00:05hello there folks and a very warm welcome back to what's for tea is lovely to see you again
00:11and i hope that i find you all very well indeed and welcome back for this week's meals of the
00:17week and as you know we were away to chicago and washington all in it was about nine days we
00:23spent
00:23four nights in chicago and three nights in washington dc but with the you know the time
00:28changes and the connecting flights and all of that was about nine days all in so i'm just going to
00:34show you what we had whilst we were there and throw in some photos of things that we've seen you
00:38know
00:38that kind of thing so like i said thanks for popping over and let's get started so when we landed
00:44in
00:44chicago this is where we stayed it was called the royal sonesta and it was brilliant it was really
00:50centrally located and i had a gym so i was in the gym every day can you believe it but
00:56i am trying
00:56to keep up my routine and i'm starting to get there with a wee bit of shape in my arms
01:01and legs
01:02so on monday this was about 10 minutes away from the hotel and it was called the emerald loop we
01:08were
01:08actually in here a couple of times it's a bar and grill and this is what i had on monday
01:14so it was a
01:15chicken and vegetable curry there's naan bread and rice on here as well it's a sort of irish or very
01:21loosely irish themed place and like i said it was just nice and close to where we were we were
01:27knackered
01:27and hungry so this was absolutely fine not the best food in the world but it was really nice and
01:34then moving on to tuesday they say you have to try pizza and a hot dog and a burger when
01:39you get to
01:39chicago i am not the biggest lover of pizza but the rest of our party loved the pizza we're going
01:46to get
01:46the deep dish but it was going to take 45 minutes from ordering so i didn't bother so i had
01:52the
01:52chicken parmesan which was absolutely terrible but it was not what they're you know it's not what
01:57they're known for so i can you know forgive them for that it was very bland and watery and i
02:02was
02:02actually kicking myself i just got a pizza like everyone else but i didn't so this was giordano's
02:08fantastic pizza not sure about anything else then moving on to wednesday we went to the hot dog place
02:15which everybody goes to apparently this was portillo's and again really disappointed i mean
02:22the hot dog to me was just very average and it was cold the chips were very average i got
02:27a wee pot of
02:28chili which tasted just like canned chili which went in the bin same as the cheese sauce just went in
02:34the bin so yeah it was nice to have the experience because it was beautiful inside as you can see
02:40lovely theming classic old american theming but yeah the food to me was just a bit of a letdown and
02:46then moving on to thursday this was our last night so we decided not to chance it again just go
02:52back
02:52to the emerald loop because we really enjoyed this on monday and i got just a classic american burger
02:58with fries which was lovely the meat was lovely you know they did ask how i wanted the burger cooked
03:04which is a new one to me for a burger but i get this one well done and that was
03:09really enjoyable
03:10so this is just a quick look at the menu for those that like to see the menu and the
03:15prices i mean
03:16nothing was overly cheap as you can imagine where we went were two big cities so it's not going to
03:20be
03:21cheap but i think the prices were in line with each other you know nowhere was overly more expensive
03:26than anywhere else so yeah that's just a quick look at the menu and a wee shot from the outside
03:32as well
03:32so i went from chicago to washington dc which was about an hour and a half flight should have been
03:38a wee bit longer but the pilot made really good time so we got there earlier than expected and it
03:44was a lot warmer in washington as well which i was happy about because it was quite cold and windy
03:49in chicago as the windy city and we stayed at the hilton washington dc and 15 minutes from the hotel
03:57we
03:57found this amazing italian restaurant we were actually you know here we ate here for three
04:04nights the whole three nights that we were here just couldn't face going anywhere else we just loved
04:09this place so much so meeting mr what's for tea got the lasagna garlic bread and a sharing salad as
04:17well
04:17and this is the best lasagna i've ever had in my life everything is home cooked freshly prepared make it
04:24you know it's made using fresh pasta as well which they do make everything themselves and you really
04:31can tell that it's homemade it just melted in your mouth and then mr what's for tea tiramisu and i
04:38tried
04:38the cannoli which i've never tried before yeah and this was an experience all on its own i absolutely
04:44loved these wee things they were filled with a kind of lemon ricotta cheese oh it was just lovely and
04:51again
04:51just a quick look at the menu and this was probably the most expensive place we ate over the time
04:57we
04:57were in chicago and washington but it was well worth every penny we were just blown away by this place
05:04and like i said we did come here the three nights that we were here there were lots of places
05:09to eat
05:09lots and lots of italian places funny enough but the decor the atmosphere the service was just you know
05:16second to none so we did come back again the next night but i decided to have ravioli and this
05:23is
05:23six ravioli two of them have beef inside two have ricotta inside and two have spinach inside and it's a
