00:00on 95.7 The Game.
00:02Alright, it's time for the crossover brought to you by Bay Alarm.
00:05Rest easy, we've got you covered.
00:06Bayalarm.com
00:08Evan Giddings in for Daryl the Guru Johnson
00:11Mark Grandy in for Mark Willard
00:13and Dan Dibley along with us.
00:15It is a crossover. What's up guys? How you doing?
00:17Doing great. How are you?
00:18Yeah, miss you Stiney.
00:20I was hoping that maybe we would have a moment
00:23where we could, I don't know, say goodbye
00:25and embrace yesterday
00:27and shake hands and
00:28exchange ideas about
00:30the Irish match. I see you five
00:33days in a row. He's Italian.
00:35Sometimes, although, I mean, coming up
00:36you're going to be gone for about nine days and so
00:39I thought that we had bonded. I thought that
00:40we did. Yesterday at Bay Street
00:43for those of you who didn't know, it was a watch
00:45party at Bay Street Emeryville which was an
00:46absolute unmitigated
00:49success. The match was
00:51tight throughout and
00:53Stiney was standing and I was sitting
00:54with my wife and our friends the Crowleys
00:57and Ernie Chavez eventually
00:59would join. Except with Ernie and I.
01:00You and Ernie and other listeners and then
01:02in about the 71st minute I swiveled
01:05to my right to check on Stiney
01:07and adios
01:09pelota.
01:11So, those appearances
01:13are two hour appearances. Correct.
01:15And you got there right at
01:171130 as did I.
01:18I was actually there at 1120.
01:20Okay. I was there at 1127 but you
01:23and I both like arrived
01:25at the same time. And I left
01:27at 145 so I actually gave him
01:28almost two and a half hours. Gutsy.
01:30Yeah. Way to ghost. Yeah. I'm not
01:32you know I'm not asking for more money.
01:34No. It's just what I do. But a heroic effort
01:36and I thought the event was so fun
01:39that I mean I stayed throughout the
01:40entirety of the 120 minutes and
01:42the 30 minute halftime. Why would you
01:44leave before the game's over? Don't you want to watch the
01:46rest of the game? I was
01:48going. I had another commitment. How about
01:50that? Another appearance. No.
01:53I was you know we're checking out some stuff
01:54around Oakland. Too bad. You missed the best part of the game.
01:57Yeah. The final 20-ish minutes of
01:58regulation and then extra time. Yeah. I ended up
02:00seeing the goal on TV later. All right.
02:02But
02:04yeah I was looking at some
02:06looking at some departments
02:08and stuff around Oakland. Oh.
02:11Condos and small places. Strong.
02:13You guys looking to downsize?
02:15Oh yeah. For sure. Pretty soon.
02:17Hopefully. Yeah. Yeah we got to get
02:18we got to get smaller. We got to get like the
02:20Warriors. We got to go small. Like
02:22Steve Martin. Let's get small. That's right.
02:24For those of you who are you know
02:2655 and over. You know the record.
02:29Yeah. Yeah. Hey how about that Yaxle?
02:31Pretty good huh? Yeah. Summer League
02:34championship game MVP joins just a
02:36long list of greats that have won that
02:38award. Such as? Yeah exactly. Last year was
02:42Kyle Filipowski. Yep. Okay.
02:45A year before that. Yeah. The winners. A lot of blue
02:47bloods in this group. Jalen Wilson
02:49of the Brooklyn Nets. Do you know who that
02:52is? What about the year prior? Cam
02:54Whitmore of the Houston Rockets. Oh boy.
02:56Yeah. What a summer he had. He still
02:58hasn't emerged. Before that. Keegan
03:01Murray of the Kings. Okay. Good little
03:03player. Before that Davion Mitchell and
03:05Cam Thomas. They were co-MVPs. Sure.
03:08They did that one year. That worked out.
03:09The late great Brandon Clark. Rest in
03:12peace. One of the year before that.
03:15But yeah. It doesn't always mean you're
03:17that. It doesn't always mean you're going
03:18to become a star. But it's certainly
03:20better than not winning. Now did any of
03:22those guys best the number three pick in
03:25the draft who is also compared to that
03:29same player? Because to me that's the more
03:31significant part about it is he did it
03:33against Cam Boozer who he guarded the
03:36entire game and was better than when the
03:39game was on the line. And according to
03:41Yaxle, Cam's butt got tight. And he got
03:45a lemon booty. And every time he plays
03:47him he searches for revenge and the
03:49refs apparently always bail out Boozer.
