00:00I have a new favorite giant, and I'm not ashamed to say it.
00:04His name is Raphael Devers.
00:06Big Butt Devers.
00:07Now, back to Stiney and Guru on 95.7 The Game.
00:11All right, it's time for the crossover brought to you by Bay Alarm.
00:14Rest easy.
00:15We've got you covered.
00:16Bayalarm.com.
00:17Let's welcome in Willard and Dibbs.
00:19It was a very thankful day yesterday.
00:21Sports-wise in the Bay, the Warriors have a new player, Yaxel Lendeborg,
00:25and Buster Posey met the media.
00:29Thoughts?
00:30I mean, I've been on Yaxel going back to probably February,
00:34and I feel as if I was first.
00:36It doesn't really matter because as everyone was clamoring.
00:39I'm going to give you that.
00:39I'm going to give you that.
00:40Like Larry Beal, who I love.
00:42I am Larry.
00:43Aloha means goodbye.
00:44He put out a video of how much he's been wanting Yaxel,
00:47and then as the pickets made, he's pumping his fist,
00:50and he's celebrating, and Carter Chickering,
00:52and even Matt Steinmetz himself rushing to the Yaxel train.
00:56I don't need credit for being first at all.
01:00I'm just happy that they picked a guy who I think actually fits.
01:04Sure you do.
01:05That's why you brought it up.
01:07I brought it up to say I don't need credit.
01:09That's why you brought it up, but I'm going to give you the credit.
01:11I felt guilty yesterday.
01:12I had a friend slash listener hit me on Instagram and goes,
01:17great call on Yaxel.
01:19And I was like, oh.
01:21I'll take it.
01:22I'll take it.
01:22I was like, yeah, pretty good, huh?
01:24You nailed it.
01:25We nailed it.
01:26Other than your calci of Braden Burry's going at 11.
01:29That was a prediction.
01:30Yeah.
01:31It is a prediction market.
01:33Well, it was one off.
01:33Yeah.
01:33Yeah.
01:34No, and I think what would have been super interesting is if the Bucs
01:37didn't take Burry's, what would the Warriors have done?
01:40What did you make of that?
01:41Whatever you call the video.
01:42I said order extra large, not a large, between Dunleavy and Laco.
01:47It's mostly a nothing burger, but it's not a complete nothing burger
01:51because the owner is in there, like, demonstratively doing something.
01:57Order the extra large.
01:59Like, let the GM make the pick.
02:01Let him make the pick.
02:03And if you're arguing about when he makes the pick or when he submits the card,
02:08have a seat, Joe.
02:09Like, let the man make a lottery pick.
02:11I just thought that he injected himself in a moment where everything now
02:16goes viral.
02:17And he had to talk about his owner instead of the pick.
02:19Right.
02:20Which I think is just too bad.
02:21Like, it's just, it probably happens all the time.
02:25That's Myers.
02:26I mean, people are, I would hope people are screaming at each other in a war room.
02:30I hope.
02:31You know, I mean, I know sometimes they text Stiney and go,
02:35we're in alignment, but sometimes they probably stand on business and argue.
02:40And so that's, I think it's totally fine.
02:43I don't think there's anything to it at all.
02:45Social media have fun with it.
02:46And I actually believe Dunleavy's explanation.
02:49Don't you?
02:49I actually do too.
02:50Yeah, that Laker was just getting a little.
02:52I got antsy.
02:53Yeah.
02:54A little anxiety.
02:55If you saw, like, all the clips of the war rooms,
02:58there was something that happened in Denver's too that was interesting
03:01where their owner was doing the shrugged shoulders,
03:05talking to the GM in front of everybody.
03:07And, you know, I had a buddy I went to college with who's a Nuggets fan.
03:12And he's like, what was this all about with Cronky?
03:15And I'm like, yeah, I don't know.
03:17Cronky.
03:17Man, he's got deep pockets.
03:19I mean, what are these dudes?
03:20Yeah.
03:20But can I, what are these dudes doing in there?
03:24They're the owners.
03:25So there were a lot of people in the Warriors' war room.
03:29I was looking for Drayvon, yeah.
03:31I mean.
03:32If you're aligned, then just go in and have a seat and chill.
03:36Because if you're aligned, then you're all aligned in that we're taking
03:40Yaxel Lendenborg.
