00:00And week two of the voluntary OTAs begins today, today, tomorrow, and Thursday for the Cowboys.
00:10Keep an eye out to see if maybe that Thursday one gets canceled.
00:13And then Shoddy will do a press conference tomorrow right here on 105.3 The Fan.
00:19You think that they're going to cancel OTAs so everybody can come out to the Specs and hang out with
00:22us in Arlington?
00:23A little bit.
00:24It makes sense.
00:25A little bit.
00:25It's synergy.
00:26Yeah.
00:27Corporate.
00:27Because they're like, hey, we're worried about you getting back here in time.
00:30If we were doing OTAs at the stadium, it would be fine.
00:33Yeah.
00:33But since it's at the star, it's going to be a little bit more of a drive.
00:36Get that.
00:37Now, I wanted to talk about the defensive line.
00:40All right.
00:40And some stuff that Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark have had to say.
00:44But before we get to that, can I ask you a question about another player?
00:48Okay.
00:48Do you view, because we've kind of talked about upgrades versus progress stoppers and all of that,
00:53do you view Jadavion Clowney as more of an upgrade or more of a progress stopper?
01:02Who's he in the way of?
01:04Because I'm kind of curious where you line him up.
01:09With a different scheme.
01:09In this scheme as well.
01:11Well, and if he's, if he's lined, I mean, he's not getting the defensive snaps that Quinnen Williams is going
01:19to get.
01:19Sure.
01:22Is he going to get the defensive snaps that Rashawn Gary's getting?
01:26Or do you say, you know what?
01:28We're going to do something a little different with you, too.
01:31I think they are even still trying to figure that out at the moment.
01:34Yeah.
01:34Honestly, with Malachi Lawrence, you don't have the ability right now to say you're going to help a championship team
01:43yet.
01:44Yet.
01:45But I don't know that Clowney is going to, but I know that he has the experience and understanding of
01:52a lot more nuance at this point in his career.
01:56Is he saddled up behind Rashawn Gary?
01:58Or are they saddled up together?
02:00You're probably going to put Malachi Lawrence in a red shirt year if that's the case.
02:04But again, are you trying to say that this year you can afford that?
02:08That your defense was so bad that you, you know what, guys?
02:12We'll just wait.
02:13Well, I think you can't.
02:15I don't think you have the time to say, we'll wait on Malachi Lawrence to grow.
02:19Yeah.
02:19And look, you know how I feel about this.
02:21I do not think that you have the front office and financial wherewithal to stall on a draft pick.
02:26Because that's just one year closer to that person theoretically getting paid.
02:30So you want them to play as much as possible?
02:33I am saying if you're going to be a team right now that's contending, he might have to wait for
02:38his time.
02:39Yeah, it would be a different scenario if, let's say, the first two weeks of the season you held the
02:45opponents to, let's say, a combined 30 points.
02:47Which, to me, would be astonishing.
02:50Then I'm like, is Jadavian Clowney still there?
02:53Are you ready to go?
02:54Are you in shape?
02:55Then maybe take a look.
02:56But I don't know if he'll still be around at that point.
02:58And yeah, he is like, wouldn't you think that he would want that time off during camp?
03:03I would, but at the end of last season, he's like, it's going to be different next year.
03:08It's good to say things.
03:08Yeah, it is good to say things.
03:10It's good to say things.
03:11And then, you know, the market defines that too, right?
03:13Sure.
03:14The market definitely says whether or not, like, even with George Pickens.
03:18The market told him what his value was, and that was to go ahead and side that tender.
03:23So with this, yeah, I understand where you're coming from.
03:29And Malachi Lawrence, you need to get rolling, buddy.
03:32And I want to see, I hope he's up to it.
03:34Yeah.
03:34That's my thing is, if you're up to it, then let's do it.
03:38But if you're not, then I got to find somebody else right now, because we don't have time
03:42for you to get your feet on the ground.
03:44Now, for Quentin Williams and Kenny Clark, Quentin Williams was talking the other day about
03:49how, like, you know, just having Kenny Clark in the same room, he's already benefited
03:54tremendously from that.
03:55And I know we talk a whole lot about the full offseason for players who are working their
04:01way back to being healthy, or somebody like Overshawn who feels healthy for the first
04:04time in a while.
04:06But what do you think about the idea of, like, these two veteran players in Kenny Clark and
04:11Quentin Williams to have the offseason together as well?
04:15Oh, that's a big, that's a significant deal for them to be able to work together on those
04:19things.
04:21And, you know, real quick, 2-1-4, Malachi should start as a pass rush specialist.