03:51Is that what he said? He searches for
03:52revenge from a February regular season
03:54game between Michigan and Duke. I don't
03:56really understand the issue there. But I
03:58do think that he's trying to prove at all
04:00times that he's better than his peers.
04:02And yesterday he was he was absolutely
04:04correct. I mean he should be better than
04:06his peers. Better than Cam Boozer?
04:09Well these aren't his peers. That's what I'm
04:11saying. Yeah. Like he he should be better
04:13than the guys he's playing against. Right?
04:16Well Boozer was the number three overall
04:17pick. Because of his upside probably.
04:20Although. I mean he's. No you know what
04:22I'm saying though. Like. Boozer. What are
04:24the ages of the guys who were drafted in
04:26the top four? Well nobody else is going to
04:27be 24 in two months. Yeah. So it stands
04:30the reason why he should be more advanced
04:33than those guys. Yaxle's peers with this
04:34guy these guys only because of the draft
04:36class. Correct. Yaxle's age peers have
04:38been in the NBA for three years. Correct.
04:40Correct. Correct. So I don't I don't expect
04:42Yaxle to be as good as Cade Cunningham or
04:47Franz Wagner right off the bat. But I expect
04:50him to be better than like the guys who are
04:5319 or 20 right now. Barring somebody just
04:56being off the charts which is possible. It's
04:59possible you know a cuff or one of the top
05:01four could just be like a star. But other
05:05than that. You don't like him? Have you seen
05:09him defensively in the summer league? Does
05:11he defend? No. And it's not only no
05:13effort. It's also just he has no clue
05:15where to be. He'll lose his guy. He'll
05:18just ball watch and his guy will just
05:20quickly rotate from the left wing to the
05:22left corner wide open for a three. It is
05:24bad defensively. Sounds like a perfect
05:27Sacramento King. Absolutely. Well I was
05:30thinking about watching the game
05:31yesterday. Was it Tim Kawakami that
05:33reported that the Warriors had Yaxle
05:36Lundeborg just below Cam Boozer as the
05:40best player or most most most pro ready
05:43player? I think he was tied with somebody
05:46else. Was it Acuff? I forget who the other
05:48guy was. I think they he they had him
05:50ranked like the top five. Oh it was Burris.
05:53Burris. Burris. Yeah the guy who got taken
05:55right before him. That's right. He had a good
05:57summer league too. I like him. Yeah so but I
06:00think that's like it to me the entire
06:02summer league experience is a confirmation
06:05of what they told us he would be which is
06:08a veteran guy big body you know dual
06:11threat pass shoot can defend a lot of
06:14positions. Yesterday was against a guy
06:16who's gonna be playing power forward and
06:18you know whether you believe that summer
06:21league is the end-all be-all doesn't
06:22really matter because if he wasn't what
06:26they had promised then I think we would
06:28be kind of raising our eyes at are you sure
06:30you got this pick right because if you're
06:33taking a 23 year old player that player
06:35better be good otherwise well why didn't
06:38you try to grab a guy who's you know you
06:41could develop a little more as younger has
06:43more potential and upside and so I I thought
06:47that it was just a kind of a confirmation of
06:49what the Warriors have been advertising and
06:51it's nothing but a good sign. And it's what he
06:55had basically advertised throughout his whole
06:57sixth year in college which is he's a grown
07:00man he's 23 and so you go to summer league
07:02to your point and you're playing against
07:04mostly guys who are less experienced and or
07:07younger and you know Cameron Boozer is one
07:09of those guys I don't even think he's 20
07:11yet and Boozer is great and when they went
07:13back and forth in that one game that they
07:15played in February and Duke actually handed
07:17Michigan their second loss of the year Duke
07:20beat him once without Yaxel and then Duke
07:21beat him again and so I'm sure that Lendeborg
07:24was thinking yeah it's a little bit of a
07:26payback spot for me personally even though
07:29it's not in the NCAA tournament and they
07:31didn't have to face Duke in that tournament
07:33because Duke lost to UConn but I'm sure he
07:35was motivated by that but if you are 23
07:38almost 24 you should be out there kind of
07:41grown manning some of these other younger
07:42players. No doubt about it and and you know
07:47Boozer right now is somebody that I guarantee
07:51a Lendeborg thinks he's better than right
07:54now there's probably no doubt about it and
07:58you know what like that's the thing maybe
07:59he is like Lendeborg may have a better
08:02rookie year than than some of the picks
08:04that are higher than him the question is
08:07going to be will those other guys
08:08eventually reach a potential that you know
08:12league executives thought they'd meet and
08:15eventually end up better than Yaxel but I
08:17think Yaxel is poised to have as good a
08:20rookie year as anybody maybe with the
08:23exception of Acuff because he's going to go
08:25to a team and probably play a lot but I
08:28mean Yaxel is going to have a lot of
08:29opportunity here I think next year.