03:41Okay, you're going to take him.
03:43You're on the clock.
03:44And let Mike spell his name correctly.
03:46And I don't even know if you submit a card anymore or if you, like,
03:49phoned it in or take a picture.
03:50But let the GM have the moment.
03:53That was my only thought.
03:54It's not a big deal.
03:55But if you're right, then, Willard, there might have been a little,
03:57like, there was some animation in Tim Calcami.
04:00I mean, but Dunleavy's also not wrong.
04:02Like, we've got five minutes.
04:04Let the phone ring.
04:06Maybe somebody was going to offer you Trey Murphy for the pick straight up.
04:09I don't know.
04:10Let the phone ring.
04:11Turn it in in time.
04:14What'd you think of, and this really, I'll just play it straight.
04:20What'd you think of Calcami's line in his story where he had the Warriors had
04:28Boozer as right now the best player, right now,
04:32and then a tie between Lendenborg and Burry's for the next best player right now?
04:40I heard you guys talk about this earlier.
04:42I thought it was an interesting conversation.
04:44He thought I got mad, and I didn't.
04:45Calcami, you did a little.
04:46I don't know if you, I don't, Lowe, you tell us.
04:49Did you take it, did you take it that way right when he first said it?
04:54Yeah, like, if they had won, they would have picked Lenden.
04:57See, no, I didn't take it that way.
04:59That's why I called down.
05:00I was like, ooh, come on.
05:01Maybe I'm wrong.
05:02I don't know.
05:02You know, but, like, I didn't take it as we think these,
05:06because you guys had a call right after it.
05:08He was hot.
05:09He was ridiculous.
05:10You know, and I'm like, I don't think that's, that's not what they meant,
05:14and you got accused of caping up for Calcami.
05:18I'm like, oh, man, we've just got a big heart.
05:20Now that, unlike the Giants situation, has been blown out of proportion,
05:25because I do think what they meant was, like, who's ready to walk into a lineup
05:31right now in this month of the gym?
05:33And, Dibbs, if you were, go ahead.
05:35Well, I was just going to say it, especially because he mentioned Boozer,
05:39because conventional wisdom is Boozer is the most pro-ready,
05:43even of the four guys in that draft.
05:47So.
05:48Even though he's a freshman, and you watch him play at Duke,
05:51and he looks like a grown man.
05:53He looks like his dad.
05:54I mean, remember Carlos Boozer and how he was very authoritative down on the block,
05:58and, you know, you look at his son, and at Duke, there was nobody who could really contain him down
06:04there,
06:04and he's got a decent shot, not a great one,
06:06but I do think that the caller had an interesting point of,
06:09if the Warriors were drafting number one overall,
06:12would they take Boozer over DeBunza or Peterson?
06:16That's a great question.
06:18I've got to think, no.
06:20Mine is, hell no.
06:21But if you follow Dibley's premise, it would mean, well, they're not doing everything for Steph.
06:28If they're taking Carlos Boozer, I'm sorry, if they're taking DeBunza over Boozer.
06:34I do think that Peterson would be the second most ready,
06:37and, you know, his year was weird because he had the cramping,
06:40and he was coming off of doing a lot of creatine to get muscular.
06:44Mine's been Donovan Mitchell, Dibbs.
06:46I mean, he, and you watch his highlights, and it's like him dunking on everybody.
06:49He's just a monster, but I think DeBunza has, obviously, the most upside,
06:54but, you know, if you're picking at one and you're trying to help Steph,
06:58I don't know what you would have done.
07:01Am I the only one that we all have kids here,
07:03and I've said this before every draft day, for every draft,
07:07I just put myself up there with my parents, like, Daryl Johnson.
07:11That's emotional, man.
07:13And Stani and I, we were texting last night.
07:15I don't think the moms got to talk a lot.
07:17I didn't like it.
07:18Let moms go first.
07:19Some of them didn't talk at all.
07:21Pop, how do we get that?
07:23Let moms get in there.
07:24Just me.
07:26I don't know, dude.
07:27They've already got Mother's Day.
07:28We spent the whole week last week talking about how Father's Day just dies.
07:33No, I'm kidding.
07:33You don't want to hear that.
07:35I love to hear that.
07:36I'm looking at it different now.
