Educating your child about sexuality and sexual health is a very important part of parenting which most Indian parents miss. Pulkit Sharma, a clinical psychologist, psychoanalytic therapist, spiritual counselor and author based in Pondicherry, India explains why it is crucial to talk to your growing child about sexuality in a candid manner.

This is an excerpt from an interview recorded in 2013 in which Pulkit Sharma spoke to Jagran Media team about the mental and sexual health issues confronting the Indian society. 00:01While talking to your teenager about sex, it is firstly very important that you
00:06overcome your own inhibition with sex. Because if you end up giving such a
00:14message to your teenager that sex is wrong, bad or forbidden, they will become
00:19extremely close and would never confide in you again. What you should instead
00:25tell them is that it is a normal biological and psychological process and
00:31that you are there to address their concerns and queries in a very open and
00:36empathic manner. If you do this then the child will develop trust in you and will
00:42surely come up with their queries and issues related to sexuality.