08:31Even if LeBron's here?
08:33I think even if LeBron's here yes I do.
08:38I do.
08:39I'm more interested in the I'm more
08:41interested in the atmosphere with with
08:44LeBron and Draymond rather than the
08:46minutes that are going to be available to
08:49Lendeborg because if Lendeborg can play
08:52that'll encourage those other guys to
08:54maybe load manage a little more to
08:56create that time.
08:58I mean I think putting up numbers of
09:00guys in his class is going to be hard but
09:02that's why yesterday his numbers are
09:04similar to Boozer but they won the game.
09:08His his play was best when it mattered
09:11and so I don't think he's he's not going
09:14to average more points than Peterson or
09:17maybe DeBons or Caleb Wilson who's you
09:21know just putting up video game numbers
09:22and summerly he looks incredible and is
09:24going to play a lot for Chicago.
09:26I don't think he's going to be he's not
09:27going to be in the in the running from
09:28that standpoint but we were talking
09:30about it earlier you know like
09:33con canipple there's not a better
09:36statistical player than Cooper flag last
09:38year but the reason why he was in running
09:40for rookie of the year is because his team
09:42was better and he elevated that team
09:44from being a group that had a lot of
09:45talent and he kind of was the glue.
09:49Good numbers himself not as good as as
09:52Cooper no doubt yeah but but if we're
09:54just talking numbers he was he was not in
09:55his class yeah he shot the three ball
09:57very well but his impact on winning
09:59immediately was greater than flags and I
10:02think that's that's the argument that
10:04you could use for Yaxel in his rookie
10:06season of why he was the correct pick
10:08for Golden State yeah like as far as
10:10summer league goes for Yaxel maybe this
10:12feels like you know downplaying what it
10:15was in summer league but you get
10:17confirmation of what the Warriors said
10:19that he was and it doesn't immediately
10:21mean that he's going to be a star it
10:23just means okay like first test passed
10:26by Yaxel but it's also kind of expected
10:29at least the physical dominance because
10:30he's 23 and his body is fully developed
10:33unlike some other you know 19 20 year
10:35olds that he's playing against if you
10:37got the opposite and say he struggled
10:39and he wasn't out there then that that's
10:41alarms go off I totally just just him
10:44playing the way he played doesn't mean
10:46he's gonna be a superstar but it's like
10:47okay okay good first step now we see him
10:50do it consistently against dudes that are
10:52as big as strong as him right but this I
10:56don't think you can make a major sweeping
10:58you know judgment of it here but at least
11:01it wasn't okay he's clearly not ready
11:03because he clearly is ready to at least
11:05have an impact in some way shape or form
11:07yeah and I mean I agree with you like
11:10okay he went to summer league and he
11:12proved that you know he's one of the
11:14best players in summer league and he he
11:16you know took advantage of his size and
11:18skill okay now you're going to training
11:21camp it's coming soon go do it to
11:23Draymond yeah can you do it to Draymond
11:26right it's coming soon yeah the answer
11:27is probably not oh yeah and twice as hard
11:30as he did it in summer league but he's
11:34just gotta he's gotta prove to Draymond
11:37that he's good you guys get a lot of
11:40calls today about warrior fans just super
11:42excited for Yaxle yeah I think people are
11:45excited for Yaxle the main emotion you're
11:47hearing from warrior fans I think so yeah
11:49you're listening to 95 7 the game KGMZ FM
11:51HD1 San Francisco and Odyssey Sports
11:53Station always live on the free Odyssey app
11:56and now broadcasting from the Laughing
11:57Monk studios here's a guy compared him to
12:00and there I think Lendenborg will play
12:03bigger than this guy but if I told you
12:06right now he's gonna be Shane Battier oh is
12:10that good oh yeah yeah it was great yeah I
12:13had said earlier like okay I thought that
12:15his like ceiling might be Andre Iguodala
12:18okay in terms of being able to you know
12:21shoot and pass high IQ and defend and
12:24Iguodala would be obviously higher up on
12:26the pecking order than Shane Battier I
12:29think you could easily say but Shane
12:31Battier would be a great comp and a great
12:34player that if you could put in a Shane
12:36Battier onto this team over the next one
12:38two three years that absolutely would be
