03:11For the big story at the moment, Sonia Gandhi, the Congress leader is now as we speak at the Mandir
03:18Magh police station where Priyanka Gandhi Wadra has been taken.
03:22Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav have been taken to the Chhatrasal Stadium in Model Town.
03:29All the protesters, mainly Congress MPs and Samajwadi party are being detained in different police stations across the country at
03:37the moment,
03:37even as Congress is protesting across those stations.
03:41So high drama taking place particularly outside the Mandir Magh police station and the Chhatrasal Stadium at the moment.
03:50Those are visuals that are just coming in.
03:53Sonia Gandhi outside Mandir Magh station.
03:55Moshmi Singh who's been tracking this relentlessly since the afternoon joins us.
03:59Moshmi, what is the latest that you're picking up?
04:02All the Congress leaders have been detained in different police stations across the city.
04:06At the moment, a lot of the action at Chhatrasal Stadium where Rahul Gandhi is.
04:10Priyanka Gandhi Wadra at Mandir Magh where Sonia Gandhi is.
04:14Can you give us more details of what's happening?
04:21See, Rajdeep, I can tell you that since the past three, four hours, this entire dramatic scenes are unfolding.
04:29We've been chasing buses and trying to find out where the leaders have been ferried.
04:33Rahul Gandhi there in Model Town in Chhatrasal Stadium.
04:37Priyanka Gandhi taken to Mandir Magh, we are seeing a lot of police vehicular movement in and around Latians, Delhi.
04:46And Sonia Gandhi has reached Mandir Magh police station.
04:49Now remember that Priyanka Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Akhle Shadha, we saw in the day,
04:54they were ferried in different buses perhaps and taken in different directions
04:59because there were a lot of Congress workers, a lot of supporters right there outside the PM's residence.
05:06And we saw lots of vehicles trying to chase these buses.
05:11Behind me you can see, behind me you can hear perhaps this noise is coming from barricades
05:17that are being moved by police to various nodal points
05:21to stop, in fact, cordon of the entire Latians, Delhi, anticipating that the Congress workers
05:28and other Samajwadi party workers might erupt on the streets.
05:32And Sonia Gandhi thereby, you know, also making a point.
05:36We also got a message from Robert Wadra over the entire meltdown that's happened.
05:43And now Sonia Gandhi is, in fact, reaching Mandir Magh police station at this hour,
05:49in fact, sending a message of, you know, perhaps unity and standing with this entire cause
05:55and protesting the detention of Congress leaders and Akhle Shadha.
06:00Okay, I'm going to, for a moment, also go to Rahul Gautam,
06:04who's actually at, where that action is taking place at Mandir Magh.
06:08Rahul Gautam, you're there where Sonia Gandhi is, has come,
06:13rare appearance of Sonia Gandhi in a public protest of this kind.
06:17Can you share more details as to where you are and what you're picking up?
06:24Okay, we'll try and, we'll try and get more on that detail.
06:29Remember, the paper leak protest has now reached the Prime Minister's doorstep.
06:32Rahul Gandhi and top opposition leaders being detained today
06:35after staging a sit-in near Seven Lok Kalyan Maag.
06:39Government says it's agreed to a debate,
06:41but the Congress is insisting Dharmendra Pradhan must resign the HRD minister.
06:46Let's take a report first from India Today's team of reporters.
06:49Take a look.
06:54The police crackdown on CJP protests against paper leaks
06:58turns into a major flashpoint that has cast a shadow on the monsoon session of parliament.
07:07Congress leaders led by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi,
07:11Party Chief Malik Arjun Kargay, Priyanka Gandhi Wadra and KC Venugopas
07:15staged a dharna near the Prime Minister's official residence at the Seven Lok Kalyan Maag.
07:22Two chief ministers, D.K. Shivakumar and V.D. Satishan
07:26and Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav joined the sit-in
07:30before they were forcibly evicted from the protest site by the police.
07:41Earlier Minister of State and the PMO Jitendra Singh had reached the protest site
07:46where he held talks with Rahul Gandhi.
07:48The Congress demanded the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan
07:52and a discussion in parliament on the crackdown on protesters.
08:18Minister Jitendra Singh claimed the government had agreed to the demand for a debate
08:23and that Rahul had added Pradhan's resignation to his list of demands later.
08:39He said,
08:59Earlier addressing the NDA Parliamentary Party's Mangal Millan meeting,
09:03Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke his silence on Neet Paper League.
09:07Calling the paper leak a grave sin, he assured the guilty would be punished.
09:12Prime Minister had stated very clearly that all those who were involved in paper leaks
09:19in the recent Neet Paper leaks are arrested.
09:24Thirteen of them are put into jail
09:27and Prime Minister desires that these people should be given
09:31most stringent possible punishment.
09:36The Cockroach Jantar Party rejected the Prime Minister's statement.
09:41The Cockroach Jantar Party rejected the Prime Minister's statement.
09:55Many opposition leaders, including Sharad Pawar and Arvind Kejriwal, visited the CJP protest site at Jantar Mandel.
10:06The opposition also stalled proceedings in Parliament, forcing an adjournment.
10:17Meanwhile, educationist Sonam Wangchuk, who remains on a hunger strike, shifted from Savdhajang Hospital to Midanta in Gurugram after getting
10:25a high court order in his favour.
10:27With Preeti Chaudhary, Mohsami Singh, Piyush Mishra, Rahul Gautam, Bureau Report, India Today.
10:34Okay, let me go to one of my guests today, Sudhanshu Trivedi, Senior BJP MP Rajya Sabha, joining us.
10:41Good to have you on the show, Sudhanshu Ji.
10:43Day of high drama.
10:44Many are saying that Rahul Gandhi, with his dharna and now being detained,
10:49has in a way stolen a march and has pushed your government on the back foot
10:54on the entire paper leaks examination issue.
10:57How do you respond?
10:58Are you on the back foot now?
11:02Rathip Ji, in your first statement, the word which he has used is aptly used.
11:07That is, day of high drama.
