00:00:00Inside the ring, but outside the ring. Here's a perfect example. You look at the posters from 1981 and 1988.
00:00:06Sugar Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns on the left. Look at how they are young, the youthful look, and then the
00:00:11maturity look of the two businessmen on the right at 1988 and 1989.
00:00:16And of course, being very wealthy. And here's the man who is responsible for Sugar Ray Leonard and Tommy Hearns
00:00:21being as wealthy as they are.
00:00:22Henry Gluck, chairman of the board of Caesars. And this has turned into being another financial success for your corporate
00:00:28union organization.
00:00:30It's just a tremendous event, Jim. I think it's going into 80 countries. It's going to have a gross revenue
00:00:35of about $80 million.
00:00:37And we expect it to go. Approximately a billion people will see this. As a matter of fact, it's even
00:00:43going to be broadcast into China.
00:00:45So it's a tremendous showcase for Caesars to show what we're all about.
00:00:49Are these figures surpassing your original thoughts? Yes, they are. We knew it would be a sellout. We didn't think
00:00:57that would be a problem.
00:00:58But we didn't think that the pay-per-view and a closed circuit would be as big as this.
00:01:02And we didn't also think we'd get that much penetration in that many countries.
00:01:06Pay-per-view is really taking over.
00:01:08Yeah, pay-per-view is a bigger and bigger factor.
00:01:11And, of course, if you have two marquee events like this, two marquee fighters like this, you're going to get
00:01:17this kind of results.
00:01:18And we knew that going in. And this is one we've been waiting for a long, long time.
00:01:22And Al Bernstein and I were talking at the top of our program tonight about these two young men understand
00:01:26the economical aspect of it.
00:01:28And so they know that they have to be willing to do just about anything and everything to pull it
00:01:32off.
00:01:33Now, almost from the very beginning, both these men keep themselves in tremendous shape.
00:01:38You know, they fought for us a total of 14 times.
00:01:41So we know them real well. And we knew we were going to have a good match.
00:01:44Now, you know I have to ask you a prediction on tonight's fight.
00:01:47I tell you, I really can't predict because, you know, having fought for us for 14 times, these guys are
00:01:52like family.
00:01:53I know them both so well. And I just wish them both a lot of luck.
00:01:57There are no losers in this. Everybody's going to be a winner.
00:01:58All right, Henry, thank you so much.
00:02:00Thank you very much for having me.
00:02:01Okay, Henry Gluck, chairman of the board of Caesar's World.
00:02:04You know, we all, he was just talking about the Sugar Ray Leonard and Tommy Evers.
00:02:07And all of us here are very interested in what's going to happen in tonight's fight.
00:02:10But to get a little more perspective on what's going to happen between these two great fighters,
00:02:14let's go upstairs once again. Here's Albert C.
00:02:16Well, thank you, Jim. You know, the road to Leonard Hearns II has been long and winding.
00:02:21And each man has traveled it in his own way, each with his own kind of style and panache.
00:02:26And even though these two men are different, very different in style and substance,
00:02:31they share one thing in common. They are both terrific athletes.
00:02:36Let's take a look at both men.
00:02:49Sugar Ray Leonard has already left an indelible mark in boxing history.
00:02:54His imprint began in 1976 when he won the Olympic gold medal at Montreal.
00:03:00Leonard showed the flashy style and easy smile that were to propel him to fame and fortune in the pros
00:03:06and into the hearts of boxing fans, young and old.
00:03:10Early on, he learned the value of victory.
00:03:14The feeling of victory, the feeling of going up against the best,
00:03:19it's no great feeling.
00:03:21There is a, I go into a trance. I really do.
00:03:26His first professional championship came in a grueling battle against Wilfredo Benitez.
00:03:31Leonard forcing a stoppage in the 15th round.
00:03:35But in the first of two memorable fights against former lightweight champ Roberto Duran,
00:03:40Leonard went toe-to-toe, matching the macho of the hands of stone.
00:03:49He tasted defeat for the first time, ironically in Montreal, site of his Olympic triumph.
00:03:55But Duran's celebration was short-lived.
00:04:01The rematch saw a different Leonard, dancing and walking.
00:04:10And a different Duran, despondent and defeatist.
00:04:20When it ended, Duran was muttering,
00:04:22No más, no more.
00:04:24And Leonard had avenged his only defeat.
00:04:38Sugar Ray moved up to 154 pounds to win his second round
00:04:42with a knockout of Ayub Kaluli.
00:04:51And he showed his gymnastic skills as well.
00:04:55Then came the historic welterweight unification against unbeaten Thomas Hearns.
00:05:00Leonard scoring a stunning knockout victory.
00:05:06After just one fight in four years,
00:05:09Sugar Ray came out of retirement to win the biggest fight of his life,
00:05:12an upset decision over middleweight champion, marvelous Marvin Hagler.
00:05:32Leonard claimed his third title and retired again,
00:05:35but only briefly, returning to win two titles in the same night,
00:05:39including the WBC light heavyweight crown held by Canadian Donnie Lalonde.
00:05:50There's a bit of insecurity that various guys have had with me.
00:05:58And it's mostly due to the type of exposure
00:06:02because of what I do outside the ring,
00:06:04because of the endorsements and what have you.
00:06:07Congratulations, kid.
00:06:08But I want a rematch.
00:06:10Sugar Ray talking boxing, new from Tiger.
00:06:13So give yourself a round of applause and thank Jesus once again.
00:06:17Bye-bye, I'll see you soon.
00:06:23Still looming large in front of Leonard
00:06:25is the man who has waited eight long years to steal the spotlight.
00:06:30I beat Tommy in 81.
00:06:31I had one fight, I retired.
00:06:34Two years limbo, came back for one time,
00:06:37came back, retired.
00:06:38Three years later, Tommy's fighting.
00:06:40Tommy, then all of a sudden I beat Hagler.
00:06:42Then Tommy's having problems with James Kitchen and Barkley.
00:06:46I didn't think it was going to happen,
00:06:48but certain things are predestined.
00:06:55I've been in this man's shadow for a long time.
00:06:59Basically, ever since I started my career, professional career,
00:07:05I've been in the shadow of Ray Leonard.
00:07:08I don't like being secondary, you know.
00:07:12I want to be right there on top.
00:07:14And that's what, that's the force behind me.
00:07:17That's what helped push me and motivate me.
00:07:21The hitman acquired his nickname
00:07:23and built his reputation with a string of knockouts.
00:07:26I wanted him to develop a knockout record.
00:07:29And the knockout record is what began to get an attention
00:07:31because realizing that he didn't have a gold medal
00:07:35and at the same time he was moving along
00:07:37right shortly after Sugar Ray Leonard turned professional,
00:07:41we had to have something going for us to get attention.
00:07:44Hearns won his first title with a knockout
00:07:46of the devastating Mexican puncher Pepino Cuevas.
00:07:52The hitman had truly arrived.
00:07:54For me, winning one title,
00:07:56one world title wasn't enough for me.
00:07:59And after winning that first world title,
00:08:02I said to myself that,
00:08:05you can do it.
00:08:07You can win four world titles.
00:08:10Tommy rebounded from his loss to Leonard
00:08:12and showed his boxing skills
00:08:14in a decision over the KG Wilfred Benitez.
00:08:17Using his jab and ring movement
00:08:19instead of going for the knockout.
00:08:26Moving up to 175 pounds,
00:08:29Hearns showed he still had punching power
00:08:31when he lifted the crown from champion Denis Andres.
00:08:36It was his third title.
00:08:40Then he made boxing history
00:08:41by stopping Argentine veteran Juan Roldan
00:08:44for title number four.
00:08:47The winner by a knockout.
00:08:49And you, WBZ,
00:08:51Finale-League Kinchin World Cup,
00:08:54the hitman, Hearns.
00:09:00In his last fight,
00:09:02Hearns survived an early knockdown
00:09:04by James Kinchin,
00:09:05to notch his fifth world title,
00:09:07this time at 168 pounds.
00:09:10The hitman has had his share of recognition.
00:09:14But his losses to Leonard and Hagler
00:09:16seem to play on his mind.
00:09:30Those difficult defeats
00:09:31may have contributed
00:09:32to his knockout at the hands
00:09:34of underdog Iran Barkley,
00:09:35a fight which jolted him
00:09:37into the reality
00:09:38of his role in boxing history.
00:09:42I think Thomas needs his victory
00:09:45to gain a spot in history.
00:09:47I think otherwise,
00:09:48for the most part,
00:09:48I think most of our accomplishments
00:09:50are going to be
00:09:52very much diluted.
00:09:54And he'll probably be remembered
00:09:55as a fighter
00:09:56who gave the fans of the 80s
00:09:58a lot of excitement,
00:09:59maybe more than any one fighter
00:10:01for a 10-year period of time,
00:10:03but still never was able
00:10:06to win the big fights,
00:10:08the big accomplishments,
00:10:09you know.
00:10:10And I think that's where
00:10:11history would remember Thomas Ernst,
00:10:13if we don't win this fight.
00:10:14And we want to win it
00:10:15very, very big
00:10:16and convincingly.
00:10:18I can give up everything
00:10:21that I have accomplished
00:10:23in this boxing game today.
00:10:26If I actually defy world title,
00:10:28I can just take them
00:10:29and give them all back
00:10:32for just this one,
00:10:34June 12th.
00:10:50Well, there's no one
00:10:51in this crowd
00:10:52that doesn't remember
00:10:53all that about Tommy Hearns
00:10:54and Sugar Ray Leonard.
00:10:55That's etched
00:10:55into our consciousness.
00:10:57They hope tonight
00:10:57we'll make some new memories.
00:10:59Well, Leonard Hearns 2,
00:11:01The War,
00:11:02is being brought to you
00:11:03by Budweiser.
00:11:04For all you do,
00:11:05this Bud's for you.
00:11:08And so the moment is at hand.
00:11:10All the what-ifs
00:11:10shortly will become academic.
00:11:12Sugar Ray Leonard
00:11:12and Tommy Hearns,
00:11:13they're finally about
00:11:14to do battle
00:11:15to help guide you
00:11:16through this match.
00:11:17Here's Tim Ryan,
00:11:18Gil Clancy,
00:11:19and Marvin Hagler.
00:11:21All right,
00:11:22at ringside,
00:11:22we've got a full house
00:11:23here in anticipation
00:11:24of Hearns Leonard 2.
00:11:26And Gil,
00:11:27a lot of talk this week,
00:11:28particularly by Thomas Hearns
00:11:29at the final press conference,
00:11:30about the body
00:11:31of Sugar Ray Leonard.
00:11:33In fact,
00:11:33Hearns accusing him
00:11:34of using steroids.
00:11:36Well, you know,
00:11:36Ray is a solid fighter now.
00:11:38He's a solid middleweight.
00:11:39Of course,
00:11:40they had a private agreement
00:11:42despite the fact
00:11:43that it's a 168-pound championship.
00:11:45They had a private agreement
00:11:47that both fighters
00:11:48had to weigh 163 1⁄2
00:11:50or under
00:11:50or forfeit $2 million
00:11:52to the other fighter.
00:11:54I think that's going
00:11:55to hurt Tommy Hearns.
00:11:56He came in 162 1⁄2.
00:11:57He looked a little drawn to me.
00:11:59Ray was a strong 160.
00:12:01All right,
00:12:02Marvin Hagler,
00:12:03what about this word
00:12:03that Tommy Hearns
00:12:05may have been drying out
00:12:06a little to get down
00:12:06to that money weight,
00:12:07if you will?
00:12:08What do you think of that?
00:12:09Well, this is a WBC
00:12:10super middleweight title fight.
00:12:12And I believe that
00:12:13the 168-pound
00:12:14is what he should have done.
00:12:15Forget all that
00:12:16other stuff.
00:12:17That would be the limit
00:12:19that I would come in at.
00:12:20All right.
00:12:21Well, Tommy Hearns
00:12:21is on his way to ringside.
00:12:23We'll find out
00:12:23whether the weight
00:12:25has had any effect
00:12:26or not.
00:12:26Here he is,
00:12:27five-time
00:12:28world champion
00:12:30working tonight
00:12:31in the biggest fight
00:12:32of his life
00:12:32under the stress
00:12:33of the circumstances
00:12:34in his hometown of Detroit.