12:41helpful you remember Shane Battier winning
12:43a championship with the heat with the the
12:45big three in Miami but you remember I mean
12:47prime Shane Battier hell of a defender
12:50could knock down a three really smart
12:52cerebral player if Yaxle Shane Battier that's
12:55a great pick at 11 yeah I'd love I'd love
12:57for him to score a little more than
12:58Battier because Battier was kind of a
13:01three and D guy but you know I'm just
13:03like what they need is a player who can
13:08play and maybe not right away but they
13:09need a guy who can play 30 minutes and
13:11you're like this guy is good he's a good
13:14player and like he looks like he could be
13:17that I don't know what his ceiling is but
13:21I do think he looks like he's a starter in
13:23the NBA is he an all-star I don't know you
13:28know when when we talked about Harrison
13:30Barnes early in his career did we think he
13:32was going to be an all-star well he never
13:33was but he was a pretty good 10 12 year
13:36player I'd like to I'd like to think
13:39Lendeborg would have a little more of an
13:40impact than Harrison Barnes yeah I mean I
13:43think I'm just hoping that if this team is
13:46at full strength whether Yaxle's starting
13:48or not you know the the role that hasn't
13:51no one's really got an idea of how to
13:54figure out yet is what what Butler would
13:56do with the second unit when Steph was
13:59off the floor you could just throw three
14:01or four guys out there with them
14:02different combinations and he'd figure out
14:05how to get you through those four to six
14:08minute stretches without being completely
14:10pulverized and I think that might be
14:12where Yaxle has a chance at first number
14:15one because I think he can kind of he looks
14:17like you can kind of play with anybody
14:19you know he can shoot it he can play on
14:22the ball off the ball he defends
14:24decent but also too it's like then you
14:29can throw him up against the other team
14:31second unit it might be a little easier
14:33for him to kind of wade into those
14:34waters of the NBA so I think to me where
14:37I envision him impacting the game the most
14:39would be in the non-step minutes and
14:41that all changes of LeBron James chooses
14:43the Warriors sometime in the next
14:44hopefully 72 hours but you know for
14:47right now I think he's the brightest
14:49spot of this summer for Golden State
14:52it's not even close and yesterday was
14:54just kind of a cherry on top of how
14:57that's been feeling a batty a by the way
14:59just looking at his numbers he played
15:0140 minutes a game as a rookie in
15:03Memphis 39.7 he averaged 14 a night and
15:07then he would never reach those heights
15:08again but he was a two-time champ with
15:10Miami later in his career playing with
15:13the aforementioned LeBron James and Wade
15:15and Bosh and all the rest of it so kind
15:17of an interesting comp in that if you
15:19look at batty a he was a two-time all
15:22defensive player second team and he was
15:24in the running for DPOI he got votes in
15:27six straight years so if he actually could
15:29be that kind of defender I do think that
15:32his offensive game is projecting toward
15:34being better than what batty a's is because
15:36I do too Shane is he was a good score he
15:39shot 38 percent from three on three attempts
15:42a game so he was not a guy who actually
15:44was looked at to score very often and I
15:47think that Yaxel will be somebody who
15:48will be looked to offensively a lot more
15:51early and even deeper in his career the
15:53the name that I kept coming back to when
15:56doing like some pre-draft stuff on Yaxel
15:58it's it's not rookie and young Aaron Gordon
16:02but it's Denver Nuggets Aaron Gordon where
16:05you're not the focal point of the offense
16:07you're not even the second best offensive
16:09player but maybe no you're the third best
16:11offensive player and you do all of the
16:13little things at a really good level you
16:15play defense you rebound you hit the open
16:18three you can create at times maybe when
16:20Jokic and or Murray are off the bench you
16:23do a little bit more you have a game where
16:24you can score 35 and and win your team a
16:27basketball game and Aaron Gordon I mean we
16:30know him for the flashy dunks early in his
16:32career but doesn't have a lot of you know
16:34other accolades to his name but was one of
16:37the best pieces on a championship team
16:39like that that's the kind of player that
16:40I envision the actual potentially being
