Genesis Chapter 32 records Jacob’s fear of Esau and the night he wrestles with God.
Jacob goes on his way, and the angels of God meet him. He says, “This is God’s camp,” and names the place Mahanaim. He sends messengers ahead to Esau his brother in the land of Seir. The messengers return saying Esau is coming to meet him with four hundred men. Jacob is greatly afraid and distressed. He divides the people and the flocks into two camps. Then he prays: “O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac… Deliver me from the hand of my brother.” He prepares a large present for Esau—goats, sheep, camels, cows, and donkeys—and sends them on ahead in separate droves. That night he takes his family and crosses the ford of the Jabbok. Jacob is left alone, and a man wrestles with him until the breaking of the day. When the man sees that he does not prevail, he touches Jacob’s hip socket, and it is put out of joint. The man says, “Let me go, for the day has broken.” Jacob answers, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” The man asks his name and then says, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.” Jacob names the place Peniel, saying, “For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered.” The sun rises upon him as he passes Penuel, limping because of his hip.