07:38It is funny how you and I think of things differently
07:40because I swear to God, let me tell you what I thought last night
07:44as I'm watching all these young men who are 19.
07:47They're like kids.
07:48And I'm thinking to myself, man, we don't, we, we,
07:53we don't get how much these guys and their parents have sacrificed.
07:58Like we really don't.
08:00And so it's funny, goo.
08:02When I'm looking at Waggler, I'm saying, I'm not putting myself there.
08:07I'm saying you could have never been there
08:10because you weren't willing to pay the price like these guys.
08:15Like I get it.
08:16They're super talented.
08:18But man, up there with those parents and they,
08:23like they, they figured out a lot of them at a relatively early age
08:27that the only way they could get there is by dedicating their entire life to it.
08:32And they've done it.
08:33And their parents helped them.
08:34And it was, it's pretty cool, really.
08:37I think it's a fun nature nurture conversation, actually.
08:40It's something that the lovely Christy and I have sort of playfully argued about.
08:44My golf partner.
08:45Well, and it's actually on that subject.
08:48Because I have a 19-year-old son who is a very good player.
08:51And I think he's going to play at the junior collegiate level here this fall.
08:57He's like a scratch.
08:58But he has also taken his time getting in and out of high school
09:04and took a gap year.
09:05And so he plays constantly.
09:08And so as she's learning the game, there's this thought of like,
09:11how good could you be if you just had every day to go play?
09:18And I'm kind of, I lean more into the natural gifts of the whole thing.
09:22And maybe that's because I've played golf on and off for 30 years.
09:26And I'm like, I could never be as good as him.
09:29It does not matter how often I played.
09:32I could be better than I am, but I couldn't be that good.
09:34And I think that's kind of what you're talking about.
09:38Like there's a sacrifice, but there's also just natural gifts.
09:41Right.
09:42And that's where you go to the Boozer kid where dad was a 14-year NBA player.
09:48And I was just looking at his stats.
09:49And the kids were born in 07.
09:52And that was his fifth year in the association.
09:54That's where they beat the Warriors, and we believe.
09:57In 07.
09:57Yeah.
09:58Carlos Boozer.
09:58He was an all-star.
10:00He was third-team all-NBA.
10:02And he went on to play eight more years.
10:05So you want to talk about shouting out the mom.
10:07So the mom has the twins.
10:09And Carlos is out there playing all 82 for eight more years.
10:13And so Mama Boozer is raising a couple of twins.
10:17And so nature versus nurture, yes.
10:19Nature, your dad's an NBA player.
10:22Your dad's a power forward.
10:23And so the one kid's a power forward.
10:25And his little brother, who's, I think, a minute younger, he's a point guard.
10:30But he's only like 6'3 or 6'4.
10:32I mean, the answer's both.
10:33We've all seen the most talented people in the world go nowhere.
10:37Yeah.
10:37Because they don't have the emotional maturity or they just don't have the wherewithal to do it.
10:43So the answer's always both.
10:44For sure.
10:45Well, you're listening to 95.7 The Game.
10:48KGMZ FM and HD1 San Francisco and Odyssey Sports Station.
10:51Always live on the free Odyssey app.
10:53Now broadcasting from the Laughing Monk Studios.
10:55I know you guys got on after Posey yesterday.
10:58We didn't.
10:59So you guys have obviously talked about it.
11:05I mean, there's a lot of things I don't quite understand.
11:11I think the natural question is, why did he even do it?
11:16And then, what was he doing?
11:19Yeah, I'm only going to answer soccer questions today.
11:22Oh, look at you.
11:23I'm only going to answer soccer questions.
11:25So maybe you can, you know, have a soccer question.
11:28If not, we're going to shut this whole thing down.
11:30Both teams played hard.
11:33Go ahead.
11:34I can't.
11:35We talked about it, man.
11:37I can't understand.
11:40Well, what do you think?
11:41Do you think they made him go out?
11:43Somebody?
11:43I don't know if they made him.
11:45I think that they must have felt like we've got to have some transparency here.
11:52Because, you know who wrote a cool brief article about it was Alex Pavlovich, who sort of indicated that the
11:58Giants are really craving normalcy.
12:01They want to get back to normal.
12:03And that struck me as what I think they were attempting to do.
