00:00Hi there.
00:01We've been talking about high pressure for weeks and weeks this summer, but for the start
00:06of the August bank holiday weekend, it's all about the low pressure.
00:10This low, a hybrid summer-autumn kind of low with organised rain associated with weather
00:16fronts but also some lively showers and thunderstorms developing in its wake.
00:21And it's across Wales in the southwest where it starts off wet and windy with gusts at
00:26close to 50 miles an hour for exposed headlands of the southwest, heavy rain moving through.
00:31That pushes across much of England and Wales through the morning, early afternoon, fringes
00:35upon parts of Northern Ireland, particularly Armagh and County Down, into the far south
00:39of Scotland.
00:40But for the rest of Scotland, actually mostly dry and bright, one or two showers, yes, but
00:45the first low that we saw at the end of the week, that's clearing away, leaving a gap between
00:51weather systems.
00:51So, it's a very unsettled day for England and Wales, mostly, where we do need the rain.
00:57But these kinds of rain rates can cause issues, as we've seen in the last few days, the risk
01:02of thunderstorms in places, lightning, hail by later in the afternoon.
01:07Of course, with the gusty winds in the south, it's going to feel cool even as the brighter
01:13skies appear in between the downpours.
01:16Pleasant in Central and Southern Scotland, in between the rain bands and with lighter
01:21winds.
01:22Take some time across Northern England, Southern Scotland for the rain to clear.
01:26It will continue overnight and eventually, as we begin Sunday, another system pushes into
01:32parts of Central and Southern Scotland, Northern England, bringing some showery rain.
01:36A few showers, a lot of cloud elsewhere, and a mild night, if not warm in places, mid-teens
01:41across the board.
01:43Now, we begin Sunday, again, with a strong breeze in the south.
01:47It's not as strong as Saturday morning, but it does strengthen through the day, and another
01:52low turns up.
01:54You can see the spiralling winds here, sending bands of showery rain in for Sunday afternoon.
02:00Sunday afternoon is going to be particularly lively, initially in the west and then eventually
02:04across much of the UK as these lively showers move through.
02:09Once more, lightning, hail, gusty winds, and some very heavy rain in places, more than 50
02:16millimetres in a few hours for some spots, but as always, highly hit and miss.
02:21In between the showers, some brighter skies, but fleeting, and it's going to continue to
02:26feel cool as these winds towards the south-west pick up once again going into Sunday night.
02:32So, we've got those showers on Sunday, but they do ease a little by bank holiday Monday.
02:38Not a bank holiday for everyone, of course, but for those who have the day off, it's looking
02:42a little better for outdoor activities.
02:46Lots of showers to begin things, and then the showers most frequent through central and northern
02:50parts of the UK.
02:51In the south and towards the west as we go into the afternoon, drier, a little brighter,
02:56a bit less windy as well.
02:58So, yeah, there'll be some usable weather, as well as some useful rain, of course, for
03:04those who need it.
03:05Temperatures, though, still on the cool side, 20 to 21 Celsius.
03:09Now, this is the final day of meteorological summer, of course, and what a summer it has
03:13been likely to be record-breaking for many different aspects, notably the heat.
03:19But, of course, we're ending the summer in typical UK fashion with some very mixed weather
03:24on a bank holiday.
03:26And we'll keep you updated on our YouTube channel throughout the weekend.
03:30And as we head into meteorological autumn, I'm sure there'll be lots more weather to talk
03:34about next week.
