Genesis Chapter 23 records the death of Sarah and Abraham’s purchase of a burial place.
Sarah dies in Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan at the age of one hundred and twenty-seven. Abraham goes in to mourn and weep for her. He rises and speaks to the Hittites, asking for a property among them for a burying place. He requests the cave of Machpelah belonging to Ephron the Hittite. Ephron offers the field and the cave; Abraham insists on paying the full price. He weighs out four hundred shekels of silver. The field and the cave are made over to Abraham as a possession for a burying place by the Hittites. Abraham buries Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah east of Mamre.
