00:02The Moon Hero One Nation has been jubilant for when polls have closed and the party is
00:08continuing well into the evening.
00:10The party had been optimistic about their chances down here from the outset, confident
00:15that they would be able to unseat Labor in their heartland and that is what it looks
00:20like they have done.
00:26Labor has held this area for decades.
00:29At the last state election, just over a year ago, they held it on a margin of nearly 12%
00:35for the retirement of a veteran MP in an outer suburban seat.
00:39As one nation grows in popularity, it was always going to be a struggle.
00:43As some in the party were describing it, one of the worst possible seats at the worst possible time.
00:49The minor party's ability to tap into the frustration in this area, a rapidly growing area.
00:56Lots of new housing developments amidst of young families and older Western Australians
01:01appears to have been key to their success.
01:03That means that gym owner Luke Hurtigin, who only moved to WA about three years ago, is now the party's
01:11newest lower house MP.
01:13Their first lower house MPs in Western Australia.
01:16But the people have spoken today.
01:20The people of Secret Harbour have sent a message.
01:26A message that will send shockwaves across the entire country.
01:37And put every MP in this entire country on notice.
01:48Over at Labor's event, the mood was much more subdued all night.
01:52They always knew that holding onto this seat would be a challenge.
01:56But there had been some hope that maybe they would be able to find a way to get over the
02:01line.
02:01But a bumpy campaign did not help Labor's candidate, Georgia Tree.
02:06A former political staffer turned Woodside lobbyist.
02:09In holding this seat in a campaign that Labor says they've spent somewhere around $400,000 on.
02:16The result was close and she didn't concede at her event.
02:20Clearly this is going to be a tough night for Labor.
02:23We already said this campaign was going to be a fight.
02:26And it has been a fight.
02:28And the voters of Secret Harbour have spoken.
02:30And regardless of their outcome tonight, we will listen.
02:35This campaign has been a reminder that Western Australians are doing it tough.
02:40There will be lots of analysis to come about what this means for one nation.
02:44Both here in the West and around the rest of the country.
02:47With elections coming up in Victoria and New South Wales.
02:50There are warnings to be taken here about how voters who are frustrated with the major parties will vote.
02:56And how they will direct their preferences.
02:59But it's important to remember this is a by-election which won't change the government.
03:04And in which Labor has promised to deliver all of the commitments they made during the campaign.
03:08That can change how people vote.
03:10And mean that this kind of result wouldn't necessarily be replicated.
03:14Particularly with a state election not due until 2029.
03:18Nonetheless though, this will be seen as a major boost for one nation.
03:23Energising its supporters and perhaps attracting new ones.
03:27Their test is whether they can hold on to that momentum and leverage it at future elections.
03:33Particularly when both Labor and the Liberals will have learnt a lot in this campaign about how to tackle one
03:39nation.
03:39And will no doubt be putting that to use in future contests.
