02:45Hi, I'm Gary Costanza.
02:47It was once said that battle is in the eye of the beholder,
02:49and you must become the general of that battle.
02:51I hope that the techniques that you get from the tape series will help you reach that goal.
02:55Enjoy, and good luck.
03:07On this tape here, throwing techniques, we're going to be emphasizing to unbalance your opponent.
03:13If Sean comes over and pushes at me, I want you to remember when an opponent pushes, you must pull.
03:20If they pull, you push.
03:24Now, very important to remember that basic philosophy.
03:27I'll go over it again.
03:27It's so simple that sometimes, you know, we go by it quickly.
03:31If a person pushes at you, pull them.
03:35If they pull you, push them.
03:38And think of it as how a car would be driving.
03:41If he pushes at five miles an hour, pull him at ten.
03:45If he pulls you at five miles an hour, push him at ten.
03:49How that works in the philosophy of the judo is that if I'm four units of strength,
03:54and he's ten units of strength, when he pushes at me,
03:58I am now still four units of strength because I'm in balance.
04:01He is less than four units of strength.
04:03Now, I'm the stronger.
04:05So, always remembering, I'm going to try to unbalance him.
04:09Kazushi means to unbalance.
04:10And there's different ways.
04:12Any time you get a person on his feet, off of his toes, any direction.
04:16Corner, corner, corner, corner, side, and side.
04:25If you can get this person to go, direct him, then at that point you can manipulate him.
04:31To give you an example of that, when Sean goes to push at me, I'm going to pull.
04:38Now, if you notice, I could probably throw Sean with just the pull.
04:42I'm going to take him, and I could throw him.
04:46Very easily done.
04:47It's not fancy.
04:48It's very basic.
04:49It could save your life.
04:51Now, what I'm going to do, I'm going to add, if you notice, my left foot will be blocking Sean's
04:56right shin.
04:57He's going to come forward.
04:59I'm going to push.
05:00As he pushes, I will pull, pull, pull, until he trips over my foot.
05:06Now, we'll try that in fast speed.
05:25The first technique we're going to do, Sean's going to be throwing a right-handed hook punch to the face.
05:31What we're going to do with this is that we're going to have to have a complete body movement
05:34and lead Sean so that his momentum will be going this way, away from me,
05:41so I'm in balance and Sean is off balance.
05:45If you notice what I'm doing here, my left hand is pulling his right hand.
05:51If you notice why, in this angle here, the left hand pulls the right hand.
05:57My right hand goes behind Sean's back of his head.
06:02So this way, with the pull of my left hand and the right hand behind the head,
06:09this will make Sean continue to go forward while I move out of the way.
06:16So slow motion, it'll look like this.
06:22One time.
06:23Second slow motion.
06:28Full speed.
06:33Full speed.
06:35This angle.
06:49Full speed.
06:52This angle.
07:10Full speed.
07:11This angle.
07:13Full speed.
07:14This angle.
07:15Full speed.
07:27The second technique we're going to be showing you will be a running type of tackle bear
07:32hug technique, a defense for that.
07:34Same principle as we do with the first technique of pushing, pulling, getting his body off balance,
07:40you moving out of the way and letting the person fall.
07:45Again, the right hand is going to lift up his left hand high.
07:50My left hand will be taking the head downward at the same time that the right hand comes
07:55up.
07:56This motion with the torque of my body will send Sean's momentum in what they call in
08:01Chinese the Qi and Japanese the Qi, is that his energy, his momentum, his force is being
08:06led by me doing this.
08:08So when he comes in, the head goes down quickly, his left arm comes up.
08:13I lead him into a position where he is off balance and I'm still in balance.
08:18Slowly.
08:22Again, slow motion.
08:27Now at full speed, the momentum of course will carry him quicker and it happens faster.
08:32The head pull is stronger.
08:34The arm lift is stronger and it must all be in one with a complete body movement because
08:38there's a lot of power in circles.
08:39The more I can circle out of the way, the stronger for me to throw Sean.
08:44инome, the more?
08:48He leads up.
08:49Here's the seat to press the button on your back.
08:59Come.
09:04Come.
09:05Go.
09:22What's that?
09:24What's that?
09:28What's that?
09:41On this technique, Sean's going to be throwing a left-handed back fist to the face.
09:47What I'm going to do here, we're going to use a technique that they use in the Filipino arts, trapping
09:51hands.
09:51What I'm doing with this, the first hand brushes, second hand grabs.
09:58Okay, if you watch slowly, brush and grab.
10:02At this point here, he comes forward, that slows him down, slows the momentum down,
10:08gives me a chance to move to my right, to get away from the power of the strike.
10:14So as I lead my body away, I brush and I hold.