00:12:36His brother Henry
00:12:37involved in a murder charges
00:12:39involving a young woman
00:12:40killed there on Saturday night.
00:12:41And you have to wonder
00:12:42about the possible
00:12:43emotional effect of that.
00:12:45Now,
00:12:46as we watch him come in,
00:12:48Marvin,
00:12:48I'd also like to have you
00:12:49comment on his last fight.
00:12:51A lot of concern
00:12:52about whether
00:12:53his legs
00:12:54are going to hold up,
00:12:55which he had some problems
00:12:56with against James Kinchin.
00:12:57No,
00:12:58I don't believe so.
00:12:59I think
00:12:59on a kitchen fight,
00:13:00I still believe
00:13:01that he has to do it.
00:13:04I still believe
00:13:05he has to do it.
00:13:05It was a great fight,
00:13:06but I still believe
00:13:07he has to do it.
00:13:09Sugar Ray Leonard
00:13:10has talked about
00:13:11the chin and legs
00:13:12of Thomas Hearns
00:13:14and has been somewhat
00:13:17deprecating about them,
00:13:18if you will.
00:13:19Tommy Hearns,
00:13:20many people,
00:13:21myself included,
00:13:22feels that at this weight
00:13:24is just about
00:13:25where he is at
00:13:25his most effective.
00:13:27And Tommy Hearns
00:13:29weighed in
00:13:30at 162 and a half,
00:13:32not concerned at all
00:13:33about whether or not
00:13:34he made it for the money
00:13:36or whether
00:13:37he should have come in
00:13:38at the higher weight.
00:13:39He feels comfortable.
00:13:40Now,
00:13:41Sugar Ray Leonard,
00:13:41on the other hand,
00:13:42guilt is to go back
00:13:43to Ray's weight
00:13:44at 160 pounds.
00:13:46I think some people
00:13:47may still feel,
00:13:48even though he beat
00:13:49a light heavyweight
00:13:49in Donnie Lalonde,
00:13:50but maybe he's not
00:13:51a true middleweight.
00:13:52Is this the most
00:13:53comfortable way
00:13:54he could be at?
00:13:54I think so.
00:13:55I think Ray's weight
00:13:56is absolutely good.
00:13:57Look at the way
00:13:57he's pumped up there.
00:13:58It looks like he's
00:13:58got a bicycle pump
00:13:59underneath,
00:14:00pumping up those shoulders.
00:14:02Well,
00:14:02that's an interesting
00:14:03striked outfit
00:14:04he's got for the occasion
00:14:05here,
00:14:05a new look for Sugar Ray Leonard,
00:14:07always sartorially splendid,
00:14:10making his way
00:14:11to the ring.
00:14:13And today at the weigh-in,
00:14:15he wore a specially designed
00:14:17t-shirt that said
00:14:18pre-South Africa
00:14:19as he was making
00:14:21his own statement
00:14:21this morning
00:14:22about conditions
00:14:23over there.
00:14:25Sugar Ray Leonard
00:14:26has been very calm,
00:14:27very relaxed.
00:14:28He's been out watching
00:14:29his brother Roger
00:14:30play tennis
00:14:31much of the week
00:14:31before and after workouts,
00:14:32and certainly he's been
00:14:34a very confident fighter.
00:14:35One thing that will be
00:14:37interesting to see
00:14:37is how the crowd responds.
00:14:39I know, Gil Clancy,
00:14:40you thought that
00:14:40maybe the majority
00:14:42of this crowd tonight
00:14:43will be for Tommy Hearn.
00:14:44Why so?
00:14:45Well, I just think
00:14:46he's the underdog.
00:14:47He's been on a quest
00:14:48for so long
00:14:48and raised in on such a high role.
00:14:50People tend to root
00:14:51for the underdog.
00:14:53And, of course,
00:14:54even during the promotion,
00:14:55while it was hype,
00:14:57you had a sense
00:14:57that Sugar Ray Leonard
00:14:58perhaps treating
00:14:59Tommy Hearns
00:15:00a little arrogantly,
00:15:01and I don't think
00:15:02Tommy's taken too kindly
00:15:03to some of the things
00:15:04that he said.
00:15:05But, Marvin Hagler,
00:15:06does it matter much
00:15:07what your opponent
00:15:08has been saying publicly
00:15:09coming into a big fight?
00:15:10Oh, I never hear him anywhere.
00:15:12It doesn't make no difference.
00:15:13Let's get it on.
00:15:16They didn't say to me,
00:15:17you're going to pay for it
00:15:18when I get in there.
00:15:19I'm sure that's what
00:15:20Tommy Hearns has felt, too.
00:15:21And there you see
00:15:22a very determined
00:15:23Sugar Ray Leonard.
00:15:24And I suppose
00:15:25if he were measuring
00:15:26on an applause meter
00:15:27that to this point
00:15:28as he steps between
00:15:29the ropes
00:15:30and Tommy Hearns
00:15:31has had perhaps
00:15:32a little bigger response.
00:15:33But now here they come
00:15:34with Sugar Ray Leonard fans.
00:15:38See the back of that role.
00:15:41And it says,
00:15:42and that is freedom
00:15:46in African dialect.
00:15:48And certainly, again,
00:15:49a follow-up to his
00:15:55statement this morning
00:15:56with his T-shirt.
00:15:57And this is in tribute
00:15:58to Nelson Mandela
00:16:00who is still in prison
00:16:02in South Africa.
00:16:03And Ray has been learning
00:16:05a lot about those conditions
00:16:06recently.
00:16:07And so there he is now
00:16:08marking the 25th anniversary
00:16:10in prison of Nelson Mandela
00:16:12in South Africa.
00:16:1335-1.
00:16:14The only loss to the man
00:16:16we showed you earlier,
00:16:17Roberto Duran,
00:16:18who's here doing the telecast
00:16:20on the Spanish-language simulcast
00:16:22of tonight's big fight.
00:16:2433 years of age last month.
00:16:27To Ray Leonard.
00:16:28Thomas Hearns,
00:16:2830 years of age.
00:16:30And as it comes as no surprise,
00:16:32he's still taller than Tommy
00:16:33as he was eight years ago.
00:16:35And coming in at 162-1⁄2.
00:16:37Now that reach
00:16:38and that jab, Gil Clancy,
00:16:40were a big factor
00:16:40in the early going
00:16:41in fight number one.
00:16:43Do you expect him to
00:16:44try and start out
00:16:45the same way tonight?
00:16:45Or will he follow
00:16:47the accepted gospel
00:16:48because maybe
00:16:49of questionable legs
00:16:50he's going to go
00:16:50right after Ray?
00:16:51No, I think that the last fight
00:16:53Ray Leonard was bouncing
00:16:54around side to side
00:16:55giving Tommy Hearns
00:16:56plenty of room
00:16:57to use that jab.
00:16:58I think this time
00:16:59I think Tommy's going to
00:17:00come out like a warrior
00:17:01and I think Ray's going to
00:17:02try to get inside
00:17:02and make a war out of it.
00:17:04I think a lot of excitement
00:17:05to do.
00:17:06Well, and the average
00:17:07jabs per round,
00:17:08you can see things have changed
00:17:09for Hearns
00:17:10quite significantly
00:17:11against Leonard 1.
00:17:12He threw 29,
00:17:13landed 14.
00:17:14He threw more
00:17:15in his last fight
00:17:16against James Kinchin
00:17:17but landed fewer of them.
00:17:18So perhaps not
00:17:19quite the effective weapon
00:17:20that it has been
00:17:21earlier in his career.
00:17:22Well, tonight
00:17:23under the WBC rules,
00:17:24three judges will score
00:17:25the fight on the
00:17:2610-point must system.
00:17:27No standing eight count,
00:17:28no three knockdown rule.
00:17:30That means the referee
00:17:30has discretion
00:17:31if there are more than three
00:17:33and a fighter can be saved
00:17:34by the bell on the 12th
00:17:35and final round only.
00:17:38And now let's go up
00:17:39to our ring announcer
00:17:40for the introductions
00:17:41and the anthems,
00:17:41Michael Buffer.

00:18:04what so proudly we hailed

00:18:12whose broad stripes and bright stars
00:18:15through the perilous fight
00:18:19o'er the ramparts we watched
00:18:23were so gallantly streaming.
00:18:28And the rocket's red glare
00:18:31the bombs bursting in air
00:18:36gave proof through the night
00:18:40that our flag was still there
00:18:44Oh, say does that star-spangled

00:21:56Super Middleweight
00:21:58Champion of the World,
00:22:00Sugar,
00:22:01William Lindner!
00:22:15Okay, I spoke to both
00:22:16and everybody's in the dressing room.
00:22:18I'm cautioning you again.
00:22:19Obey my commands at all times.
00:22:21But there's no question.
00:22:22Shake hands.
00:22:22Good luck.
00:22:24No nonsense.
00:22:25Richard Steele, the referee,
00:22:27as usual,
00:22:28very concise self,
00:22:29and we're ready to go.
00:22:31The war.
00:22:32Leonard Hearns, two.
00:22:34Thomas Hearns,
00:22:35162 and a half.
00:22:36Ray Leonard at 160.
00:22:38Scheduled for 12.
00:22:39Tim Ryan,
00:22:40Gil Clancy,
00:22:41marvelous Marvin Hangler
00:22:42at ringside.
00:22:43And the historic boxing match
00:22:45about to begin.
00:22:47Leonard in the strike,
00:22:49red and white trunks,
00:22:50waiting for turns
00:22:51in the middle of the ring
00:22:52and gold.
00:22:54And you know,
00:22:54Tim Leonard seems strangely
00:22:55subdued
00:22:57all during the introductions.
00:22:58Very quiet,
00:22:59not bouncing around too much.
00:23:07First punch of the fight,
00:23:08a flicking jab
00:23:09blocked by Leonard.
00:23:11Leonard is starting this fight
00:23:13the same way he did
00:23:14the first fight,
00:23:15side to side,
00:23:15moving around,
00:23:16which is a surprise to me.
00:23:22Early chanting of Tommy
00:23:24from the Hearns fans,
00:23:25and I would say so far
00:23:26an even split
00:23:28in fan affection
00:23:29from what we can hear.
00:23:46I like the way
00:23:47how they start him off now.
00:23:49Being very cautious,
00:23:50both of them.
00:23:52Any surprise in that,
00:23:53you know?
00:23:54No, no surprise at all,
00:23:55but I think Leonard
00:23:56wants to end this fight
00:23:57very early,
00:23:58both of them, really.
00:23:59You can expect anything
00:24:00in this fight.
00:24:04Leonard trying to jab up
00:24:06through that defense
00:24:07of the longer arm turns.
00:24:09I don't understand
00:24:10how come Tommy's not
00:24:12shooting that right hand
00:24:13when he's laying down
00:24:13there like that.
00:24:16You know,
00:24:16I don't like that dragging
00:24:18jab when Leonard throws
00:24:19that jab to the body either.
00:24:20Well, he's got something
00:24:21he's up his sleeve, bro.
00:24:23Good defense by Leonard
00:24:24on the right hand
00:24:25from Hearns.
00:24:25He blocked it.
00:24:38He's not the same two athletes
00:24:40obviously of eight years ago,
00:24:42but they're as determined,
00:24:44as competitive,
00:24:44and yet a lot of great action
00:24:46they've provided
00:24:47in the intervening years.
00:24:50And just about 20 pounds
00:24:51heavier than they were
00:24:53eight years ago.
00:24:57Wild swinging left
00:24:59with the taller Hearns
00:25:00ducking under it.
00:25:03Right hand scored by Leonard.
00:25:05And Hearns says,
00:25:06yeah, you got me.
00:25:07No problem.
00:25:09It could develop into a problem.
00:25:11Hearns can be hit
00:25:12with right hands.
00:25:15Hearns seems a little tight.
00:25:18You know,
00:25:18Emmanuel Stewart said
00:25:19that's going to be the key.
00:25:20If Tommy can take
00:25:21on his punch and come back.
00:25:24The looping overhand
00:25:25right by Leonard
00:25:25who just saw
00:25:26something he's been working
00:25:27on in training.
00:25:38Final seconds of round one.
00:25:40Eight years later
00:25:42at Caesars Palace.
00:25:44A long-awaited rematch.
