How else would you describe the Red Wings loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets?
Transcript
00:00We spaced it out a little bit because I don't know that any of us want to do this.
00:05Probably shouldn't say that as a radio host, but I'm honest with you.
00:09I am so effing sick of this hockey team.
00:12They disgust me.
00:14The sight of them gives me agita.
00:16There I was again watching last night, and this team simply doesn't want it.
00:25I will define the shootout in one word, sad.
00:32It's sad.
00:34It got there.
00:34It looked like they pulled fans from the crowd.
00:37When JVR, old man skates without so much as even feigning a move, and essentially crash test dummies.
00:48Okay, fine.
00:49Then here's the captain.
00:51We misses the net by 60 feet.
00:55I just, the fact they were in overtime angered me.
00:59The fact that Lucas Raymond had a breakaway and he didn't cash in.
01:03The fact that they got saved because the Blue Jackets are a collection of idiots.
01:08They get a four-minute power play.
01:10The wings are beautifully killing this thing off.
01:12And the Jackets go, you know what?
01:14You guys have worked so hard.
01:15Let me help you.
01:16They let them off the hook.
01:18They take a stupid penalty.
01:19And it still results in, at the end of the day, this team gagging away the win, under 20 seconds
01:27to go.
01:27And then they don't seal the deal in overtime, even though they had the preponderance, the vast majority of chances.
01:34Then they had the saddest shootout in the world.
01:37It was awful.
01:39And then postgame happens.
01:42And I think that upsets you more.
01:45I might be getting unfair here.
01:48I've had enough.
01:50And I don't want to hear about a movement clause.
01:52Here's how no trade clauses work.
01:54If a team goes to you and says, we don't want you no more, the player's usually willing to move.
02:00If staying means you're no longer our captain and you're no longer getting first-line minutes, you're probably moving.
02:06You take the sea away from him, and I think he's going to be open to any trade out there.
02:11So here's my point.
02:12Do you want to play?
02:13I think we should play the audio.
02:14Because this is what the winged wheel in their centennial season has turned into.
02:19Yeah, after losing a game.
02:21A collection of beggars.
02:22Yeah, losing a game up 3-2 with 16 seconds to go, and it got tied.
02:26Oh, God, maybe somebody else could help us.
02:29Here's your captain sounding more like a mumble rapper on SoundCloud.
02:34Here's Dylan Larkin.
02:35Take a listen to this.
02:53So the morning show started this topic, and we're going to finish it.
02:57Jim Costa took the people's approach.
03:00You can't trade Dylan Larkin.
03:02He's your best player.
03:03What are you going to replace him with?
03:05I always love the what are you going to replace him with.
03:07As if I care.
03:08What?
03:09Seven more years of no playoffs?
03:11I don't care.
03:12The question comes down to, if you make a bold move this offseason, whether Steve is here or not, again,
03:21I'm bored of those shows.
03:22You know I don't want him here.
03:23You know I'm done with it.
03:24I'm bored.
03:26I'm just telling you, here's where I've reached it.
03:28There's one player on this team that gets protected status, and it's Mo Sider.
03:33That's it.
03:34That's it.
03:34Because, again, where are all the Lucas Raymond truthers?
03:38Where are you boys at?
03:40It's Raymond or Larkin.
03:42One of them's going.
03:44There needs to be a seismic shakeup with this team.
03:48And I can't fix every problem today.
03:50But, man, when we start to look at this, you look at the way this locker room hasn't responded.
03:57There's a disconnect between the room and the coach, and a disconnect between the coach and the players he's being
04:04given by Steve Eisenman.
04:05So, that power chain, the easiest thing to fix, I don't know if they're going to do.
04:12The second easiest thing to fix, I don't think they should do.
04:15I'm not blaming this on Todd McClellan.
04:17I think this truly becomes a player issue now, which means I blame head honcho and then players.
04:24You know what?
04:25It's funny because I don't think I've ever experienced that before, Mike, but, yeah, I feel the same.
04:30Like, Todd's done everything that he possibly could do, and it's just not working.
04:35And normally you're like, man, you got to fire the coach because he can't reach the players.
04:40I just don't think the players are out there really giving it 100% all the time.
04:46You'll see it in spurts where all of a sudden for seven minutes they can score four goals.
04:50But they can't give it to you for the full 60 minutes.
04:53So, I'm with you, and, yeah, for Larkin, I thought about this.
04:58If you have to move him, he has a no-trade clause.
05:01It's going to be very simple.
05:02I don't want you.
05:04No, no.
05:05We're going to take the sea away from you.
05:07I promise you he doesn't want to be here anymore.
05:09At that point, he will be open and receptive to go anywhere else because I don't think he wants to
05:16come back as a demoted captain next year.
05:19Well, here's the other thing.
05:20He could come back, but I'd like him as my second-line center.
