Kencho-ji is the oldest Zen temple in Kamakura and is known as the foremost of Kamakura’s “Five Great Zen Temples.” It was founded in 1253 by the shikken Hojo Tokiyori as a place for Zen practice, and its first head priest was a Chinese Zen monk named Lanxi Daolong.