00:25:45Most thought
00:25:45would never happen
00:25:46and were underway.
00:25:58He's not as fast as Lon.
00:25:59You understand?
00:26:00He's not as fast as Lon.
00:26:03He's looking a little...
00:26:05Looking good.
00:26:05Keep going to start
00:26:06pumping his arms
00:26:07a little bit more now, okay?
00:26:08Because you're breaking up
00:26:08his long tangles.
00:26:09Everything...
00:26:09Set him up.
00:26:10Beautiful.
00:26:11You heard, Manny Stewart?
00:26:12You see everything
00:26:12you can do in that round
00:26:13is the ball you can do.
00:26:14You saw it.
00:26:14You know him keep moving.
00:26:16He's going to go
00:26:16for every fight you make.
00:26:18But I've got to have
00:26:18that one-two at him.
00:26:19All right?
00:26:21See, we can do it
00:26:21off a double stick.
00:26:23That's Pepe Correa
00:26:24has replaced Angelo Dundee
00:26:26in the corner
00:26:26of Sugar Ray Leonard.
00:26:29Dundee giving great credit
00:26:30for his work
00:26:30in the first fight.
00:26:32And Leonard was behind
00:26:33on the cards
00:26:34rallying him saying
00:26:35you're blowing it, kid.
00:26:36You're blowing it, son.
00:26:39And Leonard rallied
00:26:40to score the 14th round
00:26:41knockout.
00:26:44You know they're fighting
00:26:45in 90 degree heat
00:26:46and Manny Stewart
00:26:46was fanning
00:26:48Tommy with a towel
00:26:48which is not a bad idea.
00:26:50Temperature has dropped
00:26:51to a cruel 90 degrees
00:26:53compared to more than 120.
00:26:56And this evening began
00:26:57at 6 p.m. Pacific time
00:26:59in Las Vegas.
00:26:59Round two scheduled for 12.
00:27:01You know I'm surprised
00:27:02to see Leonard moving
00:27:03around the way he is
00:27:04then because in the first
00:27:05fight he gave away
00:27:06the first five rounds
00:27:06with just exactly those tactics
00:27:08and then he settled down
00:27:09and he did much better
00:27:10when he fought flatfoot.
00:27:11That's the way I thought
00:27:12they'd fight the fight.
00:27:17Well, you know what's
00:27:18interesting in this fight
00:27:19you know both of them
00:27:19go down now
00:27:20so that's what everybody's
00:27:21waiting for.
00:27:22It's no secret anymore.
00:27:25Both have been down indeed.
00:27:28He's suffering knockout
00:27:30defeat at the hands
00:27:30of Iran Barkley
00:27:31and Marvin Haggard of course.
00:27:35Knocked down by James Kinchin
00:27:37in his last outing
00:27:38before coming on
00:27:46was starting off you can see
00:27:48they look look up
00:27:49look very slow.
00:27:51No hand speed like
00:27:52they used to have.
00:27:54On a bigger men.
00:27:56You can see that it's
00:27:57going big power to the body.
00:27:58There's a right to the body
00:27:59from Leonard.
00:28:00That's where he got her
00:28:01and got the first fight
00:28:02was to the body.
00:28:07Right hand try by Hermes
00:28:09high over the shoulder
00:28:10of Leonard.
00:28:13Miller's waiting for him
00:28:14to try it again
00:28:15with the right hand
00:28:16so he can count it.
00:28:20They look like two
00:28:21fencers at this point
00:28:22in round two
00:28:24waiting to
00:28:25see the other thrust
00:28:26and then make the wrong
00:28:27parry back.
00:28:34Right hand just short
00:28:35from Hermes
00:28:36at the opening
00:28:37but Leonard
00:28:39pulled his head back.
00:28:41And it got Leonard's
00:28:42attention to him.
00:28:44First time I see someone
00:28:45push somebody off the ring
00:28:47and tell them
00:28:48good luck.
00:28:50Short again from Hermes
00:28:51on the last right hand.
00:28:53Leonard missing
00:28:53with a while left.
00:28:54You know Leonard is
00:28:55depending on his
00:28:56punching ball.
00:28:57He's been training that way
00:28:58to hurt guys
00:28:59with every punch.
00:29:02You can see he didn't
00:29:03use that hand speed
00:29:03like he had years before.
00:29:05He's going to bomb you
00:29:05with one punch at a time
00:29:07which is not the usual
00:29:09of Ray Leonard.
00:29:10He gets caught now
00:29:11with that type of tactics.
00:29:17Hermes smiling confidently
00:29:19as again Leonard short.
00:29:22He can't raise the chin
00:29:24as he has hands.
00:29:25Aaron short.
00:29:30Leonard's having trouble
00:29:31getting by that left hand
00:29:32of Tommy Hearns.
00:29:34He's trying to set the
00:29:35Tommy in so he can
00:29:36throw the right hand.
00:29:38Left scored by Leonard.
00:29:39His best punch of the fight
00:29:40thus far.
00:29:41Final seconds round two.
00:29:44You can see Leonard
00:29:45trying to use
00:29:46all kinds of sight.
00:29:47Leonard's switching to
00:29:48Southpaw
00:29:48and he got tagged
00:29:49by Tommy Hearns.
00:29:52Now that's something
00:29:53that we saw in training
00:29:54and Ray made light of it.
00:29:55Said he was just doing it
00:29:56for fun.
00:29:57He showed it to Hearns
00:29:58and Hearns unloaded
00:30:00on him, Gil.
00:30:00Yeah, he sure did.
00:30:01Hit him with a nice
00:30:01straight right hand.
00:30:03Now I'm going to put
00:30:04a governor jab
00:30:05and put a hard right hand
00:30:06behind him.
00:30:06But finish on that left hook.
00:30:08He's there for you
00:30:08right hand left hook.
00:30:09Let's go with it.
00:30:10Every time you make
00:30:11a little freeze move
00:30:11he's freezing.
00:30:12Throw that one to it
00:30:13when you do that.
00:30:14Finish with that left hook.
00:30:16All right.
00:30:16We're looking for it.
00:30:17Get them shoulders moving.
00:30:19Yeah.
00:30:19Don't stand stationary
00:30:20in front of you.
00:30:21Doesn't look like
00:30:22that many punches been thrown.
00:30:24Doesn't seem that way
00:30:24to me either.
00:30:25They have Leonard landing
00:30:26more punches than Hearns.
00:30:28I thought it was
00:30:28the other way around.
00:30:30Well, that's the way
00:30:30we've scored it now.
00:30:31Two rounds on our card
00:30:32for Thomas Hearns.
00:30:33Between Phil Clancy.
00:30:34Me, do you agree, Marvin?
00:30:35Well, Leonard's trying
00:30:36to intimidate Tommy.
00:30:37Trying to make him do
00:30:38things that make him mad
00:30:40out there.
00:30:41Make him come get
00:30:42a little hard with his punches.
00:30:43We're going to jam.
00:30:45If he's nice and loose
00:30:46and just flickering,
00:30:46he'll be a lot better.
00:30:47And hear Emmanuel Stewart
00:30:48saying to Tommy Hearns,
00:30:49just keep working that jab.
00:30:51Jose Pepe Correa,
00:30:53a very live character
00:30:54in the corner of
00:30:55Sideree Leonard
00:30:56to quite a contrast
00:30:57of 1981
00:30:58and the experienced
00:31:00Angelo Dundee.
00:31:01Correa worked briefly
00:31:02with IVF weatherweight champion
00:31:03Simon Brown.
00:31:05Left hand is now with Leonard.
00:31:12Round three scheduled for 12.
00:31:14Tim Ryan, marvelous Marva Hagin,
00:31:15Joe Clancy.
00:31:17Tom's got a left hand through.
00:31:20Every time Ray starts
00:31:21to make any kind
00:31:22of a move at all time,
00:31:23he pops that left hand up.
00:31:25He's keeping Leonard
00:31:25right at the range
00:31:26he wants him in
00:31:27right in his moment.
00:31:29You kind of wonder,
00:31:30looking at Ray right now,
00:31:31why would he want
00:31:32this fight anyway?
00:31:35Well, I think you answered
00:31:37that question there
00:31:38before the fight, Marvin.
00:31:39You think that he needs
00:31:40to somehow redeem himself
00:31:42from the way you judged
00:31:43as a performance over you.
00:31:45Exactly.
00:31:46But you know what's happening,
00:31:46though?
00:31:47He's got a better fighter here.
00:31:48You don't have a guy
00:31:48like Adani Kalan in there.
00:31:51He's got a real champion in there.
00:31:52Well, also, Ray doesn't agree
00:31:54with your thinking
00:31:54about his victory over you.
00:31:56Yeah, I know.
00:31:58That's great.
00:32:00Turns jabbing effectively.
00:32:01Emmanuel Stewart,
00:32:03the manager and trainer,
00:32:04said that he would do this
00:32:05and expected that
00:32:07as a fight went on,
00:32:07Gillett would work in his favor,
00:32:09that he would be the stronger man
00:32:10in the later round.
00:32:11Again, he's popping
00:32:12and scoring points, Tim.
00:32:15A little short.
00:32:16A little short with it.
00:32:17It landed,
00:32:18but Leonard picked it up.
00:32:21But you see,
00:32:22when you throw a punch
00:32:22like that, Tim,
00:32:23it keeps the other guy
00:32:24and intimidates him a little bit.
00:32:26It keeps him from coming in.
00:32:27See, Leonard knows right now
00:32:28he's a little confident
00:32:29that Tommy don't have no chin
00:32:30and I think that's what
00:32:31he's aiming for.
00:32:32Well, he may be aiming
00:32:33for a big right hand!
00:32:35Right to the jaw of Leonard.
00:32:37Leonard took it,
00:32:37but it was a big shot.
00:32:39And another one
00:32:40sends him down.
00:32:41The right hand of the year
00:32:42of Leonard.
00:32:44It was the short right hand
00:32:48that staggered Leonard
00:32:50that really hurt him,
00:32:51although he tried to show
00:32:51that it didn't.
00:32:52But it did.
00:32:54Hearns bangs the hook
00:32:55to the body.
00:32:57The right to the body.
00:32:59The crowd roaring
00:33:00here at Caesars Palace.
00:33:02The right to the chest
00:33:03from Hearns.
00:33:08Leonard looks very unsteady
00:33:10to me, trying to gather himself,
00:33:12not punching.
00:33:13He's got to stay on top
00:33:14of Leonard right now.
00:33:15That's what Hearns has to do.
00:33:16I think Tommy's taking
00:33:17a little too much time.
00:33:18He's taking a little too much time.
00:33:18Too much time.
00:33:19Too much time.
00:33:19To the left.
00:33:20To the cheekbone.
00:33:22Short for the right hand.
00:33:25Tommy can't get careless in there
00:33:26because Leonard's trying to be slick.
00:33:29He's bluffing right now.
00:33:33Tommy shouldn't let him
00:33:34relax so much like this.
00:33:36Overhand right.
00:33:37Missed by Leonard.
00:33:38Right back from Hearns.
00:33:39Not much on him.
00:33:40Again, Leonard is trying
00:33:41to punch too hard, Tim.
00:33:43Right hand.
00:33:43Climbing is not there.
00:33:44Landed by Hearns.
00:33:45Right to the body
00:33:46back from Leonard.
00:33:49In the round three.
00:34:09Let's go back and see the knockdown.
00:34:12Here's Tommy Spanky.
00:34:13Beautiful.
00:34:14Followed in.
00:34:14And it was on the top of the head,
00:34:16Tim.
00:34:16Looked like a punch that almost missed.
00:34:18Right.
00:34:18That's the one that sent him
00:34:19to the canvas.
00:34:20But it was a clean right
00:34:21before that that really
00:34:22did the damage.
00:34:23Not the one that knocked him down.
00:34:24He was stunned.
00:34:25He tried to pretend
00:34:26that he wasn't hurt.
00:34:27But he was already shaken.
00:34:29Exactly what has happened.
00:34:30He's being active.
00:34:34That's the right hand
00:34:35you're talking about, Tim.
00:34:36They both threw right hands.
00:34:37Again, that was a chopper punch.
00:34:39That's the one.
00:34:39But Tommy knew he hurt him.
00:34:41You can see Ray here
00:34:42trying to act like
00:34:43it didn't hurt him.
