00:00Shams Tarani reporting in the NBA, the Celtics have agreed to trade Jalen Brown of the 76ers for Paul George,
00:06two first round picks, and then, let's see, and two second round picks.
00:11So that's the deal. Celtics have agreed to trade Jalen Brown of the 76ers for Paul George, two first round
00:16picks, and two second round picks.
00:18So what this instantly means is that the Cavs are out, obviously, in the Jalen Brown sweepstakes, which means, I
00:25think that also, that's a hit for the, let's get LeBron here.
00:28And that's also a hit for how do we shake, how do we shake up this roster and how do
00:33we change this thing in a meaningful way?
00:35How do the Cavs get this thing different? Right now, it feels like the only eggs you have left in
00:41the basket, they're all occupied by LeBron James.
00:45That's the only way you can make an actual big enough move and change at this point to have anyone
00:50tipping the odds in your favor or at least putting you into the NBA finals.
00:54And I would argue LeBron himself doesn't necessarily do that.
00:58What I always loved was the idea that you trade for Jalen Brown and then you get LeBron, the BOGO,
01:04the buy one, get one we talked about earlier, right?
01:06If you get Jalen Brown, it tells LeBron, as wind horse has indicated, that you are serious and you're willing
01:12to make the changes and you're willing to go ahead and do what it takes to impress LeBron in a
01:16way.
01:17And then that would mean you get LeBron as well. Now that's gone. He goes to the 76ers. Massive shakeup
01:23across the NBA.
01:24Yep. And that very well may send LeBron to Golden State.
01:28Yeah, I mean, it might. Legitimately, it might. Because what are you selling LeBron on anything outside of it's just
01:35what's just feelings at this point.
01:36Right. That's all it is. You're selling him on the return home with the idea that you're going to have
01:41standing ovations every single night and you have a bunch of adulation.
01:44Yep.
01:45And that's maybe one thing that Golden State can't necessarily occupy. But the idea that you're selling him on some
01:50sort of championship caliber team.
01:53Well, LeBron, it's just adding you, buddy. That's it. It's not adding Jalen Brown. It's not adding another superstar.
01:58And the 76ers, you're talking two first-round picks, two second-round picks. Those are things the Cleveland Cavaliers did
02:04not have.
02:05No. No, they didn't. And so that's kind of blockbuster across the NBA.
02:09Remember the conversation we had about Evan Mobley and having to pick up the pieces whenever this thing, whenever this
02:14train ride comes to an end for the Cavaliers?
02:17Yeah.
02:18Yeah. If you thought the post-LeBron 1.0 and the post-LeBron 2.0, those first three years in
02:27those stretches, or even the couple of years leading up to LeBron 1.0,
02:33if you thought those were painful, whenever this iteration of the Cavaliers comes to an end, right, and they have
02:40to reset and whatnot,
02:43it might be just as painful, if not more painful. It might be 26-game losing streak painful. I remember
02:50those days. I covered a lot of those games.
02:52Well, but you still have Evan Mobley, is the point here. And I believe that Evan Mobley himself is not
02:58going to make you...
02:58Wait a minute. Tom, you don't get to act like I'm keeping Evan Mobley. It's good news for them.
03:01You didn't let me finish. I was going to attack the people that think that Evan Mobley is going to
03:04save the franchise.
03:06That was the whole point I'm trying to make, is the idea that the people that think that because you
03:10still have Evan Mobley,
03:11you're going to be some sort of great team, you're arguing the point for me.
03:14I thought, if anything, you were coming over to my side. You just said...
03:18I can't bring myself to come to your side.
03:19But it feels like you just did. It feels like the reality set in.
03:22That, like, post this, whatever two years is...
03:25All I know is Mike Gansey's having himself a hell of an offseason in Philadelphia.
03:30Well, and that's another side of that as well. When we can get to that angle on it, we'll get
03:34to all the angles on it.
03:342-1-6-4-7-4-0-0-92. Blockbuster across the NBA.
03:37Could the Browns have gotten Jalen Brown, if Mike Gansey was still in here,
03:41and Cleland. I'm kidding.
03:42Brown couldn't do anything.
03:42All right, but Jalen Brown to the 76ers means he's not coming to the Cavs,
03:47which means the Cavs' options now for this upcoming season, extremely limited, all things considered.
