00:00I have home run derby. I did not like the new format, but it's kind of like the old format,
00:05which is kind of like the old TV show on the on classic sports.
00:08They'll just change it again next year, which I don't like that either.
00:11I don't like I'm a NASCAR fan. And what they've done with the all-star race is appalling.
00:16Speaking of appalling, Nick Wilson used that word.
00:21A lot of operative words today. You'll find out more coming up at seven o'clock.
00:24But Nick Wilson used that word to describe Jonathan Peterlin's thoughts
00:29on the way the rest of Major League Baseball sees the Guardians.
00:34If we're going to actually have this team win a postseason series or even have a deep postseason run,
00:38you're going to have to do better than 24th in slugging.
00:41I mean, they haven't been doing better than 24th in slugging,
00:44and they've won postseason series the last couple of years.
00:47Yeah, but this is why no one takes them seriously.
00:49There's a difference between winning postseason series
00:53and then people acting like there's a juggernaut that's waiting to pounce.
00:56And this team is not a juggernaut waiting to pounce right now.
00:58It depends on what you qualify as why people don't take them seriously.
01:02I think the pitching is really good.
01:03I love the starting pitching at certain points, by the way.
01:06There's parts of the bullpen I enjoy.
01:08I think the offense is just too awful right now.
01:11I'm ready to lock it in.
01:12What exactly are you going to lock it in?
01:14I'm ready to lock it in because I understand.
01:16Listen, I'm not here to say that you're wrong.
01:18The first 90 to 92, what is it, 95?
01:2197, I think, is what we're at now.
01:2397 games.
01:24The offense has not been consistently good.
01:26We are in agreement here.
01:27What I'm looking at is the upside of this offense with a healthy hosie,
01:32Kwon hitting, Bazzana continuing to, it's going to be an ebb and flow.
01:36He's a rookie, but Bazzana continuing to actually be playable,
01:41Rokio being really good, and DeLauder really being a good player as well.
01:45I will tell you, by the end of the regular season,
01:48I expect them in most, not all, most major categories to be top 20.
01:54He said he was appalled by what Jonathan had said about nobody taking the Guardian seriously.
02:00Man, they would have to go on a tear right now.
02:01Now, just to update the numbers, right now, they are 29th in on-base plus slugging.
02:07In slugging, they're 30th, so they're dead last.
02:10They're 23rd in on-base percentage because they do draw walks.
02:13But for them to go from 29th, 30th to 20, Jose Ramirez would have to be the best player in
02:22baseball.
02:23Yeah, I would love some clarification from Nick on, so there's 65 games left.
02:28Does he mean top 20 over the final 65, or does he mean they're going to pull it up?
02:33Yeah, I think it's-
02:33It's got to be top 20 over the final 65 because statistically it doesn't look possible.
02:38You can, you know, had they only been 40 games into the season, yeah, maybe, but you're over.
02:43You'd have to have some of the players from the other teams go up to bat without arms
02:46to be able to get up to 20 after that many games.
02:51Leave names and news out of it, please.
02:53All right, so what's interesting-
02:55Coming in hot's at 945 on Friday.
02:57What's interesting about their discussion, it's kind of a role reversal in a lot of ways.
03:02Like, Nick, during the Cavs season, and the Cavs, every number I threw out there,
03:07the Cavs were considered a contender to get to the NBA Finals.
03:12Now we know what happened, we know in the end, Nick ended up being right.
03:16They had no shot to get to the NBA Finals because they got swept.
03:18There was only one champion, so I guess it was kind of easy to end up being right?
03:22There's only four teams that get to the NBA, you know, Eastern and Western Conference Finals,
03:26but he had zero faith.
03:28Like, he dogged the Cavs the entire last 30 games, even though the Cavs were one of the
03:33better teams in the NBA the last 30 games of the regular season, and then ended up ultimately
03:37in the Final Four.
03:38And his whole point was, nobody takes the Cavs seriously.
03:42Now, Jonathan says that about the Guardians.
03:45Nobody takes them seriously in the playoffs because how do you make a run when your offense
03:51is one of the worst in baseball?
03:53And yeah, they're getting reinforcements.
03:55Jose Ramirez is obviously going to be relied upon to be big.
03:58But even with Jose, does the rest of baseball take them seriously to the way that maybe Nick
04:06is hoping that they will?
