00:27O Lord God, you chose Saint Luke to reveal the mystery of your love for the poor in his
00:33teaching and in his writings. Grant that those who already acknowledge your name may continue to be
00:41in one mind and heart and that all the nations may see your salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ
00:48your Son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit God forever and ever. Amen.
01:08Let us pray.
01:11Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who for our sake gave yourself up into the service of
01:19your parents
01:20and to teach us true humility carried by your mother into the temple and there redeemed with
01:28the offerings of the poor when the righteous Simeon and the prophetess Anna gladdened by your presence
01:34gave glorious witness concerning you. May the slightest breath of vanity never affect
01:40my innermost soul. May all arrogance be ever cast down. May all longing for the praise of men be
01:47extinguished. May all wantonness of self-conceit be quenched within me. Give me grace, O Lord, to flee
01:55any honour, to hate distinction, and to submit myself with readiness to all men for your sake.
02:03Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who as a little child did with your tender mother suffer
02:10persecution and did not refuse to be carried as an exile fleeing into Egypt. Give me grace amidst the
02:19storms of adversity and the blasts of persecution and misfortune to fly for refuge to you alone,
02:26to seek you, to call upon you. Grant that I may receive all things with gladness at your hands,
02:34may endure all things in meekness of heart, and may cleave with thanksgiving without wavering,
02:40to you. Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who when you remained behind in the temple,
02:49your mother sought for sorrowing, and at length with joy found you sitting in the midst of the
02:54doctors, hearing and asking them questions. May you so give and communicate yourself to me,
03:01that I may never be separated from you, and never be without the comfort of your blessed friendship.
03:08Drive sloth from my heart, dispel any dullness that is displeasing in your sight.
03:15Grant me perfect devotion and such an ardent thirst after piety, that my soul may be so affected
03:22and possessed by it, as never to feel satisfied with worshipping you.
03:28Praise, honour and glory be to you, who gave yourself up to live in concealment for thirty years,
03:36to be reputed by the Jews the son of Joseph the carpenter, and be subject to the commands of your
03:42mother and the same Joseph.
03:45May your grace, I beg you, root out and thoroughly pluck up from the innermost recesses of my heart
03:52any ambition and seeking of glory, that I may become belittled in my own eyes,
03:59and may love to be unknown and considered of no account,
04:03submitting myself to all and obeying them for your honour.
04:08Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who did not refuse to come to the River Jordan
04:14and be baptised there by your servant John.
04:19May you thoroughly cleanse me by your merits in this life,
04:24that freed from all vices and sins, I may be filled with the love of you
04:29and long for my heavenly country.
04:33Make me, I beg you, before my soul quits this body,
04:38pleasing to you in all things, that, departing from this life,
04:42I may be for ever in heaven with you,
04:45to see you, to enjoy you and to praise your holy name for ever and ever.
04:52Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
04:54who for our sake dwelt in the wilderness amongst the wild beasts
05:00and fasted and watched in prayer for forty days and forty nights,
05:05permitting yourself to be tempted by the devil,
05:07whom you overcame when angels came and ministered to you.
05:12Grant me grace to discipline, overcome and bring into subjection
05:17my sinful flesh with its evil affections.
05:23Give me grace to be instant in prayer and all other spiritual exercises
05:27and grant that with your continual help
05:31I may completely overcome sins of gluttony
05:34and may escape the snares and schemes of the devil.
05:40Let no temptations, I beg you, defile me
05:43nor separate me from you,
05:45but may they rather purify me
05:48and unite and join me with you.
05:51Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
05:55who gave himself up to preach repentance,
05:58to call to you disciples
06:00and from them choose the twelve apostles
06:02to be the special heralds of the faith,
06:06gathering together the children of God that were scattered abroad.
06:10Draw me after you
06:12and powerfully excite my heart to love you.
06:16Do not permit me to neglect the grace with which you called me,
06:20but make me ready to despise the world and all perishable things,
06:25following you, taking your humility and charity as my example.
06:30Give me grace to look for you alone
06:32and with earnest longing to sigh continually after you.
06:38Amen.
06:42O Lord, open our lips
06:44and our mouths shall sing your praise.
06:54O be joyful in the Lord,
06:59holy lands,
07:01serve the Lord with gladness
07:04and come in the Lord with gladness
07:09and to hear your song.
07:11He is sure that the Lord needs God.
07:17It is he that can bring us and trust me ourselves.
07:23We are his people and the sheep of his master.
07:29O Lord, he has!
07:32O Lord, go your way into his ancient history
07:36and in tune his cross with grace.
