00:00Lady is going to be covering it all like absolute crazy for the plane dealer in Cleveland.com.
00:04You'll hear her on the Orange and Brown podcast.
00:08She does a great job of all of it.
00:10She's on the Wise Heart Right.
00:11We make it right.
00:12Call Kyle Wright Hotline.
00:13She's Mary Kay Cabot.
00:14Hi, Mary Kay.
00:15How are you, Mary Kay?
00:16Hey, guys.
00:16How are you doing?
00:17What are you doing on your last day before training camp begins?
00:21You got anything drastic going on?
00:23You're cooking?
00:24Are you playing golf?
00:26Are you sleeping?
00:27What are you doing?
00:28I'm working, of course, just because we're not out at practice doesn't mean that we have the day off.
00:35So I'm sure anybody that covers the Browns is doing the same thing I'm doing today,
00:40and that's gearing up for camp and writing some things and getting ready to roll.
00:44First, boo, that should be umbrella drinks and pool.
00:48That should be the answer.
00:51Yeah, I wish.
00:52Yeah, we wish.
00:54Isn't that the truth?
00:55Veterans reporting today, we know what this situation looks like.
01:00I think everybody's always optimistic when you start a new season.
01:06I'm more curious maybe than anything.
01:08We know many of the storylines and everything else.
01:12I'm curious to see what Todd Bunker looks like.
01:14He's one of the oldest guys to ever get hired first time as an NFL head coach,
01:18and I wonder how he's going to do, Mary Kay.
01:21What impression has he made on you so far?
01:24Well, I think one of the things that stands out to me about Todd is that he really does kind
01:29of wear his emotions on his sleeve,
01:32and it's going to bring a different vibe and a different energy to practice,
01:37and we'll have to see how it all plays out.
01:39But I think that's one of the key things about him.
01:42If he's mad, you're going to hear about it.
01:44If he's happy, you're going to know it.
01:46Kevin was so even keel.
01:48Not that there's anything wrong with that.
01:49This is just a completely, completely different vibe, and it brings along with it sort of a different culture on
01:57the football team,
01:58and I think it will sort of trickle down and filter down.
02:01So I do think that that's one of the things to watch this camp.
02:06Besides the quarterbacks, Mary Kay, give me a couple spots that you're watching during training camp.
02:13Well, one of the guys that just walked into the building a little while ago, I just retweeted Jared Burst
02:18walking into the building,
02:20looking like he hasn't missed a workout over the last couple of months,
02:25and he's just got to be one of the biggest storylines of this camp to come in here
02:30and try to not fill the shoes of Miles Garrett, but try to make your own mark on this football
02:36team,
02:37put your own stamp on this defensive line.
02:39I think that's going to be really, really exciting to see what he can do,
02:43and I've written about this, and I've said this so many different times.
02:47I think he, in the same way that Todd Munkin is going to bring a different energy to the team,
02:52I think that Jared Burst is going to do the same thing.
02:55I think guys are going to be a little bit looser around him.
02:59I think they're going to be a little closer around him.
03:01I think he's going to be a unifier.
03:03I think he's going to bring guys together, not just in the building and on the field,
03:08but I think he's going to be one of those players where he will be having guys over to the
03:13house
03:14or he's going to go over to their places.
03:15I think he's going to kind of just bring them together with more camaraderie,
03:20and a lot of times that translates over to the field,
03:24and I think that they have to spread the wealth this year on that defense,
03:28and I think he's going to be a big part in making sure that happens.
03:33Mary Kay, they made huge changes on the offensive line,
03:36and in the last couple of years the Browns went from having a really good offensive line
03:41to having a really injured offensive line, and most everybody's been replaced.
03:47That doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be better.
03:51How do you see the offensive line developing with a bunch of veterans who were brought in
03:57and some key draft choices as well, obviously Spencer Fano?
04:00How does that group develop, and do you expect it to be good?
04:05Well, I think it's going to be a work in progress.
04:07I think it's going to be better than it was last year, but it might not be amazing week one.
04:12It's going to take some time for these guys to gel and come together.
04:16You have to be working together in concert on that line to make sure you're getting the job done,
04:22and these guys have never worked together before.
