From the 8th to the 14th century, this complex—comprising Daisen-ji Temple and a Shinto shrine—flourished as a center of power and influence. With over 100 temples and 3,000 armed “warrior monks,” Mount Daisen boasted authority rivaling that of Mount Hiei, Mount Yoshino, and Mount Koya.