11:09Because now Rahul Gandhi seems to be, as it is his characteristic politics, he is perpetually in confusion,
11:18or rather than he is in a competition with CJP, because they were demonstrating in Jantar Mantar,
11:24getting a high voltage attraction from media.
11:28Now they thought that from where they can get better attraction.
11:32So I think Rahul Gandhi thought that they should go to Prime Minister's residence
11:36and then sat down on the street when MOS PMO Sri Jitain Singh Ji has come,
11:43have discussion and suddenly change all whatever is being discussed
11:47and try to lie down and then try to get a focus.
11:50So I think whatever is happening in India today is less a question to the government,
11:56more a question to opposition,
11:57because if the opposition would have been a mature opposition,
12:02a responsible opposition,
12:03and an opposition which instills the faith in all the opposition voices in India,
12:08they would have tried or rather than thought to operate through the opposition or NOP.
12:14No, you're saying it's an immature opposition.
12:19They will say this is a dictatorial government.
12:22This is a government which doesn't listen to the voices of students.
12:25This is a government which doesn't want to discuss the issues of need paper leaks in parliament.
12:30This is a government which says my way or the highway.
12:33The Prime Minister has not said a word publicly on the need paper leaks,
12:36which is why the opposition has no choice now, they say, but to hit the streets.
12:42Now I would like to remind you, after 2019, they are in perpetual pursuit of one issue or the other
12:51to hit the street.
12:53And the same people and same slogan.
12:56In this moment, Rajdeep, can you tell me that what is the correlation of this instance,
13:05what is the connection of using a slogan of Sita ke pati ka naam leka Nita ke pati ka ka
13:19kaam karna?
13:19Utter disrespect to Bhagawan Ram.
13:21What is the connection to Umar Khalid jail se rehaa hona chahiye?
13:24What is connection naam rahe ga Allah ka?
13:27So what I want to say, whether it is CA, whether it is Kisan, whether it is Pahelwaan,
13:32so I would like to say whether it is Musalman, whether it is Kisan, whether it is Pahelwaan, whether it
13:36is Nojawan.
13:38The face is same and the mask is different.
13:40No, no, you're not answering my question.
13:42No, no, Mr. Sudhan Shutrivedi, the direct question is,
13:47the opposition is saying, how else do we get this government to listen to our issues?
13:52You don't want these issues to be debated inside parliament.
13:55You don't want, the prime minister won't say a word outside parliament on the paper leaks.
14:00So naturally, the opposition is saying, this is the only way we can push the government
14:04to at least agree to debate these issues, to ensure accountability.
14:10Ensure accountability.
14:12The word accountability does not seem to be in your dictionary according to them.
14:16Rajdeep Jai, accountability comes with an inseparable responsibility.
14:21And I would like to say that Mr. Jitain Singh, who is an MOS in PMO,
14:26he has said that the government is ready for any discussion.
14:28But for that, you have to come to an established procedure of the parliament.
14:32You cannot create a ruckus.
14:34And again, I would like to say, as far as the responsibility is concerned,
14:38Rajdeep Jai, is Congress everywhere in opposition?
14:42No.
14:42They are in the government in four states.
14:45They should put up their model.
14:46Like when we were in opposition, Gujarat model was discussed.
14:50When we were in opposition, Madhya Pradesh has put up,
14:52when Shivra Singh Chauhan has said, lately, Lakshmi Yojana,
14:55and the Mamu word was assigned to Shivra Singh Chauhan.
14:58When we were in opposition, Kalyan Singh government and Rajna Singh government
15:01said, put up a non-order issue in Uttar Pradesh, how they tackled.
15:04So, what is your model in Telangana, Karnataka, now Kerala just came, and the Himachal?
15:10The model is, as Prime Minister today indicated in the Parliamentary Party affair,
15:15Dangan, we are doing Mongol villain, whether in Karnataka or in Punjab.
15:19So, you are perpetually fighting for power, desperately fighting for power, nothing concerned.
15:25If you are in opposition, but you are in power in those states, put up the model and say, look.
15:30You are saying, you are saying, no, no, you are saying they are not a constructive opposition.
15:35They are saying you are a dictatorial government.
15:38You tell me, when is this government list?
15:40It took the CJP protests yesterday to virtually reach the doors of Parliament
15:45for the government to even agree to speak to these student leaders.
15:48For the last one month, you were even ignoring the very existence
15:51of any student movement against your government.
15:53And we have seen this repeatedly.
15:55Whether it is with farmers, whether it is with other stakeholders,
15:59women wrestlers, it really takes people to hit the street for your government to wake up.
16:04That's why, according to the opposition, I repeat, they say they have no other option.
16:09Rahul Gandhi says, yeh ladai jari rahegi.
16:11We have no other option.
16:15Rajiv ji, you are saying since last one month, government for not listening.
16:20From the government side, I would like to say, for government to talk,
16:23there should be a designated person who will talk with a defined,
16:28objective or defined, demands.
16:32As soon as the defined demands and the designated person came,
16:35government were ready to discuss.
16:37Why doesn't the Prime Minister pick up the phone and speak to Rahul Gandhi?
16:40One, Rahul Gandhi is the leader of the opposition,
16:42the Prime Minister, leader of the country.
16:44They should be talking to each other.
16:45All these issues should be resolved amicably.
16:47Why is that not possible?
16:50Rajiv ji, you are talking exactly, you have used the word for the last one month.
16:55Where was Rahul Gandhi in the last one month?
16:57Absconding conspicuously.
16:59Suddenly disappearing and creating a ruckus.
17:02If he was a responsible opposition, he was not having any concern about it?
17:06Yes.
17:07You are putting an allegation on BJP?
17:08I accept.
17:09OK.
17:10According to you, the BJP was not sensitive.
17:12But the sensitivity of Rahul Gandhi was seven seas abroad,
17:16some undistosed destination, conspicuously disappearance,
17:20and suddenly he appears.
17:22And all sort of empathy comes overflowing out of it.
17:25And he thought that the Jantar Mantar has been taken over by the other party.
17:30So I have to create another drama in front of the Prime Minister's residence.
17:37So I would urge the student that be careful,
17:40because these type of forces want to usurp your agitation.