07:41Be thankful unto him and speak to the Lord of his name.
07:50O Lord, his mercy is everlasting.
07:58and his truth and joy from generation to generation.
08:13Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost,
08:24as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
08:42Amen.
09:14Amen.
09:44Amen.
09:54Amen.
10:17Amen.
10:28Amen.
10:50Amen.
11:20Amen.
11:23Amen.
11:24For he cometh to judge the earth, and with righteousness to judge the world, and the people when he's good.
11:42Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning,
11:55is now and ever shall be, and without anger. Amen.
12:19A reading from the Gospel according to Saint Luke, chapter 9.
12:26Now, ten days after these sayings, Jesus took with him Peter, John, and James, and went up the mountain to
12:33pray.
12:35As he prayed, the appearance of his face was transformed, and his clothes became bright, a filliant white.
12:44Then two men, Moses and Elijah, began talking with him.
12:48They appeared in glorious splendour, and spoke about his departure that he was about to carry out at Jerusalem.
12:57Now Peter and those with him were quite sneaky, but as they became fully awake, they saw his glory and
13:03the two men standing with them.
13:06Then, as the men were starting to leave, Peter said to Jesus,
13:10Master, Master, it is good for us to be here.
13:12Let us make three shelters, one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah, not knowing what he
13:18said.
13:20As he said this, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.
13:27Then a voice came from the cloud, saying,
13:30This is my Son, my Chosen One, listen to him.
13:35After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone.
13:40So they kept silent, and told no one at that time anything of what they had seen.
13:47The next day, when they had come down from the mountain, the great multitudes met them.
13:51And a man from the crowd called out, saying,
13:54Teacher, I beg you to look at my Son.
13:57He is my only child, and behold, a spirit takes him.
14:00He cries out, and it convulses him so that he foams, and it hardly departs from him,
14:07bruising him severely.
14:10I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.
14:16Jesus answered,
14:18Faithless and perverse generation,
14:20How long shall I be with you and bear with you?
14:23Bring your son here.
14:26And while he was still coming,
14:28the demon threw him down and convulsed him violently.
14:32But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit,
14:35healed the boy,
14:36and gave him back to his father.
14:40Then they were all astonished
14:42at the mighty power of God.
14:44But while the entire crowd
14:46was amazed at everything Jesus was doing,
14:48he said to his disciples,
14:51Take these words to heart,
14:53or the Son of Man
14:54is going to be betrayed into the hands of men.
14:59But they did not understand this statement.
15:02Its meaning had been concealed from them,
15:04so that they could not grasp it.
15:06Yet they were afraid to ask him
15:08about this statement.
15:12The crowd was astonished
15:14at the power of Jesus.
15:16He had just cast out a demon in front of them,
15:18with an authority and a power
15:20the like of which they had never seen before.
15:24Who was this man?
15:25They were dumbfounded.
15:28Note,
15:29the gospel does not say they believed,
15:31merely that they were amazed.
15:36Not yet,
15:36there would be some in the crowd
15:37who would come to believe,
15:39but there would also be several times as many
15:41who would marvel at what they had seen and heard,
15:45considered it a good act,
15:46and then gone home,
15:47as if nothing had happened.
15:51An argument started out amongst the disciples,
15:54as to which of them might be the greatest.
15:58When Jesus discerped them in the most thoughts,
16:01he took a child and had him stand at his side
16:03and said to them,
16:05Whoever welcomes this child in my name,
16:07welcomes me.
16:09And whoever welcomes me,
16:10welcomes the one who sent me.
16:12For the one who is least among you
16:14is also the one who is the greatest.
16:19John answered,
16:20Master,
16:21we saw someone casting out demons in your name
16:24and we tried to stop him,
16:25because he is not a disciple with us.
16:29But Jesus said to him,
16:31Do not stop him,
16:33for whoever is not against you is for you.
16:40This is the word of the Lord.
16:43Thanks be to God.
16:53In St. Mark's Gospel,
16:54chapter 9, verse 2,
16:57we read that this encounter took six days
16:59after Jesus began to warn the disciples
17:01of what was going to happen
17:03and by implication
17:04to all those who followed him.
17:09This apparent inconsistency
17:11can be accounted for
17:12by the different ways
17:14we could count elapsed time.
17:18For example,
17:19we could ask how many days later
17:21is Thursday compared with Sunday.
17:24If we include Sunday,
17:26we have five days.
17:28If we count the intervening days,
17:31we have three days.
17:33So let us not get too exercised
17:35by the apparent inconsistency.
