00:00Now, let's talk about the Dallas Cowboys.
00:05You didn't need any audio here, right?
00:06Well, irrelevant.
00:08We gave out three and a half minutes.
00:10Alec, you stay focused.
00:11This is a far, far more important quest that you're on.
00:16All right, what still remains for the Cowboys in terms of roster
00:22or however you want to lay it out prior to probably getting to training camp?
00:28I know we've got mini camps along the way and everything.
00:31So I saw kind of a portion of the list on NFL.com,
00:36and I disagreed with one of them.
00:40One of them is no longer relevant,
00:42and the other one I think is perfectly relevant.
00:45But we start with George Pickens officially signing the tag,
00:50which that's what Kyle said was going to happen three days ago,
00:54so I understand all the to-do and hubbub.
00:57Yeah, when Kyle hopped on with us on Monday, I believe.
01:00It was Monday, and we were having the discussion of should we worry about that at all?
01:06And he was like, I honestly think this is a matter of logistics,
01:10and when he's in the building, because you have to be,
01:13it's not a faxable thing.
01:15This isn't a thing that you can just send in.
01:17You have to be in the building, sign it in front of people,
01:20and submit it to people immediately.
01:22Are you just watching his face right now?
01:24I'm listening to, I'm listening to.
01:26I will sit here and talk and watch his face as well.
01:28No, I'm listening.
01:28So Kyle told us not to be concerned.
01:31He's busy, look at me.
01:33He told us that everything would be fine,
01:35he just needed to be in the building to sign it.
01:38George Pickens says,
01:39showing up, signing this thing, let's get this season going.
01:42I like what y'all did with the defense, by the way.
01:44I hope that's what he said.
01:45High-fived everybody after and was like,
01:46nice job on the defense, guys.
01:49So that is, yes, that's taken care of.
01:51Are you talking, I just want to make sure,
01:53you're talking specifically about additions to this roster,
01:58not anything else, or is there other stuff?
02:00I think there are other things you can factor in.
02:02Because I think there's a lot of other things too,
02:04and I'm interested to see where people go.
02:06I will say this, development of your left tackle
02:09is of, now for me, of utmost importance.
02:14So that's the one thing.
02:15But signing George Pickens, having him sign the deal,
02:19was the second most, the first most important thing
02:23after the draft.
02:24The draft, and then this, and so here we go.
02:27Now, I want to also say, here's my hope with the Pickens thing.
02:31Okay.
02:32And I hope that this, I hope him signing yesterday
02:35calmed a lot of Cowboys fans down.
02:38Okay.
02:40How, Kyle mentioned this with me yesterday
02:42as we were talking back and forth,
02:43how scarred were we
02:46by the Micah Parsons ordeal?
02:50So...
02:51Because my hope is
02:53that George Pickens...
02:55He's got it.
02:56My hope is that George Pickens was like,
02:58told his agent,
03:00I really like Dallas,
03:02they really like me,
03:03I'm hoping to be there,
03:04or if nothing else,
03:06let me use this as the biggest spotlight.
03:08Look, I'm a dude that performs on this stage,
03:10I'm ready for it.
03:11I want to be on the Cowboys stage,
03:13and I want to perform there the most.
03:16And that he's ready for that.
03:17So, I think that's valid for me.
03:19It goes a little bit beyond that
03:22because I think about somebody, for example,
03:24like CeeDee Lamb.
03:25Because CeeDee Lamb,
03:26it didn't get to the place where Micah did,
03:29but also he had a slow start to the season.
03:32And so, I think that's what I'm concerned about
03:34is seeing players who eventually did sign,
03:37whether it's the tag or they negotiated,
03:39like with Zach Martin,
03:41that ended up costing you a crap ton of dead money.
03:45And CeeDee Lamb,
03:46that ended up costing him
03:47the first several games of the season
03:49in terms of quality that we were used to.
03:51And so, I think it goes beyond just Micah
03:53from that perspective,
03:54but I totally hear that.
03:57I agree with you there completely,
03:59and I do think that the,
04:02when it comes to a lot of people,
04:05based on the way the Micah thing went here,
04:07a lot of people put a bad mark on Mulligetta,
04:11and I think that there is a history
04:14of what he's done for his clients,
04:15which that's his job.
04:16That's what you want him to do.
04:18That's why you hire him.
04:19But I also think that that dude's a businessman,
04:21and he understands this business,
04:23and the Cowboys and him have an agreement now,
04:25and they still have until July 15th
04:27to have a long-term agreement.
04:29That story's not going away.
04:30Yeah, which is ironic,
04:31given that the Cowboys straight up said,
04:33we are not going to pursue that.