12:06You know, if we just go address this, same thing.
12:09Rafi, will you welcome the media to your locker and just say some things, and then we can get back
12:14to normal.
12:14But now you're in Mars.
12:16You're so far from normal.
12:17Right, I don't think you can just talk and automatically have it go back to normal.
12:22And the reason it's not normal is on you.
12:24It's not on anybody else.
12:26And so I think that they wanted to have the look of transparency, but it clearly made the Pride Night
12:33stuff worse by just putting up a total brick wall.
12:37And then what swept under the rug is his answers to the, quote, baseball stuff that they wanted to have
12:44asked were very unsatisfying as well.
12:47He had no answers.
12:48And I'm like, that's where, as a president of baseball operations, and this is where I thought his inexperience showed
12:54yesterday,
12:55you have to be able to speak to these things in a way that at least let your fans know
13:01you see what the problems are,
13:04and you are efforting fixing them.
13:06But when you say, hey, what is the team struggling with?
13:10Why can't you get going?
13:12Why, why, why, why?
13:13And you keep looking at every reporter and going, I don't have an answer for you.
13:16And I got mad at Bowmail last year when he kept saying that at every turn.
13:19Somebody better have some answers.
13:21When he's like, baseball's quirky, could turn around any minute.
13:24I'm like, is that the plan?
13:26Is the San Francisco Giants' plan to sit in the corner and hope?
13:30Like, that's not it.
13:32You're the president.
13:33You have to have a plan.
13:34I'm a Baystonian, born and raised here.
13:37I'm not to sit here in front like I'm the biggest Giant fan, but I've had the blessing to work
13:41in corporate environments
13:43and work around some successful, very articulate people.
13:47And I've seen situations that are dire, and I've seen people go in front of a microphone
13:53and attempt to make it better with passion, grace, elegance, sorrow.
14:03Buster had none of that yesterday.
14:05And for Stiney to say or just bring up, they, that's a problem to me.
14:11They, I think Buster did that on his own, thinking, you know what, I can get through this.
14:15And then I love Aaron Killian and the rest of the reporters that were like, you're not going to answer
14:20this.
14:20I just was offended, like, what about I'm sorry for anybody out there that's offended.
14:26That wasn't our intent.
14:28We're working on it.
14:29Yeah, it was for him to say, I'm not going to answer.
14:32It was almost like you're just poo-pooing the whole pride movement.
14:38Like, why did you call this?
14:41You're making it worse.
14:42That was my thing yesterday in real time.
14:43Like, why would you go out there and do this at all when you're not going to answer the questions
14:50about,
14:50it was really a two-pronged thing.
14:52Like, what's up with Rafi?
14:54Well, I haven't talked to him.
14:56What?
14:56And the other one was Pride Night.
14:58What do you think of the fiasco?
14:59I'm not taking those questions.
15:00So why are you even out here?
15:02If you haven't talked to Rafi and you're not going to answer the Pride Night questions,
15:07which is top of mind for not only us here in the Bay Area, but it's been, as Mark said,
15:12a nationwide story now.
15:14You've got the Department of Justice involved, and you're going to come out and do a presser and not address
15:19it.
15:19I still don't understand what the win was for Buster and the organization.
15:24And I know Mike Kruko suggested that the Department of Justice thing is maybe, quote-unquote, a little bit, why?
15:30You could have used that!
15:31Then just say it.
15:32You could have used that easy!
15:33Yeah, just say there's an ongoing investigation, and so therefore it's probably best for us to not get into this
15:39right now.
15:40That would have been more satisfying.
15:42I don't know if I really buy it.
15:43I don't actually think there would be.
15:44The PR guy had to come to his defense.
15:46There isn't an investigation.
15:49This administration announces all kinds of fakakta stuff.
15:52There's no investigation because there was no decision made.
15:56The reflecting pool's been vandalized.
15:58You can't have discrimination without them.
16:01Nobody was punished.
16:02They didn't do anything.
16:03All baseball said was, so just so you know, you're not supposed to write on your caps.
16:08But discrimination, nothing happened.
16:10Nobody was suspended.
16:11Nobody was fined.
16:12Nobody was anything.
16:13So what are you investigating?
16:14And how much are they alienating their fans?
16:17The Giants with this and the whole Devers.