16:42able to reach I mean when you you know if
16:45you're gonna parse I do think Gordon's a
16:47better athlete than Lendeborg which is why
16:49it's more like later Gordon's career and
16:52and like as for Battier like I think
16:54Lendeborg is gonna score a lot more points
16:57in the paint than Battier ever did he
17:00bigger and stronger yeah definitely like a
17:02size bigger he's also showing like he can
17:05finish in a variety of ways we've already
17:07seen that he's got a good feel around the
17:08that's the thing I'm really interested to
17:10see is like he's got a knack for finding
17:13the opening around the rim and and finishing
17:17can he can he do that once the real game
17:20start you know the guys although he's got
17:22a great feel when these rookies you can
17:24tell if they just generally know their way
17:27around the rim like you can tell if you
17:29have the sense for it I you can you can
17:31tell whether or not he's gonna be able to
17:33do it against the really big bodies down
17:35low is a separate question but he has the
17:37feel you can art you can tell that
17:39immediately when you watch these young
17:40young players play I would agree with
17:42that I think it's interesting because
17:43he's also not somebody who has an
17:46extensive basketball background compared
17:48to again a lot of his peers I think
17:50that's probably why he spent six years in
17:52college it's because he focused on
17:54baseball until he was 14 he got played
17:57a ton of video games and didn't apply
17:59himself according to a profile written
18:01last week by Ron Kroychek so it's easy
18:03he's somebody that is he was a the 11th
18:05overall pick but he's very much a late
18:07bloomer and so I think it's interesting
18:09that he already has like a knack you can
18:11tell he's got good feet good hands so
18:14that stuff is it's there it's not like
18:16it's just gonna go away the moment he
18:17gets to the next level the question is
18:20every night when you're playing in Aaron
18:22Gordon are you going to be able to as
18:25you know probably an even or lesser
18:27athlete on most occasions still get
18:30what's gotten you to this point and I
18:33mean how do you go about doing it does
18:34he have the game to where if he's going
18:36up against somebody who is bigger and
18:37stronger than he is can he step out and
18:39you know get that player vulnerable at
18:41the three-point line can he take people
18:43off the dribble is he more than just a
18:46unidimensional score and I think that
18:47he has to your point and Stiney what
18:49you're saying about the feel and the
18:51feet and the knack I think that he will
18:53develop the ability to score in
18:55different ways based on who's guarding
18:57him yeah I mean look when Draymond
18:59Green came into the league they said he
19:00was a tweener they said he was too small
19:03to guard you know fours and threes were
19:06too quick for him on the perimeter and
19:09after two or three years of Draymond you
19:12realize that both of those so-called
19:14disadvantages became advantages for him
19:16that he could guard bigger guys because he
19:20was strong enough and he was quick
19:21enough and that also allowed him to
19:23defend guys on the perimeter because
19:26even though he was you know a four
19:29guarding fours that he was quick enough
19:31to go also guard threes so he kind of
19:33had it all and he turned what everybody
19:35thought was going to be a disadvantage
19:37for him into an advantage because people
19:40thought he might not be able to guard a
19:41position when in fact he came into the
19:43league and he could guard two right off
19:45the bat so if Lenderborg's a guy like
19:47that then he's gonna play I mean he's
19:50gonna play he has to I will say
19:52defensively in the summer league I
19:54haven't been that impressed well and
19:55that's why when you say a guy can guard
19:57one through five before he's ever come
19:59into the league that's a little
20:00premature I do think the defensive
20:02issues that maybe I've seen crop up in
20:05summer league are probably conditioning
20:07based and he's talked about that and
20:10he's you know he said he asked Steph one
20:11question and the one question he asked
20:13Steph was how do you condition yourself
20:15you're the most well-conditioned player in
20:17NBA history arguably how do you do that
20:19so I think he's aware that he's got to
20:20get better in that regard and hopefully
20:22that makes him a better defender but I
20:23haven't I thought I was gonna see a
