02:41Hi, I'm Gary Costanza.
02:43It was once said that battle is in the eye of the beholder,
02:46and you must become the general of that battle.
02:48I hope that the techniques that you get from the tape series
02:50will help you reach that goal.
02:51Enjoy, and good luck.
03:04On this tape here, throwing techniques,
03:06we're going to be emphasizing to unbalance your opponent.
03:10If Sean comes over and pushes at me,
03:12I want you to remember when an opponent pushes, you must pull.
03:17If they pull, you push.
03:20Now, very important to remember that basic philosophy.
03:23I'll go over it again.
03:24It's so simple that sometimes, you know, we go by it quickly.
03:27If a person pushes at you, pull them.
03:31If they pull you, push them.
03:34And think of it as how a car would be driving.
03:37If he pushes at five miles an hour, pull him at ten.
03:42If he pulls you at five miles an hour, push him at ten.
03:46How that works in the philosophy of the judo
03:48is that if I'm four units of strength,
03:51and he's ten units of strength,
03:52when he pushes at me,
03:54I am now still four units of strength because I'm in balance.
03:57He is less than four units of strength.
03:59Now, I'm the stronger.
04:01So always remembering,
04:03I'm going to try to unbalance him.
04:05Kazushi means to unbalance.
04:07And there's different ways.
04:08Any time you get a person on his feet,
04:11off of his toes, any direction.
04:13Corner, corner, corner, corner.
04:20Side and side.
04:22If you can get this person to go, direct him,
04:26then at that point you can manipulate him.
04:27I'll give you an example of that.
04:31When Sean goes to push at me,
04:33I'm going to pull.
04:34Now, if you notice,
04:36I could probably throw Sean with just the pull.
04:38I'm going to take him,
04:39and I could throw him.
04:42Very easily done.
04:44It's not fancy.
04:45It's very basic.
04:46It could save your life.
04:47Now what I'm going to do,
04:48I'm going to add,
04:49if you notice,
04:50my left foot will be blocking Sean's right shin.
04:54He's going to come forward.
04:55I'm going to push.
04:56As he pushes,
04:57I will pull, pull, pull,
04:59until he trips over my foot.
05:02Now we'll try that in fast speed.
05:21And this technique,
05:23Sean's going to be coming with a right hook punch to the head.
05:26And like a lot of our techniques we've done so far,
05:28I'm going to lead his momentum forward.
05:32I'm going to grab his right hand with my left hand.
05:36I'm going to go over the top,
05:41continuing his motion,
05:42so he falls hopefully over my leg or hip or both.
05:47Watch for this angle again.
05:48This seems to be the better side here.
05:50We're going to go pull,
05:54over the top.
05:55Now what I'm doing here,
05:56he has no way can he punch me with this hand.
06:01Because what's going to happen,
06:02this hand flies back behind him.
06:05As I torque his body,
06:07that hand goes away from me.
06:11So a lot of times we do seminars
06:12and different things like this.
06:13People are always saying the what ifs.
06:15There are no what ifs at this point.
06:16Because I'm not allowing him
06:20to strike me with this hand.
06:23Slow motion.
06:25The turn.
06:28Other side.
06:35One more time on this side here.
06:37Now if you watch,
06:37we'll speed it up full power.
06:42Full power on this side.
06:58Full power on this side.
07:03Full power on this side.
07:06Ace.
07:07Ace.
07:23Ace.
07:25Full power on this side.
07:28Ace.
07:29Ace.
07:31Ace.
07:31Ace.
07:31Ace.
08:01And this technique, Sean's going to be throwing another right-hand hook punch.
08:05Again, you notice the similarity of these techniques all the time.
08:09The basic thing that I want to always do is to be able to glide, guide him, pull him off
08:15balance into whatever throw that I may do against him.
08:18I'm going to pull.
08:20At this point here, my right arm is going to go inside and do a strike to the groin area.
08:28I'm going to go under Sean at this point.
08:32The strike and the pull.
08:35If you watch.
08:37Nice.
08:39Again.
08:41Nice.
08:42A back-handed slap to the groin.
08:45What that's going to do is give me a distraction technique long enough to insert for my final
08:50part of my throw.
08:52Starts again.
08:54Strike.
08:55From the strike of the groin, I'm in a perfect position to go under him to lift.
09:05Again.
09:07Strike and pull.
09:09Under.
09:11And throwing him into position on his back for the throw.
09:16From this side here, slow motion.
09:21The strike.
09:23Right hand hits groin.
09:25Distracts him long enough so I can go under.
09:29Lifting.
09:32And the throw.
09:34Full power.

10:01Asp!
10:01Asp!
