00:07Und als wir kommen auf den AIR heute,
00:08gerade jetzt, Iran ist klaiming
00:10dass ihre Militärer in den Regen struck
00:11U.S. Army positions in den Region.
00:14Right now, wir sehen keine confirmation
00:15von der United States Seite.
00:17Und, of course, Iran hat Lied
00:19oder Exageratet über ihre attacks
00:21in den letzten Jahren.
00:22Aber hier ist warum das Matters.
00:23Denn das Claim ist kommen
00:25nach der United States
00:26unleashed ihren ersten Airstrikes
00:27since die zwei countries signed
00:29das Memorandum of Understanding
00:31nine days ago.
00:33Es war ein Understanding
00:34which was supposed
00:35to cool things down
00:36as zwei sides were trying
00:37to hash out a peace deal.
00:39Right now, CENTCOM ist saying
00:40those strikes that they did
00:42conduct and carry out today
00:43are in response
00:44to that Iranian drone attack
00:46on a cargo ship
00:47in the Strait of Hormuz.
00:49Vice President J.D. Vance,
00:50who's been leading the peace talks
00:51for the United States side,
00:53said, quote,
00:54violence will be met with violence.
00:56His boss had hinted
00:58this afternoon
00:58that strikes were coming
00:59although he spent a lot
01:01of the day rolling out
01:02a political message
01:03that he's been workshopping
01:04ahead of the midterm elections.
01:08These are not social Democrats.
01:10These are hardcore,
01:12godless communists.
01:13They're godless communists.
01:14All communists are godless.
01:16They don't believe in God.
01:18This is the most serious threat
01:20to our country
01:20since its existence,
01:22in my opinion,
01:24250 years ago.
01:25this is a major threat
01:26to our country.
01:29That was the president
01:30while addressing
01:31Christian conservatives
01:32and referring to
01:33House primary victories
01:34that happened this week
01:35by Democratic socialists
01:36here in New York City
01:38who had been backed
01:39by the New York City mayor,
01:40Zoran Mamdani.
01:41While Democrats themselves
01:43have been wrestling
01:43with what Tuesday night means
01:45for the direction
01:46of their party,
01:47socialism,
01:48much less Democratic socialism,
01:50is not communism.
01:51Still,
01:52the night of New York primaries,
01:53that night,
01:54you saw the president.
01:55He stayed up past 2.30
01:56in the morning.
01:57At one point,
01:58he posted, quote,
01:59America the beautiful
02:00will never be a communist country.
02:03Today, he laid out a prediction
02:05that borderlined apocalyptic.
02:09It's happening right now
02:11in New York
02:11and California,
02:14but you'll start living
02:15in squalor.
02:17You'll live in squalor.
02:18There will be no food.
02:19There will be no housing.
02:20There will be no military.
02:21There will be no law and order.
02:23There will be no nothing.
02:24There will be no nothing.
02:26You'll be a third world
02:28inhabitant
02:29in every way,
02:30and everyone will suffer
02:31or die.
02:32You'll suffer or die.
02:33This is what happens.
02:36Suffer and die,
02:37the president says.
02:38The House Speaker,
02:39Mike Johnson,
02:39offered up his own attempt
02:41at framing the importance
02:42and what is on the line
02:43this November.
02:46If we were to lose
02:48the midterms,
02:48heaven forbid,
02:49these Democrats,
02:51y'all, impeachment
02:51is not even the big concern.
02:52They will turn
02:53every committee of Congress
02:54into an investigative body
02:55and they'll go after
02:55the president's family,
02:56the cabinet,
02:57his donors and friends.
02:58Half of you in this room
02:59will be targeted.
03:01I run the protection program.
03:02I'll take care of you.
03:03Okay, we're going to win.
03:05The question tonight
03:06is can the House Speaker
03:07and the president's own
03:08advisors convince the
03:10president that he needs
03:10to continue to focus
03:11on the midterms.
03:13A lot of this week,
03:14as you saw here on The Source,
03:15was spent clashing
03:16with his own party
03:17when it comes to the Iran war
03:18over that voting bill
03:20that he's demanding
03:21but doesn't have enough
03:22Republican votes on.
03:23Instead of focusing
03:24on issues like affordability,
03:26including, of course,
03:27his refusal to sign
03:28that bipartisan housing bill
03:30until he gets
03:31the election bill first.
03:35We're doing very well
03:36with Iran.
03:37They've been decimated
03:38and we're making a deal
03:39with them and we'll see
03:40how that all goes.
03:47Thank you.
03:48Mr. Secretary.
04:00We also fix the reflecting pool.
04:03In fact, if you go over there
04:04right now, it looks very good.
04:06They put, somebody said,
04:07fertilizer in the water.
04:08If you put fertilizer
04:09in the water, you get algae
04:10and it'll be back to health
04:11pretty soon.
04:14Thank you.
04:15Thank you.
04:29President Trump's claims
04:31about Iran's ballistic missile capability
04:33just aren't adding up.
04:34One of his stated goals
04:35was to destroy Iran's missile capability
04:38in its entirety.
04:39We are going to destroy their missiles
04:41and raise their missile industry
04:43to the ground.
04:44It will be totally obliterated.
04:46Then, as the war continued,
04:48the president argued
04:49that the U.S. was close
04:50to achieving that goal.
04:52How are you?
04:52At the G7 summit in France,
04:54he made the stunning case
04:55that actually,
04:56Iran should be able
04:57to have ballistic missiles.
04:58I mean, they have to have some
04:59because other people have some.
05:01They've got to have some.
