00:11OK with me now is the brilliant
00:13head basketball coach at UNLV
00:15the running Rebels here Jerry
00:16Tarkany but we don't want to talk
00:17about basketball we want to talk
00:19about Kennedy McKinney because
00:21you're in a group a group of old
00:22twelve men but I know that you're
00:24mainly responsible for you're
00:25backing this young guy.
00:26Well we have five of us that are
00:27the primary people.
00:29We decided to form a corporation
00:31Las Vegas gloves and we signed up
00:34five fighters throughout three of
00:36them were Olympic fighters and
00:38McKinney was one of them and we're
00:40sponsoring them.
00:41We've hired Olympic coach Ken Adams
00:43as a trainer and it's going real
00:45great.
00:46We're having a lot of fun.
00:47You just mentioned a little while
00:48ago that you weren't really that
00:50nervous or that worried about him
00:51because you have a great deal of
00:52confidence in him.
00:53Well this is great.
00:54You know I'm pulling for him.
00:56I want him to win but I don't get as
00:57nervous like this I do when I'm my
00:59team playing so we don't have to
01:00have a towel but you have a couple
01:01of other fighters coming up tonight
01:02too don't we have one.
01:03Geely's fighting and I think he may
01:05be fighting next.
01:06He's a Kenyan fighter who won the
01:08one Olympic gold also.
01:10A lot of people don't know coach
01:11that you are really interested in
01:13helping develop young men outside
01:15of the sport of basketball.
01:16Why?
01:17Well you know I like young people
01:18really I like young kids.
01:20That's one reason why I stayed in
01:21college coaching so much.
01:23I really enjoy the kids and as I got
01:25to know these fighters they've been a
01:26lot of fun really they're they're
01:28great.
01:28All right coach thank you so much.
01:29Congratulations good luck with your
01:31fighters.
01:31Thank you Jim.
01:32Okay.
01:32Jarrett Harkinian the fine coach at
01:34UNLV and you talk about his
01:35fighter but we have another one
01:36coming up right now.
01:38Robert Wang Gila gold medalist as
01:40he takes on Buck Smith.
01:41Let's go to once again to Tim Ryan
01:42at ringside.
01:43Tim.
01:43All right Jim.
01:44Robert Wang Gila the gold medalist
01:46as you mentioned in the welterweight
01:48division at Seoul Korea.
01:49He's from Nairobi Kenya and a thoroughly
01:52delightful young man.
01:53His opponent is Buck Smith again a
01:55much more experienced professional
01:56twenty three one and one with 16
01:58knockouts twenty three years of
02:00age from Oklahoma City fighting
02:02out of the O'Grady stable.
02:03Of course that's Sean O'Grady was
02:05a lightweight champion of the
02:07world at one point his late
02:08father started that stable some
02:09time ago as we see the tail of
02:11the tape.
02:11Let's go to ring announcer Michael
02:14Buffer.
02:16And now ladies and gentlemen this
02:17battle is scheduled for six rounds
02:19and it's in a lovely division.
02:21The referee for this contest is
02:22Carlos Padilla.
02:25Introducing first fighting out of
02:26the blue parm.
02:28He's wearing the white trunks with
02:29black trim and weighs even 146
02:31pounds fighting out of Oklahoma
02:33City.
02:34A professional record and excellent
02:36one.
02:36Twenty two victories against only one
02:38defeated one draw.
02:40Sixteen KOs.
02:42Ladies and gentlemen untouchable.
03:06Olympic gold medal champion
03:10Robert Higguandila.
03:16The with the final instructions.
03:19To the boxers.
03:22Judges are Chuck Giampas and the
03:23Barton and Dave Moretti.
03:25Okay one year last week.
03:27You're going to box for six one.
03:29You were already giving instructions
03:30in your respective dressing room.
03:32Any question.
03:34I don't think he's on the cheap
03:37seconds will be responsible for
03:38any misbehavior of your season
03:40seconds that understood.
03:42OK seconds come on.
03:44Robert Higguandila.