16:20Go to Willie Mays Plaza last night and watch all the people who had signs and protests and all kinds
16:26of things going on.
16:27Oh, I missed that.
16:28Oh, yeah.
16:28Oh, yeah.
16:28There's plenty of pissed off people.
16:31That's what, that's what, see, that's another part of this that, you know, no one wants to address.
16:35Because we slip slide into the political debate or the social debate about it.
16:40And you can't escape that if you're Buster, you just, you pissed off a lot of your city.
16:48You can't, like, that has nothing to do with that.
16:50No, that's heavy.
16:51And you're the president.
16:52So, like, you are, you're an entertainment entity in San Francisco and you upset a lot of people.
16:58What if he would have come out and said, essentially, what the letter said to Hawley, which was, we didn't
17:08communicate.
17:08Like, what if he would have come out and said, yeah, I'm going to talk about, we, you know, internally,
17:12I got to be better.
17:14These things were in black and white.
17:17You know, I, we, I, I didn't send out the right messaging.
17:20I didn't make sure everybody knew.
17:22And so that led to the confusion.
17:24And, you know, I'll take the responsibility for that.
17:29And then kind of avoided, then kind of avoided the other stuff.
17:34They're not going to talk about it?
17:35You know what I mean?
17:37That might have just been better.
17:39It's like, I don't want to talk about the specifics, but we could have handled it better.
17:43Absolutely.
17:44Absolutely.
17:45Man, it would have been better.
17:46That would have took, I mean, that's all I was looking for.
17:49Yeah, it would have taken some of the sting out of it.
17:50And I just can't help but wonder, like, what the organization in totality upstairs, what they actually think about Pride
17:59Night.
17:59And I'm sure that if you talk about four pitchers who put a scripture on the hat, or I guess
18:04three put the scripture and one didn't wear the hat,
18:06what percentage of people in the organization are aligned with that, with that belief?
18:12Because if you go back to when gay marriage was legalized, it was running about 50-50 nationwide.
18:18So I know we're in our own liberal bubble here, and I'm probably never going to leave because of that
18:23reason.
18:23But I wonder, like, what it's like in the front office.
18:27Well, it's more than four of them.
18:30Right.
18:30I'm rather confident.
18:32But I also don't want to paint with a broad brush.
18:34Just because you are raised Christian doesn't mean that you see, you know, or interpret the Bible or any other.
18:41Like, I mean, I don't, you know what I mean?
18:43You got, it feels like half the team wears those Jesus One t-shirts, but that doesn't mean that you
18:49think X, Y, Z about Pride Night.
18:52So I don't know.
18:54But, yeah, I'm rather confident that those four guys were not necessarily on an island.
18:59I feel pretty confident about that.
19:02And you said this might be one of the worst Giants seasons for you.
19:07There's a lot of, this is the Eldridge walk-off granny, which was good.
19:12Yep.
19:13The Devers fiasco, which I'm calling it, and his audacity to say the media blows things out of proportion.
19:18I thought that was, I didn't like that.
19:21And then this part with Pride, part two, that's just not a good look.
19:25And can you get those fans back that you pissed off?
19:29Well, you're not hurting.
19:30Seats are not empty.
19:31Seats, but man.
19:32Building's still full last night.
19:34Building's still full.
19:35I'm, I'm, I'm intrigued by Devers.
19:39I bet you are.
19:40Soccer.
19:41I mean.
19:43What intrigues you?
19:44I just, I, there's something about a guy who disdains the media, who means it, that I do have respect
19:51for.
19:52Like, he does not want to talk, he just wants to play baseball and be left alone.
19:57And that is, in some ways, you're right.
20:00And by the way, I'm not going to act like, boy, if I were an athlete or a coach, yeah,
20:07we can be pretty annoying.
20:09We can be pretty annoying.
20:10The same way when some of them strike out all the, that's annoying.
20:14Like, our performance, the whole thing is set up for frustration.
20:19But don't act like we came and knocked on your door.
20:21We act like we knocked on your door because you were acting a fool.
20:23Right, but like, if you don't want to talk to the media, like, this is interesting because there are rules
20:29about availability.
20:31There aren't rules about who's available.
20:34But I do want to let everybody know that when one guy, especially a team leader, steps up and says,
20:41I'm going to be one of the not ever available people.