05:02Now the president is back
05:03to claiming that Iran's missile capability
05:05is gone entirely.
05:07Now we're leaving Iran
05:08with no Navy,
05:09no Air Force,
05:10no anti-aircraft,
05:11no missile capability,
05:14no nuclear program.
05:15Come back and try
05:16with us on the plane.
05:20The president is digging in
05:22on that unproven claim
05:23that vandals caused the damage
05:25at the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool.
05:27Somebody went in with a knife
05:28and cut it.
05:29They cut it up good.
05:30And then they cut a 200,
05:31350-foot slip
05:32in the form of lots of little slips.
05:35If you had a knife,
05:36you can't even cut it.
05:37It's so strong.
05:38It is beautiful, sealed.
05:40All eyes are on New York,
05:41where the polls have just closed
05:43in several marquee primary races
05:44and what could be a major test
05:46of where the party is headed
05:47come November.
05:48I'm going to do something
05:49a little unusual here.
05:50Not many candidates are on CNN
05:51when they hear this music.
05:56But we do have breaking news
05:57and we can now project
05:58that Bradlander will defeat
06:00the incumbent Congressman Dan Goldman
06:02in the Democratic primary.
06:03What is your first reaction to this?
06:05Well, thank you.
06:06First of all, obviously,
06:06I'm thrilled.
06:07I did not expect to be on air
06:09when the race was called.
06:10These are the fights
06:11that matter to us.
06:12And all I can say is
06:13I promise to go out
06:14every single day
06:15and fight for my constituents
06:17and the values that they have.
06:28I think we had a really great meeting.
06:30For the most part,
06:31we have a really well-unified party.
06:35Hey, Mr. Secretary,
06:36right around here.
06:37Keep going.
06:38Keep going.
06:39If he thinks he can reach them,
06:41definitely.
06:42Thank you so much for being here.
06:43Last week at the G7 summit,
06:45the president actually made the case
06:46for Iran to have ballistic missiles,
06:48saying that if Saudi Arabia has them,
06:49so should they.
06:50Do you agree that Iran
06:51should have ballistic missiles?
06:52He always had a consistent position
06:54as an alliance with the United States,
06:56all the 32 nations,
06:57that Iran should never get its hand
06:59on the nuclear capability.
07:01This country exporting chaos,
07:02exporting terrorism.
07:03So what about ballistic missiles?
07:05I really want to focus
07:06on the nuclear capability.
07:11I think a lot of those Republican senators
07:12thought that the president
07:13was coming in there today
07:14to give them an earful
07:15about the Save America Act.
07:17The president was much angrier
07:18about the War Powers vote
07:20that passed last night.
07:21Republicans had crossed the aisle
07:23and rebuked him, essentially,
07:24by voting for that.
07:25And so he spent the majority
07:26of that lunch
07:27focusing on the War Powers vote,
07:29getting into that shouting match
07:30with Senator Cassidy.
07:32The president is standing firm
07:34against signing that housing bill,
07:36which his own team argues
07:37would make a big difference
07:38for millions of Americans.
07:39When the president first announced
07:41that he was not going to be
07:41signing this bill today,
07:43what was your first reaction?
07:44I thought it was some kind of joke.
07:45For the first time ever
07:47in American history,
07:48this bill says private equity,
07:51stay out.
07:52Democrats and Republicans said,
07:53here's something that would help
07:55in my community,
07:56and that's what we did.
08:03There is a frustration
08:05the president has expressed
08:06about the unwillingness
08:08of Senate Democrats
08:09to do anything
08:10that follows common sense.
08:11No snaps.
08:12No snaps.
08:18The lovely country of Iran.
08:20It's a beautiful place.
08:21Would anybody like to go there?
08:22We're going to be taking
08:23some of their money
08:24and we'll spend it
08:25and we're going to be buying
08:26wheat, soybeans, and corn,
08:27a lot of it.
08:29It was more than three hours
08:30at the White House,
08:31enough time for House Speaker
08:33Mike Johnson to convince
08:34President Trump to sign
08:35that bipartisan bill
08:36he's refusing to put his name on.
08:39Do you think United States farmers
08:40are actually going to benefit
08:42at all from unfrozen billions
08:44of dollars that could
08:45potentially go to Iran?
08:46The president, the vice president,
08:47and their supporters are,
08:49I think the expression is,
08:50doing their best to put
08:51lipstick on a pig.
08:52The Iranian regime is not known
08:53for their truth-telling either,
08:55but no, of course they're not
08:56going to use this to strengthen
08:57the American farm sector.
08:59The wins that we saw this week
09:00from several Democrats,
09:02including racists here in New York,
09:03we've seen the response,
09:04especially where establishment Democrats
09:06were ousted in those primaries.
09:07Inside both parties,
09:08you're going to have a more moderate
09:09and pragmatic wing,
09:10and then you're going to have
09:11some people that are
09:11a little bit explosive.
09:12For these members who have been,
09:14you know, newly nominated
09:15to be the Democratic candidates,
09:16be bold, be bold,
09:17but remember that boldness
09:19without the action
09:20that gets you a congressional majority
09:23is worth nothing.
09:27And on that note,
09:28my political sources
09:29are here tonight,
09:30including the former Democratic
09:31mayor of New York,
09:32Bill de Blasio,
09:33and the Trump-endorsed Republican nominee
09:35for governor of New York,
09:36Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman.
09:38And thank you both for being here.