03:44Robert Higguandila the first ever
03:46Kenyan to win a gold medal in
03:47boxing.
03:49And he gives us some credit to the
03:51former world champion Ayub Kahlouli
03:53from whom Sugar Ray Leonard lifted
03:55the junior middleweight crown
03:58some years back.
03:59Kahlouli another African boxer of
04:01some distinction and helped
04:03Higguandila when he was beginning
04:04his amateur career.
04:06Sixty five and four as an amateur
04:08but in against a pro by the name
04:10of Buck Smith from Oklahoma City.
04:1325 fights.
04:15In his record he's lost only once.
04:18Smith in white.
04:19Wangila in red.
04:21You know Tim Wangila looks a little
04:24awkward in the ring but he's a
04:25tremendous right hand puncher.
04:27Left hook to the body from Buck Smith.
04:30A little wild out there you know
04:32they've got to sit down.
04:34Buck looks a little older.
04:35How old is he?
04:36He's 23 years of age.
04:38According to information received
04:40and I asked him about it.
04:42Left by Wangila.
04:43He felt that left hook right there.
04:45He won't be running in like that for a while.
04:48He's running into the punch.
04:50These guys you've got to slow him down
04:51with punches like that.
04:52Right hand by Wangila.
04:59I see how Wangila's eyes when he
05:01gets to kill him he's got that
05:02killer angst and watch his eyes.
05:04Well you know in the Olympics he won
05:05all his five-spine knockouts.
05:06He can punch.
05:07No question about that.
05:10Remember Buck Smith has last only once.
05:13He's very awkward though one killer
05:14but he gets the job done.
05:16I guess that's all.
05:21He's a little awkward himself.
05:23They're well matched in awkwardness.
05:26I think Buck Buck is just wow Buck Smith.
05:29He's just wow.
05:30I was going to say I think Buck Smith
05:31wins the contest of awkwardness.
05:34Very awkward.
05:38He's the type of guy that you want to knock out
05:40and get him out of there early.
05:41You don't like to fight these type of guys.
05:43Because he comes diving in he could hit you
05:45with his head or whatever.
05:47He's like he's ready to swallow his mouthpiece
05:49the way he's chewing on it out there.
05:53He's staying out too far.
05:55He's going to get hit with a good shot.
05:57Well unless Wangila does get him out of there
05:59these guys both may get tired.
06:04You know they're both wanging the punches.
06:06There's no odds at anything in this fight.
06:08There's no odds.
06:11Well left hook by Smith.
06:12Nice.
06:13Smith's doing a good one.
06:16In the opening round scheduled for six.
06:18Hard to imagine that could go the distance
06:20the way they're winging.
06:22Can you imagine 22 fights like this.
06:25Well 24 actually fight that this guy has won
06:27this Buck Smith and I can see the reason why.
06:30Tell me the reason why.
06:31I think if you got knocked me out I got to knock you out.
06:34But how come it's always him that knocks the other guy out.
06:37I'm seeing it now.
06:39I can see by his awkwardness.
06:43Left score by Wangila.
06:44Right to the ear of Buck Smith.
06:46He's got to make the.
06:47He got to make Buck Smith.
06:48Respect him.
06:50That's all it is.
06:50He respects him right now.
06:52Yeah.
06:59And the round number one scheduled for six.
07:02Welderweights Robert Wangila.
07:04We got the Olympic gold medalist from Kenya.
07:05Hundred and forty eight pounds.
07:07Buck Smith came in at one forty six.
07:13Robert listen up one thing.
07:18First thing we got Robert.
07:20You gotta stop you.
07:21You have one.
07:22Utilizing the jab.
07:23And Adam talking.
07:24Take a while here.
07:26Go ahead Robert.
07:27Tommy.
07:27Where the waste bucket is.
07:31Come back.
07:32Come back.
07:33Every time you put that left hook.
07:34he's scored he's ready for it.
07:37Okay.
07:39That landed 11 out of 32 punches
07:42in the first round and seemed
07:44like that many to our eyes.