17:44And with due responsibility, Rajiv ji, I will say,
18:00when the Anna Andolan took place,
18:03you know better than many that the BJP RSS supported it
18:06because you wanted the Manmohan Singh government out.
18:08Andolans have always taken place in this country.
18:10Nav Nirmand Andolan,
18:12through which Prime Minister Modi among others,
18:14came into public life,
18:16was also supported by BJP.
18:17The entire Jantar Party, Andolan.
18:20Andolan's a part of society.
18:21You cannot say there is no space for Andolan in India.
18:25No, no, no, no, Rajiv ji, I categorically say,
18:28J.P. movement was not a non-political movement.
18:30It was a established political movement by the political leaders.
18:33Anna movement openly said,
18:35we will not come to Rajneet.
18:37We will eat children's lives.
18:38But you supported it.
18:41BJP RSS supported Anna movement.
18:44One thing I don't know.
18:45Who said BJP RSS supported it?
18:46It's well known.
18:46So, BJP RSS was already taking the stance from 2007, 8 and 9.
18:53And virtually, they took the line which the BJP was saying.
18:57So, you are saying that we supported rather than they tore the line
19:00which BJP as a responsible opposition was consistently fighting in the parliament.
19:06And if the parliament was not hearing,
19:07we gone to the court and got it ratified, whatever stand was.
19:10But Rahul Gandhi is saying he's the one who has taken up the need paper leaks until then.
19:14No, no, no, Rahul Gandhi is saying he's the first person to have voiced the need paper leaks issue.
19:30So, I urge the students, be very careful of those who are coming with the mask of your supporters.
19:38They are trying to complete or rather than usurp their political agenda because they are consistently being defeated and rejected
19:47by the people of India.
19:48Can I ask you, therefore, in conclusion, what is the solution?
19:53Does the government have a solution or the government is saying now that Rahul Gandhi has made this protest outside
19:58the prime minister's residence,
20:00I'm told government sources are saying this is a very dangerous precedent.
20:03Does that mean now there is complete breakdown in any kind of dialogue?
20:07The solution is that government has successfully done the need examination.
20:12The result has come.
20:14And those students who are seriously doing the exam, they got the result done.
20:18And with due respect, I would like to say several videos are available.
20:22The protesters who are not knowing even the full form of need,
20:25the protesters who are unable to tell the name of home minister, sorry, education minister,
20:30the protester who is saying I'm appearing for PCS unable to tell the name of vice president,
20:35and a number of videos are available.
20:36So there's no question, there's no question of Dharmendra Pradhan resigning, no question of it.
20:41There has to be some substantivity with a proper fact, then the government is sensitive.
20:47But up till now, the minister, the ministry which has conducted successfully that examination,
20:53and one sentence I would like to add, Radhimji.
20:55Your problem is still happening.
20:56When the need was not there, the seats were auctioned.
21:00For undergraduate MBBS, 25 lakh to 50 lakh.
21:03For postgraduate, 50 lakh to 1 crore.
21:05What was the, that was way beyond the capacity of the middle class and the lower middle class.
21:11It is the Narendra Modi government, which has brought this neat examination,
21:16so that all the seats, even of the private colleges, have come under the purview of the common middle class,
21:23and those who have been deprived.
21:25The private college owners are 90% of the Congress leaders.
21:29There may be a reason that they are very much upset and unhappy with the neat examination.
21:33This may be a trying to catch.
21:36It is the one that says,
21:41People have to understand this.
21:43Let me leave it there.
21:45Sudhan Shrutri Vedi, good to have you on the show.
21:47Thank you very much for joining me.
21:51okay in a moment i'm also going to be joined by praveen chakravarti of the congress to get a
21:55response but praveen hold on for a moment because uh our reporter rahul gautam is actually inside
22:01mandir mag station where you're seeing a lot of the action rahul what can you see around you
22:06sonia gandhi we saw a short while ago there at the station but can you give us more details
22:15well rajiv uh the environment here uh is absolutely chaotic and the congress supporters will come here
22:22they are fully energized given the fact that sonia gandhi uh reached here uh just a short while back
22:27priyanka gandhi wider is already inside uh along with other uh congress mps uh a clearly unprecedented
22:34day as far as congress party is concerned uh because uh you know uh two lops two chief ministers
22:40and hundred mps sitting outside uh on a dharna at seven acr at the same energy now we are seeing
22:47congress supporters giving a dharna outside uh mandir maghuli station against the detention of
22:53their leaders so clearly it seems that congress uh uh has decided that they are not going to relent
22:59and uh they are trying to pin up blame uh you know on government saying that government didn't
23:05engage students and that's why the situation has been uh you know has escalated to so much so when
23:09are when are these leaders when are these leaders likely to be released are these leaders going to
23:14be released or not
23:19well for uh as we speak uh there's not official word uh from delhi police but uh rahul gandhi has
23:27been kept at chattasal stadium in model town while priyanka gandhi vatra has been kept here at
23:33mandir mark police station then there are other mps also who've been taken away uh to kingsway camp so
23:38uh you know uh the official word is yet to come but obviously uh the the the police uh and
23:44the
23:45administration idea or intent would be to to keep these uh leaders off the street at this point of
23:50time because what we saw uh this afternoon was absolutely unprecedented uh this has this has uh
23:56many in congress believe has caught uh government off guard and that's why we saw uh you know uh
24:02uh pmo mos mr jitendra singh coming uh to all the way to the doorsteps of uh uh of seven
24:08lkm where
24:09rahul gandhi was sitting so clearly it seems that congress gloves are off uh uh clearly as far as
24:14congress is concerned they believe that uh that the the issues and the pertaining students should be
24:19heard inside the parliament they have they have court demands a immediately sack dharma indra pradhan
24:24b there should be discussion on uh need to paper league and other issues home minister should make a
24:30statement on what had happened uh uh uh in central delhi and also should give compensation to all those
24:36people who have lost their lives allegedly uh because of uh need people league so as far as congress is
24:41concerned they are not going to relent right not going to budge and that's why we are seeing this kind
24:46of a showdown that we witnessed uh this afternoon and it's still continuing right rahul gautam there
24:52joining us from outside mandir magh where a lot of the action is taking place let me go straight
24:57across to praveen chakravarti now congress rajasaba mp good to have you also on the show praveen you
25:03might have heard sudhanshu trivedi saying that the congress is trying to hijack the kokhrut janta