17:38The important thing is that it happened
17:40rather than the precise time of the happening.
17:45In taking Peter, James and John
17:46up the mountain
17:47for a special encounter,
17:50Jesus allowed these three disciples
17:53a glimpse of what was to come,
17:56perhaps as much for their comfort
17:57and reassurance as for their education.
18:01It is worth noting that Jesus
18:03did not take all the disciples
18:04of the mountain,
18:05but just a mere quarter of them
18:07and sufficient
18:09to give witness in due course
18:11as to exactly what had happened.
18:14In the same way,
18:15Jesus reveals to all his faithful
18:17different heavenly truths
18:18depending on their needs.
18:20It is not for us to know
18:22all the secrets of heaven,
18:24for we would be incapable
18:25of coping with the knowledge.
18:28Likewise,
18:29it is wrong for us
18:30to engage in speculation
18:31as to what these truths might be.
18:35It should be sufficient for us
18:36to accept Jesus as he is
18:38and to trust him,
18:40leaving it to him
18:41to decide what we are to receive
18:43as our education
18:44in his ways.
18:48Verse 29
18:49tells us that the clothes of Jesus
18:51became brilliant white.
18:54The use of language here
18:56suggests that this was a gradual
18:57rather than a sudden process
18:59so that the disciples
19:02would have been under no doubt
19:03that it was still teacher,
19:05still Jesus,
19:07their friend and teacher,
19:08who was in front of them.
19:12It also gives us a glimpse
19:13of the purity of heaven,
19:15for Jesus was shown
19:16to be completely pure
19:17and without blemish.
19:20His clothes whiter and brighter
19:22than any amount of bleach
19:23or worldly detergent
19:25could make them.
19:28Such was the intensity
19:29of the experience
19:31and the deep fear
19:32felt by the disciples
19:34that Jesus was obliged
19:37to comfort them further
19:38by laying his hands
19:39on them and blessing them.
19:42Certainly,
19:43this would have been
19:44a truly terrifying experience
19:45for them
19:47to be shown even
19:48for just a few brief moments
19:50something so very different,
19:53so unexpected
19:53and out of this world,
19:55as we might put it.
19:57Not surprisingly,
19:59they were told
19:59to keep quiet
20:00about what had happened
20:01and what they had seen
20:02and heard
20:03until they knew
20:04the time had come
20:05to speak openly about it.
20:09More than once
20:10in the history of war,
20:12there has occurred
20:13an incident as such
20:14as is related
20:15concerning a great struggle
20:17in the civil war
20:18in the United States.
20:22A severe and successful attack
20:24was made
20:25by one army
20:26on the other.
20:27The enemy was driven back,
20:28his guns and camp captured.
20:30His regiments
20:31are in full retreat.
20:34The general
20:35of the defeated force,
20:36who had been
20:37unfortunately absent,
20:38arrived on the scene.
20:40He stopped
20:41the tide of retreat,
20:42gathered his soldiers
20:43about him,
20:44stopped the pursuing
20:45host in their career
20:47and led a triumphant
20:48counter-attack upon them,
20:50driving them beyond
20:51his own camp,
20:53recapturing his guns
20:54and chases
20:56the once conquering
20:57but now defeated army
20:59for miles
21:00to the rear
21:01of its first position.
21:04Such a victory,
21:06snatched from the jaws
21:07of humbling defeat,
21:08took place
21:09on this occasion.
21:11The returning saviour
21:12found his disciples
21:13driven before
21:15the hostile attack
21:15of his enemies,
21:17but his presence
21:18soon availed
21:19to restore the day
21:21and before long
21:22transformed humiliating
21:24failure
21:24into joyous triumph.
21:28In the master's
21:29actual spiritual absence,
21:31the cause of the church
21:32may be brought
21:33very low indeed.
21:36A complete and crushing
21:38disaster
21:38may impend.
21:41And let the Lord
21:42return,
21:43let his presence
21:44and his power
21:44be felt
21:45and from the very teeth
21:46of threatened calamity
21:49there shall be secured
21:51a glorious victory.
21:54Let no heart
21:55despond for so long
21:56as there is
21:58a present captain.
21:59Failure is never
22:00irretrievable
22:01when he is on the field.
22:03Under his leadership
22:04even death
22:05is swallowed up
22:06in victory.
22:11It was his son's
22:12sickness
22:12that led this man
22:14to seek Jesus,
22:15but for that
22:16he would not have
22:16sought and found him.
22:18It was his strong
22:19parental love
22:20that would not be denied,
22:22that led him
22:22to urge his blame,
22:24that enabled him
22:24to overcome his fear
22:26and gain that
22:27valuable victory.