07:47But nonetheless they were they
07:49were winging them loud and long.
07:51Maybe wanted to hit.
07:54They landed somewhere.
07:57I talked to Buck Smith this
07:59morning same same angle same
08:01idea.
08:01Hey you know this guy won the
08:03gold medal nobody's ever heard
08:04of me I'm the experienced bro I'm
08:06here to show the world what I can
08:08do so you know he's going to give
08:09his best shot here against the
08:11Kenyan and there's one of his
08:13best shots but it missed by a
08:14mile.
08:15I think he made.
08:17He landed one.
08:18He landed his third left up.
08:20He felt that.
08:21I noticed how winging how when
08:23Giggler when he gets mad his eyes
08:25open up real wide.
08:26How would you like to have a guy
08:28in the front of you like that.
08:30But he's got a powerful left
08:31hook this Buck Smith.
08:32If I was one game I'd just calm
08:35myself down forget about the jab
08:36or anything else just measure this
08:38guy and when he comes in just
08:39drop a straight short right hand
08:40on him.
08:40This guy is so wild though.
08:42Well you know it's hitting a
08:44moving target we know that but I
08:46think just nice and straight.
08:47Even if he threw it in his chest
08:48off.
08:49He'll shoot it right to the body.
08:51He's headhunting.
08:52Well that's what he said.
08:53He'll hit something.
08:55There you go like that.
08:56That's what he's got to do.
09:01One Gilla drops in his right hand
09:03though.
09:03Real long one.
09:05Real long one.
09:05Every time one Gilla jabs he
09:08drops that right hand down
09:09around his rear end.
09:10He's really wide open for left
09:11hook.
09:11That's why the left hook is
09:12tagging him.
09:14That's those 11 punches on the
09:16punch that.
09:17But he'll learn.
09:17This is the only beginning part
09:18of his career.
09:19He'll learn.
09:20Well he won the Olympics.
09:21So he should look a little more
09:23skilled than he is up to this
09:25point.
09:26Well when you fight
09:27professionals you know there's
09:28a different deal between
09:29throwing amateur.
09:36that big left hook and he's
09:39rocked Longilla back to the
09:40rope.
09:41This guy is crazy.
09:42I like this but he's crazy.
09:45Now he looks like Marvin
09:46Hagel.
09:46He's fighting Southpaw.
09:49Leave the Southpaw alone.
09:51Never.
09:57Watch the big left hook.
10:00comes out with.
10:01I think that's his best punch
10:02that left hook.
10:03And I can see why he's got
10:04those 16 knockouts.
10:09He waits for you to finish and
10:10then he comes up with
10:11something.
10:13You got him something brother.
10:15You got him something.
10:16Okay fair enough.
10:22He was starting to breathe
10:23a little bit heavy Tim.
10:24Yeah he got caught with me in
10:25the second round.
10:27He got caught with some good
10:28left hooks in on that last one.
10:29at the beginning of this round.
10:33He keeps dropping that right
10:35hand down on his head.
10:36He's got time to bring it up.
10:38Because you can see that.
10:39Ducking down.
10:40Start bringing him up.
10:41Right there.
10:41Turn the right hand under that ladder.
10:43That's it.
10:44Turn the right hand under that ladder.
10:46Woof.
10:47Smith swinging the line of the left hook.
10:49He's got Wangila in trouble.
10:51He got pushed him back.
10:52And then picked him off the ropes
10:54from the left of the body.
10:55That was a rebound shot.
10:57Well.
10:58And they're counting a knockdown.
11:00They really pushed him down.
11:02And then when Wangila bounced off the ropes
11:05tagged him with the left of the body.
11:07The bell ends.
11:08All right.
11:09All right.
11:10Tim Wangila is a tired young man right now.
11:13He's got the crazy looking eyes.
11:15Don't worry about it.
11:15Don't worry about it.
11:16Let's go back and take a look at that.
11:18We can.
11:19We'll see what happened.
11:20You saw Buck Smith.
11:24Okay.