20:26little bit more from him on the
20:27defensive end but it's just summer
20:28league it's not the end-all be-all or
20:30anywhere near it but that's one area
20:32I'm very impressed offensively and just
20:34like poise wise and feel for the game
20:36but I think the one thing maybe I've
20:38I've been a little surprised on the
20:39other extreme is the defense to this
20:41point but I mean I'm really yeah as
20:44far as maturity level I think he's got
20:47the maturity level to play right away
20:49oh yeah you know like he's you know
20:53whether it's Kamingo Wiseman Moody
20:55hell pods this guy's gonna be more
20:58equipped to play from day one than any
21:01of those guys and we can easily point
21:02to like the body and the physicalness
21:06of it and that's part of it but it's
21:07what you're talking about it's also like
21:09the mindset and I think for me it's why
21:12I was so fond of Keaton Wagler the the
21:15point guard from Illinois who went to
21:17the Clippers I think at number five
21:18overall one of the most important
21:20skill sets for me in young players is
21:23just a feel for the game and I think
21:25it's kind of surprising that Lendeborg
21:26has it because as Evan was talking
21:28about he's relatively right he's 23
21:30years old he's old for a rookie but
21:31he's relatively young in his NBA life
21:33or his basketball life because he
21:35hasn't played a ton growing up right
21:38the same was true for Kamingo didn't
21:39play a lot as a kid because basketball
21:41wasn't really an option for him growing
21:43up he's relatively young in his
21:45basketball life he's old for a rookie
21:48but he has a feel that you just can't
21:51teach right and there's not a ton of
21:52dudes that have it that you can get a
21:54number 11 overall and he definitely has
21:56it yeah what do you guys got today the
21:58championship winning coach of the
22:00summer league Khalid Robinson nice
22:04charm you know he came on right before
22:05yeah yeah and that's how that works you
22:07know because you got you talk to him
22:09and so then they go out there and then
22:11and then they win the summer league
22:12perform yeah just giving him some
22:14tips you know hey yeah sure I want to
22:16think about Yaxi you know going this
22:17way yeah yeah yeah play Yaxi a lot
22:22yeah he's gonna be on the Lende
22:23boards you know what I mean and I
22:25heard that earlier I was like you know
22:26what that's awesome I wish you wouldn't
22:27have said it because I definitely would
22:29have stolen it but now that you've said
22:30it twice in including in the crossover
22:32it's yours we just had to claim it
22:34Lende boards it's pretty good and I
22:36like that better than triple axel
22:38when he hits a three like the whole
22:40idea will be used
22:42action no no no did you think of
22:45that one no I was on the test someone
22:46threw it in there I mean I would have
22:48taken it not bad no I mean and that's
22:50always a stiny phrase like well we got
22:52action so I mean we don't have the
22:55action of action when do we get action
22:58from LeBron you guys make a prediction
23:01as to when what day is it's gonna
23:03happen this week right right okay I
23:07right it sounds like you're begging
23:08it has to I am but I also I also do
23:12think it's gonna happen this week well
23:14we thought it people were saying
23:15happened last week and the week I would
23:17say Thursday at Patrick Beverly said
23:18today right he did okay send him an
23:22emoji that said STF you oh wow okay
23:25yeah they're yeah there's really the
23:27latest I'll lock it in everybody's got to
23:28stop predicting and then he'll do it
23:30well he's gonna do it Thursday may as
23:32well do it in the morning because if he
23:34doesn't at night are you actually here
23:36on Thursday I'm here Thursday oh yeah
23:37okay and then you're gone for like
23:39Friday and on whole week and in a week
23:41he's gonna call in Friday if LeBron uh
23:43so I heard that earlier and he's like
23:45there's no way I'm calling in probably
23:47not and you took a shot at goo he caught
23:49a stray and he didn't need to what would
23:51be nine and a half back no but uh like
23:54if goo was off and the news broke then
23:57he would call in but you won't no goo like
23:59he called into your show when the last
24:01news happened this is one of those things
24:02where it's like goo wants to be here
24:06when big stuff happens yeah and I like to
24:10be here when big things happen but if I'm
24:13not it's no harm no foul that's all on 95.7
24:17the game