04:07So I think it's interesting, and I think it's unfortunate that, yeah, we could say this every
04:14year with the Guardians.
04:14We could say, on paper, put them next to the Yankees, put them next to the Dodgers, and
04:22we're never going to be taking all that seriously.
04:24Obviously, but that's not going to change my hope that when we get in the playoffs, that
04:29there could be some magical run.
04:31I think it's hard to admit this because I do have a great deal of respect for their organization,
04:35and I know you do too.
04:38One, I think you're right.
04:39I hate to turn this into a great big agreement fest.
04:42I think your diagnosis of that is dead on.
04:45I mean, Nick, there was nothing the Cavs could do last year to seem to bring Nick across the
04:50aisle.
04:50Well, when it comes to the Guardians, I don't think that Jonathan is that inflexible, but
04:59I also think that Jonathan, I have to admit he has a point.
05:03I don't think the Yankees lineup, well, the Yankees lineup's a bad example.
05:06I go back to two years ago in the ALCS.
05:08It's like, yeah, you lost the ALCS.
05:11Look at their lineup compared to ours.
05:12It was a great season by you guys, and I hate to say it.
05:17Guardians fans are tired of hearing, it was a great season.
05:21No, I think there's some people who are like, hey, let's punch it in.
05:24Let's go.
05:24It's been 78 years.
05:26Let's get going with this.
05:27When it comes to the Dodgers, like the Dodgers have a formidable lineup that makes a lot of
05:32people nervous.
05:32It's like, hey, you got to mind your P's and Q's.
05:35When it comes to the Guardians, and I think the Guardians are the best of the rest.
05:38When it comes to the Guardians, I don't think a lot of lineups are terrified.
05:42I think because right now we are in a transition.
05:46This is what makes them a fun team, is that we are not supposed to be a very competitive
05:51group.
05:51You see the youth movement that's going on here.
05:54You're seeing some of the things that are there.
05:55We've already admitted that, yeah, maybe part of it is the division.
05:59Okay.
05:59But they're not supposed to be a team that's incredibly competitive right now.
06:04They're supposed to be competitive in a couple of years.
06:06Like, Parker Messick being an All-Star here was not supposed to happen.
06:10Travis Bozana being an All-Star, not even starting day one on opening day, was not supposed
06:16to happen.
06:17So I think a lot of us feel they're ahead of schedule.
06:19That doesn't mean that everybody's quaking in their boots before they take on the Guardians
06:24this year in the postseason.
06:25I'd love for it to happen, and maybe it will be like that, like the 90s Indians were years
06:30ago.
06:30But there's going to have to be a couple of years.
06:32So I hate that Jonathan said an inconvenient truth, but I think Jonathan told us the truth
06:39there.
06:39And look, I...
06:40Now, you're talking about a bigger problem with how people take postseason sports, which
06:44I think I agree with you, but I'm just looking at what they said and going, well...
06:48When you think about how the baseball and basketball regular seasons consume how many months out
06:55of 12?
06:55And I know there's some bleed over there, but that's the day in and day out of what made
07:02us really love sports.
07:04It's just now so quickly being dismissed.
07:08And look, part of it is, yeah, the Knicks just won the championship, and in the regular
07:12season, their fans hated them for certain months of the year, right?
07:15Maybe that's the love-hate thing that we all have anyway with our teams.
07:20But the more and more we get into the ring culture part of all this, or the only thing
07:25that matters is championships.
07:27I think you alienate.
07:29You have a way...
07:30I totally agree.
07:31...to alienate what made us fall in love.
07:34The first baseball game I went to was not a postseason game.
07:37It was a regular season game against the Royals.
07:40I'll never forget it.
07:41But now, we're just like, these games don't matter.
07:44None of them matter.
07:45It's done something weird to this show in particular.
07:47I don't know if it's with every show, but I think it's done something very weird with this
07:50show in particular.
07:51Why'd he call in?
07:53Who?
07:54Anthony Bennett?
07:55No.
07:56That'd be something.
07:58I'd have cashed in those Marlboro miles.
08:00I didn't know he had emphysema.
08:02I don't think he'd have a good connection.
08:06He needs to get your basic telephone.
08:11All right.
08:12John.
08:14Yes, sir.
08:15Why did you call in now?
08:16We told you 945.
08:18When did you say that?