11:24Robert's hurt.
11:25We'll see it here.
11:27There it was.
11:27Left hook.
11:28First left hook was the one of the right.
11:29And we was talking about the uppercut.
11:31That was the uppercut.
11:33But what I like about it.
11:34Buck kept the pressure on him.
11:35But there he was just pushed in.
11:37And then as he bounced off the ropes
11:38Smith got in another left jab.
11:40Left of the belly rather.
11:42Well we mentioned that when he had dropped
11:44that right hand.
11:44Dropped both of them.
11:48See he's trying to get out of there.
11:49He's hurt.
11:51I like to see fights like this.
11:53As long as you don't have to get hurt.
11:55As long as I'm.
11:59Left hook to the body right hand.
12:01Okay.
12:01Let's go to work.
12:02Let's go to work.
12:02Round number three.
12:03Coming.
12:04Well to wait action.
12:07Robert Wangila.
12:08Against Buck Smith and Wangila.
12:10Three and O's a pro with one knockout.
12:12Has found himself in here against a wild
12:14punching Buck Smith who hit some damage
12:17in the second round.
12:18I noticed that Wangila's going back to
12:20basics now.
12:21He's got his hands up a little higher.
12:22And he's trying to box a little bit more.
12:24Settle down.
12:24That won't last too long.
12:26Because what he's doing is every time
12:27he's dropping the right hand down he
12:28leaves himself open.
12:31He's reaching.
12:32He's reaching with his punches.
12:35Combination landed by one.
12:37Yellow from the last exchange.
12:38Here comes Smith with that wild swinging
12:40left hook again.
12:44Every time Wangila jabs he drops that right hand.
12:48It's automatic.
12:49Well you know this Smith he don't look very strong.
12:51But he is.
12:52There's the.
12:53There's the hook.
12:54Says he drops that hand.
12:56Drops the right hand.
12:56Like you.
12:57And what this basically is is.
12:59It's Smith's hook against Wangia's straight right hand.
13:03Warning from Padilla to Wangia
13:05after throwing the right on the break.
13:10You can just see Wangia trying to measure him for that right hand.
13:13Yeah, but he drops him, but he don't bring it back quick enough.
13:16That's how he gets himself in trouble.
13:18Smith just missed with a right.
13:19What about the uppercut? Why don't he bring him up?
13:22That's how he got caught.
13:27See, this Buck Smith is so awkward.
13:29You never know what this guy's going to do.
13:32He gets down, he waits for you to keep punching,
13:34and then he comes with a big punch.
13:37There it was.
13:38Moff just missed with that left hook.
13:41Didn't miss that by more than an inch.
13:49There you go.
13:49Right hand by Wangia.
13:51Yeah, but he's reaching with it.
13:52Got to step in with the right hand.
13:54He's reaching out.
13:54He's reaching out.
13:54He's reaching out.
13:54He's reaching out.
13:55Turning his back.
13:56Smith is just taking a walk from himself now.
13:58No timeouts in boxing.
14:00Take a tasty break.
14:04What's he doing now, bro?
14:05What's he doing now?
14:07I wonder what's he thinking right now.
14:09Is he getting rest?
14:10Because he's breathing kind of hard out there, this Buck.
14:13Yeah, but you can hear him.
14:17How do you know which one you can hear?
14:19I can tell.
14:21Look at this.
14:24No damage done on those wild punches from Smith.
14:27Right in by Wongila.
14:29And a short right inside.
14:31Nice.
14:32Wongila seeing he's done some damage,
14:34trying to swing to the advantage here,
14:36but Smith wisely ties him up.
14:39Wongila hitting on the hole against Smith.
14:42Turned his back on him.
14:43Wongila wants to put him out.
14:44What about the uppercut?
14:45Is Smith tied for winging all those punches?
14:48Hit him, Robert! Hit him!
14:50Now we're still over 100 degrees here in Las Vegas,
14:52although the sun is dropping as evening approaches.
14:55No uppercut.
14:56He should be using his uppercut this one day.