25:08party protest the congress lost out according to him uh in the media attention to the kokhrut janta
25:16party over neat paper leaks over the student protests therefore according to him this is pure drama
25:21being stayed by the congress i think we have to be uh serious about such a such a serious issue
25:29it
25:30can't be boiled down to some game of grabbing attention and hijacking and some competitive
25:37darnas and protests i mean seriously let us think about what's going on the youth of india are saying
25:44that we've lost complete trust in the system the youth of india are saying over a dozen students
25:51have killed themselves due to an error fault by the government because of paper leaks so we need
25:59accountability accountability meaning the red meaning the resignation of the education minister
26:04they've lost trust in the system no society can incur the wrath of its youth and prosper so this is
26:13that serious an issue it is not some hijacking and competitive no no but but does it require no no
26:21does it require a dharma to be staged outside the prime minister's residence a very high security zone
26:27the argument which the government is making is this a very dangerous precedent this is almost
26:31anarchic they are accusing rahul gandhi and the congress of spreading anarchy razeep there's nothing
26:37more dangerous to this country than the youth of this nation being despondent coming
26:43out in streets in protest and return being beaten the simple question is for 60 days 22nd of may
26:52was when they demanded accountability and the resignation of the education minister
26:56somebody their leader went on a fast there was absolutely zero attention paid for 60 days youth of india
27:04were were discarded they were not paid attention to so this is what is more important than this
27:10for the country i mean some vip security area surely we are responsible enough to know that we will not
27:17cause any
27:18harm to our own prime minister that is not the intent but the intent is to showcase the seriousness of
27:24what this country is facing yes but praveen the bjp says and so so does the minister jitendra
27:31saying that the congress is changing the goalposts you all originally wanted a debate in parliament the government was ready
27:37for a debate on need paper leaks then when the minister goes back to the
27:40the congress said no no we don't only want that we also want uh uh the minister's resignation now will
27:47the minister's resignation be decided on the streets of delhi
27:51first the demand for the resignation of the minister was made on the 22nd of may by the students and
27:58the youth
27:58the congress party and mr rahul gandhi amplified reiterated support and back that demand that is the
28:09that is the first demand that was a demand made by the students we back that we support that as
28:16parliamentarians and as a political party we have access to parliament parliament is where the nation's most
28:23important issues must be discussed that is why people sent us there the most important issue being
28:28today in the nation is india's youth and their despondency and their angst so we said we need a
28:35discussion in parliament but the demand for the resignation is a backing reiterating support
28:41amplification of what the students have asked for well you know let me just turn the clock back a bit
28:49in the last month is the kokhrut janta party that is seen to have spirited the demand and there is
28:54a
28:54belief that rahul gandhi was away not in the country at the time he staged uh one meeting chhatroki
29:00gunj in kota and then for four weeks was absent in a and in that in that period the vacuum
29:04was filled by
29:05the kokhrut janta party and therefore there's almost competitive politics congress believes the kokhrut
29:10janta party is being propped up by the armadmi party it's almost become competitive politics out there
29:15when the fact is if it is such a big demand why don't all of y'all come together
29:22no so please understand this is this this is not about i don't know this is not about competition
29:28not some sports game match where we are competing against each other in fact i would say if there are
29:34more political parties civil society organizations other intellectual groups that want to come and
29:40support and do it in their own manner whether they join some protest they do it in their own manner
29:45they do it wherever absolutely welcome this is a very very important issue facing the nation it's
29:51everyone's moral responsibility to support and amplify until there is a resolution so the real
29:58question is not mr gandhi's whereabouts or whether this is why did we not join earlier did we feel
30:05missed out left out none of that the simple question is why can't the prime minister get down from his
30:12high
30:12horse shed his ego for the future of this country for india's youth and say yes we made a mistake
30:19we will there will be accountability the education minister will resign this is how we will fix the
30:25system why not why not do that you go back what is so difficult about this you know let me
30:31go back
30:31to today's picture these are of course yesterday what happened i have a separate discussion on that
30:35but i want to ask you again when it comes to this entire issue are you saying that nothing short
30:42of
30:42dharmedra pradhan's resignation now will do is because that will be interpreted as a form of blackmail
30:48where the executive is being dictated to by the opposition as to who stays in narendra modi's cabinet
30:53and who doesn't rajdeep the demand is made by the students do you agree with me or not on 22nd
31:00of may
31:01the demand is made by the students being amplified by the opposition now there will be those who say
31:06that these students are not necessarily representative of all students the government
31:10says we've conducted a neat retest that's gone on smoothly what's the problem every time i ask a
31:16government spokesperson they say our accountability was officials have been sacked and we have conducted
31:22a successful neat retest you know there's a famous american saying called the buck stops here
31:28so the education minister because of his ministries um the misdemeanors 12 students committed suicide
31:37the demand has been made by the students i went personally to rajeev chalk yesterday met the
31:43students they told me very clearly that the more support they get including from mr gandhi for their
31:50demand the better it is i was in the march today with mr gandhi and other mps members of parliament
31:57where we went to the prime minister's residence we just sat down we sat down and we merely amplified
32:02and reiterated students demands this is about the students this is not about us this is about the
32:08youth and their demands not about us so again i'm saying this demand for resignation is their demand
32:16we are microphones that that can amplify this and that is what we did we had access to parliament
32:22we went into we went and sat in front of the prime minister's residence i got lifted up and detained
32:27a few hours earlier so there was there was a lot of chaos but let's just not get away from
32:33the real
32:34issue okay there needs accountability mr darminder padan has to resign india's youth have to be given
32:40confidence about the education testing system and the education system just two more quick questions one