00:34:43And it wasn't much of a punch
00:34:44that sent him down.
00:34:45It was that one you saw
00:34:47a moment ago
00:34:47that did the damage.
00:34:49Round number four.
00:34:50There was also a little delay.
00:34:53That's right, Marvin.
00:34:54It was a little delayed reaction.
00:34:55A short, chomping right from Hearns.
00:34:57I expect that he needed to come out now
00:34:59trying to act as sure
00:35:00that he wasn't hurt at all
00:35:02and trying to take it back to Tommy.
00:35:08Hearns a little looser
00:35:09with the jazz now.
00:35:10The jab.
00:35:10A little more confident
00:35:11than you might expect.
00:35:12In this corner told
00:35:13I want him to go out
00:35:14and fight him
00:35:15and that's the only way to do it.
00:35:17Well, he was very successful
00:35:18using that left hand.
00:35:19I just keep using that left hand
00:35:21all night.
00:35:21Make great great reach
00:35:23and then nail him
00:35:23when he reaches.
00:35:26Ray's having a lot of trouble
00:35:27getting any distance
00:35:28on Tommy up to this point.
00:35:32And as long as they stay
00:35:33in long range,
00:35:34Hearns is going to score
00:35:35those points.
00:35:38He has to get inside that jab.
00:35:40Starts banging to the body.
00:35:42This week he's looking
00:35:42for the big hook.
00:35:43He's waiting for Tommy
00:35:44to jazz his encounter.
00:35:46You have to take the confidence
00:35:47out of the eyes of Thomas Hearns
00:35:49because it's apparent right now
00:35:50Thomas Hearns believes
00:35:52he's the boss.
00:35:53This is not the Thomas Hearns
00:35:55that we saw fight James Kinchin.
00:35:57That's for sure.
00:35:59He looks a lot more better today.
00:36:02He said he wasn't motivated
00:36:03against Kinchin.
00:36:04He said he looks like
00:36:05a different fighter.
00:36:06There's that overhand right
00:36:07tried by Leonard
00:36:08that grazed Hearns.
00:36:10and then Ray came back
00:36:11with a body attack.
00:36:13Hearns would have to keep
00:36:14the pressure on Leonard.
00:36:15So Tommy's starting to drop
00:36:16that left hand now though,
00:36:17Marvin.
00:36:18Look where it is.
00:36:19That could be a bad mistake
00:36:20because Leonard's looking for that.
00:36:22Tommy should fight him
00:36:22and that's the way to fight him.
00:36:24Now Leonard knows
00:36:25he's got to fight him.
00:36:26And he should still just
00:36:27draw Ray Leonard
00:36:28to keep him up.
00:36:30Leonard just can't get
00:36:31the proper distance.
00:36:33He's trying for the big knockout.
00:36:35He's looking for the chin.
00:36:35You know Tommy's got
00:36:36that weak chin there.
00:36:37Left hand blocked by Hearns
00:36:39handily with his right-right.
00:36:49Short right landed by Hearns.
00:36:51Now bangs to the arms
00:36:52of Tommy Hearns.
00:36:54And a good straight right hand.
00:36:58Tried to wing that overhand
00:37:00right again.
00:37:03Hearns fires back,
00:37:04scores a right of his own.
00:37:08Misses badly with a right.
00:37:09That was the go-home punch though,
00:37:11Tim.
00:37:11He was able to get away with it.
00:37:15Now Hearns tying Leonard up
00:37:17for the first time in the bout.
00:37:22Combination by Hearns.
00:37:25No full impact with a right,
00:37:27but it did score.
00:37:29Leonard missing.
00:37:30You can see that Leonard's
00:37:31trying to build back up
00:37:32this conference show.
00:37:37Well, Hearns now knows
00:37:38that Leonard's going to try
00:37:40to land it overhand right.
00:37:41He's seen it.
00:37:43Final seconds of round four.
00:37:47A better fight to this point
00:37:49than many, many people expected.
00:37:57All right, all right.
00:37:59Now we see what we got, baby.
00:38:00Now, we want that right hand more.
00:38:02He can't, he has no,
00:38:03has no answer to the right hand.
00:38:04Do it off a jab.
00:38:06I'm going to see some jabs
00:38:06in the hard right hand on top.
00:38:08Squat when you do it.
00:38:09Jab, squat, throw it over top.
00:38:10Then, Ray, when you come back
00:38:12the next time,
00:38:13hurt that body.
00:38:13Start hurting that body.
00:38:14I got to get those legs
00:38:15away from him.
00:38:16Got it?
00:38:18You keep sliding side to side.
00:38:20Going back into round number four
00:38:23earlier in the round.
00:38:25That was that first amazing
00:38:26right hand that just got
00:38:28Leonard's respect.
00:38:29Yeah, but it was on the end
00:38:30of the punch.
00:38:31Right, but it makes Leonard
00:38:32think about it, though.
00:38:33Well, he knows that he's in
00:38:34there with a fight now.
00:38:36Gil, what about Correa's
00:38:37instructions to Ray Leonard?
00:38:39Well, you know, he's telling
00:38:40him a lot of things, Tim.
00:38:42Maybe a little too much.
00:38:44I want to think, you know,
00:38:45you want to back your eye up
00:38:46from moving behind the Japanese.
00:38:48He's a really,
00:38:49he's worried.
00:38:50He's worried.
00:38:52Marvin Hagler says he's worried
00:38:54and Leonard comes out
00:38:55with a charge.
00:38:56That means Correa,
00:38:57the training at Leonard's corner.
00:39:00Round number five
00:39:01scheduled for 12.
00:39:03And again, as long as
00:39:04Tommy can play out there,
00:39:05this is almost a duplicate
00:39:06in the first fight
00:39:07where Lynn is giving away
00:39:08all of the early rounds.
00:39:10Can't get inside.
00:39:10Can't go to work.
00:39:12And he didn't go to work
00:39:13until he landed the one
00:39:13big punch on Tommy
00:39:15in the sixth round.
00:39:16We have scored the first
00:39:17score on our cards.
00:39:19for Tommy Hearns
00:39:20until he walked down
00:39:21in the round three
00:39:21and a close dent.
00:39:23There's that scoring jab of Hearns.
00:39:26Paul Tom was a very,
00:39:27very close round.
00:39:28Lynn is looking for the big hook,
00:39:29though.
00:39:30And Tommy shoots the jab.
00:39:31And Tommy's dropping
00:39:32that much jab again.
00:39:33But he does it all the time,
00:39:35Bill.
00:39:35He's done it forever.
00:39:36I know you'd like to see him
00:39:37change it,
00:39:38but you know he won't.
00:39:39And he's got hit on the chin
00:39:40doing it.
00:39:40Yes, he has.
00:39:41Do you notice how slow
00:39:42Lynn's jab is coming up?
00:39:43You notice that Ray just
00:39:45can't seem to reach him.
00:39:46He tries to throw it right now.
00:39:47He's got to get closer.
00:39:48He's got to get closer.
00:39:49Now is when Lynn should
00:39:50go to work.
00:39:51Right now is when Lynn should
00:39:52go to work.
00:39:55Short right landed
00:39:56inside by Hearns.
00:40:04Again, this is
00:40:05Hearns territory
00:40:05where they are right now.
00:40:08Right hand by Hearns.
00:40:10Right hand.
00:40:16Hearns trying to tie him up
00:40:17and he does.
00:40:19Combination by Leonard.
00:40:21Look, Tommy Hearns,
00:40:22he's still wobbling.
00:40:24We're in the fifth.
00:40:26Another right hand
00:40:27on his chin.
00:40:30Tommy's fighting back.
00:40:31Overhand right.
00:40:33Hearns fires
00:40:34a right hand back,
00:40:35but he's reluctant
00:40:36to tie up Leonard.
00:40:37Leonard's using
00:40:38a lot of energy, Tim.
00:40:40Hearns just covering up.
00:40:42Right hand landed
00:40:43again by Leonard.
00:40:45Hearns covering up.
00:40:47Leonard trying to find
00:40:48an opening.
00:40:51Hearns fires back
00:40:52and misses.
00:40:53Now finally grabs
00:40:54onto Leonard.
00:40:55Tim Hearns is not
00:40:56out of it yet.
00:40:57No, he's not.
00:40:58Yes.
00:40:59Solid punches by Leonard.
00:41:00Leonard to the body.
00:41:02There he is.
00:41:02Right hand right down
00:41:03the pipe on another.
00:41:04Hearns in trouble.
00:41:06Hearns has got to fight back.
00:41:08He is fighting back.
00:41:09He's got to fight back.
00:41:10He's got to get him back.
00:41:11He's got to be
00:41:12throwing punches right now.
00:41:14Right now.
00:41:14Hearns.
00:41:15Hearns legs a little shaky.
00:41:17Scored a right hand inside.
00:41:18Leonard may have tired himself.
00:41:20Spending a lot of energy,
00:41:21Tim.
00:41:22Missed a lot of punches.
00:41:23Under 30 seconds left
00:41:24in round five.
00:41:25A swinging left on the break
00:41:27scored by Leonard.
00:41:29Nice.
00:41:29A left scored by Hearns.
00:41:32Short with a right hand
00:41:33as Leonard.
00:41:34Hearns is dropping back
00:41:35and dropping his hands.
00:41:37Hearns trying to load up
00:41:38on the right
00:41:38after taking all
00:41:39of that punishment.
00:41:40Final seconds round five.
00:41:44Jab by Leonard.
00:41:45Not much on it.
00:41:47Hearns appears arm weary
00:41:48and still unsteady.
00:41:50In the round five.
00:42:00This is what makes a great fighter.
00:42:03This is what's going to make you great.
00:42:05You understand?
00:42:06Here's that.
00:42:07Hold your head back.
00:42:09Hold your head back.
00:42:11Okay.
00:42:12This is what's going to make you great.
00:42:17There's that left hook
00:42:19of Ray Leonard.
00:42:19It's the same one
00:42:20that hurt him in the first fight.
00:42:22Kept waiting for him
00:42:23to throw that left hook
00:42:23and he nailed him with it.
00:42:24He got inside.
00:42:25Now he's close.
00:42:26He beat him to the post.
00:42:27When he's close,
00:42:28that's when he can do his damage.
00:42:29And once he hurts you,
00:42:30he's a great finisher.
00:42:31The right and left combination.
00:42:33There's the right.
00:42:35The left.
00:42:37Wobbling.
00:42:38Hearns refused to go down
00:42:39and landed in the rope.
00:42:40Leonard attacking him,
00:42:42but Hearns surviving.
00:42:44One more look at it.
00:42:46Emmanuel Stewart screamed at Hearns
00:42:48when he got back.
00:42:49This is what makes a great fighter.
00:42:50The way he rallied in the fifth
00:42:52and telling him, obviously,
00:42:53to accept this challenge.
00:42:54And he also said that Leonard
00:42:56is out of gas.
00:42:57Spending a lot of energy last round.
00:43:01Emmanuel Stewart in the pre-fight
00:43:03said if Leonard can't get him out of there
00:43:05with his big punches,
00:43:05he's going to be in trouble.
00:43:07Two good jabs by Hearns
00:43:09early here in the sixth.
00:43:12The questionable legs of Hearns
00:43:14will be tested now.
00:43:16Leonard's breathing is real hard
00:43:17in this round.
00:43:18Leonard looks tired right now, Tim.
00:43:19He's going to have to get a second win.
00:43:21And that's when Hearns
00:43:22will put the pressure on him right now.
00:43:24He gambled with him.
00:43:25He got to gamble.
00:43:26You're right, Marvin.
00:43:27That's what they're screaming
00:43:28at Tommy from the corner.
00:43:29Get off.
00:43:30By him waiting,
00:43:31he's giving him a minute time
00:43:32to figure out a good plan.
00:43:34Marvelous Marvin Hagel,
00:43:35Gilliam Clancy.
00:43:36There's a good left by Hearns.
00:43:38You can hear the impact.
00:43:40Right hand blocked by Leonard.
00:43:48Leonard's waiting for that jab now.
00:43:50He's giving Leonard time to think.
00:44:10He's throwing punches to get Tommy out of there.
00:44:14But I think if he doesn't get him out of there,
00:44:16I think he's going to wind up
00:44:17blowing a decision.