10:02Asp!

10:03Asp!
10:04Asp!
10:04Asp!
10:04Asp!
10:05Asp!
10:18This is what's up.
10:50In this technique, Sean's going to be doing a running two-handed push again.
10:57Now what I'm doing, I'm going to grab and pull him with two hands.
11:03Now that alone can throw him if I do it quick enough.
11:10That could be a technique by itself.
11:12In this position here, we'll come back to this side, so you can see the foot.
11:17My left leg now will be blocking his right ankle, his shin.
11:22As he comes in, we try to hold, hold, hold that for him.
11:31Concentrating on keeping my leg straight and stiff and moving out of the way.
11:36Moving out of the way so he trips over the leg.
11:41Now if you notice when we put them together, it's critical, again, as he pushes, I pull.
11:49And if he pushes, I pull and block at the same time.
11:56Full power.
12:06Full power this side.
12:10One more on this side.
12:14This side.
12:30This side.
12:45What is this?
13:13And this technique here, when Sean comes in to do a chest push one-handed, you're going
13:18to notice that I'm probably going to do the most probably Aikido type of flowing technique
13:23that we've done so far.
13:25All styles are good.
13:26There's nothing wrong with any other style.
13:28What we've done, we've tried to combine the best, the most effective that we can do.
13:32It's the person performing the style that counts.
13:34All styles are good.
13:36He's going to come in with a chest push.
13:38I'm going to lead Sean through that chest push, continuing now a larger circle, more momentum,
13:47less chance of Sean to be able to defend against that.
13:51I'm going to do a stronger torque in my body, actually race him.
13:57What we teach, especially against anybody ever pushing or pulling at you, if he comes
14:04at five miles an hour, I run at 10 miles an hour.
14:10I want to be ahead of him.
14:12It's like a car going out of control.
14:14He comes to push.
14:16I pull.
14:18Now, when I reverse the direction, this wrist can snap in midair before he's even thrown
14:25to the ground.
14:26If the technique is done right, the action in the body weight cannot reverse it as fast
14:31as I can.
14:34So if you notice, then we'll take it from the other side.
14:36I pull, and I'm going to reverse.
14:40From this side, coming back this way.
14:43I pull.
14:45I reverse.
14:46I reverse.
14:48Full power.
14:50Here you see.
14:53Other side.
14:58Here you see.
15:01Here you see.
15:08All right.
15:08Go, everybody.
15:09Good!
15:09Go, everybody.
15:20Other side.
15:23Other side.
15:25Other side.
15:27Other side.
15:47Other side.
16:11Other side.
16:15Other side.
16:32And this technique Sean is going to be coming up with a two-handed choke.
16:36In this position here, what we teach is this.
16:39When a person is grabbing you with his hands, his weapons are tied up.
16:45You can always strike, strike, rake, punch, knee.
16:54Those are your options for a quick release.
16:57What we're doing here, his weapons are tied.
17:00I'm going to step back and actually peel the hands off at that point.
17:05He grabs.
17:06I grab his wrist.
17:09I'm going to turn Sean's body in a motion like this and crisscross his arms.
17:18He's going to grab.
17:21I take the wrist off.
17:23I step forward with the right leg and insert my right hip underneath his center of gravity.
17:29He grabs.
17:33Pull.
17:34Hip.
17:37Over.
17:38Over.
17:39This side.
17:41Two-handed choke.
17:44Pull.
17:46Hip.
17:51Full power.
17:55Here, yes, sit, Hey Hey Hey Hey Hey Hey Hey.
18:05Police.
18:07unterwegs
18:10Oh, my God.
18:47Yes, yes, yes.
18:54Yes, yes.
19:16Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
19:37Okay, in this technique, Sean's going to be doing a running straight punch.
19:42What I'm going to be doing here, we're going to be going back to the trapping hands.
19:47Putt, brush, hold.
19:49Now, instead of a strike at this point, I'm going to lead him.
19:55My left hand goes to the back of his neck.
20:01Again, his momentum is going forward.
20:05So what we have here, we have a trapping hand technique using the Filipino arts.
20:10We have an aikido type of principle of leading him and reversing the direction with a clothesline.
20:17Slow motion.
20:26This side.
20:36Now, if you see, trap hand, body out of the way, leading the head.
20:42And you have to have a strong pull with the neck.
20:45Without that, you won't get the misdirection for the clothesline.
20:49Full power?
20:53Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
21:00Yes, yes, yes, yes.
21:18Yes, yes, yes, yes.
21:25Yes, yes, yes, yes.
21:44Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
22:08Yes, yes, yes.
22:15Yes, yes, yes.