04:25I think that's what's going to happen.
04:26I don't think he's going to be taking a lot of the Rashawn Gary early down snaps.
04:30He'll be one of those guys that if it's third down and that quarterback's ready to run,
04:35Malachi's ready for it.
04:36But I think it's good for them to have that offseason together.
04:39Also good for them to have a defensive coordinator that Kenny Clark understands what his role and
04:45responsibilities are going to be.
04:47Because Christian Parker immediately was like, look, whenever I got to Green Bay, this is what
04:51he was doing and he was the best at it.
04:53Right.
04:53You want to anchor him right there in the middle, these are the things we're going to
04:56ask of him to do.
04:58And Quentin Williams is one of those athletic dudes that I think can do a variety of things.
05:02So I think working together, coming up with games they can play together also is a good
05:06thing.
05:06But understanding that I think they're the leaders of this team.
05:11Ooh, okay.
05:12I think that Jalen Thompson, we'll get to him at some point too, but I think Jalen Thompson
05:16is going to be one of the guys that's, you know, getting everybody lined up.
05:20But I think when it comes to the tenacity, the mentality of this team, I think that those
05:27two dudes in the middle are the voices that the rest of the guys are going to be looking
05:31to because they're the seniors.
05:33They're the experienced dudes in this league.
05:35And so I think they're going to have that much of an impact.
05:37And I hope for it too, man.
05:39Do you want to start with Kenny Clark thinking about the defense is going to be awesome or
05:42Quentin Williams thinking the defense is going to be awesome?
05:44Everybody thinks that, huh?
05:46Who do you want to start with?
05:47Kenny Clark.
05:48Kenny Clark!
05:48He talked about Christian Parker's defense and he said, just the attention to detail.
05:53The defense is going to be huge on details, huge on pre-snap, all that kind of stuff.
05:57All that stuff is going to be really good for us.
05:59We've got a lot of smart players on all three levels of the defense and that will be great
06:04for us.
06:05And then to Quentin Williams.
06:07Does that feel like a direct shot at what there was last year or does it feel like...
06:13100%.
06:13Okay.
06:14And I'm here for it.
06:15That's what it takes to succeed in this league.
06:18I mean, I think it could be both.
06:19Yeah.
06:19Right?
06:20Every time you talk to Broaddus...
06:21It doesn't have to be a shot, but you can interpret it how you like.
06:24You talk to Broaddus about Saban, Belichick, those guys.
06:27The first thing Broaddus says about those guys is the attention to detail is different.
06:31Those guys don't...
06:32Like, those are the ones.
06:33And they're champions for a reason.
06:36For Quentin Williams.
06:37This is also going to be music to a lot of Cowboys fans' ears.
06:4190% of this whole entire defensive staff is turned over.
06:45All right.
06:45So he is just saying that in an informational capacity.
06:48And then he's going to expand on...
06:51Okay.
06:51All right.
06:51What are you saying?
06:51This is just for informational capacity.
06:53But how much do you think Cowboys fans like hearing that?
06:5690% of this whole entire defensive staff is turned over.
07:00From last year?
07:01Yes.
07:02I think a lot of Cowboys fans will be like, this is fantastic news.
07:04I'm going to raise my hand.
07:05I am one of those Cowboys fans.
07:07And wasn't it interesting, too, that Christian Parker seemed to have people in mind that
07:12he wanted to coach for him because of the experience that he's had, but also some of
07:17the players that he's seen in this league.
07:19He's like, I want that college linebacker coach on my team.
07:22You know what I always think is people who have that level of ambition always have it
07:28planned out ahead of time.
07:29Like, even when he was just there, you know, he's like, if I got my own staff, I would want
07:33this person and this person and this guy and all that.
07:35Absolutely.
07:36And so, Quinnen continues.
07:38The guys we brought in from coaches all the way down to players is unbelievable.
07:42The scheme itself, you've got to see around the league.
07:45A lot of people run the same scheme and they have unbelievable success.
07:48All the top team defenses in this league run this scheme.
07:51Super excited the way CP runs it, how meticulous he is.
07:55Again, the details he hones in on and to be around a great group of guys.
08:00So, once again, I know the quote itself was different, but specifically, details.
08:08Yeah, and that's going to be the difference.
08:11Man, I know I make reference to this a lot, but if you watch Film Watchers, right now he's
08:17doing the top 10 offensive plays of this year on YouTube, TikTok.
08:22Film Watchers is a really fun, energetic dude.
08:26Dude, the first play that I saw, number 10, was a play to get Alec Pierce open for a big
08:31time bomb against Houston.