00:44:18Because he just is not busy enough
00:44:19looking for the one big punch.
00:44:23There's that head moving.
00:44:24That's when Tommy should go right to the body.
00:44:26Anytime Ray moves that head in front of you.
00:44:30Good jab by Hearns.
00:44:32Good one back from Leonard.
00:44:35Both finding the range here around six,
00:44:38but not pulling them in punches.
00:44:43Hearns.
00:44:4433-year-old Sugar Ray Leonard,
00:44:4630-year-old Thomas Hearns
00:44:47into the sixth round scheduled for 12.
00:44:50And knocked down by Hearns
00:44:52in the third.
00:44:53A big round in the fifth for Leonard
00:44:54who staggered him.
00:44:56Tommy Hearns.
00:44:57Leonard's looking for that one big punch against him.
00:45:00Now it's wide open.
00:45:03Give him a minute time to figure out a pin.
00:45:05And so Leonard's going to come up
00:45:06with a really good combination.
00:45:07Leonard just missed with a right hand.
00:45:11Now Hearns is stalking Leonard,
00:45:13but he's not moving his hands.
00:45:16He's getting a hook.
00:45:17Tommy should have thrown a hook.
00:45:19Leonard's dropping his hands now.
00:45:20Like, it ain't hurting him.
00:45:22Leonard ducked under a right hand from Hearns
00:45:24and takes a left on the next exchange.
00:45:31Watch the face.
00:45:33That's for Leonard.
00:45:35I know if I was in Tommy Hearns going,
00:45:37I have a faith in that you have
00:45:38and hook into the body.
00:45:39What's he doing?
00:45:40Why is he standing there without punching?
00:45:41That's when Leonard gets off.
00:45:43How big a puncher is Sugar Ray Leonard now, Marvin,
00:45:46based on your fight?
00:45:47Well, he couldn't punch me.
00:45:48He put me with the best shots.
00:45:49Didn't really hurt me or stung me at all.
00:45:51That's the end of round number six.
00:45:53I think it's because of the weight difference.
00:45:56Not a big action round
00:45:57in the sense that I had, gentlemen,
00:45:59that perhaps they both were kind of playing
00:46:01let's get a little rest here
00:46:02after a very vigorous fifth.
00:46:05Here's Emmanuel Stewart in the Hearns' corner.
00:46:27You got to let the shots go, though.
00:46:34When he caught you with the clean-up hook,
00:46:36he shot a one-two.
00:46:37Miss you did that, bam,
00:46:38and you didn't see the hook.
00:46:39You're letting him punch through there much.
00:46:41You're letting him punch so much.
00:46:42You got to go with that big way.
00:46:44Emmanuel Stewart wants more out of his fighter.
00:46:46Let your hands go.
00:46:47Punch more.
00:46:48Don't let Leonard punch so much.
00:46:50Well, I felt that way last round, Tim.
00:46:53Tommy was stalking him, stalking,
00:46:54but he wasn't moving his hands.
00:46:56He said,
00:46:57We came to fight this guy.
00:46:58Let's fight him.
00:46:58Round seven.
00:46:59And a short right landed by Hearns.
00:47:01First exchange.
00:47:02What I noticed is when he starts flirting,
00:47:04he starts throwing punches.
00:47:05Hearns is standing there and cover up.
00:47:08Hearns picking up the pace.
00:47:09Bangs to the body.
00:47:15Leonard trying to block punches,
00:47:17but not punching back.
00:47:19Hearns driving him along the ropes.
00:47:20A combination.
00:47:22May have him in some trouble.
00:47:24Hard to tell right now.
00:47:25But he's missing a lot of punches, Tim.
00:47:26Yes, he is.
00:47:26And in this heat,
00:47:27after one guy gets finished punching,
00:47:29then the other guy will come back.
00:47:30He's taking a lot,
00:47:31it takes a lot out of you
00:47:32when you miss this guy with punches.
00:47:34He's got to jump on him again.
00:47:38Crowd came to his feet,
00:47:39but he did not score heavily.
00:47:42We're in the seventh,
00:47:43scheduled for 12.
00:47:44A dramatic count.
00:47:45Tommy has Ray out where he wants it.
00:47:50Sharp left from Ray to the body,
00:47:52a little bit low.
00:47:53That's where he wants to hit Tommy in the body.
00:47:56Tommy's got the left hook right here.
00:47:58There it is.
00:47:59He's going to do it again.
00:47:59Do it again.
00:48:00This is where Tommy sits there,
00:48:01and that's how Ray gets on.
00:48:04Can't sit there.
00:48:08Left from the right from Leonard.
00:48:13Short with a right right hand
00:48:15back from Hearnsland.
00:48:16Shows that it looks like Leonard's
00:48:17a little weak right now, Tim.
00:48:19Got moved by that right hand.
00:48:20It wasn't that hard of punch.
00:48:2390-degree temperatures
00:48:24here at Caesars Palace
00:48:25on a June night.
00:48:27More than 15,000.
00:48:28They've been up and down
00:48:29out of their seats for the action.
00:48:30I think the key to this punch
00:48:31for Hearns is that left hook.
00:48:33You should use the left hook a lot more.
00:48:35Through the body.
00:48:35The body to the head.
00:48:38That'll set up the other punches.
00:48:40Body and head
00:48:40to the right straight right hand.
00:48:43Don't play with him.
00:48:44Don't play with him.
00:48:45Tommy's not getting off enough right now.
00:48:47Can't play with him.
00:48:48He's flopping that hand down.
00:48:49Tommy is not using those hands enough.
00:48:52Using those hands around,
00:48:53not using them out.
00:48:54Look at Leonard's able to get
00:48:55the full range final.
00:48:56He's got his head up.
00:48:59That's what I said to Tommy goes.
00:49:00He folds in, tucks under,
00:49:02he stops punching.
00:49:03But Hearns missed two punches there
00:49:04that should have been target practice for him.
00:49:06Now he goes to the body and connects.
00:49:09Vicious body punches.
00:49:10Silver Ray.
00:49:12Hearns jabbing back.
00:49:14But the body flows.
00:49:16Leonard now pushed Hearns away.
00:49:19Under 30 seconds to go around seven.
00:49:26Tommy looks tired.
00:49:29Ray looked tired at the start of the round.
00:49:32But this is who's got the best to do
00:49:33if he's going to win this fight.
00:49:36I don't think it's going to be
00:49:37to tell you the puncher for him.
00:49:42Well, he did a lot of feigning.
00:49:43Neither guy able to land
00:49:45wound up with Ray standing behind Hearns.
00:49:48He was just self-coaching.
00:49:50And in round number seven,
00:49:51difficult round to score.
00:49:53Remember early on
00:49:54that Hearns knocked Leonard
00:49:55all along the ropes
00:49:56with Ray not punching back.
00:49:58And then Leonard came back well.
00:50:00Oh, Eddie.
00:50:00Check him out here.
00:50:01If the judges remember
00:50:02the beginning of the round,
00:50:03they'd give it to Hearns.
00:50:04Ray Charles, baby.
00:50:05Look, you'll move standing up too tall.
00:50:08Remember, how did you fake?
00:50:09Now listen.
00:50:10You've got to get your body.
00:50:13You've got to get your legs first.
00:50:15Go in.
00:50:15Steal what you want
00:50:16and move him around a little bit.
00:50:18Steal what you want
00:50:18and move around.
00:50:20Here's the early part of the round
00:50:22where Hearns
00:50:23was knocking Leonard
00:50:24all along the ropes
00:50:25and Ray didn't really take
00:50:27any damaging blows,
00:50:28but he didn't punch back at all.
00:50:29So Hearns certainly got scoring points there.
00:50:32And there was the best punch.
00:50:33Was that right?
00:50:34You saw right there.
00:50:35Exactly.
00:50:35But Hearns got a nice left hook
00:50:36and I don't know why he used it more.
00:50:39But you won't punch.
00:50:40You got to punch.
00:50:42Physical fighters.
00:50:43Forget the boxing.
00:50:44Fight the man.
00:50:45Oh, God.
00:50:47Now Emmanuel Stewart says
00:50:49fight the man.
00:50:50Physical boxing.
00:50:51We're into round number eight.
00:50:55Hearns and goal.
00:50:56Leonard in the stripes.
00:51:04If Leonard can stop reaching
00:51:05with that nut jack,
00:51:07he's going to be in a little trouble.
00:51:08He has to keep that jab going
00:51:10to keep Ray out where he wants it.
00:51:12I'm looking at Ray's left eye right now, too.
00:51:15One of them just started looking a little smaller
00:51:16than the other one.
00:51:17Maybe coming hit him in the eye right there.
00:51:22There's that pistol jab.
00:51:24Not quite the same stinger speed
00:51:25it used to have,
00:51:26but it can still hurt you.
00:51:29And more importantly,
00:51:30it scores points right now, Tom.
00:51:37Well, the oddmakers start to fight
00:51:39probably wouldn't go past eight rounds
00:51:42or into the eighth.
00:51:43The so-called over and under
00:51:44in Las Vegas betting circles
00:51:46or in the eighth round.
00:51:48Tommy can't hang on the ropes at all.
00:51:50He's got to stay in the center of the rim.
00:51:52And he's not using his hands enough right now.
00:51:55He's not even using that left hook
00:51:56and Tommy loves the left hook
00:51:57because he's got to be with the rope hook.
00:52:00He's boxing.
00:52:01You heard Stewart say
00:52:02at the end of the round,
00:52:02go out and fight him.
00:52:09And he's trying to take his confidence away from him.
00:52:16And he's since he's been able to do that,
00:52:17I don't think he's taking his shots.
00:52:20Double hook.
00:52:20Double hook to the body,
00:52:21the hook to the head,
00:52:22come back with the straight right hand.
00:52:24Ray is going to have to explode
00:52:26and explode soon.
00:52:28We're saying that Tommy's not punching much.
00:52:30Ray isn't exactly a ball of fire in there.
00:52:35This is where you give Ray that time.
00:52:37Right hand landed.
00:52:38Not full impact,
00:52:39but it did land.
00:52:41That's me.
00:52:42My problem.
00:52:43More those for Tommy.
00:52:44When Tommy is fighting offensively,
00:52:47he seems to have it all his own way.
00:52:48I don't know why he waits so long.
00:52:50I think that's what Manny Stewart's talking about.
00:52:53It seems every time he starts to unload,
00:52:55he gets the festival.
00:52:57Under a minute to go in round number eight.
00:53:01Hearns forcing the attack.
00:53:03That's what he's got to do,
00:53:04keep Linus back against the rope.
00:53:07We have waiting a little too long to get off.
00:53:11We have Tommy Hearns ahead,
00:53:12having given him four rounds cleanly.
00:53:16We wait for Tommy to pick up.
00:53:20Tommy's got to come right back.
00:53:23Ray looks like he's about ready to do something.
00:53:26He just can't get past that left hand at Tommy's.
00:53:29Look how weak he's got to go away.
00:53:32Hearns pushed him.
00:53:33What appeared to be a staggering crunch
00:53:35was really from a push.
00:53:37It was a push,
00:53:38but Ray's legs are holding.
00:53:39Let it go!
00:53:41Final seconds of round eight.
00:53:42And they're asking Tommy,
00:53:44pleading with him to get off.
00:53:45Let him go.
00:53:46Let the punches go.
00:53:47What are you doing?
00:53:48Who is dead?
00:53:49You don't have to do it right now.
00:53:50I don't believe that.
00:53:51Most of these guys are wide open
00:53:53and need the guy punched.
00:53:54Exactly.
00:53:55You know it.
00:53:55You know Ray.
00:53:56After the bell.
00:53:59In the Ray Leonard corner.
00:54:00That is the same thing
00:54:01that happened in the first fight.
00:54:03He's standing too straight up.
00:54:03He's standing too tall, man.
00:54:04Hey, when you go to the shoulder right hand,
00:54:07do it off a jab to the belly.
00:54:08Then you can throw it all the time now.
00:54:10I want to see who I can do it now.
00:54:11I need some body work, man.
00:54:13He's too straight up.
00:54:14Come down a little bit, okay?
00:54:16It's got to check from both sides of that body.
00:54:21You all right?
00:54:25Okay, now you've got to do it throw punches.
00:54:28Now, I know.
