those spots were absolutely awful.
03:40Yeah.
03:40It's not some unprecedented step back though.
03:42It's, it's weak.
03:43It's week one of the NFL season in a game.
03:46They were being uber conservative and he hasn't played, he didn't play a single post preseason
03:50snap.
03:51Like, I think, I think all of those things play into effect.
03:53He completely under through the deep ball to AJ Brown early, totally in that game.
04:00Yeah, no, I, I totally agree.
04:02But I, my, my point is, is I think in retrospect, like, I don't know, maybe he should have played
04:07a series or two in the preseason.
04:09Maybe get some reps for your entire offense in the preseason.
04:14Might've helped.
04:14Certainly.
04:15Maybe not throw the ball to the other team on a play that you absolutely can't do it.
04:18Something that a fourth grader knows.
04:20We can't change what we're saying now though, during the preseason.
04:23I believe, Shyam, you were saying it's the right idea that he does not play.
04:26No, I said I was okay with it.
04:28I mean, to now say, oh, maybe he should have gotten a few reps.
04:31That's what happens.
04:32Things change and you have to look at it in retrospect, as we've, as we've learned on
04:35the show, hindsight 2020.
04:37But like the, the issue too is, is on top of that, like for a guy who didn't play at
04:41all in the preseason, you decided to come out and you were constantly just running the
04:45football, you never got him in a rhythm.
04:47You never got him to get multiple passes strung together and find a way to beat the Seahawks
04:52defense.
04:53You had seven months after you got your ass kicked by this defense to come up with a
04:57way to attack it.
04:58And you didn't.
04:59Well, I will give them credit for figuring out they were, you know, they were back to
05:05the slot blitz with Witherspoon a lot.
05:08And they did.
05:08Drake was ready for that.
05:10And they, and they did.
05:11They did.
05:12For two quarters.
05:12They were ready for it.
05:13Yes, they did game plan on that.
05:15I will, I will say.
05:16Yeah.
05:16And they had a nice tunnel screen, did a good job with it in the first half, but that's
05:22it.
05:22And you got, you got a gift when it came to Sam Darnold going down early in that football
05:28game.
05:28I, I, the update on that, I guess, is it's not a fracture.
05:32It doesn't seem to be a fracture.
05:34So he will not be gone for the season.
05:37I, there's no update yet.
05:39Clear update yet on AJ Brown.
05:41I'm, I'm guessing if that, I mean, it looked like maybe a high ankle spray.
05:46I don't know.
05:46He wasn't, he wasn't crying like Mac Jones was when, when he did his.
05:50So maybe, well, I, maybe it isn't.
05:52I don't know.
05:52It's going to be, it's a, it's a couple of weeks, right?
05:54It's gotta be a couple of weeks.
05:56I don't know.
05:56But you could tell based off the way your offense was, you were already conservative
06:01with AJ Brown.
06:02Then when he went out of the game, you got extremely conservative.
06:06So what's your, like, I thought, what does that tell you about their thoughts on
06:10Drake May?
06:10Yeah, I don't, that's why I was just getting ready.
06:12It's like, I don't know.
06:13Like I was expecting, all right.
06:15AJ Brown, Romeo Dobbs, Drake May, second year in Josh McDaniels offense coming out
06:20where play action was spreading them out.
06:23We're throwing the ball all over the field.
06:24But it was like, you know, it was a third and five and you ran like an outside
06:29zone play.
06:30Just giving it to Ramondre.
06:32And the end of the first half was abhorrent.
06:34And I don't know, like.
06:35Abhorrent decision maker.
06:36And I don't know.
06:37It was super conservative.
06:38Yeah, but I don't know if that's, what are we doing?
06:40You have a chance to just put the nail in the coffin and end the game right
06:43there.
06:44You score points.
06:44You get the ball back in half.
06:45The game's over.
06:46But who is that?
06:47It's like, I think it's a lot of it's variable.
06:51Like the conservative nature.
06:52He's telling Josh, hey, we're just going to run the ball here.
06:54Punt it.
06:55We'll take our 10 points.
06:56And, and Drew Locke's going to make a mistake, which he did not.
06:58Right.
06:59And then the second half is when he kind of, it was a couple of plays.
07:03It was the Jarrett Stidham game plan, except they weren't playing in the snow and
07:05they were playing against the defense that kicked your ass seven months ago.
07:08Yeah.
07:08He had a good Drew Locke had a couple of bootlegs or able to get out outside the
07:11pocket.
07:12The, the, um, the touchdown to JSN, they blitzed Gonzalez.
07:17And then it was like, the safety was too deep.
07:19So I don't really fast, by the way.
07:21Yeah.
07:21So, so I don't know what really would happen on that, uh, on that defense there
07:25because it was just a little sit down route by JSN.
07:28And the defense though, to me is they were perfectly fine.
07:31Like I can't, I can't get on the defense.
07:33Well, except for that touchdown.
07:34I mean, when Aaron Price is also ripping off seven yards of carry, but if you're
07:38going to blitz, you got to make sure that you're near the receiver when the
07:41quarterback gets the ball out so you can rally wrap up and tackle.