08:33But the attention to detail that Houston had already was brilliant on what they did defensively
08:41to stop whatever play they had stopped previously.
08:43However, Jonathan Gannon saw that and was like, I think we can get this guy open by doing this.
08:48And that's the attention to details that we didn't see last year with this team.
08:53We saw, go out there and be talented and line up and stop guys.
08:57And while that's okay, you, A, lacked the talent to be able to do that, but also lacked
09:03the intelligence to be able to do it many times because they weren't studied up enough.
09:07So, if we're going to talk about football intelligence, let's talk about Jalen Thompson.
09:14Obviously, because of the nature of the draft, there's been a lot of discussion about Caleb
09:20Downs, but for Jalen Thompson, that's somebody who I feel like everyone agrees when the Cowboys
09:28signed him, he has a really top-notch football IQ.
09:33Oh, absolutely.
09:34And that was, I think, the thing that Alec, like, loved so much about him the most was...
09:38Do you think Alec loves this signing?
09:40Top 1% of all Cowboys fans.
09:43Um, well, he was one of the first people we heard call it.
09:47So, I feel like, yes.
09:48And so, yeah, that's one that I do like.
09:51But I think it was, Alec, when we watched him, it just felt like he put himself in position
09:58because of his IQ and preparation.
10:00Yeah, it always felt like he knew what was coming before it was happening.
10:04And it felt like he just did his homework, quite simply.
10:08It goes back to what you were saying at the beginning of the segment, the smart players
10:12on this team, right?
10:14And how that might or might not be a shot at what you had beforehand.
10:17Last year, you just didn't have those guys that had the pre-snap keys and all of the information
10:23up top in between the ears where they could say, hey, you know, 50-50 chance.
10:27I'm going to be in the right spot here.
10:29Let me just trust my instinct in the tape that I watched.
10:32Right.
10:32I will say this.
10:34It was Bobby that I heard say it this morning.
10:38When last week when Shoddy was like, we won't see easy.
10:42We won't see bland yet.
10:45He didn't mention Jalen Thompson.
10:47But Bobby said that he noticed that Jalen Thompson was over on the rubber bands and did not go
10:51out there.
10:52And so now I'm concerned.
10:54Oh, I need to know this week what's going to happen.
10:56He's not able to play during the camp that not everybody is even showing up to?
11:02Oh, my goodness.
11:03And for whatever reason, Schottenheimer hid that from everybody.
11:06Okay.
11:07That is disingenuous from the most genuine man I know.
11:09So we're almost to the part of the season where the football really matters, except not
11:15really because then we get to training camp, which is kind of the part before football
11:19matters.
11:19And we're not even to the part before training camp where football kind of matters because
11:24that's next week.
11:24So we're in phase two of the part before the part before the part of football that kind
11:29of actually matters.
11:30So I think we'll be okay.
11:31Here are two things real quick from the two on four.
11:33Guys, I'll do respect and love.
11:35Pump the brakes a little bit.
11:36I haven't played a game yet.
11:38I where are people getting that?
11:40I'm not saying that like what I'm what I'm doing is there are some exciting new pieces
11:43being added to this and I'm looking forward to what I expect them to do.
11:48And then somebody said, have y'all ever hit the fandom wall?
11:51Like, why am I even bothering watching this?
11:53That's happened a hundred percent almost every year feels like about week 14, but it's for
11:58the record.
11:59I was just reading the quotes of those other players and saying, I'm excited that maybe
12:04we have somebody who pays attention to detail.
12:06Remember the Romo year when he got hurt and we were doing the Dave and Busters and we were
12:11like, oh my gosh, that was the worst year ever.
12:13Because it was like, man, a standout crowd of 14 people is the two and 13 cow.
12:19I know it wasn't that bad, but like, that's what it felt like.
12:22And see, that's the thing.
12:23But I think some Cowboys fans are so beaten down that think about what we just said.
12:27Terrified.
12:28The quotes from Clark and Quinnen Williams were, man, we've got a defensive coordinator who
12:35really pays attention to details.
12:36And that got, guys, let's all calm down.
12:40All we said was, we have a coordinator who might understand details and we're like, hey,
12:45let's all slow down, all right?
12:47No, yeah, this team.
12:48He may not know details.
12:49Yeah, this defense could still be not good at all.
12:53And I will.
12:54Settle down.
12:54I will.
12:54Okay.
12:55I will settle down and I will readily concede that.
12:57We're the KNC Masterpiece right here on 105.3 The Fan.
