Meiji Jingu has eight torii gates. Torii gates symbolize the place where deities descend from the heavenly realm—in other words, the boundary between this world and the next. Before passing through a torii gate, it is customary to calm your mind and bow slightly. Once you pass through the gate, you enter a sacred space, and your visit to the shrine begins.