08:21That's what our other producer said, who's the senior executive producer of this show.
08:27Nobody said that to me.
08:28John, ask yourself right now, after you hear this.
08:34If I told you, at the beginning of WBC, you were going to be an all-star, what would you
08:38have said?
08:38John, ask yourself, am I a 9 o'clock guest on this show?
08:42Oh, my God.
08:44Just a quick answer, John.
08:46No.
08:46Yes or no.
08:46No more talking.
08:47Yes or no.
08:47Yes or no.
08:48Are you a 9 o'clock guest on this show?
08:50No.
08:50All right.
08:51We'll talk to you at 945.
08:53There went John, and we'll talk to him at 945.
08:56Yes.
08:57John is at the all-star game.
08:58He will be covering it tonight for the fan.
09:00He's credentialed.
09:01As we have three all-stars.
09:02Yes, he's a credentialed media member.
09:04John, our producer.
09:05John.
09:06He is who got our last guest, who was Mike Sielski, who was great, by the way.
09:10Absolutely great.
09:11And also got the Miami Heat guy that wasn't the guy that we thought we were getting.
09:16The guy that we thought we were getting.
09:16He was still good, too.
09:17These are good quality guests.
09:19You just didn't know who the hell they were.
09:21Yeah.
09:21That's right.
09:22And at 945, we'll talk to him about all of that great stuff.
09:25We know who John is.
09:26I have a question about the name he has for his girlfriend and his phone that I saw there
09:30on Instagram.
09:31We're going to have to wait for him to come back for that one.
09:33That is a little much.
09:35A little strong.
09:36If you could, like, what would you tell, did you think, what would, if I told you.
09:41That was him talking to Travis Bazzana.
09:43If I told you, am I a 9 o'clock guest?
09:44No.
09:44You can hear that Travis Bazzana interview at 923thefan.com.
09:49He talked to Travis Bazzana.
09:50He talked to Parker Messick.
09:51He also talked to Cade Smith.
09:52He's holding it down.
09:53Guardians are ahead of schedule, by the way.
09:56Now, I understand what Jonathan was saying yesterday.
09:58I'm not attacking Jonathan.
09:59I think he speaks for the outsiders who are looking at Cleveland.
10:02He said nobody takes the Guardians seriously in the playoffs.
10:05And I think the fan base does.
10:07I think the front offices do.
10:11I just think that the other lineups, I think they probably would have to agree with John.
10:17If this team win a postseason series or even have a deep postseason run, you're going
10:21to have to do better than 24th in slugging.
10:24Well, I mean, they haven't been doing better than 24th in slugging, and they've won postseason
10:28series the last couple years.
10:29Yeah, but this is why no one takes them seriously.
10:31There's a difference between winning postseason series and then people acting like there's
10:36a juggernaut that's waiting to pounce.
10:38And this team is not a juggernaut waiting to pounce right now.
10:40It depends on what you qualify as why people don't take them seriously.
10:44I think the pitching is really good.
10:45I love the starting pitching at certain points, by the way.
10:48There's parts of the bullpen I enjoy.
10:50I think the offense is just too awful right now.
10:53I'm ready to lock it in.
10:54What exactly are you going to lock it in?
10:56I'm ready to lock it in.
10:57Because I understand.
10:58Listen, I'm not here to say that you're wrong.
11:01The first 90 to 92, what are you doing, 95?
11:0397, I think, is what we're at now.
11:0597 games.
11:06The offense has not been consistently good.
11:08We are in agreement here.
11:09What I'm looking at is the upside of this offense with a healthy Hosey, Kwon hitting,
11:15Bazzana continuing to...
11:17Did you mention CDL here?
11:18He's a rookie, but Bazzana continuing to actually be playable,
11:23Rokio being really good, and DeLauder really being a good player as well.
11:27I will tell you, by the end of the regular season, I expect them in most, not all,
11:33most major categories to be top 20.
11:36Lower your heads at, Nick.
11:37I don't know how you can sit there and bag on the Cavs all year long and say you don't
11:40take them seriously in the playoffs, and then go, oh, but the Guardians.
11:43No, you can't do that.
11:44Let's stop doing this.
11:46Take them both seriously if you want to.
11:47That's great.
11:48But damn it, you can't sit there and just do it with one and not the other.
11:52One team has veterans.