32:46uh ati shi the former delhi chief minister says tweets very interesting that the same delhi police
32:52that was not allowing cjp to move even hundred meters towards parliament allowed rahul gandhi
32:58to reach right outside pm residence do we need any more evidence that congress bjp is one unit so
33:04the app has clearly broken away from the other opposition parties on this they seem to be suggesting
33:10you all are all part of some kind of giant jugal bandhi this is match fixing
33:17for anyone to even remote suggest that mr rahul gandhi is in cahoots with the bjp
33:25is i mean they must be off the rockers honestly they have to go get themselves tested to be serious
33:31i
33:31mean to be honest i was there in the walk we walked from 10 rajaji mark mr mallika arjuna kargi's
33:38home
33:38to the prime minister's residence i was there when we walked it was complete surprise to everybody
33:45and we decided to go there and sit and sit outside the prime minister's residence so there was no
33:51grand scheming and planning i mean this is absolutely laughable it needs to be dismissed
33:58the other point is that is this all about imagery about photo ops what you accuse the prime minister at
34:05times of you are trying to do grab public eyeballs this is about grabbing eyeballs and then hoping that
34:11this will lead into some kind of more sustained protest of the youth you are hoping to create
34:17some kind of a gen z revolution
34:22again anything that can amplify what the students and india's youth want mr rahul gandhi was in kota
34:29he was in utarakhand he did exactly similar things he spoke against paper leaks he talked about how the
34:37system should be fixed and today we undertook a march to the prime minister's residence why is is this
34:45alone some photo op or some hip or or uh and and the other uh efforts are not uh judged
34:52accordingly so
34:53it's very clear this is not about any we're not like i said we're not in some competition or match
34:59for some eyeballs or attention or any of those things there's a very simple fix like i keep telling
35:04you the prime minister just needs to get outside of his home comfort zone go to the students and say
35:09yes we made a mistake people are allowed to make mistakes we made a mistake i will suck the education
35:15minister let us sit down let us fix the system that's it you're calling essentially for an apology
35:21from the prime minister followed by a sacking of dharmendra pradhan you believe that this is the
35:26demand of the students being echoed by the congress party at the moment praveen chakravarti thank you
35:33very much for joining me here on the news today okay let's turn to more visuals coming in sonia gandhi
35:39at the mandir mark police station where remember priyanka gandhi vadra has been taken the breaking
35:44news that we're getting those are the visuals that you can see there supriya srinath priyanka gandhi vadra
35:50sonia gandhi and dipinder hudda inside the mandir mag police station these images coming in just a
35:57short while ago they are waiting to be released at the moment normally in such situations they get
36:03released in post 10 pm you would expect possibly these leaders to be released but those are visuals
36:10that we are getting from inside the mandir mag police station rahul gandhi and others have been
36:16taken to near the chathrasal stadium and you've got uh uh the others many of the others being put up
36:22here at the mandir mag station near parliament street so those are some of the visuals that are
36:28coming in at the moment dipinder hudda congress mp from rotak priyanka gandhi vadra supriya srinath
36:35congress spokesperson and sonia gandhi there in fact supriya srinath was to join us on the show
36:41she's now at the police station as we speak those visuals of course sonia gandhi making a rare
36:48appearance at a gathering like this clearly the congress is upping the stakes uh in this entire
36:54issue uh at the moment okay let's for a moment from there switch uh to what is really also at
37:02the
37:02core of what's happened because a day after the national capital witnessed violent clashes in the heart
37:09of the capital during the kokrut janata party's march to parliament questions are mounting how did
37:14the situation spiral so quickly out of control while the protesters accused the police of excessive force
37:21the police have released videos of stone pelting registered five fires was the massive turnout
37:28underestimated could the clashes have been prevented take a look
37:37the heart of delhi turned into a battle zone on monday
37:44the march to parliament called by the kokrut janata party brought thousands to the streets
37:51the protesters broke barricades and reached almost the gates of parliament
37:57despite a crackdown by the police a day later questions are being raised over the police action
38:07both police and protesters are giving their versions of how the events unfolded
38:15the cjp posted multiple videos that showed protesters against paper leaks being assaulted
38:29the party accused the police of barbarity and blamed them for the clashes
38:34the police are getting together
38:43the police are getting together
38:44реБm
38:45реБm
38:47реБm
38:50реБm
38:55реБm
39:00реБm
39:01реБm
39:05The police too posted videos of stone pelting by protesters at some locations.
39:14They shared photos of injured police officers.
39:17The police have so far registered five FIRs.
39:43The police evidently failed to anticipate the huge crowds.
39:46The thousands who turned up took the security personnel by surprise.
39:53Could the police have handled the protest better?
39:56That is a question left for the top cops to answer.
40:02With Shivani Sharma and Sushant Mehda, Bureau Report, India Today.
40:09So is the police guilty of excess against the student protesters?
40:14Joining me now is Dr. Kiran Bedi, India's first woman IPS officer.
40:18Someone who knows a thing or two about policing large crowds.
40:21Appreciate you joining us ma'am.
40:23How do you see what happened yesterday in the heart of Delhi?
40:26There are those who are seeing this as a militarized response by the police against defenseless students and activists rather
40:33than policing by consent.
40:34How do you see it?
40:38For me, this is not the first time.
40:40I've been in additional SP New Delhi, Parliament Street.
40:44I've seen bigger demonstrations than these.
40:47Bigger demonstrations.
40:49And as volatile as these.
40:52And when these are handled like this by the police, police is always on the receiving end.
40:57So, but what happened within, the video will tell you, the camera will tell you that.
41:04I am nobody to judge.
41:05Who did what?
41:06What went wrong?
41:07Who did excessive?
41:09Who did not?
41:10I'm no judge.
41:11You and I cannot judge sitting on the periphery and sitting in the...
41:15I think we have to see the video as it is to understand what happened.
41:20But as far as these demonstrations are concerned, I am no stranger to these.
41:25I've lived them for years as additional SP New Delhi, Parliament Street.
41:29No, no.
41:30Dr. Bedi, you know, we are not playing judge here.
41:32But I want to know, do you agree there should be a thorough inquiry?
41:35Because we've seen videos of police using the Dundas against seemingly defenseless protesters
41:41in what prima facie appears excessive.
41:44Many of them very, very young teenagers.