03:53You got to hope you get LeBron, and you got to hope that's enough to shake it up.
03:58I just, this is not good news for getting LeBron.
04:00If the notification was Jalen Brown to the Cavs, then I also say we get LeBron.
04:08Now, no idea, no clue. I would lean it towards Golden State.
04:12This is what happens when your superstar goes on a live stream and says he had the best season
04:18and most fun he's ever had in his life in a year that you got taken out by the 76ers
04:23in the first round.
04:24Like, this is the repercussions of that.
04:27When you're, in many ways, I'm going to relate this to the Miles Garrett trade, okay?
04:31When your superstar player throws a tantrum, and Miles did a year prior to being traded,
04:37but we all know the result there, and we all know what he was going for, right?
04:40And he was rewarded for doing it, too.
04:41When you throw a tantrum, and when you make comments, and you say you don't want to be here,
04:46and you're having, and I mean, let's be honest, Brown did this seven different times in different ways,
04:51talking about how much fun he had this last year, and the idea was that Tatum wasn't there.
04:56Tatum was injured, so he got to have all this fun, he wanted to be tweeting out about how he
05:00wants to be a lead dog,
05:01all these other type of things, right?
05:03The idea that the Browns got what they got in the Miles Garrett trade,
05:07you're not supposed to end up, even considering that you win these type of trades,
05:13where it's so obvious the player doesn't want to be here, okay?
05:16While you're supposed to get deep-pantsed in these trades, Brad Stevens is great at this.
05:22Brad Stevens is not a buffoon.
05:24Brad Stevens is great at this, and Mike Gansu, who's been now in charge of a program for 12 seconds,
05:33took him to the woodshed in this.
05:36Because that's what happens when you have no leverage.
05:39And, I mean, honestly, I don't disagree with the sentiment that what Brad Stevens probably should have done
05:44is sit down with Jalen Brown, all his people, and be like, you're going to have to get over it,
05:48because we're not going to get anything close to value that we want out of you,
05:51so you just get over it, find a way, because this trade is great.
05:55You get 36-year-old Paul George, you're going to get some first-rounders that are just,
05:59like, all right, what is that?
06:01I mean, like, I...
06:02You know what this trade reminds me of?
06:03All right.
06:04You know what this trade reminds me of?
06:05What's that?
06:07When the Cavs traded Kyrie Irving to the Celtics.
06:10Oh, the Isaiah Thomas deal.
06:12Yeah, I feel like...
06:13You know what?
06:14Oh, this is good.
06:15You got a Northeast Ohio native, and Mike Gansey now running the 76ers,
06:20and he just robbed the Celtics blind.
06:22This is payback.
06:23Cavs don't benefit.
06:24They suffer, but this is definitely payback for Mike Gansey ripping off the Celtics for Jalen.
06:30I can't believe this.
06:32I mean, the terms that Sham Sharania has reported here in this trade are obscene.
06:38Go ahead. Read them out.
06:39Here they are.
06:3920-28 first-round pick that could convert from a first to a swap that is more favorable to Boston.
06:47A 20-31 unprotected Philadelphia first.
06:50Okay.
06:5120-28 second-round selection that's the most favorable between, I guess, the Warriors, Thunder, and Milwaukee pick.
07:01And a 20-30 second-round pick most favorable of a Washington, Portland, or Phoenix pick.
07:09This is highway robbery here.
07:11I mean, great job by Mike Gansey.
07:13Give him his flowers.
07:14He pulled off a hell of a trade and a coup here by pulling this off.
07:19But, man, what a bunch of idiots the Boston Celtics are.
07:23And so, I like a lot of what the 76ers have.
07:30I just do.
07:31I like Tyrese Maxey.
07:32I like Edgecombe.
07:34Joel Embiid's not my favorite.
07:35I don't think this is some great team, Daryl.
07:37I don't.
07:38I think, actually, the good news out of this might be the idea that Boston is taking a significant hit.
07:43They're not going to be.
07:44They were the favorites as of earlier today.
07:46They were the favorites to come out of the East, okay?
07:48According to my betting people, my friends in the desert, right?
07:50It was Boston was number one.
07:51The Knicks were number two.
07:52I would imagine after the Jalen Brown trade and getting 36-year-old Paul George in return, I would imagine
07:57that flips.
07:58So, the Knicks are now going to be the favorite in the East.
