Nikko Toshogu was built in 1617 as the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, which ruled Japan for 250 years. In 1636, Tokugawa Iemitsu—Ieyasu’s grandson and the third shogun—undertook a large-scale renovation, giving the shrine its current appearance.