10:19At this point here, I'm going to take his arm through with a pain compliance and a joint lock.
10:25I'm going to take his arm over, still with the pain compliance, and that will cause Sean to go over
10:32the top.
10:33Again, if you watch slowly, from this angle, brush, hold.
10:38Taking the arm through, joint lock on top, continue the throw, in slow motion.
10:50You're going to take him to move.
10:51Full power.
10:53Yes, yes.
10:58Hi.
11:00Hi.
11:14Hi.
11:16Hi.
11:22So, with that, so, with that, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
11:28yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
11:28yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
11:28yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
11:28yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
11:43yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
12:05Yes, yes!
12:07Yes, yes!
12:08Yes!
12:11To with it!
12:12To with it!
12:23On technique number four, Sean's going to be throwing a right-handed back fist now rather than a left-handed
12:29back fist.
12:30Again, you notice the same intro. Brush and hold.
12:34What this is going to do for me, it's going to allow me to get behind Sean's back before this
12:39can strike me.
12:40The trapping hands are very effective.
12:44What it does, it slows the motion down, especially if he has a weapon.
12:47On our other tapes, we'll get into club attacks and knives where this is critical.
12:52At this point now, against an empty hand, there's a little more time, there's a little more maybe room for
12:58error
12:58because he doesn't have a deadly force in his hand.
13:00But at this point, brush and hold.
13:02What this gives me the time to do is to get to Sean's back.
13:09With my right arm, I come around.
13:11Before he can change his momentum, I take the shoulder and throw him backwards.
13:18And again, if he does not have the ability to fall, then he will be severely hurt because the head,
13:23let's go backward,
13:25the head at this point, you're not allowed to fall properly, will hit and you don't realize how much your
13:34head weighs
13:34because it's supported by your shoulders.
13:37If you don't have the ability to break fall, then your head will smash off the ground and that alone
13:42will do a job on you.
13:43So what we're going to do here, slow motion, I brush, I hold enough to give me the time.
13:50If you notice here how close I am to his back.
13:53Because what I do, I don't spin away from him.
13:55I'm not going to come outside.
13:56What I'm going to do, I'm going to stay very, very close.
14:00Here, if you notice how close I am to the back.
14:03When you have the safest place in the hurricane is in the eye.
14:07My job is to stay close to my opponent for the grappling range.
14:10When he strikes, here, I'm close.
14:15My momentum still grabs and I pull.
14:21Now at full speed.
14:29Full speed in this angle.
14:31Watch how closely again we emphasize I stay close to my back on his back.
14:36Yeah.
15:04full speed in this angle watch how closely again
15:07we emphasize I stay close to back my back and his back
15:38full speed in this angle watch how closely again we emphasize I stay close to back
15:44my back and his back
16:14yeah
16:15on this technique Sean's going to be doing a lapel grab and kind of like a sucker punch
16:41right hand hook
16:43okay watch again the attack is lapel grab
16:46right hand hook
16:48now what I'm going to do with this we call this an arm bar throw
16:50because what I'm going to be doing with Sean this is an arm bar
16:53anytime you extend the elbow out you hyper extend it this is an arm bar using jiu-jitsu
16:59judo keto
16:59what we're going to do here we're going to use the arm bar
17:02and also block the punch at the same time
17:06leading into the arm bar now the critical thing is this
17:08if you can see from this angle here watch how my left hand brush blocks his right
17:15as I reach for the arm bar so he grabs I'm not just doing this because I'll be hit
17:22so I'm doing here I'm doing this I'm brushing the block so it deflects the punch by me
17:30doesn't have to be far out it just has to clear my head so it's just a slight brush as
17:39I grab to his hand holding the lapel
17:44if you watch closely I brush I grab
17:50now at this point if something should go wrong during this process and I happen to see something at any
17:55time go wrong at this point
17:56I can always alter the moves I can get into something else I can drive knees
18:01I can always alter depending on how much knowledge you have to proceed from there
18:05but this technique is designed to distract him
18:09there's the brush the grab
18:11at this point take the elbow over
18:15and the compliance of the pain will make his feet go over the top
18:19and I throw him with an arm bar throw
18:25now put it together slow motion but you can still see the parts
18:28he grabs
18:29I slightly step forward with my left foot just a slight bit
18:34so I can move away from this
18:37this gives me my chance to always follow up
18:40he grabs
18:42I brush and block
18:44I grab the elbow
18:47I throw
18:47I throw
18:47I 말йom
18:51full speed
18:58this angle
19:05yes
19:29This angle?
19:53This angle.
20:28This angle.
20:45On this technique, Sean is going to be running at me with a two-handed type of tackle technique.
20:51Okay.
