00:00Adelaide Rushman going to the Red Sox is a huge deal on a variety of different fronts.
00:06Let's take it from the Orioles perspective for a second.
00:09This is a 1v or 1.1 guy, okay?
00:14Round one, pick one.
00:17Rushman was the top pick in the 2019 draft.
00:20He was the major linchpin.
00:23He was the focal point.
00:25He was the guy that helped this Orioles franchise win the division, make the playoffs in 2023 and 24.
00:32This was an Orioles team that looked like they were on the come-up, that they were going to be
00:38a team.
00:39Red Sox, Yankees, Orioles, right?
00:42Or Blue Jays, Yankees, Orioles.
00:45You thought this team had some faces, some players, some pieces that were going to be there for a long
00:52time.
00:53But Rushman's been hurt a lot over the last three years.
00:56He's a catcher.
00:58Catchers get beat up.
00:59Their fingers break.
01:01They get bumps and bruises and they're sore.
01:04Look, I was a catcher coming up.
01:07I don't think I ever caught anyone faster than 85 miles per hour.
01:11But it hurts, okay?
01:14Playing catcher hurts.
01:15And you play for 150 games or so, you're going to have knee problems, wrist problems.
01:21You're going to have arm problems.
01:22It's just what happens when you play that position.
01:26So at his age, which he's sub 30, but his body might be 35 for all we know.
01:32So the Orioles giving him up, somewhat surprising.
01:37Oriole fans, the reason why I would give the Orioles a loser grade from the trade deadline is because the
01:45Oriole fan was told today that we're not going to compete for a while.
01:50Or told yesterday that we're not going to compete for a while.
01:53And that, I think, hurts from a Tiger fan perspective, from a Nationals fan perspective, from an Orioles fan perspective.
02:01When your team is trading away pieces that you should keep and you know they should keep and sign long
02:08-term and they're not, that's the worry.
02:12And this winter, according to reports, is what always happens.
02:17The Orioles approached Rushman about an extension and he turned it down.
02:22Now, he's under club control for next year.
02:24He'll be a free agent in 28.
02:26The problem is what happens to contracts if we don't play baseball?
02:29In, excuse me, in 27.
02:33Orioles looking at that saying, okay, we have him for 26.
02:35We're not good.
02:37We have him for 27.
02:38There may not be baseball or there may be a shortened season for baseball.
02:42So that's not good.
02:42And he won't sign past 27.
02:44So we need to find what can we get for him.
02:47The Red Sox gave up two very highly thought of prospects, but they're prospects.
02:52I don't care where a prospect ranks really.
02:56Okay.
02:57Marcelo Meyer was a highly ranked prospect for the Boston Red Sox and he was traded to the Giants yesterday
03:03for a reliever.
03:06Okay.
03:06For a reliever.
03:07It was supposed to be Meyer and Anthony and Christian Campbell.
03:12These three kids who came up last year who looked great together.
03:15Well, Campbell's at AAA and he can't find a position.
03:19He can't hit.
03:20They signed him long-term.
03:22That was a mistake.
03:23Roman Anthony's got a hand problem.
03:24He can't stay healthy.
03:26He can't play.
03:27Even though he played in the world baseball classic, didn't look good in the world baseball classic, but he has
03:32not looked good at all for the Red Sox when he has been healthy enough to play.
03:35And Marcelo Meyer just was a complete malcontent and was partying too much.
03:39And that guy got shipped out of town and got sent to San Francisco.
03:42And he's let it leak out to the media that he's happy that he's out of Boston.
03:46He wants no part of it.
03:48I mean, you can have your prospects.
03:50Okay.
03:52Bleep them kids is what I've been tweeting back, sending back and forth to people who are whining about how
03:59much was given up to go and get Adelaide Rushman.
04:02He's a three-time all-star and the stats are pretty damn obvious.
04:07Okay.
04:07Look at the stats for the Red Sox catchers versus Rushman and what he has done in a year in
04:13which he's only played 67 games and he's been battling injuries the last three years.
04:17He's not fully healthy.
04:18If they can get the kid healthy, this is a guy who can be a catcher for the next four
04:22to five years for the Red Sox.
04:25Okay.
04:25And I'm talking defensively.
04:26The offensive numbers are great, but he is an above average defensive catcher.
04:31And so we often get caught up talking about the offensive numbers, but the defensive numbers for Rushman are huge
04:39with a pitching staff.
04:40That's going to get hopefully Garrett Crochet back next year and other pitchers.
04:44If you can sign Sonny Gray and if you can take care of Ranger Suarez, I mean, they've got a
04:48lineup, a pitching rotation that you like.
04:51They have a bullpen full of really high leverage arms.
04:54You need a catcher like point blank.
04:56You need a catcher.
04:57So I don't mind what the Red Sox did.
05:01I don't mind what they gave up to go and get them.
05:05I just, I think if you look at the move, you get a player, you give up prospects.
05:12This is why you have prospects in markets like Chicago, New York, LA, Boston, Philly too.
05:20Who cares about the kids?
05:22Who cares?
05:23Let somebody else do that, right?
05:25Let somebody else get the kid to be good.
05:28This is why Bobby Witt most likely is going to be somewhere else very soon.
05:31And the Royals are going to trade him because they can bring in Bobby Witt's a legitimate talent.
05:36Okay.
05:36Bobby Witt's a great player.
05:38He's going to go play somewhere else because someone's going to give the Royals a lion's share of other prospects
05:42to come in and potentially find the next Bobby Witt.
05:45Same thing can be said for other teams that just aren't going to lock up a guy and pay him
05:50big money.
05:52That's why it hurt when you see guys, you know, when Giannis talked about staying in Milwaukee for his career,
05:59it was like, my God, Giannis wants to stay with the Bucs.
06:03Like you don't see that very often where guys like I'm putting my flag down.
06:07I want to live here.
06:08I want to be here.
06:09And oops, look where Giannis is now.
06:11He's in Miami, right?