09:40Mr. Mayor,
09:41when you hear what Congressman Jim Himes
09:43is saying there,
09:44he was saying what works in Brooklyn,
09:46you know,
09:47might be work there,
09:48even though he was critical
09:49a lot of the language
09:50that some of the candidates
09:51this week had used,
09:52the one this week had used,
09:53but he's saying that
09:54that's not going to work
09:55when it comes to building
09:56a House majority.
09:57Do you think he has a point?
09:59I think it's fair to say
10:00people judge you
10:01by what you get done.
10:02And right now,
10:03we have Mayor Momdani,
10:04for example,
10:05who is following through
10:06on his campaign commitments,
10:08major steps towards
10:09universal child care,
10:10for example,
10:11the rent action
10:12that was taken this week
10:12to freeze the rent
10:13for a couple million New Yorkers.
10:15So that's when you take
10:16the ideas,
10:17the big, intense,
10:18you know, passionate ideas,
10:19and you put them into action
10:20and people feel it.
10:21So on that level,
10:22I agree with Himes.
10:23But there's something else
10:24going on here.
10:24The public is looking
10:26for change.
10:27They're looking for
10:27fundamental change.
10:28And they want to know
10:30candidates are on their side.
10:31So for example,
10:31a candidate who's willing
10:32to say,
10:33yeah, the wealthy are not
10:34paying their fair share
10:35in taxes.
10:35They need to pay more.
10:37That is a candidate
10:38that can get through
10:38to the American people.
10:39It doesn't mean they're
10:40going to get that legislation
10:41passed instantly.
10:42But they're showing
10:43a direction that people
10:44desperately feel
10:45because the status quo,
10:47the economic status quo,
10:48is not working
10:49for the vast majority
10:50of Americans.
10:51And Mr. Blakeman,
10:51you commented on the races
10:53that happened this week,
10:54including one in particular.
10:55And this is what you said
10:56about the outcome.
10:59And Brad Lander,
11:00he's a disgrace.
11:02He's anti-American.
11:03He's anti-Semitic.
11:04Even though he's Jewish,
11:06this guy would be
11:07a camp guard
11:07in the concentration camp
11:09if he could.
11:09He's a disaster.
11:11He's terrible.
11:14Brad Lander is Jewish.
11:15Do you stand by that comment?
11:16I certainly do.
11:18I mean, this is a guy
11:19who embraces people
11:21who will not admit
11:23the atrocities
11:25that occurred
11:25on October 7th.
11:26He stands with people
11:28who say river to the sea,
11:29basically to eradicate
11:31the Jewish state of Israel.
11:32He is someone
11:33who denigrates people
11:35who feel the same way
11:37that I do,
11:38that Israel should have
11:39a right to exist
11:39as a Jewish state.
11:41So yes, I think
11:42he's either a collaborator
11:43or he's a coward.
11:45And either one of them
11:46is unacceptable
11:46in my opinion.
11:48But he believes
11:48that Israel has a right
11:49to exist.
11:50I mean, he's Jewish.
11:51You're likening him
11:52to a Nazi?
11:53No, I don't believe
11:53he believes that Israel
11:54has a right to exist.
11:56I think as a Jewish state,
11:57he's never said that.
11:58He basically feels
11:59that it should be sorted out
12:01some way
12:02with the Palestinians.
12:04Listen, the Palestinians...
12:05His own opponent
12:06called him a Zionist.
12:08I mean, that's what
12:08Dan Goldman said
12:09about Brad Lander.
12:10Well, that's his opinion.
12:11My opinion is
12:12he's not a Zionist.
12:14He's somebody
12:15that denigrates
12:16the Jewish state
12:17and he stands
12:18with people
12:19who would seek the harm.
12:20What has he said
12:20criticizing Jewish people?
12:22Well, he stood
12:22with people
12:23who support
12:23the Palestinians
12:24who attacked
12:25on October 7th.
12:27He stands with people...
12:28You said he criticized Jewish people.
12:29Wait, wait, just a second.
12:29What has he said
12:30that it's critical
12:30of Jewish people?
12:31He stands with them
12:32and he's with them.
12:33He says that he believes
12:35in Palestinian human rights
12:36but he doesn't talk
12:36about Israel's right
12:38to exist as a Jewish state.
12:40And he also...
12:41Let's talk about
12:42some of the other things
12:43that he says.
12:44that Israel has a right to it,
12:45that there has a right
12:46for a Jewish state.
12:47I think the question, though...
12:49He talks about genocide
12:50in Gaza
12:51when there was no genocide
12:52in Gaza.
12:53What you had
12:54was you had
12:54a military action
12:55with military objectives
12:57on the part of Israel.
12:59Take that in contrast
13:01to Hamas
13:02which raped women,
13:05cut off babies' heads,
13:06and shot people
13:07that were unarmed.
13:09So when you compare that,
13:10there's no moral...
13:11But in what instance...
13:12Well, I mean,
13:13talk about a moral equivalency.
13:14You're likening him
13:15to a Nazi guard.
13:18Well, he's a collaborator.
13:18That seems like
13:19a false moral equivalency,
13:20does it not?
13:21No, no, he's a collaborator.
13:22There's no question
13:23in my mind.
13:23He's either a collaborator
13:24or a coward.
13:25And what is that distinction?
13:26I saw you said that
13:28to the New York Times.
13:29What is the distinction
13:29in likening someone
13:30to a Nazi concentration...
13:32Well, you have to know
13:33World War II history.
13:34You have to know
13:35about the Holocaust.
13:35And the collaborators
13:36were people
13:37who were Jewish
13:38who would identify
13:40Jewish families,
13:41Jewish children
13:42that were in hiding.