07:45Um, so that was the one issue, but I thought, you know, they got good pressure.
07:49I thought they switched it up.
07:51I, I, I thought that Gabe Ackes looked, he looked solid.
07:54Yeah.
07:55Will Campbell look good when blocking guys in the back.
07:58Um, so that was solid though.
08:00I'm not even going to, I'm not even going to cap.
08:02He was.
08:03He looked, he looked stronger.
08:05He looked bigger.
08:05I was very happy for him.
08:07All the highlight reel they showed, he was just doing cut blocks at the line of
08:10scrimmage.
08:10He was diving at the guy's knees.
08:12Well, I mean, uh, to be fair, it could be that he was just falling over.
08:16Like that happens to me a lot, Curtis.
08:18I, I wish Grable just pooped himself and didn't throw.
08:20I mean, I wish May just pooped himself.
08:22I could watch that a thousand times.
08:25What is going through your brain?
08:28It's third and five, a field goal just sends it to overtime.
08:32Yeah.
08:32The only thing you can't do is what he did.
08:36Right.
08:36How is that possible?
08:38I have no idea.
08:39Throw it to the 15th freaking row.
08:41Yeah.
08:41I don't know what he was thinking.
08:43And then like, it's very disappointing.
08:45It's not disappointing.
08:46It's like, it is, it's foundationally altering.
08:50It's not found.
08:51You are so overreactive.
08:53Shive's going to go home.
08:55He's so hyperbolic.
08:57It is like, you need to take a giant chill pill.
08:59It's week one.
09:00That's what radio's at its best when we all take chill pills.
09:03They lost to the Raiders last year who won two games in week one.
09:07This is entirely, and you looked worse in that game.
09:10Tell me a great quarterback who makes that throw.
09:13Curtis, guys have made bad throws before.
09:16I know.
09:16Not in that spot.
09:17In that place.
09:18Yes, guys have made bad throws in those spots before.
09:21I think Joe Milton throws that ball away.
09:24Yeah, okay.
09:24Joe Milton tries to run for it.
09:26I'm okay.
09:27Much better.
09:28I'm okay with some of the it's only week one excusing.
09:35I'm okay with that.
09:37But don't tell me that a team that got to the Super Bowl last year
09:40and a quarterback that was in the conversation when it comes to being
09:46the MVP of the league ought to be able to, when you control that game
09:51the way you controlled it, when you get the benefit of the quarterback
09:54going down, control it in the first half, you ought to be able to win
09:57that football game.
09:58And you shouldn't be making, as Curtis says, dumb mistakes.
10:02You should not be making dumb mistakes.
10:05I won't panic.
10:06But the thing that I look at is like, all right, you want to look at the rust
10:10and the performance and how they play.
10:12For me, it's the mental errors, right?
10:15Those are things that, like, you know, clearly we're talking about the Drake
10:19May interceptions.
10:20Like, those are things that we know.
10:22Like, the drops and stuff like that.
10:24All right.
10:24It's week one.
10:25I get it.
10:26I'll give you a mulligan.
10:28Again, it's a game that you had an opportunity to win that we've been
10:33talking about.
10:33But to me, it's the mental mistakes that things you should know,
10:37football game situations.
10:39508 text.
10:40Shine, please respond.
10:42Drake May played like a rookie last night.
10:45No progressions.
10:46No middle of the field looks awful.
10:49There was no, what middle of the field look did you want?
10:51I highly recommend.
10:53Go watch.
10:54Chris Collinsworth did a great job of breaking this game down multiple times
10:57and they showed the behind Drake May camera view.
11:00He drops back.
11:01He goes through three reads and nobody's freaking open.
11:03Nobody.
11:04Especially post-A.J. Brown going down.
11:06Nobody was open.
11:07Well, he found some Seahawks.
11:10Yeah, the whole line did a good job.
11:11I'll give him credit.
11:12Yeah.
11:13Especially pass protection.
11:15Their run blocking was a little bit suspect, but their pass protection was
11:19pretty fine.
11:19All right.
11:20Well, a week one loss for the New England Patriots, and you can talk about that
11:26all morning long on this show.
11:28We will get two leads coming up shortly.
11:31Bill O'Brien will join us at 645 this morning.
11:35They said it coming up at 715.
11:39That will include what Mike Rabel said after the cluster F that he coached last
11:45night and other things.
11:46We will be joined here in the studio this morning by Rob Ninkovich at 830 with his
11:53thoughts on last night's game.
11:55And as always, pill notes at 930 on this show.
12:01So you can leave one on the New England Patriots and the result last night or on any
12:08other topic that is on your mind on the Odyssey app.
12:13Leave us a voice note.
12:15We'll play the best ones back later.
12:17Another Roman bomb last night.
12:19Curtis, that's a positive.
12:21Are you contractually obligated to mention Roman Anthony homebabs?
12:24Well, I mean, listen, that's three, I believe.
12:27I mean, I think we have the...
12:28Five for five.
12:29What a night.
12:29Have a great week.
12:29Have a great week.
12:29Have a great week.
12:29Have a great week.
12:29Have a great week.
