Genesis Chapter 16 records the account of Sarai, Hagar, and the birth of Ishmael.
Sarai, still childless, gives her Egyptian servant Hagar to Abram as a wife. Hagar conceives and looks with contempt on her mistress. Sarai deals harshly with her, and Hagar flees into the wilderness. The angel of the Lord finds her by a spring of water and tells her to return. He promises that her offspring will be greatly multiplied and that she shall bear a son named Ishmael. Hagar calls the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God of seeing.” She returns and bears Ishmael to Abram. Abram is eighty-six years old when Ishmael is born.