20:51What we're going to do here, we're going to emphasize the sacrifice throws in, say, a
20:55judo atmosphere.
20:56What we're going to do, but this is for combat rather than sport.
20:59You have to remember what we're trying to do in this tape.
21:02We're taking the arts that are phenomenal for each group that they've been in.
21:07What we're doing here, we're applying those arts, slightly changing them in our system
21:11to apply it to the street techniques and for combat.
21:14So what I'm doing here, I'm doing a sacrifice throw.
21:16The theory behind a sacrifice throw is that when I grab him, his momentum, I'm dropping
21:21to the floor.
21:22When I drop to the floor, I'm actually holding on his body.
21:26So I'm not hitting as hard as it might look.
21:29So when I sacrifice myself down, I'm being held up while Sean will go over the top because
21:35he's not expecting me to drop down, his formal motion will go forward.
21:40And of course, there is a big surprise type of attitude here because he's not expecting
21:45that.
21:45So the element of surprise is very important.
21:47So the timing is very, very important.
21:49If I go down too soon, he might stop and he could stop me or do something else.
21:53If I go down too late, it affects the throw.
21:55So it has to be time that when he comes forward, I have to know just when I'm going to
22:00drop.
22:01Okay.
22:02Now we're going to do this kind of a half speed for you so you can see it and then
22:06we'll do
22:06it full speed.
22:08Okay.
22:08If you watch, you notice that when I threw Sean, my body went, I kicked my right leg out.
22:18I came forward and under and glided and guided him over me.
22:26Okay.
22:26Let's do, I'll do two at full, at full speed.
22:30Okay.
22:33If you notice from this position here, when I threw Sean, my head is up.
22:39I break him to fall and I'm leading him over.
22:42Very important that I don't land on my back.
22:46Your opponent should land on his back.
22:47You should be up and off your spine at this point, leading him.
22:52Full power again.
22:55Pretty-ie-ie-ie.
22:56Very, very, very, very important.
23:15If you notice from this position here, when I threw Sean, my head is up.
23:20I break in the fall, and I'm leading him over.
23:23Very important that I don't land on my back.
23:27Your opponent should land on his back.
23:29You should be up and off your spine at this point leading him.
23:33Full power again.
23:36Let's go!
23:57If you notice from this position here, when I threw Sean, my head is up.
24:02I break in the fall, and I'm leading him over.
24:05Very important that I don't land on my back.
24:09Your opponent should land on his back.
24:11You should be up and off your spine at this point leading him.
24:15Full power again.
24:38If you notice from this position here, when I threw Sean, my head is up.
24:44I break in the fall, and I'm leading him over.
24:47Very important that I don't land on my back.
24:50Your opponent should land on his back.
24:53You should be up and off your spine at this point leading him.
24:57Full power again.
25:10And this technique here, you're going to see Sean again rush me.
25:15If you stay, I'm going to be knocked over.
25:18What we try to teach, especially for women or somebody who's bigger than you, if a person
25:22is coming at you, the worst thing to try to do is to try and struggle with this man.
25:26In that case, the bigger man wins.
25:28What we're going to do again, now this whole tape and a lot of this tape is going to be
25:31devised so we can show you that the principle of push and pull is going to be very, very important.
25:38So when Sean comes to rush again, like a bear hug type of technique or a tackle technique,
25:43again, I'm going to try to lead Sean.
25:46You notice how I moved out of the way.
25:47Hey, this gives me enough time to go in for my throw.
25:51He comes forward.
25:53I move.
25:54I throw.
25:56You can see from this angle here, you notice my body movement and my feet, I move.
26:03The footwork is very, very important.
26:05The problem sometimes with the martial arts is that everybody puts a great emphasis on
26:10the hands and they forget about the feet.
26:12So what I want to emphasize here is the body movement and the footwork that goes on even
26:18though the hands are doing their job.
26:19At this point, you notice the body movement.
26:22Now my right leg will insert in front of Sean's feet.
26:28He comes around.
26:29My right leg, in order to throw him, you notice now I've inserted the right leg in front.
26:36With just the hands, you notice the first move, my feet were here.
26:40Now my feet will move in a position for a throw.
26:47Full power.
26:58This point here, you have your joint locks to follow up.
27:03By here, you see your footwork outta there.
27:18I will wait for this.
27:19Good goal.
27:20Go inівом!
27:25Over here, you see your footwork.
27:25Yes.
27:46This point here, you have your joint locks to follow up.
28:03In this technique here, Sean is going to be throwing an overhand right-handed hook punch.
28:10Now the difference with this punch is coming a little bit more frontward, so you must move
28:15the whole body again.
28:16I'm leaning forward, taking his momentum for the throw.