13:42I understand the facts.
13:43I'm saying,
13:44what is the difference
13:45in the distinction
13:45you're making
13:46in terms of Mr. Bradlander?
13:48The distinction I'm making
13:49is that the fact
13:50that he is Jewish
13:51has nothing to do
13:52with his positions.
13:54As a matter of fact,
13:56being a Jewish person,
13:57a Jewish public official,
13:59it should be his responsibility
14:01to speak out
14:02and speak the truth.
14:04The state of Israel
14:06is a democracy.
14:07They have human rights.
14:08They have an independent judiciary.
14:10They have religious freedom.
14:12Those are all things
14:13that you don't have
14:13in Palestine.
14:14But criticizing...
14:15In Palestine,
14:15they take...
14:16Criticizing the Israeli government...
14:17In Palestine,
14:17they take people who are gay
14:18and they throw them off buildings.
14:20Criticizing the Israeli government
14:21is not saying
14:22that Israel doesn't have
14:23a right to exist.
14:24If you only criticize Israel.
14:26You know,
14:27there was 120,000
14:29African Christians
14:30who were murdered
14:31over the last two years.
14:32and nobody said
14:34anything about that.
14:35But they could criticize Israel.
14:37Nobody talked about
14:38the thousands of people
14:39who are being killed
14:40by Iran each and every day.
14:42They only sing out loud Israel.
14:44If Israel is your only issue,
14:46you're an anti-Semite.
14:47I appreciate...
14:48I appreciate the straw man
14:48argument there.
14:50This idea that we're not
14:51talking about Iran
14:51is just not true.
14:52He has criticized Hamas.
14:54What's not true about Iran?
14:56He has...
14:56You're not killing innocent people?
14:58You're saying that people
14:58aren't covering that.
14:59We are covering that.
15:00That's not related to you saying...
15:01I'm not talking about
15:02CNN.
15:03I'm talking about Brad Lander.
15:04...would be a camp guard
15:05in the concentration camp
15:06if he could.
15:07Yeah, well, listen.
15:09I think a collaborator
15:10and a prison guard
15:10are the same thing.
15:12But he's Jewish,
15:13and you're saying
15:13that if he could,
15:14that he would help
15:16kill Jewish people?
15:17Caitlin, can you understand
15:18the fact that
15:19the fact that he is Jewish,
15:21he has a responsibility
15:23to speak up and say
15:25the Jewish state
15:26has a right to exist.
15:27And he said...
15:27They have a right
15:28to self-determination.
15:29He has said that, sir.
15:30No, he hasn't said that.
15:31Yes, he has.
15:32And he stands with people...
15:33Brad Lander has said
15:34that Israel has a right to exist.
15:36He stands with people
15:36and he's endorsed people
15:37who say from the river
15:38to the sea.
15:39Brad Lander has said...
15:39Chevalier says
15:40the river to the sea.
15:41Chevalier...
15:42We're not talking about her.
15:42We're talking about Brad Lander
15:44right now.
15:44But he stands with her.
15:45We're talking about Brad Lander.
15:47Exactly.
15:48And you said that he's
15:49like a concentration guard.
15:50So you don't think
15:51there's guilt by association?
15:53I think that likening something
15:54to the Holocaust
15:55is pretty off limits.
15:57Not for me.
15:58I mean, clearly...
15:59Not if it's true.
16:00I mean, Brad Lander
16:01responded and said...
16:02Standing up for
16:03Palestinian human rights
16:04doesn't make me
16:05any less proud
16:06to be Jewish
16:06or serious
16:07about fighting anti-Semitism.
16:08That's what he says.
16:09That's not what I say
16:10and that's not what
16:10a majority of
16:11Jewish Americans say.
16:12So the fact of the matter
16:14is both my parents
16:15were World War II veterans.
16:16My mother joined the army.
16:18Okay?
16:18We believe in freedom.
16:20We believe in religious freedom.
16:22Brad Lander is somebody
16:24who I believe
16:25is antithetical
16:26to Jewish principles
16:27and he is a critic
16:29of the state of Israel
16:30but not a critic...
16:32He's a critic
16:32of the Israeli government.
16:34Well, you and I
16:35are going to have to agree
16:36to disagree on this.
16:36He's criticizing Prime Minister
16:37Netanyahu's government.
16:38We'll have to agree
16:39to disagree.
16:41Caitlin, I've known Brad Lander
16:42for several decades
16:43and he's extremely proud
16:45of his Jewish faith
16:47and he's devoted
16:47to his community
16:48and he believes
16:49that the state of Israel
16:50has taken a horrible direction
16:52and has done things
16:53that don't fit Jewish values
16:55and he's seen the slaughter
16:57of innocent families
16:59and children
17:00and that is not consistent
17:01with Jewish values.
17:02What's happened
17:03to the Palestinian people
17:04is what he's objecting to.
17:05It doesn't make him
17:06any less proud to be Jewish.
17:07Bruce, you owe him an apology
17:09to compare anyone...
17:11So you think there's
17:11a moral equivalency
17:12between October 7th...
17:14And the Jewish people
17:15being able to protect themselves
17:17from being attacked
17:18unprovoked,
17:20bombs, missiles going in,
17:22rockets going into Israel
17:24each and every day,
17:25an attack on people
17:27who were left-wing Jews
17:29at a concert,
17:31raped...
17:32No one is defending that, sir.
17:34You're making an argument
17:35that's not...
17:35You're responding to an argument
17:37that's not being made here.
17:38...for the people
17:39who feel...