04:35But I think you're right.
04:36That's not going to go away.
04:37So I don't like when David Mulligetta
04:40is now representing Cowboys clients
04:43because he's so good at his job.
04:45Just the same way, like, people didn't like...
04:47But you have a ton of respect for him.
04:49He's amazing at his job.
04:50Yeah, he's amazing at his job.
04:52And that's the thing.
04:53Like, when Overshow went over to Mulligetta,
04:55I was like, oh, no,
04:56partially because Mulligetta
04:57is so unbelievable at his job.
04:59It's just like the same reason
05:00that some baseball fans didn't,
05:02especially Rangers fans,
05:03didn't like Scott Boris,
05:04because Scott Boris maximized
05:05every single possible penny
05:07he could for his clients.
05:08You know why?
05:09Because that's his job.
05:10And so I don't begrudge Mulligetta
05:13trying to do his job.
05:14I just don't like it also at the same time
05:16when I'm like,
05:17excuse me, Mr. Mulligetta,
05:19our front office is not good
05:20at navigating the salary cap,
05:22so could you help us out?
05:23Yeah.
05:23So, NFL.com,
05:26they asked about if George Pickens
05:28is going to play on the tag.
05:30Asked and answered.
05:31They have two other things.
05:32What will the new defense look like?
05:34And you know that I think
05:36that is of utmost importance.
05:37But also they had another point
05:39that I disagree with.
05:40You need to add more running back depth.
05:43I disagree.
05:44I think you are all set
05:46at running back.
05:47And some people might not like
05:49the way it looks.
05:51I think I am, actually.
05:53I'm sorry, what?
05:54I think I am.
05:56What did you see?
05:57I saw that Javante Williams
05:59was awesome.
06:00I agree.
06:01What did you see from Jaden Blue
06:03that tells you you have a switch up back?
06:05See, not necessarily.
06:07For Phil Moffa.
06:08Jaden Blue.
06:09Phil Moffa, I just think,
06:11was not given the opportunity.
06:13Shoulder injuries.
06:15Yeah.
06:15But also, I think Malik Davis
06:17showed you, I'm alright.
06:19Okay.
06:19And if you're talking about
06:21what do you need from your
06:22backup quarterback,
06:23excuse me, running back,
06:24I think I'm kind of like,
06:26yeah, I'm alright.
06:27Yeah, you know what?
06:28I'll agree with you on that.
06:29I want Blue to take that next step
06:31because he's an explosive running back.
06:34If he finds the seam,
06:35he can be gone.
06:36And that can change games.
06:37And that changes the way
06:38defenses approach you.
06:42I will say this.
06:43This is very similar, Kevin,
06:45to what we were discussing
06:46with the Rangers pitching.
06:48This is a place where
06:49even Schottenheimer said this.
06:51Clayton Adams has kind of
06:52alluded to this as well.
06:54The offense this year,
06:55they want to get
06:57Dak under center
06:58a little bit more
06:59so that you can do better
07:01from the running perspective.
07:03You can only run the ball
07:04so many different ways
07:05out of the shotgun.
07:06You can run it a variety of ways
07:08out of under center.
07:09And so it gives Dak
07:10an even better play action
07:11to go along with it.
07:12And more explosive run plays
07:14can be run from it.
07:15And so as both of them
07:18have said,
07:19the offense must evolve.
07:20It cannot stay
07:21what it was last year.
07:23Take what it was last year
07:24and add to it.
07:26And when it comes
07:27to the running game,
07:27I hope they add
07:28a lot more to it
07:29and that Blue
07:30and Malik Davis
07:31are a big part of it.
07:32Because I totally understand
07:33the idea of if it ain't broke,
07:35don't fix it.
07:35But that doesn't mean
07:36you can't tweak it,
07:38refine it, you know?
07:40Add to, grow.
07:40Yeah, exactly.
07:41Exactly.
07:42So what I'm curious about
07:44is what are the other things
07:47that you think
07:50that you think
07:51the Cowboys need to work on?
07:53Whether that's adding talent
07:54or I go back to the thing
07:55I do agree with
07:58with NFL.com.
07:59Sometimes I think
08:00that the mini camps
08:02and stuff like that
08:03get talked about
08:03way too much
08:04for something that is,
08:05you know,
08:06it's relevant to a point,
08:07but come on.
08:08It's important for
08:09the development
08:11of these young players
08:12for sure,
08:13and you've got to get
08:14a bunch of dudes
08:15on the same page real quick.
08:17And that's why it feels
08:18maybe more important
08:19than usual this year
08:20for the Cowboys,
08:21although at this point
08:22they should be used to it
08:23with just continually
08:24switching out
08:25defensive coordinators.