08:00And then we go ahead and we kind of pick up the pieces from there.
08:03As far as the East getting better in all of this, I don't see that being the case.
08:09I look at this more.
08:10Do you think the 76ers become more dangerous with this?
08:13I mean, they're definitely more dangerous.
08:14They're a better team.
08:15I just don't think they're going to win with Joel Embiid.
08:17And maybe I'll be proven wrong on that.
08:19But as of right now, history's on my side in that equation, okay?
08:23I don't think they're going to be good enough.
08:25I love Edgecombe.
08:25I really do.
08:26I think he's going to be great.
08:27I like Maxey an awful ton.
08:29There's a lot of the 76ers team that I like.
08:31Like, I don't think they're a juggernaut.
08:32And I don't think they're going to be a juggernaut this year with this.
08:36It's going to be fascinating to see what happens with Brown, especially with him being the main
08:39guy in charge and all this.
08:41But I can't rely on Embiid to be healthy, nonetheless be consistently awesome.
08:45And so, if you take Embiid out of the equation between Maxey, Edgecombe, and then what you'd
08:50have with Brown, it's a fine team.
08:52It's not a bad basketball team by any stretch, but it screams 4C to me.
08:56So, here you go.
08:58Where does this leave the Cavs?
08:59When you look at the Eastern Conference, right, the Raptors just got Kawhi back, okay?
09:03You've got the Knicks.
09:03And the Raptors, I think the Raptors right now have better odds than the Cavs do to come
09:06out of the East.
09:07Yeah, the Knicks are the defending champions.
09:09Because of the Kawhi trade, yeah.
09:10But you've got the 76ers, the Heat getting Giannis, right?
09:14Detroit.
09:15Detroit's gotten better in the past couple days.
09:16Right.
09:17Where does this put the Cavaliers?
09:19I know, it's tough.
09:19We're kind of in that little bit of a mess between, somewhere between, I don't know,
09:244th to 7th.
09:25And it's not, you could be either one.
09:27You could be four, or you could be seven right now.
09:29And so, it's not great.
09:30But the trade out of this...
09:32Seven is play-in, right?
09:33Yeah.
09:34Yeah.
09:35I think right now, according to...
09:36Could you imagine the look on Dan Gilbert's face if the Cavaliers were in the play-in tournament
09:40next year?
09:40So, this is the sad part about this, is that if you don't get Jalen Brown, which obviously
09:44they don't get Jalen Brown now, what are your options?
09:46What are you relying on?
09:47You now have all your eggs in the LeBron basket, and you didn't do anything to showcase to
09:52him that you've gotten better this offseason.
09:54All you've done is lose pieces, and I'm not going to make a big deal about losing Dean
09:58Wade and Keon Ellis.
09:59That's not the point.
10:00The point is, you have a roster that I don't believe can already...
10:03I don't think Donovan's winning a title unless he had another running mate that is going
10:07to be close to him.
10:08Jalen Brown would have been that, okay?
10:10He would have been that.
10:11You don't have that now.
10:12Yeah, because I don't think it's James Harden.
10:14It's not.
10:14It's 37-year-old Harden.
10:16He's going to average 20-7.
10:17He's a fine player.
10:18I like James Harden a lot.
10:20He's not what Jalen Brown would have been.
10:22He's not going to be the 11th best player in the NBA.
10:25You needed someone like that, some sort of sizzle, some sort of pop.
10:29And so not only does it not impress LeBron, because you weren't able to go ahead and shake
10:33it up, the fans, you guys, Cavs fans, if they don't get LeBron, and it looks like now
10:41they're staring down that path, I mean, where's the interest going to come from?
10:46They did nothing in a Dan Gilbert tweet, expressing that they were going to change everything and
10:52make this look different and do everything he possibly can.
10:55And I'm paraphrasing, obviously, but they have done the exact opposite of that.
10:59They have done absolutely nothing to this point.
11:02No Giannis for you in Boston, but you get Paul George.
11:05The funniest thing I just saw was on the Deadspin feed.
11:09I mean, it said, it said, Paul George on the Celtics, and it was a picture of Shaquille
11:15in the Celtics uniforms.
11:16I saw that as a tweet, though.
11:18Oh, my goodness.
11:19He's 36-year-old Paul George.
11:20I mean, it's so good.