00:54:29Well, so far, Gillespie card,
00:54:30Ray Leonard gets round five big
00:54:32when he wobbled Hearns.
00:54:33We gave him round six in a close one.
00:54:36And everything else we've given to Tommy Hearns.
00:54:39Although he scored four and seven closely.
00:54:41And, of course, Hearns has a knockdown in round three.
00:54:44Right.
00:54:44I think Ray Leonard has a big mountain to climb right now, Tim.
00:54:48That's the way it looks on our card.
00:54:50Into round nine.
00:54:57And he's got to start now very slow.
00:55:00At the end of that last round, Marv,
00:55:01they both stood there looking at each other.
00:55:03Both guys had their hands down.
00:55:04Neither guy threw a punch.
00:55:05You see a little hit the right of the chest.
00:55:07You see that jab is bothering Ray all the time.
00:55:11You know, Tommy's the one that hurt his eye
00:55:12in the first beginning.
00:55:15In the first fight.
00:55:16Right.
00:55:16You wonder whether or not he's still thinking the same thing.
00:55:19There was that left hook of Tommy Hearns.
00:55:20A little low, but that's what he has to do.
00:55:23Ray is throwing range finders out there now.
00:55:25Not so much on him.
00:55:27Leonard's waiting to see what's going to happen,
00:55:29how tired he can make Tommy.
00:55:30Well, he's looking to land that one big punch,
00:55:32and he's been looking from the opening battle.
00:55:34Low blow from Leonard
00:55:36and gets a warning from Richard Steele.
00:55:38We know about the low blows.
00:55:40You had a few of those, did you, Marvin?
00:55:43Or did you throw a few?
00:55:44Or both?
00:55:45Well, you know what happened.
00:55:47Right now, Sugar Ray Leonard looks like a puzzle fighter.
00:55:50He's standing straight up, which his corner told him not to do.
00:55:53And he's always out of the range
00:55:55when he's throwing those bombs he's trying to throw.
00:55:58He's trying to show Tommy that he's got bigger,
00:56:00I think, that he can...
00:56:02Right-hand counter landed by Hearns.
00:56:05Leonard landed in right-hand, so it's him.
00:56:06Yeah, that was coming in.
00:56:08He scored first.
00:56:09But Hearns had a little more impact.
00:56:12Hearns just landed there.
00:56:13Good left hook for the body.
00:56:14That's just what he should do more of.
00:56:16He'd come back to the head with the hook.
00:56:19Short for that right.
00:56:20Tommy set it up beautifully that time.
00:56:22I think that punch there just hurt Tommy right to the rib.
00:56:26I see the clinking.
00:56:26See him?
00:56:27Right here, he's clinking.
00:56:29He's spitting blood.
00:56:32That's what Leonard's doing.
00:56:33He's attacking the body now.
00:56:34See, Ray is looking for that one big punch, though, Mark.
00:56:37And sometimes you can wait in the fight.
00:56:38There it is again.
00:56:39He's just out of range.
00:56:41He'll be waiting in the fight's over.
00:56:42He said, well, he never found it.
00:56:44He's got to be busy.
00:56:46Punch will come by itself.
00:56:48He has to stop putting it together.
00:56:49And who's Tommy stop punching for?
00:56:51Why does he stop punching?
00:56:52And he's letting Ray back him up.
00:56:55And he knows Tommy gets in trouble when he backs up.
00:56:58There you go.
00:56:58That's what I'm looking for.
00:57:00And now coming back with a straight right hand.
00:57:07Short right scored by Leonard.
00:57:09And the left and the right.
00:57:11Burns fires back, but Leonard had the better of it.
00:57:14He's got to fire back.
00:57:16And this is what Ray has to do.
00:57:18Come on, Tommy.
00:57:19He can't fight from outside.
00:57:21Big right hand.
00:57:22Big right hand.
00:57:31Tommy dropped his right hand.
00:57:33And that was his downfall.
00:57:37Leonard trying to spring to the advantage of that left hand.
00:57:40Tommy's tired.
00:57:41Final seconds of round nine.
00:57:43And Tommy doesn't have a leg under him right now.
00:57:45One good solid punch.
00:57:47He's gone down.
00:57:51Leonard checked him out.
00:57:52Going back to the corner.
00:57:55You've got to listen to me real good.
00:57:56This is going to be the last round of the fight, Tommy.
00:57:58You've got to come out and let your big shots go.
00:58:00You know, you cannot afford to make this fight go longer.
00:58:04Now, you know what I'm saying?
00:58:05You've got to listen to me.
00:58:06Very clever.
00:58:07You've got to come out and let your shots go.
00:58:09Try to get this man out of here this way, okay?
00:58:17There's the left hook that staggered.
00:58:19Tommy Hearns blocked the next two,
00:58:22but he was still wobbly, and there came the right.
00:58:28Leonard working inside,
00:58:30then brought up that left.
00:58:34Watch for the right hand.
00:58:36Well, he's got a little right hand after Hearns covered up.
00:58:39So we're into round ten.
00:58:41There's Roberto Duran working the Spanish telecast,
00:58:44Spanish-speaking telecast tonight.
00:58:46The WBC middleweight champion
00:58:48with a remarkable winner, Ryan Barkley,
00:58:50talked about as the next opponent for the winner here.
00:58:53All right, Ray feels that he heard him
00:58:54in the last round, Tim.
00:58:55He's right on him.
00:58:56And this is where Tommy doesn't belong.
00:58:58On the rope, allowing Leonard to get with him,
00:59:00punching rain, which is what he's doing.
00:59:03And he's not punching.
00:59:04Right there.
00:59:05Leonard's right in front of him,
00:59:06and he's not getting off.
00:59:07Now Leonard has the distance.
00:59:09Burns is letting him have the distance.
00:59:13Leonard's jab starting to take effect.
00:59:15Well, because he's getting a little closer.
00:59:16Tommy's not pumping that jab anymore.
00:59:19And the Hearns legs don't look so good.
00:59:21The left of the neck from Leonard.
00:59:23You heard Emmanuel Stewart saying to Hearns,
00:59:26you've got to fight.
00:59:27You've got to go get him.
00:59:29Leonard started it to put his punches together.
00:59:31That's what he has to do.
00:59:33Get close enough.
00:59:33Just keep those hands moving.
00:59:35The big punch comes all by itself.
00:59:39Tommy looks sloppy every time he backs up.
00:59:41The legs aren't there anymore, Rob.
00:59:43Any matter of fact that he had to make that 163.5 pounds,
00:59:46maybe not.
00:59:47But the legs aren't there.
00:59:48I don't know why he's not firing that right hand a lot more.
00:59:52Even if he's missing it, he'll keep it right back a little bit.
00:59:57See, this one, Tommy looks good when he's coming forward.
01:00:00And when he's sticking that left hand.
01:00:01Keeping that left, uh...
01:00:02Keeping Ray away from him.
01:00:04He has to move and keep him away.
01:00:08Now number 10 scheduled for 12.
01:00:19He's letting him go, he's letting him have his way in there.
01:00:26What you waiting?
01:00:29I don't know what he's waiting for.
01:00:31If he's not doing anything else,
01:00:32he should be pumping that jab.
01:00:33Exactly.
01:00:34He's going to try to come over the top with the right hand now.
01:00:36Not doing anything else.
01:00:37Double the jab.
01:00:38Pump the jab.
01:00:39Hearns has got to wake up now.
01:00:42He's got to get that second win and start waking up
01:00:44and letting Ray know that he's not tired.
01:00:47Ray missed with a right.
01:00:48A short chopper backhanded by Hearns.
01:00:50Under a minute.
01:00:51A little blood coming from either the mouth or nose of Hearns.
01:00:54This is on the cheek of Hearns.
01:00:58Now a right miss.
01:00:59A little cut under the left eye of Thomas Hearns.
01:01:02That's the blood.
01:01:04Insignificant, insignificant, no damage there, no serious problem.
01:01:07Good.
01:01:07Solid left.
01:01:09And Thomas Hearns.
01:01:10He's trying to get that little energy to snap that.
01:01:12And that's what he's got to do.
01:01:14He's got to show him he's got to snap that.
01:01:15When he has Ray punching from outside the way he is now, he's in command.
01:01:18It's only when he slows down and allows Ray to get inside.
01:01:21Well, you know, Ray knows how to go the distance.
01:01:24And I think that's just going to be the advantage in this fight right now.
01:01:28Early part of the round, you'd have to score for Leonard,
01:01:31but Hearns coming back here now in the later seconds.
01:01:34Down to 15 in round 10.
01:01:37There you go.
01:01:38Short right inside by Hearns.
01:01:40Counter back to the body.
01:01:41Hearns misses with a right.
01:01:42Hearns has got to go forward.
01:01:44Lands the left.
01:01:45Final seconds of the pitch as Leonard scores.
01:01:59All you've got to do is throw him, baby.
01:02:02They're begging you to throw him right here.
01:02:04Get the damn camera out of there.
01:02:07Throw the right hand, Thomas.
01:02:09That's going to take you home.
01:02:11This is 11th round coming up.
01:02:1311th round, you don't want to fight, let it go.
01:02:15Thomas, listen to me.
01:02:17Jab right hand, left hook.
01:02:18I want that right hand straight to the forehead.
01:02:20Come back with the left hook.
01:02:22You can knock him out with a jab, straight hand, left hook,
01:02:24but the straight right hand has to hit him in the forehead.
01:02:26Come back with the right hand.
01:02:27They're gone, but I want to...
01:02:28Stay in there a little bit.
01:02:29Okay?
01:02:29All right, Jake.
01:02:30All right, all right.
01:02:31All right.
01:02:33All right.
01:02:34Let's go now.
01:02:35All right.
01:02:36We've got six minutes.
01:02:37Let's do it.
01:02:40Round 11 upcoming.
01:02:42We have given Ray Leonard two cleanly, two close ones.
01:02:45It could be scored either way.
01:02:47The rest of it to Hearns,
01:02:48and Leonard comes charging across.
01:02:50Richard Steele cut him off.
01:02:53He's not out of his corner.
01:02:54Let's see if Tommy allows Ray to get with him punching range.
01:02:58It's almost like allowing him.
01:02:59He doesn't have to allow.
01:03:01He can pump that jab.
01:03:02Look at the low blow.
01:03:04He should start taking a play for Ray when Ray is like that.
01:03:07There's that overhead right.
01:03:08Trying to land a haymaker and miss it again.
01:03:10Well, as long as he can get away with it.
01:03:12He's going to throw it four times and miss and land the fifth.
01:03:15It's okay.
01:03:16Tommy's not counting back.
01:03:18Tommy's got to stay in the middle of the ring.
01:03:21Short uppercut with a good left back from Leonard.
01:03:25Tommy seems to be waking up right now, right then.
01:03:27Tim Landers, Marvin Haggard, Bill Clancy in round 11 of the scheduled 12-round championship
01:03:32out.
01:03:33Hearns, Leonard 2.
01:03:34There's a right by Hearns.
01:03:36Big right hand by Tommy Hayes.
01:03:38Another, another, another look.
01:03:41Down goes Hearns with a combination from Hearns.
01:03:47Leonard looks hurt.
01:03:48Gets up, but he is hurting.
01:03:49Come on, get back.
01:03:51Tim, I think that his eyes are clear.
01:03:53He made your head a little bit, but his eyes are clear.
01:03:55Hearns is in.
01:03:56Hearns after on the left of the body.
01:03:59Leonard firing back.
01:04:01Down twice in this fight.
01:04:07A short right by Leonard.
01:04:10Well, believe me, Leonard's in this fight.
01:04:12A short right by Hearns.
01:04:14Cyrus Hearns, I'd still use that left jab.
01:04:16Keep pumping that jab.
01:04:18The other punches have come.
01:04:19Hearns has got to make sure Leonard don't get that wrist.
01:04:23You've got to use it.
01:04:24There you go.
01:04:24Hearns counters with a right.
01:04:26Leonard tied him up.
01:04:29Boy, both of these guys are showing all the championship heart in the world, though.
01:04:34More than anybody expected tonight.
01:04:37The kind of action they've been able to generate.
01:04:39Their hearts were never in doubt.
01:04:41But the ability they've shown here,
01:04:44a struggle into the 11th round, firing bombs,
01:04:47has really been remarkable.