22:30God deploys
22:31many instruments
22:32to lead his children
22:33into his kingdom.
22:36We ought to be
22:37influenced
22:37by our sense
22:38of what is right
22:39and of what is wise
22:41in the matter.
22:42But if not won
22:43by these,
22:44let the consideration
22:45of the deep
22:46and tender interests
22:47of those who are
22:48dear to us
22:49convince and
22:50determine us.
22:52For the sake
22:53of these children
22:53of ours
22:54whom we love
22:55so profoundly
22:56and who have
22:57such a vital interest
22:58in Christian truth,
23:00let us sit
23:01at the feet of Christ
23:02and be subject
23:03to his will.
23:07There could not
23:08well be
23:09a worse case
23:10of possession
23:11than this.
23:12If the malignant forces
23:13could have triumphed
23:14over the benevolent spirit,
23:16they would have triumphed
23:17over everything.
23:19But everything
23:20was accomplished
23:21when Jesus
23:22took him by the hand.
23:24So it was
23:25with the worst
23:26spiritual malady.
23:28They may seem
23:29so bad
23:30as to be incurable.
23:31It may be
23:32the general opinion
23:33that the case
23:34is hopeless.
23:35But there is
23:36a power in reserve
23:37against which
23:38the most virulent
23:39and the most violent
23:40evils
23:40are unable to stand.
23:44The most stricken
23:45souls
23:46will be healed.
23:47The most sorrowed
23:48ones comforted.
23:49The most despondent
23:50filled with new
23:51and blessed food.
23:52The most fallen
23:53and sunk into sin
23:54lifted up
23:55into purity
23:56and even
23:57to beauty
23:58and debility
23:59of spirit
24:00and life.
24:01When the divine
24:02voice is heard
24:03bidding to be comforted.
24:04When the divine
24:05hand is laid
24:06on the broken heart
24:07or the defiled
24:08and guilty soul.
24:12this father
24:13had much
24:14to overcome.
24:15The natural
24:16reluctance
24:16he would have
24:17had to bring
24:18the poor
24:18demoniac
24:19into such
24:20publicity.
24:22the failure
24:23of the disciples
24:24to cure
24:24as well calculated
24:26as was to
24:27discourage
24:28and dishearten
24:28his own
24:30imperfect faith.
24:31But he overcame
24:33all these obstacles
24:34and gained his plea.
24:36Many may be
24:37the obstacles
24:37in the way
24:38of our salvation.
24:39They may be
24:40circumstantial.
24:41They may be
24:41inward
24:44and spiritual.
24:47But if there be
24:48a thoroughly
24:49earnest spirit
24:50they will not
24:51prevail over us
24:52and we shall
24:53triumph over them
24:55and we will
24:56go on our way
24:56with our cause
24:57gained in our
24:58hearts laden.
25:02While the crowd
25:03contemplated
25:04what they had
25:04just seen
25:05Jesus took
25:06his disciples
25:07to one side
25:08and had a word
25:09with them quietly.
25:11He told them
25:12of his betrayal
25:12to the authorities
25:13and called on them
25:15to remember
25:16all that was
25:17being said
25:18and done by him.
25:19The implication
25:20being that they
25:22should recount
25:22these events
25:23when he was
25:24no longer
25:24with them.
25:26Note that he
25:27did not say here
25:28that he would
25:29be betrayed
25:29by one of them.
25:31Merely that he
25:32would be betrayed.
25:34The story
25:35surrounding the
25:36betrayal by Judas
25:37is long and
25:37complicated
25:38but something
25:39that we will
25:40come back to
25:40on another
25:41occasion.
25:45We also read
25:46that the
25:46meaning of
25:46what Jesus
25:47had said
25:47was hidden
25:48from them
25:48by the
25:49Holy Spirit.
25:51Why?
25:52For surely
25:53Jesus wanted
25:53them to
25:54understand.
25:56Indeed but
25:56not right there
25:57for if they
25:58truly understood
25:59they would have
26:00tried hard to
26:01avoid it happening
26:02and there would
26:03have been a
26:04possibility that
26:04the betrayal
26:05would not have
26:06taken place.
26:08We must remember
26:09that Jesus came
26:10for a very specific
26:11reason with a
26:12very specific
26:13path to tread
26:14that was going
26:15to lead right
26:16to the cross.
26:18Right up until
26:19the last evening
26:19he spent with
26:20his disciples.