17:40He is not.
17:41...that Israel doesn't
17:42have the right to defend themselves.
17:43Bruce, he's not.
17:44First of all,
17:44just do the right thing
17:45and apologize to him
17:46because to compare anybody
17:48to an official of the Nazi regime
17:50is unacceptable in our politics.
17:51This is a guy
17:52who is proud of his faith.
17:53In fact, because he's Jewish,
17:56he would like to see
17:56the state of Israel
17:57conform to the values
17:59that he believes
18:00are part of the Jewish faith
18:01of being compassionate
18:02to people
18:02and fair to people.
18:03And what he saw Netanyahu do,
18:05in his view,
18:06I'm not speaking for him,
18:08I'm interpreting.
18:08He believes that what Israel did
18:10went against Jewish values
18:12and he stood up and said,
18:14in the name of humanity,
18:15this has to stop.
18:17Now, for him,
18:17as a proud Jewish person...
18:18What does he say
18:19about the Palestinians?
18:20What does he say
18:20about Hamas?
18:21He also, I'm quite certain,
18:22does not believe in violence
18:23against the Jewish people
18:24from Hamas.
18:25How come he doesn't say that, Bill?
18:26Bruce, you don't know that,
18:27so don't even say it.
18:28Everything you're saying
18:29he hasn't said.
18:29These are all statements
18:30that he has that.
18:30You've looked at everything
18:31he's said since October 7th.
18:32Look, the vast majority of us
18:34on October 7th said
18:34that was a horrible...
18:35Yes, I did my research.
18:36We saw a horrible massacre
18:37by Hamas.
18:38It was unacceptable.
18:39It was terrorism
18:39of the worst kind.
18:40And at the same time,
18:41we can say
18:42what Netanyahu's government
18:43has done to innocent
18:44Palestinian people
18:45is also unacceptable.
18:47You can say both those things.
18:48to innocent Palestinian people.
18:49They're defending themselves.
18:51It's the Palestinians...
18:52So, just to be clear,
18:53this is not a...
18:54It's the Palestinians
18:55that hide bombs
18:56and ammunition
18:57and weapons
18:58under schools,
19:00in hospitals.
19:01They put their people
19:02out there as shields.
19:04Mr. Blakeman,
19:05no one on this set
19:06is defending Hamas.
19:07Then don't.
19:08I'm asking you
19:09about your statement
19:10likening a Jewish politician
19:12to a Nazi concentration camp guard.
19:14I think as a Jewish politician...
19:16And you're saying
19:16you stand by it
19:17and you don't plan
19:18to apologize for it.
19:19He had a responsibility
19:19to speak the truth.
19:20Is that right?
19:21And I don't think
19:21he speaks the truth.
19:22Is that right
19:22that you don't plan
19:23to apologize for it?
19:23I don't think that he is
19:24someone who supports
19:25the state of Israel.
19:26I think that he blows
19:28with the wind.
19:28I think he's totally malleable.
19:30So do you plan
19:31to apologize for this statement, sir?
19:32I am not changing my statement.
19:34And when you say collaborator,
19:35you mean a Nazi collaborator?
19:37He is a collaborator
19:38with people
19:39who want to harm
19:39the Jewish people.
19:40Yes, I will admit to that.
19:42That is my statement against him.
19:44Mr. Blake, Mr. Mayor,
19:46I'm not sure we can continue
19:47the segment for there,
19:48but thank you both so much.
19:49Up next,
19:50we are learning about
19:51a hoax that targeted
19:52the former
19:53Transportation Secretary
19:54Pete Buttigieg
19:55that led to officers
19:56to separate him
19:57from his children
19:57for 24 hours.
19:59Also tonight,
19:59TMZ says it's gotten
20:00an email from someone
20:01claiming to have video
20:02of Nancy Guthrie
20:03after she was kidnapped.
20:04The founder
20:05and executive producer
20:06of TMZ will join me
20:07right after this
20:07with the new information.
20:13Tonight,
20:13the former Transportation Secretary
20:15Pete Buttigieg
20:16says a false,
20:17politically motivated report
20:18to the Michigan police
20:19led to him
20:20being temporarily separated
20:21from his four-year-old twins.
20:24According to Buttigieg,
20:25a Michigan State police officer
20:27and a Child Protective Services worker
20:29both came to his home
20:31after they got
20:31an anonymous report
20:32alleging that he posed
20:34a danger to his children.
20:36He said the authorities
20:37arranged forensic interviews
20:39for his young twins
20:40and instructed him
20:41not to be alone with them
20:42until those interviews
20:44were complete.
20:45Buttigieg writes tonight,
20:46quote,
20:47I'm a reasonable man.
20:48I try to keep as calm
20:49and low-key as possible,
20:50but I cannot describe
20:52the mix of rage
20:53and sadness
20:54that I feel
20:55at the idea
20:55that someone
20:56brought our children
20:57into this.
20:58They are four years old.
21:00Four.
21:01They do not know
21:02or care
21:03what a Democrat
21:03or a Republican is.
21:05For God's sake,
21:06they are just kids.
21:08Joining me tonight
21:09is CNN's
21:10Senior Law Enforcement Analyst
21:11and the former FBI
21:12Deputy Director
21:13Andrew McCabe.
21:14And Andy,
21:15I mean,
21:16it's pretty stunning
21:18to read this,
21:19that Pete Buttigieg
21:20was separated
21:20from his children
21:21for 24 hours
21:23until those interviews
21:23could be conducted,
21:24and he had no idea
21:25what this allegation
21:27was in those,
21:28in those period of time.