11:22My goodness.
11:23I don't know.
11:25Hey, you know what?
11:26Maybe the Celtics can trade Paul George to the Warriors, too.
11:30LeBron could go to Golden State, and they'd have the all-arthritis team.
11:35Daryl, if LeBron even signed with the Cavs, they haven't done enough to shake this in
11:40any sort of way that would give you the confidence that they're coming out of the East.
11:44Obviously, it would move the needle a little bit.
11:47You missed out on Giannis.
11:48You missed out on Jalen Brown.
11:49You missed out on the pieces that would have really shaken this thing up.
11:52And to play into what you have been arguing all day, I'm going to throw the kerosene on
11:58the fire here just after 630.
12:01All that to keep Evan Mobley.
12:03All that to keep Evan Mobley.
12:04Congratulations.
12:04I hope everyone really enjoys losing in a 10-9 matchup five years from now because
12:11Evan Mobley's on the team.
12:12Thanks.
12:12I hope we enjoy that.
12:16It's tough.
12:18I mean, there's no other way.
12:19This is tough.
12:20Did I do that right, by the way?
12:22I guess so.
12:22It didn't make me feel good, so I think that's mission accomplished.
12:25Yeah, I wasn't trying to make you feel any better.
12:27But it's not.
12:27I mean, it goes to my point more than it goes to anything.
12:30These people that want to hang on to Evan Mobley for what?
12:33So that's five years from now.
12:35And that's a long five-year projection, by the way.
12:38But when this thing's burned down to the studs and the house is on fire and there's nothing
12:42but rubble left, you got Evan Mobley to pick up the pieces, and you're enjoying watching
12:46us battle out to be a 10-9 matchup in the play-in round.
12:49Congratulations.
12:50Yeah.
12:50Well, and...
12:51Like, you have Evan Mobley and you could have used a trade.
12:53I'm sorry.
12:53You need to be better now.
12:54Well, and what this tells me is that Evan better really validate...
13:01When you talk about pressure, pressure's now on Evan Mobley because he better validate
13:06Kobe Altman's faith and belief in him.
13:07That's a good point.
13:08Yeah.
13:08Because...
13:09He's got to live up to some of these expectations at some point.
13:11Yeah.
13:12You know, at some point, you can't just hide behind...
13:17Well, he's a young up-and-coming player.
13:19No, he's got...
13:20He's going into year six.
13:21Correct, yeah.
13:22Okay, at some point, you've got to do it on a consistent basis.
13:25Yes, we've seen glimpses of greatness from this guy, but the offensive game has...
13:33You know, the self-creation in the offensive game, I should say, has never really developed.
13:38He's gotten a little better shooting the three-pointer, even though I absolutely hate the fact that
13:43they're having him shoot threes, but I get it.
13:45I understand that's the way the game's played now.
13:47Seven-footer's got to shoot threes all of a sudden.
13:50But, like, there's a lot of...
13:52I think there's a lot of pressure on him now going forward because he's the guy that they
13:57kept and did not get Giannis, and now he's the guy they kept not to get Jalen Brown.
14:02I'm bummed.
14:03There's no other way to describe it, Darrell.
14:05I'm bummed.
14:05You know, ever since this news broke, your mood, and this isn't a criticism, you...
14:13I'm bummed out.
14:14I'm genuinely bummed out.
14:15The air has come out of the balloon.
14:17The energy with which you were firing in all cylinders early in this show, and right now,
14:23I can tell you are just absolutely devastated by this news.
14:26You seem shocked, too.
14:28I am shocked.
14:28I didn't think the 76ers were in play, and I don't know why.
14:32Maybe it's the wind-horsed audio.
14:33Maybe it's just how this whole off-season had been trending.
14:36I had convinced myself that the Cavs were going to make a big swing, and a big swing is either
14:40Giannis or Jalen Brown, and now both are not on the table, and they're going to have to
14:45rely on somehow landing LeBron James while, in the process of it, not doing any changes
14:50to showcase to LeBron that this is going to be any different.
14:53And so, yes, it's a gut punch.
14:54There's no other way to describe it right now.
14:57I'm bummed.
14:58And shame on myself for maybe buying into the idea that this team was going to change and
15:04shake it up in some sort of drastic way, but I didn't see any other way out.
15:07They have a belief in this Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley thing that I just don't.