41:46But we've also seen some instances of stone pelting and vandalism on police vans.
41:51We've seen both.
41:52Should there be, in your view, a full and thorough inquiry into whether there was police excess?
41:57Yes or no?
42:02Well, how the police responded, how the demonstrators responded, only the videography will do.
42:08But it's a question of what do you look at?
42:10What does the police look at?
42:12What does a common person look at?
42:14It's the way you look at.
42:16No, no.
42:16You're not getting my point, ma'am.
42:17Should there be an independent inquiry into whether there were police excesses or not
42:22in handling these protests?
42:23Should there be a court-ordered inquiry?
42:24Today, the Delhi High Court washed its hands off, saying, don't bring these issues to us.
42:29Do you believe there should be a court-ordered inquiry into whether there was excess force
42:33used against the students?
42:37I think the police department itself should examine it.
42:40How did it go?
42:41How did the demonstration go?
42:43I think that's important because this is what police...
42:46Why does the police record?
42:47Police record it to analyze the behavior of the crowd.
42:52How did the police men respond?
42:54How did the violators respond?
42:56And remember, when you are using force and you're dealing with the violence,
43:01force is always debatable.
43:05It's always debatable.
43:06And particularly when it is towards a sensitive place like the Parliament House.
43:11So therefore, I think we need to become dispassionate about it and objective about it.
43:18And not start another issue.
43:21Would you have signed off on similar orders for beaten charges and heavy deployment against
43:27young protesters raising seemingly valid concerns like exam scams, ma'am?
43:32Aren't the videos that I've seen circulating damaging the image and reputation of the police?
43:36I want a direct answer.
43:40What circulates is what suits.
43:43I think what's important is to understand it all.
43:45And police does not enjoy sadistic pleasure in hurting anybody.
43:50No.
43:51Police has never enjoyed sadistic.
43:53We don't.
43:54Delhi police doesn't and nor does any police.
43:56It's not sadistic pleasure to hurt or injure.
43:59It is to control and enforce.
44:02And where you fail, you are again.
44:04It's damned if you do and damned if you don't.
44:06So I am speaking as a professional policeman who has handled very big demonstrations during Raj and Raj's time.
44:14This is the early 80s when you used to have huge about Janata Party and the JNU demonstrations.
44:20Huge.
44:20And I've seen no way did the police come up and say, well done, you handled it.
44:25Because when you use force, when you do Zlatty charge, you don't wait Zlatty charge.
44:30Right.
44:30If somebody innocent also gets it.
44:32But you are there to control a long-order situation.
44:36So all I'm trying to tell you is not as a biased police officer, but as a professional police officer
44:41who's also handled demonstrations outside Parliament Street till then.
44:46But because they used to be violated during the pre-emergency and post-emergency times.
44:51Okay.
44:51Let me leave it there, Kiran Bedi.
44:54Good to have you on the show.
44:55You are saying that allow the police to complete an inquiry.
44:58Well, we hope that whatever inquiry is completed, that those details will be out in the public domain.
45:05When anyone has used excess force, they will be acted against.
45:10Okay.
45:10I want to turn from there.
45:12We are now getting fresh visuals of Rahul Gandhi, who's just come out of the Chhatrasal Stadium, where he and
45:17other Congress leaders were detained.
45:19And Sachin Pilot was there, meeting Rahul Gandhi a short while ago.
45:23Sachin, you're in a car, either on your way to Chhatrasal Stadium.
45:26Give us more details.
45:27We are told that Rahul Gandhi and others are going to be released from the stadium.
45:31How do you see all that's happened in the last couple of hours today in Delhi?
45:35Some unprecedented scenes outside the Prime Minister's residence.
45:40Well, first of all, these are unprecedented times.
45:43I have never seen before the government of any party acting in the way that it has.
45:48Two days in a row.
45:50Yesterday was a barbaric display of arrogance and power.
45:53Young people, young students asking for justice were beaten black and blue.
45:57Hundreds are in hospital.
45:59There was tear gas shelling.
46:00There was pattern, there was lati charge.
46:02And today, when Mr. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, the Congress MPs and a host of other leaders of the opposition
46:08were sitting in on what is called the Lok Kalyan Marg.
46:11Now, Lok Kalyan, if you're sitting in asking for justice, asking for debate, asking for resignation of a minister who
46:17has clearly been incompetent.
46:19What was the reason?
46:20The way they mistreated the leader of opposition.
46:23Picking him up and putting him in a bus and throwing him in a police station for hours together.
46:27Because it's a VIP area.
46:29The government says, Mr. Pilot, that's a VIP area.
46:31If you want to protest, do it in parliament.
46:33Parliament is on.
46:34Why not protest inside parliament where all the MPs are?
46:37Why go outside the PM's residence?
46:39So, is that someone's personal property?
46:42You're going in only protesting the embassy of parliament.
46:45They're not some known criminals.
46:46The best way it would have been to agree for a discussion, agree to the demands and have at least
46:52an approach to resolve the matter.
46:53But the way the police acted, I don't even blame the police, Rajdeep.
46:56I think it's the government that got rattled across the country.
46:59There is now empathy and sympathy for young people.
47:02And we as politicians, especially in the opposition, believe it's our duty to speak for those people who have been
47:06brutalized, who have been cheated.
47:08And so many of young people have lost their lives through suicide.
47:11It cannot be any worse than it is for young people today.
47:14So, are you piggybacking on that student anger?
47:19You're saying there's student anger widely.
47:21Are you piggybacking on it?
47:22The student anger has been there for months together.
47:24But what happened yesterday, young people, not from any political party, were coming and asking for justice.
47:30And what we have been saying, Rahul Gandhi just started this in Kota a month and a half ago.
47:34Asking for people to understand that we have been taken for a right.
47:36We wanted justice.
47:37We want transparency and some accountability.
47:41You know, 140 papers have been leaked in the last 10 years.
47:43Need paper was leaked two years ago.
47:45There was a CPI inquiry.
47:46Nothing has come off it.
47:47No resignations, no expulsions, no accountability.
47:50Again, this time, when there was a re-exam for need, 2 lakh people appeared less than they were for
47:55the main exam.
