Genesis Chapter 28 records Jacob’s departure from home and the dream that changes everything.
Isaac calls Jacob, blesses him, and sends him to Paddan-aram to take a wife from the daughters of Laban. Esau sees this and takes Mahalath, the daughter of Ishmael, as a wife. Jacob leaves Beersheba and goes toward Haran. He comes to a certain place and stays there for the night because the sun has set. Taking one of the stones, he puts it under his head and lies down. He dreams: a ladder is set up on the earth, and the top of it reaches to heaven. The angels of God are ascending and descending on it. The Lord stands above it and says, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring… and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land.” Jacob awakes and says, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it… This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.” He sets up the stone as a pillar, pours oil on it, and names the place Bethel. He makes a vow that if God will be with him and bring him back safely, then the Lord shall be his God, the stone shall be God’s house, and of all that God gives him he will give a tenth.