20:43Then all of that person's issues spill to the people who are going to be available.
20:48And that does cause problems.
20:50I know this.
20:51Like, I've watched this.
20:52I've heard this.
20:54So the Logan Webbs and the Matt Chapmans get to answer all the Rafi Devers questions.
20:58They get to answer all the Pride Night questions.
21:01And that wears on them.
21:03So if you are one who's like, you guys are just mad because Rafi won't talk to the media.
21:09No, but I can argue that if you'll never talk to the media, you're being a bad teammate.
21:15Selfish.
21:16Because now you've got to pick up.
21:17You're also never going to get any favors done for you.
21:19Correct.
21:20You're just not.
21:22And I mean, he, like, I was just thinking, okay, what do we got here?
21:29Do we have a John Taylor?
21:31Do we have a Steve Carlton?
21:33Like, Steve Carlton never talked to the media.
21:35He wouldn't even go up to him.
21:36Right, but that was the 70s where, you know.
21:38But John Taylor was pretty, even Barry Bonds didn't talk a lot, right?
21:44But John was a sweetheart, right?
21:46But he never, like, he just, the writers knew not to even go up to him.
21:51But some people, he just did not want to talk.
21:54JT.
21:54Period.
21:55I feel like he was quiet at family dinner.
21:57Right?
21:58I'm just, I am intrigued by those guys.
22:01Because I, I think, I think most pro athletes love to say they hate the media, but they
22:07thrive on the attention and they really do like the attention.
22:11But I do think Devers is kind of the real deal where he just doesn't want to deal with
22:16this.
22:16Like when Rafi is 37, he's not going to suddenly start being, because how many athletes have
22:21you watched do this?
22:23They're, they're, they're prickly with everyone.
22:25And then they turn 35.
22:27Oh, come on now.
22:28You see it all the time.
22:29They smell the post-retirement business opportunity.
22:34And then they get nice.
22:35And they try to repair that relationship.
22:38And some of it do it very successfully.
22:40Kobe was brilliant at it.
22:42Barry Lightweight tried it.
22:44Yeah.
22:44Yep.
22:45It's brilliant.
22:46But I'm with you.
22:48I think Rafi's going to be like, and you all can have a nice life.
22:52But he still went unchecked.
22:53I know you said you went in there and apologized.
22:55I'm not standing.
22:56He's like, Ooh, you got to take him at his word.
22:58But the way it was on you to go apologize, it went unchecked to me.
23:02Completely.
23:03That don't sit well with me.
23:04And, you know, even Tony Vitello saying, no, I didn't feel any disrespect and all the
23:08rest of it.
23:08And, you know, the idea that the media blew it out of proportion.
23:12When you, you wave, you finger wag, and then you get mad, and then you scream in the
23:17helmet, and then you blow off the assistant coach.
23:19Like, that was four different things.
23:21All he would have had to do is stand in his locker and say, heat of the moment, competitive
23:26athlete, my leg is feeling good.
23:28And, you know, I probably shouldn't have done that.
23:30I regret it.
23:31Story over.
23:32And when they asked Buster, is he in the lineup?
23:33I was like, oh, my God, I'm waiting on that.
23:36Yeah, thank you.
23:37I'll go off.
23:37Is anyone else fascinated by Vitello?
23:40This cat goes through this whole thing and comes out to the dugout ready for, he knows
23:46what's coming.
23:47And he's like, you know what I'm going to do?
23:49I'm going to quote the town.
23:51This is the moment.
23:52And I'm like, oh, my God, that's where you went?
23:57He decided to quote the town.
24:00Ben Affleck.
24:00And I'm just like, it's so out of the box that to me, it's, I can't even criticize it.
24:07I'm fascinated by the way his brain works in these moments.
24:10Marhan started something in the dugout, and now I was watching Netflix, this show called
24:16The Bear.
24:18Don't forget, you have a golf lesson.
24:21I was watching The Bear.
24:22You have a golf lesson you need to get to.
24:24Everybody, you can't allow what you're watching.
24:25But anyway, all right, I'm going to see Christy, and we're about to go.
24:29Okay, you better have fun.
24:30Send some videos.
24:31Okay.
24:31Coach is great.
24:33Doug is great.
24:34Yep.
24:34Yep.