21:30Only when he sat down
21:31with the officer
21:33and the CPS worker,
21:34they were told
21:35an anonymous caller
21:36had contacted CPS.
21:38The caller said
21:38they had spoken
21:39to a woman
21:39who claimed
21:40to have met me
21:41at a conference
21:41in Alabama
21:42where she said,
21:43I told her
21:43that I had committed
21:44unspeakable violent crimes
21:46and the caller
21:47believed my children
21:47were still at risk.
21:49That was all.
21:50I mean,
21:51Buttigieg goes on
21:51to say he was never
21:52in that town
21:53in Alabama.
21:54This obviously
21:55never happened.
21:56When you look at this
21:58and you hear about this,
22:00is it that easy
22:01for a call like this
22:02to be made
22:03and a parent
22:04to be separated
22:05from their children
22:06as he was?
22:10You know,
22:10it's striking,
22:12Caitlin,
22:13and it's almost
22:13excruciating to read
22:14because you don't learn
22:15that part
22:16of what was the,
22:18you know,
22:18what were the circumstances
22:19of the call
22:20that led
22:20to this visit
22:21from the authorities
22:22to the very end
22:24and my hat's off
22:26to Secretary Buttigieg
22:27for having the courage
22:28to reveal all this publicly
22:30but,
22:30you know,
22:31it's a,
22:32that's a tough question
22:33to answer
22:33because every state
22:34and oftentimes counties
22:36and cities
22:36have different authorities
22:38that are responsible
22:39to check in
22:41on children
22:42when a complaint
22:43or information
22:43has been received
22:44and the regulations
22:45around that
22:46are very different,
22:47you know,
22:47state to state.
22:49I have to say
22:50that getting,
22:51reading the details
22:52of what the complaint was,
22:55it was so specious.
22:57The police officer
22:59indicated he thought
22:59that it was political.
23:01It was secondhand hearsay.
23:04It seemed like
23:05maybe a few questions
23:06about have you ever
23:08been to this conference
23:09or have you ever been
23:09to this town in Alabama
23:11at the front end
23:12might have been enough
23:13to resolve their,
23:14their concerns.
23:15But again,
23:16I don't know
23:16what sort of requirements
23:17and policy there are
23:18in Michigan
23:18and the state
23:19of Michigan
23:19for these sorts
23:21of visits.
23:21Yeah,
23:22and he defends
23:23the officer
23:24and the CPS worker
23:25who says,
23:25you know,
23:26they're obviously
23:27doing their jobs here
23:28and their jobs
23:29are incredibly serious
23:30to protect children
23:31who are facing
23:32real and serious
23:33danger and threats.
23:35But when you read this,
23:36you know,
23:36he started out
23:38by talking about swatting,
23:39which happens
23:39to politicians,
23:40celebrities all the time,
23:41where someone calls 911,
23:43says something heinous
23:44is happening
23:44at this address
23:45and people show up,
23:46you know,
23:47guns blazing,
23:48thinking that that is happening.
23:50And in reality,
23:51it's just to terrify
23:52that target.
23:53I mean,
23:54I just wonder
23:55what it says to you
23:56about the political landscape
23:58in this moment.
24:00Yeah,
24:01it's just such a horrible statement
24:02about where we are.
24:04And, you know,
24:05I guess you have to say,
24:06like,
24:06there's a limited number
24:08of people that are doing this,
24:09but those people
24:09really have gone
24:10so far over an edge
24:12with their partisanship
24:13that it's,
24:14I don't know that
24:15you come back from that.
24:16I can say this
24:17as someone,
24:18I've experienced this
24:19very personally.
24:20I've been swatted
24:21several times.
24:22My family's endured
24:24the fright
24:25and the terror
24:26that comes from
24:26having a police response
24:27at the House.
24:28Fortunately,
24:28my local sheriff's office
24:30is amazing
24:31at how they handle
24:32these things
24:33and they do it
24:34in as low-key
24:35a way as possible.
24:36But it's,
24:38when it happens
24:39to you,
24:40you realize
24:41the level
24:42of just antipathy
24:44and anger
24:45and deviousness
24:47there is out there
24:48obsessing on these targets
24:50and reaching out
24:51to try to interfere,
24:53to try to create fear,
24:54to try to harass you,
24:55to try to harass your family
24:57and the way
24:57that you live your life.
24:58It's just,
24:59it's just so despicable.
25:01It's hard to even imagine,
25:02but it happens
25:03very often.
25:05And it's just another aspect
25:06of this toxic political climate
25:08we live in
25:08that I guess
25:09we have to get used to.
25:10Yeah.
25:11It's atrocious
25:12and awful
25:13that it happened
25:14to his family
25:15or to anyone's family
25:15that it could happen to them.
25:17Andrew McCabe,
25:18thank you for joining us tonight.
25:20Thanks.
25:21Up next here on The Source,
25:22it has been nearly five months
25:23since Namby Guthrie
25:24was taken from her Arizona home.
25:26TMZ just got a new email
25:27from someone claiming
25:28to have video of her
25:29and the people
25:30who kidnapped her.
25:32Their founder,
25:32Harvey Levin,
25:33who read that email,
25:34will join me right after this.
25:41It has now been
25:42more than 145 days
25:44since Nancy Guthrie,
25:45the mother of
25:46Today Show anchor
25:47Savannah Guthrie,
25:48was reported missing.
25:49Tonight,
25:50there is a potential development
25:51in her kidnapping
25:52because TMZ says
25:54they have received
25:54a letter from someone
25:55claiming to know
25:56who Nancy's kidnappers are.