01:04:48I don't think Tommy needs that right-hand business anymore.
01:04:50I think all he needs to go now is pump his jab and post home.
01:04:54Well, he's got two knockdowns on the scorecard, too.
01:04:57We've got him ahead handling.
01:04:59And look at Ray bang him back.
01:05:00Ray bangs him back a good left hook.
01:05:03Big mistake to count Ray Leonard out of this fight.
01:05:07You're not counting him out.
01:05:09Well, you're pointing out the score.
01:05:12The way he's going is, he can't possibly.
01:05:14He's got it.
01:05:14He's doing what time he should be doing.
01:05:16Under 30 seconds to go.
01:05:18In the 11th round, this is a 12-round fight.
01:05:23There's a right-hand by Leonard.
01:05:25Right-hand shot from Leonard.
01:05:27And bangs inside.
01:05:29Tommy lets him go, lets him have it.
01:05:34And Tommy's a little tired.
01:05:37Tommy should be backing up.
01:05:39Right-hand by Burns.
01:05:41Raised the chin of Leonard, but he punched right back.
01:05:46In the round, number 11.
01:06:03Let's see that knockdown.
01:06:05A right that hurt him.
01:06:07A little delay.
01:06:08Missed for the left.
01:06:09I believe it was the left hook.
01:06:11There's another right-hand and a left hook.
01:06:13He's looking right behind that.
01:06:15And three punches.
01:06:16Cumulative effect, sending Leonard down.
01:06:19All right, take another look at it.
01:06:20There's the first right-hand.
01:06:21That wobbled him.
01:06:22Missed the other one.
01:06:23Missed the hook to the body.
01:06:26And then there's another good right-hand-left hook.
01:06:29And the final right-hand.
01:06:30And down he goes.
01:06:35Gentlemen, it's safe to say,
01:06:37the way we have it,
01:06:39should a Ray Leonard need to knock out
01:06:41in this final round to win the fight.
01:06:43Absolutely.
01:06:43He's been down twice in the fight.
01:06:45It's the point, sister.
01:06:46If I was in Tommy Hearns going,
01:06:48I'd say pump that chair, pump that chair.
01:06:50Don't let this guy close to you.
01:06:52Don't let Leonard be too nice to you in here right now.
01:06:54And you don't have to take any chances.
01:06:56No, when he tried it, Marvin, he smiled at him.
01:06:58He smiled, I said, come on, we're friends.
01:06:59He smiled at him.
01:07:00All right.
01:07:01All right, what?
01:07:05Hearns after him.
01:07:07Keep talking to Ray Leonard.
01:07:09Hearns busy here early in round 12.
01:07:12That's something he doesn't have to do.
01:07:15Well, he is a gallant guy trying to put him away.
01:07:17Look at Hearns whale away.
01:07:19He scored two knockdowns already.
01:07:21May not have to do it,
01:07:23but there's so much fight at stake.
01:07:24Both of these guys gritting, gritting their teeth,
01:07:28giving it their all.
01:07:29Tommy Hearns wants this so badly.
01:07:33Sugar Ray Leonard, of course,
01:07:35one of the proudest champions ever,
01:07:36will not concede anything.
01:07:40If you notice, the way Hearns...
01:07:42Right hand by Leonard.
01:07:44Both guys landed right hand, Tim.
01:07:47Hearns is waiting to get back.
01:07:48Cover right hand, backing Leonard.
01:07:50Hearns is in the rope.
01:07:51Ray Leonard.
01:07:52Gotta fight him back.
01:07:53And here's what Tommy didn't know how to do
01:07:54in the first place.
01:07:55Hold on and walk him out of there.
01:08:00Leonard's trying to push him to the rope
01:08:01so he can bang him.
01:08:03Jeffrey goes to break him.
01:08:04Leonard did not break that time.
01:08:05He's slick.
01:08:06Mark, you know that.
01:08:07Oh, yeah.
01:08:08That's what I'm saying.
01:08:08Here he goes.
01:08:09Come on, Tom.
01:08:10Leonard rallying.
01:08:11Backs up Hearns again,
01:08:12but Hearns fires back.
01:08:13Like you said,
01:08:14Tommy's getting the last minute.
01:08:15Tommy's right on the ropes now
01:08:16where he shouldn't be.
01:08:18Left hook landed by Leonard.
01:08:19And Tommy has nothing left.
01:08:23Leonard in desperation now.
01:08:25He's got to put his hand away.
01:08:26Watch the clock now, Tim.
01:08:27Tommy has nothing left.
01:08:28Right hand by Leonard
01:08:30and Hearns in difficulty.
01:08:31Along the ropes,
01:08:32another combination.
01:08:33Punching back when he's wide open.
01:08:36Leonard's firing away.
01:08:38Can we see a replay of 1981?
01:08:40But here's Tommy Hearns holding on.
01:08:42Look at that clock going around.
01:08:43That's what he couldn't do
01:08:44in the first fight.
01:08:46Exactly.
01:08:46Under a minute to go.
01:08:48Wild right hand by Leonard.
01:08:49Landed on the back of Hearns.
01:08:51Hearns wobbly-legged
01:08:53but holding on
01:08:54as you point out
01:08:54something he's...
01:08:55And Leonard trying to walk in.
01:08:57That's what Tommy gets in trouble.
01:08:59That's what he's doing better.
01:09:00He knows enough to hold, though, Marvin,
01:09:02which he did not know
01:09:03how to do before.
01:09:04He's backing up on that rope again
01:09:05and that's where Leonard watches
01:09:06so he can feel it.
01:09:08And punch back.
01:09:10Leonard giving in everything.
01:09:12And Hearns trying to punch down.
01:09:14Not much thing in his punches.
01:09:16Staggering around the ring.
01:09:17Under 30 seconds we go.
01:09:19That was the big left hook on Leonard.
01:09:21See, Leonard moves the last 30 seconds.
01:09:23Leonard to the body
01:09:24and now up to the head.
01:09:25Hearns punching back
01:09:26with no effect.
01:09:28Well, Leonard's a little tired now.
01:09:29Yes, he is.
01:09:31This should be a point
01:09:32to get away right there.
01:09:33Leonard punching on the breaker.
01:09:34Right hand lead scored.
01:09:35There can no longer be enough time.
01:09:37In the fight, there cannot be enough.
01:09:38Final seconds.
01:09:39Final seconds
01:09:40with Hearns still on his feet.
01:09:44The crowd is on its feet.
01:09:45What a war!
01:09:48What a fight!
01:09:51Very good fight.
01:09:57I believe Tommy Warren.
01:10:00Well, on our score,
01:10:01we can't change our mind, Marv.
01:10:03We said before the last round
01:10:05that Ray Leonard needed
01:10:06a knockout to win.
01:10:07He didn't get it.
01:10:08He batted Tommy all over the place.
01:10:10Did not get the knockout.
01:10:11Hearns scored two knockouts
01:10:12in the fight.
01:10:13They're on the point system.
01:10:14Two knockdowns in the fight.
01:10:16They're on the point system.
01:10:17I'd have to score it for Tommy Hearns.
01:10:18I would agree.
01:10:20We've got Hearns the winner.
01:10:22But we'll see how the officials see it.
01:10:24The judges here tonight
01:10:26are Tommy Kazmarek from New Jersey,
01:10:28Dalby Shirley, Jerry Roth from Las Vegas.
01:10:37A tremendous battle
01:10:39no matter which way the judges see it.
01:10:41We certainly have Hearns the winner.
01:10:43He scored knockdowns in round three,
01:10:45around 11.
01:10:46Ray Leonard's biggest round,
01:10:47the fifth, and then in the twelfth,
01:10:49a tremendous rally
01:10:50against the tired Tommy Hearns.
01:10:55Marvin, you know,
01:10:56I owe Tommy Hearns an apology.
01:10:58After the kitchen fight,
01:11:00I said on the air,
01:11:00Tommy, what do you need it for anymore?
01:11:02You should retire.
01:11:03You have all the money you want.
01:11:04You were down.
01:11:05You were hurt badly.
01:11:06Retire, Tommy.
01:11:07And did he show me?
01:11:08I said he didn't have any legs anymore.
01:11:10Didn't have a good chin,
01:11:11but he sure proved it tonight.
01:11:13He did.
01:11:14He fought an excellent fight,
01:11:15I thought, you know.
01:11:16Like, again, two champions.
01:11:18Leonard landed 232 punches,
01:11:20Tommy, 221.
01:11:22Hearns was more accurate with 40%,
01:11:23but Hearns scored those two big knockdowns,
01:11:26and that should be the difference in the fight.
01:11:28Exactly.
01:11:28See, I'm trying to tell you
01:11:29that Leonard's not moving as much.
01:11:31He put that little bulk on him,
01:11:32and that's going to be a bad thing for him.
01:11:35See, another thing, Mark,
01:11:36Leonard's strategy all during his training
01:11:38was to throw every punch like a bomb
01:11:40and hurt the other guy,
01:11:41and he forgot to put his punches together.
01:11:43That's what got him here.
01:11:44The big punch comes all by itself.
01:11:51I told Bob Barrow,
01:11:53maybe 20 million to do it for me.
01:11:57Let's go up to Michael Buffer.
01:11:58Jerry Roth scores the bout,
01:12:00113-112 for Thomas Hearns.
01:12:07Tommy Kazmarek scores it,
01:12:09113-112 for Sugar Ray Leonard.
01:12:15And Dolby Shirley scores the bout.
01:12:20112-112.
01:12:21This bout is a draw, ladies and gentlemen.
01:12:26The bout is a draw.
01:12:28The bout is a draw.
01:12:30Let's get both boxers here.
01:12:33Tommy Hearns.
01:12:35Everybody calm down, guys.
01:12:39Let's get Tommy Hearns over here.
01:12:40Tommy.
01:12:44Tommy Hearns.
01:12:46Manuel Stewart.
01:12:48Ray Leonard.
01:12:50Gentlemen, gentlemen,
01:12:52I've got to tell you guys both
01:12:53that Marvin Hagler, Gil Planky,
01:12:56and I had this fight scored for Tommy Hearns,
01:12:58primarily on the basis of the two knockdowns.
01:13:01Let's get Tommy's reaction
01:13:02to the decision first, a draw.
01:13:04Tommy, what are your thoughts?
01:13:06Well, I thought I won earlier rounds.
01:13:10But Ray was able to come back.
01:13:12I can't say nothing negative about Ray.
01:13:15It's a great fight.
01:13:16I've got to give him a spot.
01:13:17But would you expect with two knockdowns
01:13:19to get only a draw?
01:13:20Well, I was hoping for a winner.
01:13:24But you know how that is.
01:13:26Well, the crowd is registering their unhappiness.
01:13:28Ray Leonard,
01:13:30I've got to put it to you this way.
01:13:31Do you feel lucky to get a draw?
01:13:33No, I don't.
01:13:33It was a close fight.
01:13:34I thought the fact that those two knockdowns work
01:13:38was an edge.
01:13:40But I was able to come back
01:13:40with middle rounds and late rounds.
01:13:43So again, those knockdowns like 10-8 rounds.
01:13:45After I came back strong enough,
01:13:47the times I did rock, Tommy,
01:13:49that...
01:13:50To get to a point round.
01:13:51Yeah, exactly.
01:13:51Did you expect this kind of a fight?
01:13:54Well, I always expect a tough fight.
01:13:56So no matter what you guys be saying.
01:13:57Twelve rounds?
01:13:58Everyone said that Tommy was a shot fighter.
01:14:02And the fact of the matter was,
01:14:03he showed what he's made of.
01:14:04Well, you said he was a shot fighter, too.
01:14:06He won't win it, too.
01:14:08Come here, Tommy.
01:14:09Tommy, you don't seem terribly disappointed
01:14:11by this draw.
01:14:12This was something you wanted so badly.
01:14:16I feel grateful for it
01:14:17because I worked hard for it.
01:14:19I thought I wanted to fight,
01:14:21but, you know,
01:14:22that's up to the judges.
01:14:24And I can't fight with the judges.
01:14:27I'm proud to have a draw
01:14:29instead of a loss of a record.
01:14:31You are a gallant warrior.
01:14:33You both are.
01:14:33You both gave everything.