14:57He should be using uppercuts when he got him tight like that.
15:04That's the end of round number three.
15:10Robert Wongila of Nairobi, Kenya,
15:13getting himself quite a professional experience
15:15against the swinging puncher Buck Smith from Oklahoma City.
15:19And the left hook right behind it, okay?
15:22You'll catch it.
15:23Meanwhile, you see Sugar Ray Leonard in his dressing room
15:26as it looks like perhaps he's watching this undercard
15:28with some interest in getting the hands prepared for the match ahead
15:33as they get the hand wraps on Thomas Hearns as well in his dressing room.
15:39And upcoming The War, Hearns and Leonard 2 here live from Caesar's Palace
15:44in Las Vegas, Nevada, the main event on tonight's card.
15:47And ahead, we'll see some more Olympic boxers.
15:50Andrew Maynard and Ray Mercer, the light heavyweight and heavyweight gold medalists
15:54from Seoul, Korea, the 1988 Olympic Games.
16:00Round four upcoming here.
16:02Robert Wangila and Buck Smith.
16:05Wangila from Kenyan Red, Buck Smith from Oklahoma City and White.
16:09This is the key round in the fight, Tim.
16:11Wangila was tied after the second round, expended a lot of energy in the third round.
16:15If he can have another good round back-to-back, he'll be okay.
16:18Nice.
16:18But, oh, no!
16:19Big left hook by Buck Smith.
16:25Markie was trying to just, just try to measure him.
16:29But he's waiting with it.
16:31Well, he pulls it back before he throws it too loud.
16:34It's kind of, you know, he telegrams the punch.
16:36He's trying to put power behind his punches, and he should just let him throw.
16:47When Smith makes him miss like that, he should throw that left hook.
16:50He should wing punches.
16:52He's allowing Wangila to throw too many punches without making him pay back.
16:57When he throws the right hand, he holds it out there.
17:00That's the time to let him throw the right hand and then counter with that left hook.
17:04That would be the right punch to throw it.
17:10There you go.
17:11There you go.
17:11Big left landed by Smith.
17:13Another one.
17:15Just missed, just missed the go-home punch though.
17:18Now he's a southpaw, Mark.
17:20He probably could play the southpaw anyway.
17:23Wangila getting some free right hand shots there.
17:25Smith trying to hold his left.
17:26Couldn't do it.
17:27Now he grabs it again, and Padilla separates them.
17:30Notice how Smith's holding his head down real low.
17:32That's when you can tell he's coming up with a big punch.
17:34Another right to the ear from Wangila.
17:38Now Wangila has knocked out everybody in the Olympics.
17:42He's hit Buck Smith with a lot of right hands, and nothing's happened.
17:48He's waiting.
17:49He's waiting.
17:49He's waiting.
17:50He's waiting.
17:51He's waiting.
17:51Come on.
17:52Come on.
17:54Come on.
17:55Come on.
17:56Come on.
17:57Say this for Buck Smith.
17:58He must have provided a lot of entertainment in Oklahoma City.
18:02In his pro fights.
18:03Oh, I can tell you.
18:04Another minute to go on round number four.
18:07With his style, you can never forget this guy.
18:11There's a good combination by Wangila.
18:13Finding some easy target now.
18:16Smith is dropping his hands.
18:17And he's not punching back Smith.
18:19That's the problem with Smith right now.
18:21He's resting.
18:22If Wangila misses or whatever, he just doesn't punch back.
18:27He seems like he don't care whether he's getting hit when he's down low like that.
18:32He'll take it just to try to get that big left hook off.
18:35Yeah, but he's not.
18:35He's not getting it off, Mom.
18:38Wangila.
18:39Come on.
18:39Sensing that, I think, has now been able to land about 40 scoring punches.
18:44It seems here without a reply.
18:50Right back.
18:51Right back.
18:51Going at him to work the body.
18:53Somebody's getting three head shots from Buck Smith,
18:55who's been dropping his hands,
18:57leaving himself open into the final seconds of round four.
