Genesis Chapter 29 records Jacob’s arrival in Haran and the beginning of his family.
Jacob comes to the land of the people of the east and sees a well in the field with three flocks of sheep lying beside it. Rachel comes with her father’s sheep. Jacob rolls the stone from the well’s mouth, waters the flock, kisses Rachel, and weeps aloud. He tells her he is her father’s kinsman, Rebekah’s son. She runs and tells Laban. Laban runs to meet him, embraces him, and brings him to his house. After a month Laban asks what Jacob’s wages should be. Jacob loves Rachel and says, “I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel.” The seven years seem to him but a few days because of the love he has for her. Laban gathers the people and makes a feast. In the evening he takes Leah and brings her to Jacob. In the morning Jacob sees it is Leah. Laban says it is not the custom to give the younger before the firstborn. Jacob serves another seven years for Rachel. Laban also gives his female servants Zilpah to Leah and Bilhah to Rachel. Leah conceives and bears Reuben, then Simeon, then Levi, then Judah. Rachel remains barren.