04:24So it's going to take a little time, and then the other part about it, I think,
04:28is that what we see in the first week might not be what we see in week three,
04:34and that might not be because of injury.
04:36It might just be because when they see it out on the grass, when the lights are on,
04:41the pads are on, the rush is on, sometimes you have to change things up a little bit,
04:46and you have to pivot.
04:47And so when you're working with five new starters on the line,
04:51you're trying to make sure that you've got the five best guys out there,
04:54that might really not reveal itself until you get into some games,
04:59and then you realize maybe you need to change it up a bit.
05:02That's what I was just going to ask you about, and I'm glad you went there.
05:06We're all kind of assuming that it's Fano, Zion Johnson, Elton Jenkins,
05:11probably Tevin Jenkins at right guard, and Titus Howard.
05:15Brailsford, if he wins the center job, Jenkins moves to right guard.
05:18Could you see any major shakeup as they get this thing going?
05:23Could DeJuan Jones work his way into a starting gig?
05:27Could Austin Barber work his way into a starting gig?
05:31Yes, and I've been writing about that.
05:33I have been writing about that lately in some of my Sunday stuff,
05:36that do not count DeJuan Jones out for some kind of a starting role.
05:41And if it doesn't happen in week one,
05:43it's probably going to happen at some point this season
05:46where he will be in there starting some games.
05:49George Warhop is very impressed with DeJuan.
05:51DeJuan looks really good.
05:54Even though he was coming off of an injury, he kept his weight down.
05:57He's in great shape.
05:58His attitude is good.
05:59And we know that he really loves playing at right tackle.
06:03I don't know if that is going to be a viable option for him
06:07because Titus Howard is there.
06:08But if he proves that he's one of the five best guys that should be out there,
06:13then they can tweak some things and move some things around a little bit.
06:16If you had to, you could even move Titus Howard inside to guard
06:20and then let DeJuan be out there on the outside.
06:23George Warhop refused to concede that DeJuan is just a swing tackle during minicap.
06:29And that means to me that jobs are still up for grabs a little bit,
06:33and we don't know exactly how this is going to play out yet.
06:37Mary Kay Cab at cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer joining us on the Wise Heart Right
06:40We Make It Right called Kyle Wright Hotline.
06:42Of course, you can listen to her on the Orange and Brown Talk podcast.
06:45You probably want to give that a listen after most days during training camp
06:48for their update and recap of what took place that day in Berea.
06:52All right, Mary Kay, I have a strict rule of I'm never going to tell you how to feel.
06:57So I usually try to make my guests think that way as well,
07:01that you don't need to tell me how to feel.
07:02Kyle, how concerned and are you have any level of concern of having five brand new starters
07:08on an offensive line?
07:09Because, boy, that's unorthodox.
07:11Well, it is.
07:13It is.
07:13But if you look at what happened last year, it really can't be any worse than what went on last
07:20year.
07:21And they've added some really good talent this year, and they also have depth.
07:26You mentioned Austin Barber.
07:28Or there could come a point this season where Austin Barber gets out there and plays
07:33and starts some games for them as well.
07:35So they have talent.
07:36They have depth.
07:37But it takes time to gel and to come together.
07:40And I think that's going to be the whole key.
07:42They have really, really good guys on that line.
07:46And, I mean, just look at Elton Jenkins alone.
07:48I mean, he's an all-pro player.
07:50Now, that happened for him at guard.
07:52But he was able to step in for the Packers and had a seamless transition to playing center.
07:58So he's a very, very talented player.
08:01And then the Browns, of course, are very excited about Spencer Fano.
08:05We'll have to see how that goes.
08:06You don't necessarily step into the left tackle job in the NFL and not have some growing pain.
08:14So I think you can expect that some of those will happen.
08:17He's also making the transition from starting his last two years at Utah at right tackle
08:22to moving over to left tackle.
08:24So, you know, there might be a little bit of a learning curve for him there,
08:28even though he played it in his freshman year.
08:31But, like I said, I think that as they go through the first three or four games,
08:36they will have a much, much better handle on who fits where
08:39and how this starting five is going to look.
