00:00Rich, I got to ask you, man, right out of the gate here, I mean, obviously, your takeaways on this
00:06case here, I mean, you know, tell me if I'm wrong here on this.
00:11So if they do rule against him and they end up maybe extended this case and they play a player
00:17this weekend against Clemson, could they be playing an illegal player and an eligible player?
00:23Could they be risking everything this coming year if they play this player and the judge rules against them?
00:29Yeah, and you're referring to LSU and the big game Saturday night against Clemson.
00:34Yeah, I would be shocked, to be honest, Dan, and by the way, good to be on with you today,
00:38talking college football.
00:40We got a semi-slate beginning tonight of games.
00:44Yeah, it's bizarro world in college football.
00:47I mean, it's kind of consistent with what we've seen over the past couple of years.
00:50We're now in courts to determine whether the Jack Pyburn is one of the kids for LSU, former Tampa Bay
00:57Buccaneer.
00:59I mean, this is straight out of the onion.
01:01The fact that we're having this conversation never thought this would have been something we would talk about in terms
01:07of player eligibility.
01:08Kids that are on NFL rosters previously now going back to school, a lot of this is certainly tied to
01:15NIL money.
01:16If there wasn't money involved and an opportunity to make six digits in some cases to go back to college,
01:22that wouldn't even be an opportunity that kids would be entertaining.
01:25They'd be looking to become accountants or salesmen or whatever the case may be.
01:29I don't know where this case is going to go, but it's going to have an impact on the season
01:34ahead.
01:34I applaud the conferences.
01:36Big Ten SEC have come out and said there are going to be ramifications if you do this.
01:41I mean, we have to draw the line somewhere.
01:44And former NFL players playing on Saturdays is a hill that I'm willing to die on at this point.
01:51How about what the judge is ruling, though, in Dallas on Thursday of last week when he said, hey, you're
01:56going to have to come into court to prove to me that these kids are not eligible to be able
02:00to play.
02:01Just because you say they're not eligible, that's not quite legal here.
02:05I mean, do you think that they're going to circumnavigate the courts?
02:09They're going to try to?
02:10Because really, realistically, Rich, what they did with that Brandon Sorsby case, they, you know, they basically came out, they
02:18were lining up against Texas Tech.
02:20They were doing everything legally.
02:22They were wrong because the judge had ruled against them.
02:25But yet they put so much pressure.
02:26And to your point, you think the Big Ten and the Southeastern Conference are strong enough to put that kind
02:32of pressure on an institution where they're going to say, hey, guess what?
02:35I don't care what the court says.
02:36This is where we're going and how we're going to play football this fall.
02:40Yeah, I do.
02:41Particularly those two power four conferences, they have the greatest might of any conferences in the country by far.
02:48Big Ten and SEC have said that coaches will be suspended.
02:51There will be massive ramifications for schools that use players that were previously in the NFL.
02:58And right now we live in a world where the NCAA has been completely neutered.
03:02So, I mean, they have no impact in what's happening moving forward.
03:06So, it's going to come down to the conference commissioners and those leagues to make these kinds of decisions.
03:13And again, you know, there's so many things.
03:15It's been this slippery slope that we've seen in all college athletics.
03:20We don't exist in a world with a Pac-12 any longer.
03:23You know, Oregon and UCLA play in the Big Ten.
03:26And we have NIL money, which in theory I don't have a problem with, Dan.
03:31I don't know where you stand on it.
03:33Players getting paid I'm okay with.
03:35But having these consortiums, these large pay-for-play Texas Tech type models, not really a fan of that when
03:44it comes to equity on the field.
03:46So, yeah, this is the next evolution.
03:49I actually saw odds come up yesterday or the day before.
03:52There are books that are posting odds on who will be the first program to sue for the loss of
03:59a game.
04:00Bad call.
04:00And again, like this isn't something I'd ever thought we'd be talking about.
04:04But considering where we are right now, could we see that in the near future in college athletics?
04:10Why not at this point?