11:54One team has been through it many times.
11:56This team has a young team.
11:57I do think that at one point, hopefully, if things go the right way,
12:00I'm not going to bag on Nick the whole time.
12:02I'm not even trying to bag on Nick.
12:03I think if they can get the CBA figured out, I think somewhere in 27 or 28 is when you
12:09look
12:09at this lineup.
12:10If Chase DeLauter continues to progress, if Rocchio can stick around, I'm hoping that
12:17Steven Kwan is getting the fuzzies out.
12:19We'll find out.
12:21I hold some hope there because I do think he got in his own head, and that's part of the
12:25reason for the bat speed and all the other things.
12:27Pazana being Pazana, like all the other things that come together, I do think that they will be
12:31considerably more seriously taken by the big lineup teams in the NBA.
12:42However, I don't think that the Dodgers would bat an eye.
12:46I think we'd be thrilled to be in the World Series.
12:49I think that this would be a tremendous managerial job.
12:52The future would be bright.
12:54I would just be ready to be having my heart broken because the Dodgers are a juggernaut of
12:59offense and pitching and everything because they can afford it.
13:03You would want to say the same thing about the Yankees.
13:06You should say the same thing about the Mets, but they're an utter disaster.
13:09To me, they're the example of why money doesn't buy happiness.
13:12I'm a happy Guardians fan.
13:14They're a good baseball team.
13:15They're overachieving, and they ain't spending the money.
13:18I'd be sick to my stomach if I was spending $700 million.
13:20Not my money.
13:21But if my favorite team was spending $700 million on Juan Soto, I'm sick to my stomach.
13:26Or my favorite football team is spending $230 million of a quarterback that nobody wants
13:29to see.
13:30How would I feel about Juan Soto?
13:31Yeah, Mets are 17 games below $500 million.
13:33And you can't trade that.
13:34That's bad.
13:35They all hate each other.
13:36They're chanting the names of guys there.
13:37So it could be worse.
13:39So listen, I'm not trying to...
13:40This isn't a bag-on-Guardians thing.
13:42I respect where Jonathan is because that's an unpopular thing to say for a team that has won
13:48two straight division championships, is a good young team that is on the rise, who is
13:54overachieving, and I think their best baseball is ahead of them.
13:57But what Jonathan said as of July 14th is not false.
14:04Yeah, they would need...
14:05I agree with you.
14:06They would need Jose to come back and be the best version of Jose that he's been all year.
14:11Yes.
14:12Because obviously he had not been, and I think he would even admit it.
14:16And Angel Martinez, getting him back.
14:19And then, you know, it's tough with rookies.
14:22It's tough because...
14:23Gosh, I didn't even mention Angel.
14:25Well, there is such a push and pull for rookies in that league where some guys, immediate success,
14:35and the next thing you know, they get sent down.
14:37Or that dynamic that always happens where the pitchers, they start to get a read on you.
14:43I mean, that happened with DeLauder and his power, you know, that obviously the pitching
14:48started to get a book on him.
14:49And now here he is.
14:50He's firing back.
14:51He's got a counterpunch.
14:52That's exciting.
14:53Especially when you're dealing with talented players who, you know, we've had such trouble
14:58developing youngsters.
14:59Well, when you draft guys as high as like Bazana, you know, the talent's already there.
15:03You just got to see how they react to it as well.
15:06Yeah, you're right.
15:06So, in a weird way, it's like, I think they could have, especially with the deadline move,
15:11potentially, that the ceiling might be a little higher with the lineup.
15:15It just sucks.
15:16The numbers are the numbers.
15:17Like, they're one of the worst offenses in baseball right now.
15:19And if that doesn't change, then Jonathan is going to be a thousand percent right.
15:25Well, because you put too much pressure on a young staff.
15:28Like, I can only ask.
15:30I'm asking everything I can at Joey Cantillo.
15:32I didn't plan on talking Guardians here, but LeBron ain't going anywhere.
15:36I have a theory on that coming up at 920 that makes actual sense here.
15:40I know we're doing a lot of bopping around the dial here, but I got to get this figured
15:44out here about LeBron because I think people are focused on the wrong thing.
15:47Let me just say this.
15:49Cantillo, you're asking a lot of him, and he's paid it back in spades.
15:52I think he's having a wonderful season.
15:56Ciccone, Ciccone, Ciccone.