19:02I noticed that one guy that keeps his head up, though.
19:04He's got his head up a lot.
19:06It's kind of dangerous with a guy, especially like, you know, Buck Smith.
19:10Robert, listen up one second here.
19:11Robert, listen up one second.
19:13You know what I'm saying?
19:14You understand?
19:14You know what?
19:15You know how we don't listen.
19:16But I can keep up.
19:17No, you gotta get his attention.
19:18You know how we do it?
19:20You know how we do it?
19:20You know how we do it?
19:21We don't know how to throw the body punches.
19:26Who's leading?
19:27The uppercut.
19:28Don't worry about who's leading right now, okay?
19:30Don't worry about who's leading.
19:31You just listen to me, okay?
19:33Listen, Robert.
19:34Throw the jab and the uppercut.
19:36Right behind it, okay?
19:37Right hand, left hook.
19:39Jab, right hand, left hook.
19:40Jab, right hand, left hook.
19:41You'll catch him with the left hook every time.
19:44All right?
19:44If you want the fight, Buck, last two rounds.
19:46Every time you throw punches and hurt him, the best defense is offense.
19:51Get on top of him, just like Rodney Porter.
19:53Stay on top of him.
19:54If you want this fight, you gotta go take it.
19:55Come on.
19:56Come on.
19:56Two rounds.
19:56Good enough, okay?
19:59Good enough.
20:02Well, you heard a corner for Robert Longela telling him what to do here.
20:07Don't worry about what the score is at this point.
20:09We have him ahead, but of course, it was a knockdown scored somewhat suspect by Buck Smith,
20:13but it was counted.
20:15Well, the corner Buck Smith said if you want this fight, you gotta go and take it.
20:19And that's the name of the game.
20:20Well, they also said, put the punches together.
20:23If you want to throw that left hook, you'll catch him with the left hook every time.
20:26But Buck Smith just is not punching enough right now.
20:35Buck Smith backing up Wangeela.
20:39And Wangeela ducks under a while left hook.
20:42And this stays right after him.
20:44He's hurting Wangeela, you know.
20:45He's hurt.
20:46Another big punch like that, I think we can go home right away.
20:50But Smith, again, is not punching, Bob.
20:52Yeah.
20:52I think he's catching his wrist.
20:56Every time he throws it, he knocks him off balance and everything.
20:59And Smith suddenly looks very, very tired.
21:03He was late, threw a few punches, got very tired.
21:08In the fifth round of the heat of the Las Vegas desert,
21:12Sun just washing the spectators across the ring from us as it's falling behind us,
21:16but it's still plenty hot here.
21:18He has so many opportunities, Smith does, to throw punches, and he just won't throw them.
21:23When you see him dipping, waiting to throw it, you can tell he's going to do it.
21:25He's telegraphing it.
21:27He just doesn't throw any punches.
21:28Wangeela makes every mistake in the book.
21:30He drops his right hand.
21:31He puts his head up in the air for you to hit him.
21:33Smith just won't throw a punch.
21:35Oh, this guy, this one, he was so, so, so vulnerable with that left hook.
21:42Come on, Robert.
21:44Come on, Robert.
21:45No way.
21:46Ten down.
21:51Again, Buck Smith teeing off with the left, but he missed it.
22:00When he turns out, he just doesn't punch.
22:04We may have an interesting last round.
22:06Maybe Buck is saving himself for the last three minutes, Bob.
22:09I believe so.
22:12There's a left landed by Smith.
22:15Right out on the end of it, Wangeela picks it up for the second.
22:18Now he's right-handed.
22:23He's able to see, though, Smith.
22:27Now he's stopped again.
22:29Oof!
22:29That one got through and landed.
22:35Wangeela not punching back.
22:37There's a right hand.
22:37Under 30 seconds we go in round five.
22:40They're both very, very tired, and with the punches they've been throwing,
22:43they've been wanging them.
22:45That takes a lot out of you, especially if you miss.
22:47You know, it takes a lot out of you.