05:23The problem is, look, case in point, they've messed around so long.
05:27Now DeBrinckit's at the end of his run.
05:29Here are your two choices with DeBrinckit.
05:31He's eligible for an extension.
05:33You could trade him, which would further deplete your goal scoring because he's the only guy on this team with
05:3840 goal potential.
05:40Or his new deal will be between $11 and $12 million.
05:44There are your outs.
05:45And oh, by the way, showtime is no time.
05:48He's gone.
05:49So you'll use his money, paid to Brrinckit, and you're still down a player.
05:55This really, and I want to get Kenny involved on this too because what I'm going to say next, I
05:58know it sounds crazy to some people where they're so close to the playoffs,
06:02but does any of this ever result in them winning a Stanley Cup?
06:06Is this really about just tinkering or is this Rico's term, a rebuild of the rebuild?
06:15And I know some chucklehead will call up and go, we have one of the seven best systems.
06:20What's really down there exactly that you're all boned up about?
06:25What, Nate Danielson and his 15 goal potential?
06:28Who?
06:30Who's down there that you're ready to take the wrapping off of and they're going to come up here and
06:36just right off the rip be Porter Martone?
06:38Like, guys, that's not there because Heisman drafts the same player.
06:43Two-way forwards.
06:44Two-way forwards.
06:45Two-way forwards.
06:46None of them have elite offensive ability.
06:49You don't even have anybody down there that can give Gibson a night off.
06:53Sure you do.
06:54You've been sitting on coaster for five years.
06:56And apparently he's not good enough to give Gibson a night off.
06:58I don't know what it is.
06:59I don't know what it is, but don't tell me there isn't a player down there that could have given
07:03him a night off.
07:03I'm with you.
07:04And it's like, what are you waiting for?
07:07At some point, use some of these chess pieces and show us what you got.
07:11I want to hear from Kenny on this.
07:12Now, I know Kenny wasn't in spite mode like me.
07:15I don't know, last night when the Jackets scored, I was Tiger at the 98 Masters.
07:20Because I want pain.
07:22I've had it.
07:22They've wasted enough of my time.
07:24Red shirt, fist pumping.
07:26I'd had it.
07:27I was so spiteful they were even in overtime.
07:30And then spiteful of the shootout looked like cocoon.
07:34Like Wilford Brimley on skates.
07:37It was sad.
07:39Kenny, go ahead.
07:40Well, you'll appreciate this because last night when they scored the shootout goal,
07:44I just basically turned the TV off of that channel and then started watching the other guys.
07:50And that was my evening.
07:51I was like, oh, okay.
07:52Did you do a little desk pop in the apartment?
07:54A little bang.
07:56You know, just pop one off.
07:57Yeah, no.
07:57That's exactly what I did.
07:59I have no emotion with this team.
08:00But I think what you brought up about trading one of the two of Larkin or Raymond is probably the
08:06right way to approach it.
08:07Because then you can package them and get some elite first-line talent.
08:13And it's not a complete rebuild.
08:15That's the point of this.
08:16You change the mix.
08:18You put somebody elite on the first line.
08:20And then you can move forward and be a playoff team, hopefully.
08:23What level of retooling do you believe they need, guys?
08:27This is not a full burn-it-down, build-it-back-up.
08:29That, to me, is much.
08:31It's a little too much.
08:33Possibly the most.
08:34Maybe a little bit too much.
08:35But I think the most you can hope for here is a complete...
08:40I mean, if you really want to...
08:42Do you think that this is a full rebuild?
08:44Do you think that that's what this can be done?
08:45I only bring it up because even if they were to creep in, they are chum in the water.
08:51And who on this roster is taking some huge leap that next year we begin a Stanley Cup window?
09:00Like, I want to know what it's all for.
09:02If you want to sell me that the goaltending will get better because of the presence of Kosa and Augustine,
09:09cool.
09:09But let's remember something.
09:10John Gibson was one of the 3-5 best goalies in the sport for about a 90-day run that
09:17propped you up.
09:19And then he regressed, obviously, because you played him every night.
09:22Okay, defensively, what else is there that's going to make you better?
09:27Let's go to the forward group.
09:28Who on the farm right now is a top-six forward with 30-goal upside?
09:33Not even who is in the farm that is capable of that.
09:36But also, A, this is almost akin to baseball.
09:39Where even if you bring somebody up, they're going to take at least a few years to mature, develop into
09:45a productive NHL player.
09:46In fact, when you bring up Kosa and Augustine, I've looked at the numbers on a lot of, call them
09:52good to above-average NHL goalies.
09:54They don't prime until they're in their mid-late 20s, 28, 29.
09:59So even if your solution is, oh, we'll bring up Kosa.
10:03Oh, Augustine will be the next thing.
10:04Maybe he will be in 10 years from now, maybe.
10:07I want to hear from the people, because it's not even a conversation anymore about Steve.