25:59The outlet says
26:00the individual
26:00who sent the letter
26:01writes that they have,
26:02quote,
26:02video of the main guy
26:04and Nancy
26:04and that they have,
26:06quote,
26:06a phone stashed
26:07in a secure location.
26:08What it contains
26:09is my definition
26:10of delivering them
26:11on a silver platter.
26:13A short video
26:14of the main guy
26:15with Nancy,
26:15the day that was
26:16probably her last.
26:18Pictures have both involved
26:19names and addresses
26:21and age.
26:22Now,
26:23the author references
26:24a, quote,
26:24old Bitcoin address
26:25and an alias
26:26that matches
26:27a previous demand letter
26:28and is also asking
26:30for one Bitcoin,
26:32which is roughly $60,000.
26:34I should note
26:34that CNN has not
26:35independently reviewed
26:36or verified the note
26:37that was sent to TMZ.
26:39TMZ doesn't have proof
26:40that whoever sent this,
26:41of course,
26:41is telling the truth.
26:42In the nearly five months
26:44since Nancy's disappearance,
26:46though,
26:46investigators have been
26:47pouring through
26:47the Guthrie family home,
26:49through miles of neighborhoods
26:50in her area
26:51and wilderness,
26:52troves of surveillance footage,
26:54most notably that video
26:55of the masked subject
26:57the night that she disappeared.
26:59The heartbreaking reality
27:00is that neither Nancy Guthrie
27:01nor her abductor
27:02or abductors
27:03have been found.
27:05My source tonight
27:06is the TMZ founder,
27:07Harvey Levin.
27:08And Harvey,
27:08I'm so glad to have you here
27:10because you obviously
27:11released this video.
27:12And since you released
27:13that video,
27:14you were asking
27:14for screen grab.
27:16A screen grab is proof.
27:17Have you heard
27:18anything new since then?
27:21We have.
27:22So we received this email
27:25from this gentleman.
27:26By the way,
27:27we've gotten a dozen emails
27:29from this person
27:30that began days
27:32after the kidnapping.
27:33And it is the same person
27:35because we know that
27:36from the Bitcoin address.
27:37So we got this latest email
27:41early this morning.
27:42and we have no way
27:44of communicating him
27:46via email.
27:46It's a one-way street.
27:48So I did a social media post
27:50and essentially said,
27:51look,
27:52it's pretty clear to me
27:53because we've referred
27:55these over to the FBI
27:56every time we get them
27:57that they think
27:59you could be a fraudster.
28:00So come up with something,
28:02a screen grab.
28:03And he must have seen this
28:05because a couple hours later
28:06he sent another email
28:09saying he would not do that
28:10because he believes
28:12the metadata
28:12would track them to him.
28:16And he fears these kidnappers,
28:19at least this is what he's saying,
28:20that, you know,
28:21from the beginning
28:21he said
28:22he has some close association
28:25with these people,
28:26although he insists
28:26he's not involved,
28:27and says that he's afraid
28:29they are going to go after him.
28:31and he doesn't even want
28:32to access the Bitcoin account,
28:34he says,
28:36until they catch the kidnappers.
28:38But he would not,
28:39he would not send us
28:41or send anybody a screen grab.
28:43He just would not do it.
28:44So, Caitlin, we don't know.
28:46I mean,
28:46we've referred it to the FBI.
28:48They tell us
28:50they are still looking
28:51to figure out
28:52who this guy is,
28:53and they said
28:54they've made progress.
28:55They told us that this week.
28:57But it's hard to figure out
29:00whether he's real or fake.
29:02I mean,
29:03I know that you've
29:04consulted lawyers.
29:05I mean,
29:05you've talked to the FBI.
29:06Is there anything else
29:07that the FBI wants
29:08this person to produce
29:09that would be able
29:11to help them know
29:11if it's real,
29:12beyond if a screen grab
29:14is not something
29:14they feel comfortable sharing?
29:18They didn't ask us
29:19to do that.
29:20We just felt,
29:21hey, you know,
29:23everybody,
29:23this is so unresolved,
29:25both, you know,
29:26at the FBI
29:26and certainly
29:27we can't figure it out,
29:28that we figured
29:29this would be a way.
29:31Now,
29:31I will tell you
29:32that a month ago,
29:35because,
29:35I don't know,
29:36I've always had a feeling
29:37this guy could be real
29:38for various reasons.
29:40I don't know that,
29:41but I had a feeling.
29:42So I contacted somebody
29:44that we've been dealing
29:45with at the FBI
29:45and said,
29:46look,
29:46what if we do a documentary
29:47and we actually pay
29:50the Bitcoin
29:50and see where it leads
29:52and we'd obviously
29:53keep you involved?
29:54And they told us
29:55that's interesting,
29:57let us run it up
29:57the flagpole.
29:59And then I contacted them
30:00a couple days later
30:01and they said,
30:02look,
30:02we're still thinking
30:03about this,
30:04so don't do anything yet.
30:06And then
30:08we kind of got ghosted
30:09for a month
30:10and we made
30:12a half dozen calls
30:13and they never returned it.
30:14We got a call
30:15a couple of days ago
30:16from the FBI
30:16and they said,
30:17look,
30:17don't do anything.
30:19We are,
30:21we have made progress.
30:22That's what they said
30:23in trying to figure out
30:24who this person is.
30:25So they seem
30:26to still be looking.
30:27So they just called you
30:28unprompted this week
30:30and said that
30:30they had made progress.