01:14:35You gave more than anybody expected
01:14:37you could possibly produce
01:14:38in this fight.
01:14:39I congratulate you both.
01:14:40No matter what the decision is,
01:14:42as I said, we saw it for Tommy Hearns.
01:14:44But nonetheless, a great, great battle.
01:14:46How about a rematch?
01:14:47I'm going home this time.
01:14:48I'm feeling and thinking about you
01:14:50all the time, but I can think about
01:14:52a woman sometime now.
01:14:54The rematch, Ray,
01:14:55have you had enough of this guy or not?
01:14:56Well, I think we'd both exhaust it.
01:14:58Are you talking rematch, Tommy?
01:15:00If you want, yes.
01:15:01Let's go home and rest for a while.
01:15:03I think we should go home
01:15:04and think about it
01:15:04and then come back and make a decision.
01:15:06But right now,
01:15:07we're too tired to say what we want to do.
01:15:10That's fair enough.
01:15:11I don't know about hell.
01:15:12That's fair enough.
01:15:13You've been through
01:15:13a tremendous emotional burden, Tommy.
01:15:15You showed you dealt with it
01:15:16fantastically tonight.
01:15:17Congratulations to you again, Ray.
01:15:19A fantastic comeback.
01:15:21You got yourself a draw.
01:15:22And there you have them,
01:15:24two great champions
01:15:25who have put on an unbelievable show
01:15:28here at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
01:15:31Tommy Hearns
01:15:32and Sugar Ray Leonard
01:15:34going the distance of 12
01:15:36for a draw.
01:15:42Now, let's return to you
01:15:44from the chaos in ringside
01:15:46to Jim Hill and Al Bernstein.
01:15:51Okay, Tim.
01:15:52Thank you very much.
01:15:53Absolutely incredible.
01:15:55I don't think anyone
01:15:56that watched the fight
01:15:57or thought about it beforehand
01:15:59Al thought
01:15:59that it would go the distance.
01:16:01And I know you yourself,
01:16:02you thought that Tommy won it.
01:16:03Yes, of all the scenarios,
01:16:05though, a draw was the least.
01:16:06The body and the head
01:16:07a lot more.
01:16:07It was there for him.
01:16:08It's a punch he has used
01:16:09against every other opponent
01:16:11but never against Sugar Ray Leonard.
01:16:12And it cost him dearly tonight.
01:16:14Why hasn't he ever used it?
01:16:15Why wouldn't he use it
01:16:16as often as he should?
01:16:17I don't know.
01:16:18And he saw it could work
01:16:19in that fight.
01:16:21In the middle rounds
01:16:21where he hurt Ray,
01:16:22remember,
01:16:22where he hurt him
01:16:22with that left hook.
01:16:23I think that really,
01:16:24really hurt him.
01:16:25Ray Leonard,
01:16:26as he was against Alon,
01:16:29wasn't throwing as many punches
01:16:30as we've seen
01:16:30the Ray Leonard
01:16:31in the past throw,
01:16:32which is why I think
01:16:33most of us thought
01:16:33Tommy might have had
01:16:35a decision victory.
01:16:36Clearly,
01:16:37both fighters were slower
01:16:38than they have been
01:16:39in the past,
01:16:39but both men were able
01:16:41to hit the other
01:16:41creating a really exciting fight.
01:16:43And both men have
01:16:44terrific firepower.
01:16:45Let no one say anything
01:16:46about the chin
01:16:47of Tommy Hearns anymore.
01:16:48I was just getting ready
01:16:49to add to that.
01:16:50You know,
01:16:50going into the fight,
01:16:51everyone had said
01:16:51that Tommy Hearns
01:16:52could no longer take a punch.
01:16:53They talked about his legs.
01:16:55They said that his legs
01:16:55were shot.
01:16:56It was just the opposite,
01:16:57even though there were times
01:16:58throughout the course
01:16:58of the fight
01:16:59when he was quite wobbly.
01:17:00He was hurt,
01:17:01and Sugarhead Leonard
01:17:01came in and did
01:17:02exactly what he needed
01:17:03to do,
01:17:03ripped those double F-tooks
01:17:04to the body and the head,
01:17:05but he couldn't get
01:17:06Tommy out of there.
01:17:07And this one will,
01:17:08you think there'll be
01:17:08some debates
01:17:09over the next month?
01:17:10Oh, absolutely,
01:17:11without a doubt.
01:17:11One of the things
01:17:12that's quite surprising
01:17:13to me is the manner
01:17:14in which Tommy took the draw.
01:17:16Yeah, astonishing to me,
01:17:17considering the long wait.
01:17:19But I'll tell you,
01:17:20my theory on that is
01:17:21he feels he redeemed himself
01:17:23by simply fighting
01:17:25all the way with Leonard,
01:17:26proving that he was
01:17:27as good a man as Leonard,
01:17:28certainly in a very close fight.
01:17:30And I think that gave
01:17:31Tommy Hearns
01:17:32peace of mind, Jim,
01:17:33and that was what
01:17:33this was all about,
01:17:34apparently.
01:17:35And every place
01:17:36that he goes,
01:17:37people will tell him,
01:17:38we know you won it.
01:17:39Talking about Tommy.
01:17:40They may well,
01:17:41that's for sure.
01:17:41Well, whoever called
01:17:42this fight a war
01:17:43should be given
01:17:44a gold medal themselves
01:17:45because that's exactly
01:17:46what it was,
01:17:47an absolute war
01:17:48between Thomas Hearns
01:17:49and Sugar Ray Leonard.
01:17:51Okay, let's talk about
01:17:52talk about gold medals.
01:17:53Let's talk about
01:17:53what happened
01:17:53in the undercard today.
01:17:55Well, for the Olympians,
01:17:56Michael Tabaha winning
01:17:57in the four rounds
01:17:58in a tough decision.
01:17:59Kennedy McKinney
01:18:00got all that he could want
01:18:02in winning a decision
01:18:03over David Marino.
01:18:05And then Robert Wayne Gila
01:18:06stunned winning
01:18:08a majority of decision
01:18:09in his fight.
01:18:10Andrew Maynard
01:18:11with a one-round knockout.
01:18:14And Ray Mercer,
01:18:16the Olympic gold medalist
01:18:17in the heavyweight division,
01:18:19just knocked
01:18:19Kent Crosby sideways
01:18:20in winning his fight
01:18:21in the first round.
01:18:22So the Olympians came through,
01:18:23some with flying colors,
01:18:24some not.
01:18:26One quick question, though.
01:18:27What does this do
01:18:27down the road?
01:18:28I wonder what Roberto Duran
01:18:29is thinking right now.
01:18:30Well, you know,
01:18:30I'll tell you something.
01:18:31Roberto Duran
01:18:32looked quicker in his fight
01:18:33with Irene Barkley
01:18:34than these guys did.
01:18:35More hand speed
01:18:36and better combinations.
01:18:38I don't know if that means
01:18:39he'll beat
01:18:39either one of these guys,
01:18:41but we have to see
01:18:41what they decide to do.
01:18:43Do you think
01:18:43that the public
01:18:44will want another rematch?
01:18:45That is problematical.
01:18:47I don't know,
01:18:47and I think even both men
01:18:48were wondering about that,
01:18:50but it was exciting.
01:18:52Ah, absolutely.
01:18:54Unforgettable evening.
01:18:55Absolutely amazing.
01:18:56Let's go back downstairs
01:18:57right now
01:18:57and get some final comments.
01:18:58Let's go once again
01:18:59to Tim Ryan.
01:18:59Tim.
01:19:00All right, Jim.
01:19:01It was an unbelievable
01:19:02evening indeed,
01:19:03and I think the scorecard
01:19:04is very interesting indeed.
01:19:05There was a lot of discussion
01:19:06in the years following
01:19:08the first fight
01:19:09about whether or not
01:19:10there should be more
01:19:1010-8 rounds
01:19:11in rounds
01:19:12that don't have
01:19:13knockdowns in them.
01:19:14Tonight,
01:19:15in the two knockdown rounds
01:19:16scored by Hearns,
01:19:17all three judges
01:19:18scored them 10-8 rounds
01:19:19as one would expect.
01:19:20But however,
01:19:21in the 12th round
01:19:23and in the
01:19:25fourth,
01:19:26fifth round for Ray,
01:19:27there were 10-8 rounds scored.
01:19:28In the fifth,
01:19:29all judges scored 10-8 rounds,
01:19:31and in the 12th,
01:19:32Dalby Shirley gave Ray Leonard
01:19:33a 10-8 round.
01:19:34Your comments, Gil.
01:19:35Well, I think
01:19:36that the 12th round
01:19:37should have been
01:19:38a 10-8 round for Leonard.
01:19:39The two knockdowns
01:19:41certainly should have been
01:19:4110-8, maybe 10-7
01:19:43for Tommy Hearns.
01:19:44And the other round,
01:19:45the fifth round,
01:19:46should have been a 10-9 round.
01:19:47Well, and yet all three judges
01:19:48saw the fifth round 10-8
01:19:49for Leonard.
01:19:50So we've got the kind of
01:19:51controversy that boxing's used to.
01:19:53I was stunned,
01:19:54Marvin Hagler,
01:19:55that Tommy Hearns
01:19:56did not take this harder
01:19:58for something that has meant
01:19:59so much to him.
01:20:00What do you think of that?
01:20:01You know, especially when
01:20:01you fight a guy like
01:20:01a Sugar Ray Leonard,
01:20:02you've got to realize
01:20:03you've got to knock him out.
01:20:04You know, and that's
01:20:05to be honest with you,
01:20:06I felt as though
01:20:06that Tommy did edge the fight.
01:20:08Those two knockdowns
01:20:09should have been
01:20:09in a big favor of Tommy Hearns.
01:20:11Well, nonetheless,
01:20:12Tommy Hearns seemed at the end
01:20:13to be not all that upset.
01:20:15He had given everything he had,
01:20:16so did Ray Leonard.
01:20:17That's what we've come to expect
01:20:18of these two boxers
01:20:19over the years.
01:20:20They certainly did not disappoint.
01:20:22While the skills
01:20:22may not be there,
01:20:23while the hand speed
01:20:24that Al Bernstein referred to
01:20:25may not be there,
01:20:26the hearts are as big as ever, Gil.
01:20:28The hearts championship hearts,
01:20:29no question about it.
01:20:30Two great, great fighters.
01:20:32I thought they showed
01:20:33a lot of championship quality.
01:20:35Marvin, should there be
01:20:36a Hearns Leonard III?
01:20:37You know that's what's
01:20:38going to happen.
01:20:39They don't want me in there.
01:20:40I disagree.
01:20:41I think these guys
01:20:42have had enough of each other.
01:20:43I think they respect each other.
01:20:45I don't think we'll see
01:20:45a Leonard Hearns III.
01:20:47Marvin Hagler,
01:20:47what about you?
01:20:48Have you got a place
01:20:49in the picture?
01:20:50I'm going to movies
01:20:50because they don't got
01:20:51enough money for me.
01:20:52No interest in coming back,
01:20:53seriously?
01:20:54$20 million I mentioned,
01:20:55but then...
01:20:56$20 million would Mike get your...
01:20:57I think I can still get back
01:20:58to do better than that.
01:20:59Come on.
01:21:00But no, I think the movie's for me.
01:21:01The movies are for Marvin Hagler.
01:21:03Maybe the boxing rings
01:21:04are still for Hearns and Leonard.
01:21:06We'll find out.
01:21:07It was called the war.
01:21:09There's oftentimes labels
01:21:10that appear to be
01:21:11slightly out of whack
01:21:13in terms of hype,
01:21:14but I think at the end of 12,
01:21:15glorious rounds
01:21:16between two great champions,
01:21:18we did indeed see a war.
01:21:20Now let's return you back up
01:21:21to our tower position,
01:21:23Jim Hill and Al Bernstein.
01:21:26All right, Tim,
01:21:26thank you very much.

01:22:25Absolutely an incredible evening.
01:22:27Al, any final thoughts?
01:22:28Well, I think
01:22:29several things were proven.
01:22:30For one thing,

01:22:32of a fight these days,
01:22:33he does not lose the decision.
01:22:35And secondly,
01:22:36two very gallant warriors.
01:22:38Absolutely, without a doubt.
01:22:39Thank you so much
01:22:39for joining us