10:12That's dead and gone.
10:13We know how the vast majority of people feel.
10:15I don't think it's a McClellan conversation.
10:18I don't know what more the man can do.
10:20Look, let me put it to you this way.
10:23And look, I think a hell of a lot of Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond.
10:27I'm a big Mickey Redmond guy.
10:28I honestly feel like they should give Mickey the right to be Harry Doyle in Major League and let him
10:35sip on a little pop or something.
10:38Ken and Mickey sound so done with this team.
10:42Ken Daniels is a gentleman, and he's an excellent broadcaster.
10:46Ken Daniels, this is my perception.
10:49He sounds so effing done with this.
10:53So does Mickey.
10:53They sound so done that all I pictured was Bob Uecker in a tank top going, these guys stink.
11:02I mean, it is.
11:03You can hear it.
11:05It's like you almost want to be in there for the commercial break to hear what they really want to
11:09say that they can't say on the air.
11:11Mick openly admonished this team a week or two ago.
11:16He basically said that none of this is good enough, and I'm tired of watching it.
11:19He said something akin to that on the air.
11:22Yeah.
11:23I think they're very tired of this team.
11:25I want to hear from the hockey elite.
11:26What level of retooling is needed?
11:28Because I just thought Cookies was very dismissive of the Larkin thing, and it was a scared approach of the
11:33old, well, what am I getting back?
11:34I don't know that it matters anymore because I would argue, where does it end?
11:38Where does this truly end?
11:40Like, does this ever end with Dylan Larkin being a first-line center on this team and hoisting Lord Stanley's
11:48Cup and handing it to Steve Eisenman?
11:51Because I don't see that.
11:53And that's just it, and I think for a lot of people like Cookies, if you do the full rebuild,
11:59you're adding on another three, four years of not making the playoffs.
12:05Or you have the hope that every March, you've got a chance in making it.
12:09So that's why I think a lot of people are like, I want to do the move, but who are
12:12you going to get them with?
12:13But my thing, and look, it's a slight disagreement with Kenny.
12:16It's not a war.
12:17Oh, no.
12:18If they made a change at the top and they wanted to burn this thing to the ground, I would
12:22do it.
12:23Because right now, if you don't make it, and you have very, very little chance of making it.
12:28And I don't think you're crazy for holding that opinion.
12:31No, no, no.
12:31This is not a disagreement.
12:32No doubt.
12:32Yeah, I just disagree slightly, but no, it's definitely not a war, Kenny.
12:35It's just, I kind of view it, you have the longest playoff drought in the league.
12:39It didn't work, which means you can either bang your head off the toilet or pick a different direction.
12:47But then that opens up another door.
12:50But I don't care.
12:51But I think we can shake hands on the opinion that a direction change is needed in terms of the
12:55philosophy of how this team is being built.
12:57And look, it'd be easy for me to get on the air and just scream about, well, go get Austin
13:01Matthews.
13:01Easier said than done.
13:03Whole league's going to want him.
13:04You're not a zero-tax state.
13:06This isn't some sexy place to play.
13:09The last time the Wings made the playoffs, could Austin Matthews have a beer?
13:13You start to look at this, and it's like, yeah, the wing wheel means a lot to us.
13:18It used to mean something to the league.
13:20Right now, you've got as low a profile as anybody in the sport.
13:24You have the longest playoff drought in the league.
13:30Like, I don't know, man.
13:32I just.
13:33But if you tear it apart, who rebuilds it?
13:35Well, it would have to be someone else.
13:38But if your solution is full rebuild, tear it down, build it back up, then yeah.
13:42Yeah, and it's not a solution.
13:44I'm not pounding the desk saying they must.
13:46I'm saying I'm more open to it if someone told me, look, this group.
13:52And when you look at the career arc, like, look, Larkin's going to hit 30 here.
13:56Do I want to sign to Brinkett long-term?
13:59Is Lucas Raymond ever going to be more than what he is?
14:02When you start to look at this, is this group in any packaging going to be a Stanley Cup team?
14:11Pardon me if I've got a hard time when they can't even find a way to play a first period.
14:16They are the worst first period team in hockey that falls at the feet of the veteran leadership of this
14:21team.
14:21Period.
14:22And you know what I would love to?
14:24Where are all of you ball breakers?
14:28Hockey nerd bleeps.
14:30David Perron, the voice in the room.
14:33You were shaping your cray all over this guy at the deadline.
14:37Really?
14:37Nice back-to-back penalties last night.
14:40Real voice in the room.
14:43Get out.
14:44Nonsense.
14:45You traded for a guy who wasn't even healthy if there's sports hernia surgery.
14:49Oh, phenomenal.
14:50Phenomenal.
14:52Sorry.
14:52Okay.
14:53All right.
14:53Real.
14:53Who cares?
14:54Man, it's not even here this week.