08:26So I think that is
08:28going to be hugely important
08:29because whether it's,
08:30hey, what all can we do
08:32with Caleb Downs?
08:32What all can we do
08:33with Malachi Lawrence?
08:35What all can you do
08:36with Rashawn Gary?
08:37Like, in the structure
08:39of this system,
08:40I think all of those
08:41things are hugely important.
08:42I saw this,
08:43I think it was CBS Sports
08:45that threw this out there,
08:46and I'm not a big fan
08:48of his,
08:48but he did have
08:49five forced fumbles
08:50last year,
08:51and I'm a big fan of that.
08:52And they said
08:53Edge was still a piece
08:55that you're concerned about
08:56because they don't love
08:57Rashawn Gary that much.
08:59And they were like,
09:00Joey Bosa's still out there.
09:02And I just don't,
09:03I feel like,
09:05okay, give me more talent.
09:07Throw more talent
09:08into the mix.
09:08I don't think, though,
09:10that if you throw him
09:11into the mix
09:11that I'm like,
09:12I'm just relying on him
09:13to save the season.
09:14Yeah.
09:15I feel like you have
09:16a variety of people
09:17that you are expecting
09:19to play a variety
09:20of places here.
09:21I just don't know
09:22how adaptable he is.
09:23I'd love to hear
09:24Christian Parker's
09:25perspective on
09:25he's exactly the type
09:27of adaptable guy,
09:28or he's not exactly
09:30flexible enough
09:30for what I'm looking for.
09:32But I think that
09:33at the moment,
09:34on the defensive side,
09:35it's really more about
09:36now that we got them,
09:38now we've got to see
09:38what they can and cannot do.
09:40And we've got to get them
09:40into as many of these
09:41situations as possible
09:42before we get to
09:43training camp
09:44to see what we can
09:45get out of them
09:47and then start installing.
09:48So that's the next
09:49process for me.
09:50Now, you had already
09:52brought this up.
09:53Somebody texted in
09:54from the 561,
09:55I don't think left tackle
09:57is settled.
09:58So my version of that
09:59was just more of a question.
10:01Do you need more
10:02offensive line help?
10:04Now, whether you think
10:05that's directly at
10:06I don't feel good
10:07at left tackle
10:08or how do you feel
10:09about the overall depth
10:11of the offensive line,
10:13that was a question
10:13I had as well.
10:15And then,
10:16are you sure,
10:17I'll pose this question
10:18to you to start.
10:19Are you sure
10:21about the health
10:22and quality
10:23of your inside linebackers
10:25and cornerbacks?
10:26Because I think
10:27that's where I still
10:28kind of struggle.
10:29No.
10:31Okay.
10:31Well, that didn't
10:32help me struggle less.
10:33Can I hit the tackle
10:35part first?
10:36Sure.
10:37Nate Thomas has
10:38experience at left tackle.
10:41Hopefully,
10:42he develops
10:43this offseason, too.
10:44I think that's another
10:45thing that we just
10:45don't think of very much.
10:47There were moments
10:47where we were like,
10:48man, he was serviceable
10:49over there last year.
10:50Sure.
10:51Moments where we also
10:52like, Tyler Guyton
10:54was serviceable.
10:55Yeah.
10:55But serviceable
10:56at left tackle
10:56with this team
10:57is not acceptable.
10:58Like, you need that dude
10:59to be Tyler Smith-like.
11:02And so, like,
11:03that's what your
11:03expectation needs
11:04to be there.
11:05So, hopefully,
11:06both of those
11:07developed a little bit.
11:08I don't know if there's
11:08a competition still there.
11:10And when it comes
11:11to Drew Shelton,
11:11the draft pick,
11:13he has a lot of
11:15adulting to do
11:15before I'm ready
11:16to put him out there
11:17and replace.
11:18So, I don't...
11:20Kevin, yes,
11:20I do think you need
11:21more help.
11:22I don't think you need
11:23more depth there.
11:24I think you need more...
11:25You need players
11:26to be better
11:27and they're only
11:28relying from within.
11:29I don't think they're
11:30going to add any
11:30other sources outside
11:31to make that happen.
11:33So, that's where...
11:33That's just going to
11:35have to be an off-season
11:36thing of development
11:37and growth.
11:37And given how much
11:38Schottenheimer talks
11:40about competition
11:41and theoretically
11:43every spot being up
11:44for grabs,
11:45do you think
11:46Drew Shelton will get
11:48a real deal look
11:49at, hey,
11:51maybe you're ready
11:51to roll way faster
11:52than anyone could
11:53have conceivably imagined?