15:58Okay?
15:59I think that he's a – I really think that there's a fifth guy, nameless gray face.
16:04I have a lot of respect for Cantillo, like I said.
16:08I think Parker Messick's an ace in training.
16:10I think Gavin Williams can be an ace.
16:12I think he obviously has ace tendencies.
16:14That outing he had earlier this week when they needed it so bad, and he went seven right
16:19off the rip and did as well as he could.
16:21Then they brought in Gaddis and Cade Smith.
16:23I mean, he struck out 11 during that.
16:25They needed to stop the bleeding.
16:26They did that.
16:27I mean, that's big boy stuff right there.
16:28I think Tanner Bybee's a two or a three on a really competitive baseball team.
16:33And I think with what you just said about that lineup, they got to continue to progress.
16:39We have to cross our fingers.
16:40We have to hope that there's a cap and a floor.
16:42There's a lot of things we have to hope for.
16:45I think their best years are ahead of them.
16:46That's why I hope that we're not beating up on Jonathan for basically telling the truth
16:51because you're still – to us, it's old hat.
16:54To them, they're still new.
16:55Travis Pizano was not part of last year's team that came back from 15 down.
16:59He wasn't part of the 23 team, now 24 team.
17:05He wasn't part of those organizations.
17:07And neither was DeLauder.
17:09Angel Martinez spent a cup of coffee.
17:11There's not a whole lot of experience here other than Jose.
17:14So, for us, who are in our 40s and 50s and 60s, we've been around, we've seen it,
17:19and people are acting frustrated over it.
17:21Yeah, but these are all new guys.
17:22So, while they've kept that standard up – see, this is how difficult it is.
17:26And this is how it shows you just how much Jose Ramirez is great.
17:29Look at what – let me make a wild comparison here.
17:32Last year, the bottom kind of finally fell through when it came to the Kansas City Chiefs.
17:38Patrick Mahomes got hurt.
17:40They've been drafting at the back end of the draft for a long time.
17:43He was the only guy keeping them afloat.
17:46We are begging Jose – we're begging father time and the injuries to stave off,
17:53bring Jose back, give us a chance to do it.
17:55He's keeping us afloat almost the same way that Mahomes kept the Kansas City Chiefs afloat.
17:59Difference is three Super Bowls, obviously.
18:01One can't play football.
18:02Three championships, for crying out loud.
18:04That's a fantastic thing.
18:05But that shows you how hard baseball is and what Jose has to do because you're dealing with pups.
18:10So, you're going through your roster transition.
18:12The same thing a franchise quarterback would have to go through.
18:15And he's able to keep the Guardians afloat just like Mahomes has been able to.
18:19I mean, he's our franchise quarterback playing baseball.
18:22And there's obviously so much respect for Jose Ramirez.
18:26But the organization, while we trust the organization to the point where we become frustrated for him
18:31because they play well enough just to make us upset again.
18:34And we can't just forget about the Guardians halfway through the year
18:37like Pirates fans have historically been able to and other ones.
18:40While we've been frustrated, we have to see what has been put here.
18:44And what has been put here is a good foundation for success
18:47all around an all-time legend who we'll build a statue for.
18:51And no, that ain't no LeBron James conversation.
18:54That's a Jose Ramirez conversation.
18:56LeBron will get his and so will Jose.
18:58See, it's difficult to have these big-time talks about this
19:02because you want damning evidence one way or the other
19:04whether they're going the right way or the wrong way,
19:07especially when it comes to sports.
19:08No, they are who they are.
19:09And who they are is a good young team that,
19:14because of what they did to overachieve over the last couple of years,
19:17it's almost set up for them to disappoint this season.
19:20Because you've won the division now two straight years.
19:23You had that great comeback last year.
19:25If you don't win the division, if you just make the playoffs,
19:30to the general fan, it might be seen as a disappointment.
19:35It's not.
19:36And then if I say it's not a disappointment,
19:38well, then I'm just a yes man for the Cleveland Guardians.
19:41I'm just with you, Anthony Dolan.
19:43It's a tough spot to be in.
19:44Come on over eight.
19:45This would be eight times in 11 years.
19:47And boy, would it be nice if they could plop Jose Ramirez,
19:50healthy Jose Ramirez, back and right into that lineup.
19:54It would make a world of a difference.