47:56That means 2 lakh people missed the opportunity.
47:58It is the complete failure of the system.
48:01That collapsing of the system is what is most painful.
48:04But I think there is pent-up anger amongst young people.
48:07And we in the opposition are duty-bound to respond to their anger.
48:10But the way the government reacted,
48:11the way they have brutalized, beaten up young people,
48:14and the entire opposition almost was taken to jails.
48:17Only because they wanted to sit in and say something and make our voices heard.
48:21No, no, no.
48:21That is not the way a government should talk to you.
48:23Two points from what you said.
48:25You are saying paper leaks is a major issue.
48:28It's a major issue even when you were in power.
48:30Even in Rajasthan.
48:31I mean, are you saying every time there is a paper leak,
48:33the minister will have to resign?
48:34Is that now what the Congress is saying?
48:35Because when you all were in power,
48:37there were paper leaks in your own home state.
48:39It is a huge problem.
48:41The students are angry.
48:42They are incensed by what's happening.
48:44But there will be those who will say,
48:46this is a systemic problem.
48:47Why only blame the Modi government and Dharmendra Pradhan?
48:51Rajdeep, please understand.
48:53There will be criminals who will commit crimes.
48:55There will be misgovernance.
48:57But the government is known for the action it takes.
48:59And I challenge you,
49:00in the last 10-12 years of this government,
49:02not a single person has been put behind bars
49:04who is of any relevance.
49:06And to my mind,
49:07today when there is a constant leakage of papers,
49:09time after time,
49:10especially for NEET and other exams,
49:12there is no one to take up responsibility
49:14and say, yes, I am accountable
49:16and I will make sure it doesn't happen.
49:18No transparency, just investigations.
49:20And look at the way theyтАж
49:22I mean, for one month, people were protesting.
49:24Nothing happened today.
49:25The entire parliament was up in arms,
49:26wanting a discussion.
49:28House got adjourned.
49:28And when Lahulji sat on a Dharnam,
49:30look at the way he was dragged.
49:32He was bleeding from the nose.
49:34And you know, the way to act,
49:35that is not how you act in a responsible democracy.
49:38You can use brute force of the police
49:40to subjugate a one voice,
49:42but he can't subjugate the voice of millions.
49:44And I'm afraid,
49:45today unfortunately,
49:45people have seen
49:46that this government is full of arrogance.
49:48It does not want to discuss,
49:50debate, understand, listen,
49:51and forget empathy and sympathy.
49:53They are not even concerned
49:54about the young people
49:55who keep tom-tomming
49:56about the future of our country.
49:57And I think it is all of us,
49:59not just us as politicians,
50:00but all of us first get up and stand
50:02and say,
50:02yes, we want these people
50:04to have a better future.
50:05Not in this way.
50:06Forget the unemployment and price rise.
50:07But just the way people are losing trust
50:09in the entire system,
50:11that I think is the most painful part of it all.
50:13You know,
50:13because,
50:14Sachin Paila,
50:15the government says,
50:15look,
50:16we are winning election after election.
50:17That includes the youth vote.
50:18The youth is still with Mr. Narendra Modi.
50:21How do you then,
50:22you know,
50:22how can the Congress claim
50:23that the youth have turned
50:24against the government?
50:25That all of this is being done
50:27because you all are in a battle
50:28for eyeballs
50:30with the Kokhrut Janta Party.
50:32They've stolen a bit of your thunder.
50:33That's why Rahul Gandhi
50:35and the Congress today
50:35decided to do this high-profile event.
50:38Let me tell you,
50:39anybody who opposes
50:41the central government
50:43or the ideology of the BJP NDA
50:45is part of the opposition.
50:47I don't think anybody
50:48is trying to say,
50:48everyone has a right to protest,
50:50form a party,
50:51fight elections,
50:51who's stopping that?
50:52But as a principal opposition party,
50:54as leader of the opposition,
50:55it is Rahul Ji's moral responsibility
50:57and constitutional responsibility
50:58to speak up for what he thinks
50:59is important in this country.
51:00No, so I all,
51:01I all,
51:02I all ready to support
51:03the Kokhrut Janta Party
51:04or want them to support you?
51:06I all on one page?
51:07I am here as the Congress party
51:09supporting young people.
51:11We don't want any young boy or girl
51:12to feel disheartened
51:14or to lose faith in the system.
51:16Our fight is for justice
51:17and transparency
51:17and accountability.
51:18You cannot be in government
51:20and rule with such arrogance.
51:21You can win one or two elections,
51:22but it doesn't mean
51:23that you are not accountable
51:24or answerable to people of India.
51:26Young people have seen enough of this
51:27and I think they are fed up
51:28with the kind of response
51:30they get from this government.
51:31No communication,
51:32no dialogue,
51:33no interaction,
51:34no understanding of what is going on.
51:36And even in parliament,
51:38Rahulji and other people
51:39are never allowed to speak.
51:41You put off their mics,
51:42there is no all party meeting
51:44on important issues.
51:45This kind of arrogance
51:46I think is now telling
51:47and it's about time
51:49that people have risen up.
51:50I tell you one thing, Rajdeep,
51:52it's not about winning votes
51:53and winning elections.
51:54You know,
51:54that cycle will come and go.
51:56But the young people
51:57who we all have so much hope
51:58and faith in,
51:59they should not lose
52:01the confidence
52:02in our system of education,
52:04examinations
52:05and you know,
52:05the life ahead.
52:06That's a dangerous sign
52:07for this country.
52:08But the way the government
52:09acted today
52:09with the entire opposition
52:11and the way they were picked up,
52:12hauled into buses
52:12and you know,
52:13shoved into police stations,
52:15that's not becoming
52:16of a government
52:18that is democratically elected
52:19and listens to people.
52:21So, in conclusion,
52:22these protests will continue.
52:23Do you believe
52:24this is the start
52:25of these protests?
52:27Look,
52:28there is huge unrest
52:29amongst people
52:30and we in the opposition
52:31only want justice.
52:33There are three things.
52:33We want the recognition
52:35of the education minister.