30:32Well,
30:32I had made
30:33six phone calls
30:34that were unreturned
30:35and they called
30:37presumably
30:38to return that.
30:39Do you see
30:40any coincidence
30:41between the person
30:43sending this message
30:44now,
30:44who,
30:45as you noted,
30:45has emailed you guys
30:46half a dozen times
30:47or a dozen times
30:48the same week
30:49that it was publicly reported
30:50that there was a note
30:52saying that Nancy Guthrie
30:53had died early on
30:55in this investigation?
30:57I think there's
30:58a direct connection.
31:00We hadn't heard
31:01from this person
31:01in several months
31:02and I think
31:04because it came back
31:05in the news
31:06that this person
31:09resurfaced
31:10because there's
31:11clearly interest in it.
31:12He wants this Bitcoin.
31:14That's pretty clear
31:15and I think
31:16he must have seen
31:17that this was
31:18a window for him
31:19because of all
31:20the attention.
31:22Yeah,
31:23look,
31:24it seems to me
31:26and,
31:27you know,
31:28stop me if you want,
31:29just that
31:31I've been looking
31:32at this
31:33and we received
31:34the first ransom note
31:35and it was very specific
31:37that this person
31:38wanted $4 million
31:40and if they didn't
31:42produce the $4 million
31:43by the deadline
31:44it became $6 million
31:45and if they didn't
31:47produce the $6 million
31:48by the deadlines
31:48they would kill
31:49Nancy Guthrie.
31:50They said it.
31:51They said it that way.
31:52That's stark.
31:53And then the second note
31:54which was revealed
31:55this week,
31:56you know,
31:57we know that the reporter
31:58from that
31:59Tucson station
32:00said there was nothing
32:01in this email
32:02about ransom money
32:04and it feels,
32:06at least to me,
32:07like whoever kidnapped
32:10Nancy Guthrie
32:11figured this is an easy
32:13payday
32:14and we'll release her
32:15and get all this money
32:16and then she dies
32:18on their watch
32:19and then it becomes
32:21a murder case
32:22because it's felony murder
32:24and they freaked out
32:26because they sent this note,
32:28that second note
32:29that surfaced this week
32:30and they never asked
32:32for money
32:33and they have completely
32:34gone radio silence since.
32:36So it feels like
32:37they didn't know
32:39what they were getting into
32:40when they got into it
32:41and then suddenly
32:42she dies
32:43and they freaked out.
32:44That's the way
32:45I see this thing.
32:46You had suggested
32:47to the FBI paying
32:48when you suggested
32:50this idea of a documentary.
32:51Now that this person
32:52has reached out again
32:55and has asked
32:55for one Bitcoin
32:56which is about 60 grand,
32:58is that something
32:59you're considering doing?
33:00No, I mean,
33:01we're not going to do anything
33:03without the FBI saying yes.
33:06We don't want to interfere
33:07in this investigation
33:08and frankly,
33:10I don't understand
33:12the thinking
33:14because sometimes
33:15it seems to me
33:16they discount this person
33:18but then I look
33:20and they, you know,
33:21they've contacted
33:22our IT team numerous times
33:24trying to figure out
33:26how to get to this person.
33:28So, you know,
33:29I'm getting mixed signals
33:31and we're not going to get
33:33in the middle of this.
33:34We've just offered it
33:35as a possibility
33:36but until they say yes,
33:39if they ever do,
33:40we're not going to do anything.
33:42Every time it seems
33:43that you get this outreach
33:44that seems credible
33:45ever since Nancy Guthrie
33:46went missing,
33:47you've obviously been
33:48in contact with the FBI
33:49as you've made clear.
33:50Is there ever a moment, Harvey,
33:52where you get information
33:54or you get something,
33:55you relate to the FBI
33:56but how do you weigh
33:57knowing what to release publicly?
34:00I mean, just obviously
34:01as, you know,
34:03this is such a devastating moment
34:05for the Guthrie family
34:06but also out of concern
34:07of worrying about
34:08encouraging people
34:09who don't know anything
34:10who might be looking
34:11for a payday.
34:12How do you decide
34:12what to go public with?
34:15Yeah, I mean, look,
34:16we talk about it
34:17but I will say
34:18that we've had a,
34:20we've had regular contact
34:22with the FBI
34:22and especially, you know,
34:24at the beginning,
34:25you know, for the, you know,
34:27the whole time
34:27that this was in the news.
34:30when we received these,
34:32we would talk to the FBI
34:34and they would say,
34:36you know, release certain things,
34:38sure, release
34:39and other things don't
34:40and we didn't.
34:41You know, there were actually,
34:42there was one time
34:43when somebody from the FBI
34:45called and said,
34:47look, do a social media post
34:48and say that if you are faking this,
34:52if this is fraud,
34:54we will catch you,
34:55we will prosecute you,
34:56you will go to prison
34:57and they asked me to do that
34:59and we did
35:00and then the person responded
35:02by saying,
35:02this is not a fraud.
35:04I know that it's against law
35:05if it is,
35:06but it's not.
35:08Wow.
35:09Harvey,
35:10obviously,
35:10please keep us updated
35:11if you hear anything else
35:12from this person
35:13or from the FBI
35:14and thank you
35:15for joining us tonight.
35:18You bet.
35:20My next source tonight
35:21has a warning
35:22for the Democratic Party
35:23but also a plan.
35:25Ken Salazar
35:26is going to join me
35:26on what he says
35:27the Democrats got
35:28the Democrats.
35:28Vielen Dank.