22:27Okay, in this particular technique here, Sean's going to be throwing a right-handed
22:30hook punch again.
22:31Now, the difference at this point is that you're going to notice that instead of blocking
22:36and pulling with one arm, I'm going to be grabbing with two arms now.
22:42Two-arm pull.
22:45During that two-arm pull, my body will shift and I'm going to take Sean just over the hip
22:51at that point.
22:54As the punch comes in, in the hip.
22:58And when it's done quickly, I'll pull him actually to me at a greater speed so his body will be
23:04lined up in such a way that he'll just kind of like a focal point will go over quickly.
23:09So in slow motion.
23:14Other side.
23:16You can see from here, the right hip against his right hip.
23:23Full power.
23:25Bisa!
23:30Bisa!
23:49Bisa!
23:53Bisa!
23:59Bisa!
24:13Bisa!
24:16Bisa!
24:23Bisa!
24:38Bisa!
24:40Bisa!
24:45Bisa!
24:47Bisa!
24:57Bisa!
25:10Bisa!
25:22Bisa!
25:23Bisa!
25:23Bisa!
25:23Bisa!
25:24Bisa!
25:26Bisa!
25:29Bisa!
25:35Bisa!
25:37Bisa!
25:39Bisa!
25:39Bisa!
25:40Bisa!
25:41leg goes between his two legs and he's thrown on his back.
25:49This angle.
25:51If you watch the left leg go between his, he comes in for the tackle, I'm grabbed, left
25:58leg inserts as I go down with Sean for the throw.
26:05Full power, full speed at the side.
26:08Eyes out!
26:15Eyes out!
26:47I
27:00Oh, yes, sir.
27:06Oh, yes, sir.
27:25Oh, yes, sir.
27:32Oh, yes, sir.
27:33Oh, yes, sir.
27:34Oh, yes, sir.
27:46With this technique here, Sean's going to be throwing another right-handed hook punch.
27:50Our last throw, I came in with two hands and threw them off the hip.
27:55This one here, I'm going to grab, continue the circle.
28:02Over, could have an elbow break, and the throw.
28:09Again, if you watch, the big point to remember is I'm making a circle.
28:13I'm continuing Sean's power here.
28:17I'm taking it around, up, over, possible elbow break.
28:25One more time, slow.
28:27This angle, you want to try it from this side so you can see it or not?
28:31Punch comes in.
28:33I grab.
28:34Continue the circle.
28:37Over for the throw.
28:37Fall.
28:39Full power.
28:41This is the first sight.
28:46Yes, sir.
28:48Yes, sir.
28:58Yes, sir.
29:20Yes, sir.
29:21Yes, sir.
29:23Yes, sir.
29:28Yes, sir.
29:30Yes, sir.
29:32Yes, sir.
30:51And this particular technique here, Sean's going to be throwing two punches, one with
30:55his right arm, one with his left arm, at this point here, I kneel, I keep, now remember
31:03I blocked right, left, left back at hand goes against his left shin, and my pull continues
31:11here.
31:12So it goes one black, two black, lift and pull for the throw.
31:23Again, slow motion, right hand ridge, ridge hand black, against the forearm, left hand
31:33black to the ankle, at this point here, ankle and pull.
31:41Continue it, over for the throw.
31:47Full speed.
31:51Please.
31:53I used to say.
31:57Please.
31:59I used to say.
32:03Please.
32:16I used to say.
32:19I used to say.
32:26I used to say.
32:28I used to say.
32:30I used to say.
32:47I used to say.
32:52I used to say.
32:54I used to say.
32:58I used to say.
33:00I used to say.
33:14I used to say.
33:33In this technique, Sean's going to be coming up to grab on the lapel with his left hand.
33:38Prior to him throwing the punch with his right, I'm going to step back in a horse type of position.
33:44Now, you notice the strength. This position here, if you're facing a horse position, you're weak from this position.
33:54But a horse position going sideways is very strong.
33:59So when I step back, as Sean grabs on the lapel, I'm going to grab his wrist, striking the forearm,
34:08taking him down on his back.
34:11At this point, you have your controlling technique with your wrist.
34:18Watching again, slow motion. He grabs before you see something coming.
34:23You're stepping back, striking the forearm to the throw.
34:29When it's done in fast motion, you see the sequence.
34:36Other side.
34:53Other side.
34:56Other side.
35:02Other side.
35:17Other side.
35:21Other side.
35:26Other side.
35:29Other side.
35:45Other side.
35:46Other side.
35:56Other side.
36:00Other side.
36:12And this technique here, Sean's going to be doing a double hand lapel grab versus the last one, which was
36:17a single.