52:36We want a proper discussion
52:38in parliament,
52:39acceptability of false
52:40that committed a crime
52:42that has happened in parliament.
52:43We have an open discussion.
52:45And lastly,
52:46all those people
52:46who have had FIRs,
52:47these young people
52:48who have been,
52:48you know,
52:49put under FIRs,
52:50they should be taken away
52:52and young people
52:52should be taken into confidence.
52:54And we are all over the country.
52:55People have now feel agitated.
52:57There is no election tomorrow.
52:59There is no voting tomorrow.
53:00But it is our right,
53:01our duty and our responsibility
53:02to stand up and speak
53:03for what we think is important.
53:05Will you all provide
53:06an alternative?
53:07One of the things
53:07that a lot of young people
53:08tell me,
53:09it's all very well.
53:10We do not approve
53:11of the way
53:12of these exam leaks,
53:14of the way
53:15many exams get delayed.
53:17They have huge problems
53:18with the education system.
53:20But they want to know
53:21what would the Congress do
53:22if you were in power
53:24or in the states
53:25that you are in power.
53:27Well,
53:28I will abolish the NTA.
53:29That's the National Testing Agency
53:31formed,
53:32especially to avoid
53:33and stop
53:34leakage of papers.
53:35It's become
53:36the National Trauma Agency.
53:38We will disband that.
53:39We should disband that.
53:40Create a system
53:42which is foolproof.
53:43People who
53:44allow mistakes to happen
53:45or are involved
53:46in committing crimes
53:47should be taken to task
53:48and immediately
53:48put behind bars.
53:50And people at the highest levels,
53:51ultimately,
53:52the moral responsibility
53:52is of the people
53:53who run the system.
53:54You can't put
53:55FIRs against
53:56some clerical staff
53:57or some people
53:58in the door
53:58down the pyramid.
54:00You have to be
54:00at the top of the chain
54:01accountable for what happens.
54:02And I can assure you today
54:04that this government
54:05is certainly not acting
54:06in the way
54:07that it should have acted
54:08as far as young people
54:09are concerned.
54:10Let me leave it there.
54:11for joining me,
54:12I know,
54:13on a very tough day
54:14where you are
54:15moving from one place
54:16to the other.
54:17Sachin Pilot,
54:17thank you very much
54:18for joining me
54:19on the show tonight.
54:20I also want to turn
54:21to Priyanka Gandhi-Wadra
54:23who is speaking
54:23at the moment.
54:24Let's listen in
54:24to what Priyanka Gandhi-Wadra
54:25has said.
54:27What will happen in that system?
54:29For that,
54:29you will have to discuss
54:30for that.
54:31You will have to listen
54:31to the Dharminder Pradhan.
54:34You will have to listen
54:35to the Dharminder Pradhan.
54:37Listen to the Dharminder Pradhan.
54:39Do you have to resign
54:40to the Dharminder Pradhan?
54:40Yes.
54:41There is a discussion
54:41to the Dharminder Pradhan.
54:43And the students
54:44protest to hear
54:45the Dharminder Pradhan.
54:46We need to listen
54:48what do we do?
54:49What do we do?
54:50We do?
54:51We do?
54:53We do?
55:22We do?
55:24In the education system, the paid money is 1.4 lakh crore.
55:28Have you ever thought that the loan of Adani and Ambani is 16 lakh crore?
55:3516 lakh crore is being forgiven.
55:39And in the whole country, you have 1.4 lakh crore.
55:43Do you have to buy the bill?
55:47We need to discuss what students are saying.
55:54They need to listen to their students.
55:55They don't want to drink water.
55:57They don't want to drink water.
55:59There are little children in the hospital.
56:01Look at their parents.
56:05And you have to take responsibility.
56:07You have to take responsibility.
56:10Because of this country you will take care of your students.
56:13You can take responsibility and look back this country.
56:17They are saying the truth.
56:21Leave our children.
56:23Listen up.
56:24Listen up.
56:26We need to discuss this.
56:28There are no discussions.
56:29I want to say something from the LOP.
56:32We don't need permission to ask ourselves,
56:36but not to pay permission.
56:48Priyanka Gandhi Wadra saying that the government has turned arrogant and is simply unwilling
56:53to hold a discussion on these critical issues in parliament.
56:57Clearly it's been a day, as I said, where there's been a standoff of a kind we haven't
57:01seen in a long time.
57:02I'm right outside the Prime Minister's residence, Rahul Gandhi and the Congress taking their
57:07battle right up there.
57:09Where do you stand?
57:09Has it weakened or in a way strengthened that battle against Neat Leaks?
57:14You can, of course, put your views on indiatoday.in.
57:17I want to give you my take at the end.
57:20My take, Rahul Gandhi's detention has turned, some would say, into a political self-goal
57:27for the Modi government.
57:28Instead of allowing a peaceful march or indeed allowing a discussion in parliament, letting
57:35this protest pass, the authorities have handed the Congress perhaps exactly what it wanted.
57:41The image of an opposition leader being stopped from raising questions of public concern.
57:48In a democracy, dissent should be managed with restraint, not excessive force.
57:53Equally, protests must remain peaceful, avoid slipping into confrontation.
57:58In an ideal world, all these issues should be settled on the floor of the House in parliament.
58:04But unfortunately, parliament in these times has become dysfunctional.
58:09Let me also say this, politics thrives on symbolism.
58:13And today's images of Rahul Gandhi being detained on a dharna will perhaps travel much further
58:19than the arguments behind the protests.
58:21Yes, we are in that sense in an insta-Gen Z generation.
58:26Sometimes governments strengthen their critics by reacting more aggressively than the situation
58:31demands.
58:32A little bit more humility would be well advised.
58:36Think about it.
58:38That was my take.
58:41Thanks for watching.
58:42Stay well.
58:43Stay safe.
58:44Good night.
58:45Shubhraatri.
58:45Jai Hind.
58:47Namaskar.
58:47News without the noise.
58:49Bye for now.
58:52Bye for now.
58:54Bye for now.
58:55Bye for now.
58:57Bye for now.
58:57Bye for now.
58:57Bye for now.