22:54Coming to the end of round number five,
22:57neither fighter has been able to accomplish much in this round.
23:01I think this Buck, this Buck Smith has problems.
23:03He is switching from right back to right and southpaw.
23:09Well, we've got three rounds for Wangeela, two for Buck Smith,
23:14including his knockdown round two,
23:16so the issue may be settled.
23:18The final round.
23:20I think that's just what it is right now.
23:22I think Wangeela has to win this round.
23:24Okay.
23:25And I think Smith can win it if he throws punches.
23:27But you throw the jab, throw the right uppercut right up under it.
23:29Okay.
23:30I got it very even.
23:30The guy, when the guy is bending down, Robert, you got to throw the uppercuts.
23:34Okay.
23:35You got to.
23:36Okay.
23:36He's going to give you some water.
23:37It's the last round.
23:39You got three minutes.
23:41Every time you throw punches, you hit the guy and hurt him.
23:44Look, if you want the fight, you got to go take it.
23:47Take it to him, Buck.
23:47Gamble.
23:48Gamble.
23:48Go right to him and try to take him out of there.
23:50Gamble.
23:50There's nothing to lose there.
23:52Sean Gibbons and Ralph Citro telling Buck Smith.
23:55Go for it, Sean.
23:56Come on.
23:58Champion of Oklahoma City, I guess.
24:00But he's got a chance here to impress against the gold medalist.
24:04And in the sixth round, two Olympians have not been in easy tonight.
24:09Having to go the distance.
24:10Kennedy McKinney and Buck Smith.
24:11And Robert Mangeela, pardon me.
24:13Let's see how Buck Smith, this is the last round.
24:16He should be really carrying the fight right now if he wants to win this fight.
24:20He's turning southpaw right now.
24:22He's right-handed.
24:23I think he's confused as well.
24:24He don't know which is right here or left here.
24:26Big left hook that time.
24:28Again, missed by a half inch.
24:30Like I said, when you miss shots like that, it takes a lot out of you.
24:33He's going for a hard run.
24:35Mangeela giving him the opportunity.
24:37Standing still on the ropes over there, not just trying to hold on.
24:40Mangeela looks very, very tired.
24:41His legs is wobbling around pretty good right now.
24:44I think you could push him down, Mark.
24:45Yeah, he don't know what this guy's going to do.
24:47Watch this.
24:48Look at his head.
24:48Look at his head.
24:49Look at what Mangeela's head.
24:53Look at him.
24:55This is the mound.
25:00I don't know if you mentioned that Mangea opens those eyes wide.
25:03He hasn't opened those eyes wide now.
25:04No, he made it to kick it over.
25:06Quick right hand by Mangea.
25:09Mangea right by Smith, fell short.
25:12I would say to anyone who wins this round is the one that's going to win this round.
25:15This is the main round.
25:17And Smith started out very well.
25:19Now he stopped punching again.
25:20And then the left hook winging.
25:22Look at that head.
25:23Smith and his head and shoulders.
25:25You know, you can't miss Mangea when he throws a punch.
25:28He lifts that head up in the air.
25:29So you can't miss it.
25:32And now Smith is doing the right thing because even if he charges, that's what Gene Fulman
25:36used to do.
25:37He's telegraphed.
25:38He's telegraphed.
25:39Hook Smith is telegraphed and then he's going to throw that hook.
25:43Well, this is the first time in the fight he's even been landing some jabs.
25:47He's not punching.
25:48He's standing in.
25:49Not much sting in the punches of Mangea.
25:53Scoring with him, but certainly has lost some zip here.
25:55He's into the sixth round for the first time in his boxing career.
26:00Never had to fight more than three as an amateur and has had a couple of four-rounders as a
26:04pro.
26:08Well, this could be the last 50 seconds.
26:11What does what?
26:16Things are sure.
26:17Buck is helping to air-condition the outdoor stadium here.
26:20And I appreciate it.
26:21And he's pulling my hair around.
26:24Yeah, brush it out of your eyes.
26:26You can always see the fight.