28:24His momentum takes him over the top.
28:30The feet go inside, wind up parallel to each other, so I can lift him on my throw with the
28:40arm.
28:41What makes the throw easier, the harder Sean runs at me, the harder he throws his punch,
28:47the easier it is for me to throw him.
28:50We know in any of the arts, similar to Judo or Jiu-Jitsu, it's minimum effort with maximum
28:56results.
28:57What I'm trying to do here is to lose as little of my energy as I can to the point
29:04that his weight almost feels like it's just a gi top I'm throwing.
29:07That's all I want it to feel like.
29:08When the technique is perfect, his weight should almost feel like I'm throwing a gi top.
29:17Okay?
29:18There's where you try to have your ultimate technique.
29:20If your technique fails or it's not right on, that's where strength will help you.
29:26The ability to overpower somebody with strength and a combination of technique.
29:32So slowly, he comes in.
29:35I turn, I pull, always allowing myself for a follow-up of a knee to the ribs, to a joint
29:43lock on the elbow, to a joint lock on the wrist and the elbow.
29:49Slow motion on this side, he comes forward, I grab, I pull, I lock, at that point.
29:58Full power.
30:01Okay.
30:05One more.
30:07Peace.
30:08Peace.
30:09Peace.
30:11Peace.
30:12Peace.
30:13Peace.
30:13Peace.
30:14Peace.
30:15Peace.
30:26Peace.
30:31Peace.
30:32Peace.
30:34Peace.
30:35Peace.
30:35Peace.
30:36Peace.
30:36Peace.
30:37Peace.
30:37Peace.
30:37Peace.
30:39Peace.
30:42Peace.
30:43Peace.
30:44Peace.
30:45Peace.
30:45Peace.
30:46Peace.
31:06In this technique, Sean's going to be doing again a running type of tackle technique.
31:11Now the difference in this is instead of doing a sacrifice throw, instead of moving my body
31:16out of the way, this is a little bit different now.
31:20One of the ways to stop somebody assaulting you is to stop the power right at its source.
31:24If you notice here, I'm going to stay, and I'm going to strike two reverse ridge hands
31:31into the rib area.
31:33That momentum stops at that point.
31:36So he comes in, come in.
31:42Now it enables me to go into the throw.
31:47At this point here, I'm going to hip throw.
31:49I'll take him over the hip.
31:53Stand up.
31:55Take my right heel, strike.
31:58Now when I go down to the floor, I'm breaking the elbow at the same time in the process.
32:09Slow motion.
32:25Full speed.
32:29Never go down.
32:29Put it down.universal.
32:29.
32:29Ice, ice, ice, ice.
32:34Ice.
32:41Ice, ice, ice, ice.
33:07Ice, ice, ice, ice.
33:13Ice.
33:20Ice, ice, ice.
33:59Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
34:15Okay, Sean is going to come in on me now with a hip throw, trying to aggressively attack
34:20me with a type of a judo throw.
34:22He's going to come forward, he's going to try to grab and throw me.
34:27Now, there's defenses for this particular hip throw.
34:30One of the easiest things to do as he comes in is to block the hip, then I can maybe
34:35counter
34:36him.
34:36What I'm going to do here, I'm going to counter Sean with the same throw he's trying to attempt
34:41on me.
34:42So as he comes in, you notice he's coming in with a major hip throw.
34:47What I'm going to do, I'm going to try to beat his hip throw with my own.
34:53He comes forward, I want to beat him, throw him on the exact throw that he's trying to
34:56throw me on.
34:58So if you watch again, he comes forward with a hip throw.
35:00So what I'm going to do is try to beat that throw with my own.
35:07Slow motion, yes, yes, yes, this side, if you watch slow motion here, you watch the left
35:20foot will go right across his body to beat him at that point.
35:29Full power.
36:12She put it
36:13She put it. Yes, ah
36:14She put it. Yes, ah
36:32And this technique shall be coming in again with a hip throw if you notice what he's gonna do the
36:37same hip throw that I
36:37Switched on him previously and beat him to the punch on that one what we're doing here is that I'm
36:43going to step back
36:45When his right leg comes in my left leg steps back
36:49You notice on this side I
36:52Step back in order for me so I can grab this leg here
36:56If you notice the right hand
36:58Will be grabbing his lapel
37:01So he comes in
37:03Left hand grabs the right leg right hand grabs the left lapel
37:09Again slow motion
37:12This side
37:18Now
37:19When Sean comes in full power, I have to be able to do that in one motion
37:23Stepping back clearing the position so his leg will be coming forward
37:28Grabbing him at the same time and lifting slow motion a little bit of speed and then we'll do it
37:33full-on
37:39Other side slow motion
37:47Full speed
