Genesis Chapter 14 records the war of the kings, the capture of Lot, and Abram’s rescue.
Four kings make war against five. In the battle, Lot and his goods are taken captive. When Abram hears that his kinsman has been taken, he leads 318 trained men, pursues the enemy, and recovers Lot and all the goods. Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of God Most High, brings out bread and wine, blesses Abram, and Abram gives him a tenth of everything. The king of Sodom offers Abram the goods, but Abram refuses to take even a thread or a sandal strap, so that no one may say, “I have made Abram rich.”
