00:02On paper, this by-election shouldn't be really interesting. It's the race to replace a retiring
00:07Labor MP in a seat with a 12% margin in an area that Labor has held for decades. The
00:14difference
00:14this time is One Nation. The party has been surging in the polls on the East Coast and to a
00:19lesser extent here in the West. If they're to translate that seeming popularity into a seat in
00:26parliament anywhere in WA, Sacred Harbour would be pretty close to the top of that list. It takes
00:32in Perth's outer southern suburbs with a growing population of young families moving into new
00:37housing developments. Unsurprisingly, the cost of living and housing are two key concerns in the
00:43electorate which the government acknowledges are on voters' minds. And that's one of the reasons why
00:48we've put such a strong emphasis on our key issues of jobs, health and housing and helping people with
00:55the cost of living pressures and we'll continue to do that. Labor's also had a strong emphasis on
01:00One Nation, describing this as the fight of their lives. The Liberals are contesting as well but are
01:06running a much smaller campaign, something which Federal Liberal MP Andrew Hastie, whose seat overlaps
01:12with Sacred Harbour, has been critical of. But after a decade in the political wilderness here in the
01:17West, no one really believes the Liberals are serious contenders. One Nation, on the other hand,
01:23are much more optimistic. I'm not going to try to claim definitely we're going to win it but
01:28it's very positive on the ground here. People are telling us they definitely want the change.
01:33This is the first time Labor and One Nation will be going head-to-head in a by-election this
01:38year and
01:38people can vote differently in by-elections, particularly where the government won't change,
01:43perhaps feeling more free to cast a protest vote or one which will send a message to the government.
01:49But even still, this ballot is being watched closely as a sign of just how much support
01:54One Nation can take off Labor in their heartland and how both Labor and the Liberals will need
01:59to adapt their future campaigns to account for that.