11:55Or do you think
11:56it's just like,
11:56well, I mean,
11:57as long as Guyton's
11:58still healthy,
11:59obviously we'll just
11:59play him.
12:00No, I don't.
12:01Okay.
12:01But, I also...
12:03That dude could show
12:03up to camp
12:04and be better.
12:05And then he just...
12:07As Skip kept telling us,
12:08Zeke Durian has to
12:10force me.
12:11He has to kick my
12:11door down and show me
12:12that he is ready for it.
12:14Just based on what I
12:16saw from him in college,
12:17he has to lift
12:18some more weights.
12:19Yeah.
12:19Get a little bit
12:20stronger in a couple
12:20of different areas.
12:21And then I think
12:22he's going to be
12:23a serviceable dude
12:24around the league
12:25for a little bit.
12:26Somebody asked this,
12:27would you rather have
12:28Micah back...
12:30No.
12:30...or the two guys
12:31you picked in the
12:32first round this year?
12:33I'll take downs
12:34a thousand times
12:36out of a thousand.
12:37And plus you got
12:37even more than that,
12:40so then you're also
12:41taking away Quinnen
12:42and Kenny Clark
12:43and you're really
12:44gutting your front.
12:45And I'm not saying
12:45I would take downs
12:46individually over
12:47Micah a thousand.
12:48Like that might be
12:49a different number,
12:49but you're right.
12:50With the addition
12:51of those things,
12:52Downs is going to be,
12:53in my opinion,
12:55the culture changer
12:56that you've been
12:57looking for.
12:58Yeah, and like,
12:59I know this past year
13:00it was because he got
13:01hurt, but there's a
13:02couple of things
13:02at play for that.
13:03Micah Parsons is a
13:05heck of a player,
13:06but there's no part
13:06of me, even as much
13:07as I like Caleb Downs,
13:09that I'm like,
13:10well, we got this
13:10one defender,
13:11now our defense is
13:12unstoppable, you know?
13:13And so it just felt
13:14like paying him
13:15was weird.
13:16And then also,
13:17you've still never
13:18seen Micah Parsons
13:19really show up
13:19in the playoffs.
13:20And then you asked
13:21the question about
13:21the linebackers,
13:228-1-7,
13:23everybody's assuming
13:24Overshone's going
13:25to return to his
13:25normal, not on this
13:26show.
13:26Not, yeah.
13:27This show, and I
13:28don't think,
13:28Hence the question,
13:29yeah.
13:29I'm not sure I've
13:30heard anybody at
13:31the station say that.
13:32I think we're all
13:32very apprehensive,
13:34hopeful, but on this
13:35show specifically,
13:36we're like, hey,
13:37are we good there?
13:38Kevin,
13:41Dee Winters talked
13:42today.
13:43Have you seen some
13:44of the things that
13:45he said?
13:45I have not.
13:46I like that trade.
13:48He said he wasn't
13:49expecting, this is
13:50Nick Harris, our boy
13:50Nick Harris, wasn't
13:52expecting a trade, he
13:53was surprised to get
13:53this call.
13:54Said he's not
13:55familiar with the
13:563-4 scheme, but he's
13:58learning the playbook
13:59now.
14:01Christian Parker
14:01wants him in space to
14:03run and hit to
14:04maximize his
14:04physicality.
14:05Love that.
14:06First took on some
14:07green dot responsibilities
14:08last season.
14:09Quote, there's a first
14:10time for everything, and
14:11I'm willing to do
14:12whatever it takes.
14:13Okay.
14:14I love that attitude
14:15from him, but does
14:16that not perpetuate
14:17something that makes
14:18you nervous at times
14:19when the Cowboys are
14:20like, hey, I know you
14:21don't really do what we
14:22do, but why don't you
14:23come on down?
14:23Downs could do it
14:24too.
14:25You know, he could be a
14:26green dot guy.
14:26Now, they specifically
14:28were like, we'd rather
14:28have him be a linebacker,
14:29but that's the case.
14:31And then he added, he
14:32was moving to Arlington,
14:33we got the trade call, so
14:34he was already moving to
14:36the city.
14:36He grew up watching the
14:38Cowboys, and he took
14:39us 30 visits with the
14:40Cowboys in 23 alongside
14:42Overshone, things we
14:42kind of knew, but there's
14:44going to be a lot of
14:45newness for everybody on
14:47this defense.
14:48So that's, Kevin, I
14:50think that's where the
14:50development growth has to
14:52happen fast.
14:53That's the number one
14:54most important thing
14:55starting now.