26:29Gail is scoring inside, but he came without a whole lot on it.
26:32He's not hurting Smith at all.
26:33You know, I really wouldn't want to be a judge in this fight.
26:36Tough one.
26:38Final round.
26:39Under the 30-second mark we go.
26:45Robert Wanguila's 3-0 is a pro with one KO.
26:48Finding himself a very difficult opponent in the experience,
26:52that erratic, Buck Smith.
26:54Oh, and there's that left hook.
26:56Get him upside the head with it, but...
26:57We didn't have anything under it.
27:00No, I don't think so.
27:01It should not be more of a slap.
27:02And that's the end of it.
27:04Six rounds a distance.
27:06The welterweight's Robert Wanguila in red.
27:08The gold medalist in 1988 from Nairobi, Kenya,
27:13and Buck Smith from Oklahoma City.
27:15A very willing and certainly entertaining left hooker from the state of Oklahoma.
27:23Well, I'll go out on a limb and say that Wanguila is going to win a close decision.
27:27Yeah, I'll go right with you.
27:29Just by a little better boxing skills and a little busier with his hands.
27:36Well, you can see that Wanguila certainly threw more punches, according to our eight statisticians here,
27:41landing only 26% of them.
27:43And Smith with an only slightly higher percentage.
27:47And throwing far fewer.
27:50But more damaging punches.
27:52Well, I think so.
27:53Of course, he did score the knockdown.
27:55However, suspect it might have been back in round number two.
27:57It was counted by referee Carlos Padilla.
28:00So, it's in the hands of the judges.
28:01Chuck Giampa, Cindy Barton, and Dave Moretti.
28:04And I go along with punch that for Wanguila.
28:09Let's go up the ring announcer, Michael Buffer.
28:13The official scoring.
28:15Cindy Barton scored about 57 and 57.
28:18She hasn't even.
28:19Chuck Giampa scores about 58, 55.
28:23And Dave Moretti scores at 59, 55 for the winner.
28:27By the majority decision, still on the piano of the team, Wanilla.
28:40Well, there is Robert Wanguila.
28:42Gets a decision over Buck Smith and goes to 4-0 as a professional.
28:47We'll be watching for more from that exciting young man.
28:49And now let's go to Al Bernstein.
28:52Well, the toughest test to be sure yet for Robert Wanguila
28:56as he gets quite a tough test from Buck Smith.
28:59Well, as we sit here and await Leonard Hearns DeLore,
29:02number two we can all remember vividly back to September 16, 1981.
29:06For their first matchup, it was to unify the welterweight title right here at Caesars Palace.
29:12It turned out to be a terrific fight.
29:14A match which had many ebbs and flows.
29:17Hearns doing well early.
29:18Leonard coming on in the sixth and seventh round.
29:21And then coming on after Hearns decided to be the boxer later in that fight.
29:26Sugar Ray Leonard showing his power and doing quite well against Tommy Hearns.
29:31And even in that match, as that match ended, of course,
29:34everyone was wondering about the future of these two fighters.
29:37They were wondering, in fact, would there ever be a rematch?
29:40Remember?
29:43You know, I don't have too much to say.
29:45You know, I proved myself.
29:47I think all the ultimate questions should be asked of Tommy Hearns and his managers and trainers.
29:52You know, I proved that I'm the best welterweight in the world.
29:55You have to answer the rest of the questions.
29:57The problem was, it was two champions in the same division and one of us had to be eliminated.
30:04And then I say, Detroit, I shall return.
30:11And indeed, Tommy Hearns has returned 16 times since that match with Sugar Ray Leonard.
30:17And this crowd's settling in, and you can hear getting excited, getting ready for the 12-round WBC Super Middleweight
30:24Championship.
30:25They hardly need introductions, do they?
30:28Sugar Ray Leonard and Tommy Hearns.
30:29That's coming up a bit later, but we've got a lot more boxing action.
30:33So let's send things down now to Tim Ryan at ringside.
30:37All right, Al, here at ringside.
30:39Next up will be Andrew.