36:17And the double lapel grab, I'm going to take his left elbow, pull strongly with my left hand.
36:24From here.
36:26Pull strong.
36:28My fingers go underneath the nostril with a push and pull.
36:33Goes in for the throw.
36:35From this angle.
36:38Two-handed lapel grab.
36:41Pulling across the body, which makes his feet start to come this way.
36:45Pain compliance on the nostrils.
36:49To the takedown.
36:53Now remember the adage with this is to try to do this quick.
36:58Push and pull.
36:59Feet cannot catch up.
37:01The higher his feet will go once they do this together.
37:04He grabs.
37:04Full power.
37:11Take off.
37:14Take off.
37:24Take off.
37:31Take your face.
37:51Take your face.
38:22In this technique, we're going back to Sean coming in with a hip throw.
38:28When he comes in with a major hip throw, Ogoshi, what I'm going to do with this is as he
38:33comes in, I must meet him with my hip in order to raise him.
38:37The higher I get him up in the air, the easier it is for me to throw him right down
38:40on his
38:40back.
38:41So if you watch how I enter, first you'll see how the hips meet on the hip.
38:47Now you'll see the lift.
38:52Lift one more time.
38:57Now we'll try the throw.
38:59When I get him to that height, he goes down on his back.
39:10Push it.
39:13Push it.
39:13Push it.
39:14Push it.
39:30Push it.
39:40Push it.
39:42Push it.
40:07Push it.
40:26Push it.
40:35Push it.
40:37Push it.
40:37Push it.
40:53Push it.
40:56Bend the hip.
40:56Day the hip.
40:56And then lift.
40:57Now you have to remember to come in low and bend the knees, so I can lift.
41:04Instead of dropping him straight on his back.
41:06if you remember one of our previous techniques against the hip throw when I
41:10came here and beat his throw with my own same throw what I'm going to do now is
41:16switch on him I will lift him as he comes in in the midair I will switch and
41:23throw him on the same throw do a full-out
41:36yeah
41:37yeah
41:37yeah
42:29You
42:46There
42:47There
42:48Here
42:54Here
42:55Here
42:56Here
42:56Here
42:56Here
43:07And this technique here now, Sean won't be coming in with a grab, he's not going to be
43:11coming in with a hip throw, he's going to try to do a front kick with his right leg
43:16at me.
43:16When he comes in with a front kick, standard stuff is to block or to move away from it
43:22this way.
43:23What we're going to do to keeping our theme of the tape is a takedown type atmosphere.
43:27What I'm going to do again, if you remember, the body shifting is very, very important.
43:31I'm going to take his leg and continue the arc of his leg.
43:34So if I move quickly enough with the hand to take this up, the person cannot be able to
43:40catch that in time, put his foot down, he will continue to his back.
43:44So when he comes in, we'll do this slow up.
43:49The other side, you can see how he, left hand against the right leg, up, full power in the
43:57side.
44:01the other side, you can see how he, left hand against the right leg, up, full power in
44:21the right leg, up, full power in the right leg, up, full power in the right leg.
44:31the other side, you can see how he, left hand against the right leg, up, full power in the
44:53right leg, up, full power in the right leg.
44:58The other side, you can see how he, left hand against the right leg, up, full power in the
45:27In this technique, Sean's going to be throwing another rear leg front kick, or side kick.
45:34Notice how he did this.
45:35I push block with the left hand, continue to block with the right.
45:40If you notice, left hand first, then right.
45:43It's done quickly.
45:47Now what I'm going to do here, as I block, I go inside.
45:53His momentum's coming forward.
45:54I'm going to match the momentum and reverse his chi, his key, his forward momentum.
46:02Slowly, block, and drive.
46:08Full speed.
46:11As you can see from this angle.
46:18As you can see from this angle.
46:20As you can see from this angle.
46:34As you can see from this angle.
46:59As you can see from this angle.
47:35In this technique, Sean's going to be coming in with a grab, followed by a right hand hook
47:39punch again.
47:40Now what we're going to do here, you've seen all the different types of things we can.
47:44We try to hit the very broad range of techniques for you to choose from.
47:49Sometimes you're going to throw them.
47:49Sometimes you're going to block and throw, whatever.
47:51Our final thing we have to do is that your assailant must be on his back and you have
47:54to go home.
47:55He's going to be grabbing me.
47:57I'm going to block just inside the top of the shoulders, his deltroid, stopping that punch
48:07so it can't reach me any further here versus this kind of a punch block or this block.
48:12I'm just going to insert the thumb, first finger and meet it.
48:17Okay?
48:18So in this technique here, he's going to grab.
48:21I meet the block or I meet the strike at this point.