26:21He was vague
26:22and mysterious
26:23on the subject
26:24but the teaching
26:26he gave them
26:27would ring clearly
26:29in their minds
26:29after he had
26:30left them
26:31and the meaning
26:32would be as
26:33clear as crystal.
26:36So let us
26:37return to the
26:38cred and ask
26:38ourselves a
26:39simple question.
26:40Do we really
26:41find Jesus
26:42interesting?
26:43A spectacle to
26:44brighten the
26:45darkness of the
26:46world around us?
26:47Or does he
26:48fire our hearts
26:48with love and
26:49a passion to
26:50do his will
26:50here on earth?
26:52Are we motivated
26:53by his love for
26:54us or merely
26:55fascinated by it?
26:58Human nature
26:59is after all
27:01human nature
27:01and it would
27:02seem that
27:02disciples were
27:03trying to decide
27:04which of them
27:04would be the
27:05boss.
27:06Note however
27:07that Jesus
27:09could read their
27:09thoughts however
27:10hard they might
27:11have tried to
27:11hide them from
27:12him.
27:14We read
27:16that he read
27:17their innermost
27:18thoughts.
27:19In other words
27:20he understood
27:21what they were
27:21thinking and
27:23their motives
27:23for thinking
27:24that way.
27:26The answer
27:27of course would
27:28take them by
27:28surprise for
27:29Jesus told them
27:30that this little
27:31child would be
27:32the greatest of
27:32them.
27:33That the
27:34smallest will be
27:34the biggest and
27:35the biggest the
27:36smallest.
27:37How can this
27:37be?
27:39Simply
27:39those who
27:40know they
27:41have nothing
27:41and know
27:42little are
27:43hungry for
27:43hope and
27:44knowledge.
27:45They will
27:45embrace the
27:46love of
27:46Christ wholeheartedly
27:47and place all
27:48their trust in
27:49him.
27:51On the other
27:51hand those who
27:53have plenty and
27:53think they know
27:54it all place
27:55their trust not
27:56in Christ but
27:57in their own
27:57efforts and
27:58ability thereby
27:59depriving
28:00themselves of
28:03real knowledge
28:03and the
28:04lasting riches.
28:10The reading
28:11concludes with
28:12an interesting
28:13interlude where
28:15John brings to
28:15the attention of
28:16Jesus someone
28:17who had been
28:18casting out
28:18demons in his
28:19name.
28:22Jesus explained
28:23simply that if
28:24the demons were
28:25genuinely being
28:26driven out using
28:27the name of
28:28Jesus then the
28:29man should not
28:30be stopped as
28:31he was clearly on
28:32the same side as
28:33they were.
28:36there would come
28:37a time when
28:38the disciples and
28:39their successors
28:40would themselves
28:41be driving out
28:42demons in
28:43his name.
29:03we praise you
29:05O God, may I choose to be our Lord.
29:12All ye now, Christ's people of heaven I have seen.
29:20Till all angels cry out, and all of our journey.
29:27Till all angels cry, O God, may I choose to be our Lord.
29:44Till all angels cry, O God, may I choose to be our Lord.
29:51Till all angels cry, O God, may I choose to be our Lord.
30:02Till all angels cry, O God, may I choose to be our Lord.
30:10Till all angels cry, O God, may I choose to be our Lord.
30:16Till all angels cry, O God, may I choose to be our Lord.
30:19The heart of heaven has seen the rose to the heavenly Son, also the holy rose the comfort of earth.
30:34You are the glory, O Christ, you are the everlasting Son of the Father.
30:45When you took on yourself to be there again, you humbled yourself to be born of a virgin.
31:00When you took on yourself to be there again, you humbled yourself to be born of a virgin.
31:11You stand right and above in the glory of the Father.
31:22We believe that you will come to be our God.
31:33Therefore, may you come, your servants, for you have healed in your precious blood.
31:45May there be a birth in your saints in glory everlasting.
32:04Amen.
32:06Amen.
32:08Amen.
32:12Amen.
32:16Amen.
32:17Amen.
32:32Amen.
32:33Have mercy upon us.
32:39O Lord, let your mercy upon us
32:43as our trust is in you.
32:47O Lord, if you have had just faith
32:51that we never be confronted.
33:05Almighty God, who called Luke the physician
33:08whose praise is in the gospel
33:10to be an evangelist and physician of the soul,
33:15may it please you that by the wholesome medicine
33:18of the doctrine delivered by him
33:20all the diseases of our souls may be healed.
33:24Through the merit of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
33:28Amen.
33:34May the Lord bless us and keep us from all evil
33:38bringing us to everlasting life.
33:42Amen.