48:24Now what I'm going to do, I'm going to sacrifice my body, torquing to my left.
48:28This side of the camera here, you'll see this end and we'll switch it for this side on this
48:32side.
48:32What we're going to do here again, he grabs, I block, I throw.
48:42This side.
48:43He grabs, I block, I throw.
48:50Full power and shall I let you go?
48:515?
48:556.
48:56Yes.
48:57Yes.

50:23Ah!
50:27Ah!
50:42And this technique here, Sean is going to come behind, tackle technique.
50:45What I'm going to do here, again, the power of the horse stance.
50:48If you notice when I'm going to step out, when he grabs, I go immediately into a horse
50:52stance.
50:53I take the knuckles of both hands, smashing the top of the bones on top of his hand here.
50:57Small bones, they break easily, they're causing a lot of pain.
51:01He grabs, horse, smack, smack.
51:04Elbow strikes down on both sides of his elbows, stepping out, pain compliance.
51:13Elbow strike, elbow strike.
51:17Under the neck, up, over.
51:24Again slow motion.
51:26He grabs me from behind.
51:29One, two.
51:31Elbows.
51:32Turn, hand up high in a pain compliance position.
51:38Elbow strike, elbow strike.
51:42Switching under him.
51:43Under his neck, throw.
51:47All right.
51:47All right.
51:48All right.
51:53All right.
51:55All right.
52:17We're off.
52:39All right.
52:41That's it.
54:31I hope you enjoyed this tape and you will continue with the rest of the series.
54:34Remember, it's always too soon to quit.
54:36I want to give special thanks to my assistant, Sean Curran, and especially Panther Productions
54:41for the opportunity of being on with their company.
54:45What attracted me to most of the martial arts was probably the physical attraction of staying
54:50in shape.
54:51I always wanted to be into the health type of curriculum.
54:54And then after I was in it, of course, then I learned the whole scope of the program.
54:58What makes a good student to me is someone who has that drive, the will, to get knocked
55:03down seven times and get up eight and that they have to go after their highest potentials
55:08and reach it.
55:10A good instructor is somebody that I think draws out of the student the student's potential
55:15to excel.
55:16The training series on Panther Productions have given me an opportunity to take my style to
55:20the public so they can take some basic self-defense techniques as well as advance and incorporate
55:25it into their martial arts systems.
55:27The Zen Sakai Goshen Jutsu system was basically formed when a police officer student of mine
55:32asked us to do a defensive tactics seminar for his police department.
55:36Upon doing that, it took root in that we noticed that men who were looking for in close, close-range
55:42type of situations, basically dealing with the weapons of the 90s, guns, knives, clubs,
55:48baseball bats, direct attacks, someone high on drugs, and the ability to incapacitate
55:53someone was really the conditioning of the program was for that reason.
55:58I see the future of the martial arts more than ever going back to basic self-defense so
56:04that people now with the crime rate the way it is, right now crime is the number one thing
56:08on anybody's mind, and there is a crime every two seconds in the United States, and I believe
56:13that now people, that is their priority.
56:15So now they're interested still in the Zen, they're interested still in the Doe, the Way,
56:20but they still want to stay traditional, which is great, but the bottom line now more than
56:25ever with sexual assaults against women and children in the United States, I think now
56:28it's, they must have the ability to defend themselves.
56:32My future goals is just to continue learning and being a teacher as well as a student.
56:37The person most responsible for the creation of my system was a person who encouraged me
56:41at the beginning when I was putting it together.
56:44Sometimes I questioned whether I was good enough to do it or whether I had enough technique
56:47to do it, his name is Jerry Bacillo, and Jerry is a very humble man who probably wouldn't
56:51want me to mention him, but I give credit to where it's due and I give thanks, and that's
56:55the man.
56:57My involvement with law enforcement started about 1987.
57:00We started teaching defensive tactics to police officers.
57:03It got to the point where it was not only enjoyable, but a great need for it.
57:08They have a couple weeks in the academy, they're never reviewed again, and chances are for
57:12police officers needing this on an everyday thing, especially with liability suits, it became critical
57:16and paramount that they knew how to do this in a structure that we're doing it now in Zen
57:19and my Zen Sakai system.
57:22One of the precepts of Ishma Karate, which is one of my traditional systems that we're
57:26trained in, unbalance is the same as weight, and I believe that you have to have that balance
57:30between your family and your career, and I believe that the balance that I've done with
57:33the physical end of my system is doing well, but without the love for my wife and my
57:37children, I know I could not have gotten to where I have now.
57:41My closing words for anybody, whether it's martial arts or whether it's life, your marriage,
57:45your job, it's always too soon to quit.