05:29lovely tomato sort of creamy vodka sauce mr what's for tea had the lasagna again but this to me was
05:37better than the lasagna and i didn't think he'd get better than that lasagna but this just melted in the
05:43mouth as well so i thoroughly enjoyed the ravioli for the salad tonight we had the buffalo mozzarella
05:50and tomato or caprese salad and again we got the garlic bread which again is homemade you know
05:56everything is homemade and freshly made to order which you know you can tell and there is a huge
06:03difference when it's done that way and just a quick look at the menu as well at the things that
06:09we
06:09got and like i said the last night we were here we also went back here but again tried something
06:14different because we're so much in the menu he just wanted to try so this is the sunday and mr
06:20what's for tea has got the carbonara not like the carbonara i make this is more like a traditional
06:26carbonara using egg yolk and you know things like that and we went for the caesar salad instead of the
06:33other two and i got the chicken parmesan and look at the difference between this and the one i got
06:38from
06:38giardano's this is how it's meant to look and the taste again was just incredible so i've got a wee
06:45bit of pasta on the side with the marinara sauce and the chicken with the marinara sauce and the cheese
06:51on the top ever so simple really simply put together presentation was lovely and simple as well
06:58it's a very simple menu but what's here they just do so well so if you're planning a trip to
07:04dc or if
07:05you're coming over soon and you're in the dupont circle area i would highly recommend rosmarina
07:10d'italia for a wee food choice or option and their cocktails are fabulous as well so this was chicago
07:18downtown at night we much preferred chicago over washington it was just a prettier city there seemed
07:24to be more to do as well there were loads to do in washington if you're into you know sort
07:29of american
07:29history politics that sort of stuff lots of government official buildings to look at but
07:35yeah we much preferred chicago although in washington they did have the exorcist steps
07:39which if you're into horror or the macabre you'd probably quite enjoy having a look at that it was
07:45really quiet around there actually so obviously not many horror fans there when we were there but
07:50yeah it was fun to go and see and this as this was as close as i could get to
07:55the white house
07:56obviously the security is very high but you can do a guided tour but you've got to let them know
08:01weeks sometimes months in advance just to get security clearance but you can do a free guided
08:07tour you know if you do that in advance we also visited georgetown university which was stunning
08:13but there were loads of people so i've edited everyone out there must have been a graduation or
08:18something going on there are lots of you know students obviously wearing their gowns and then we went to
08:24visit the bean in chicago as well which is another must see or must do on your trip and again
08:30this is
08:30just another view of downtown chicago which was ever so pretty we also went to the wrigley field stadium
08:36and this was another view of the chicago skyline just from one of the walks that we did
08:42we also managed to get to the roastery quite a few times this is one of six roastery shops in
08:49the
08:49world so you've got one in seattle shanghai milan new york tokyo and chicago it's set over four floors
08:56and it's just absolutely massive there's a cocktail bar you've got your restaurant there's a merch shop
09:01and they've got blends and sort of specialty coffees but that you can only get in those locations which
09:06is amazing i went to giardelli's chocolate shop for a hot chocolate and some chocolate and then trader joe's
09:13with some of the biggest apples i've ever seen in my life in fact everything was just bigger all the
09:18food seemed to be just sort of blown up cartoon sized even the kit kats you could get in king
09:24size
09:25as well which are about double the size of the ones that we have in the uk and this is
09:30where we stayed
09:31in washington so it was just a standard hilton you know just as you would expect and just a view
09:36of
09:37washington downtown which is weird when you're walking around these places you feel as if you're in some
09:42kind of movie set or something it just doesn't seem real and then we went on one of the chicago
09:47river
09:48boat tours this is an architectural tour so i'll just let you hear a wee bit of this
09:53but both times were filmed stunts one was for steve lecqueen's movie the hunter the other was for an auto
10:00insurance commercial now folks after the next bridge jumping ahead ahead to the right is a red brick
10:06building the brick building with the clock tower ahead to the right is the reed
10:14and this is just another view of the chicago skyline from navy pier like i said lots of
10:21beautiful buildings you know and lots and lots of people around we thoroughly enjoyed it but like i
10:26said we much preferred chicago to washington and this was me trying to get a picture of myself
10:31at the chicago bean i don't really get the bean it's just a big you know metal sculpture i don't
10:37know
10:37the history behind it if there is any it's just something that folk like to go and look at and
10:42this was us leaving to go home and it was a night flight so our flight left at the back
10:48of 10 at night
10:48and it was quite cold and rainy and this was us here just arriving back into edinburgh so thank you
10:55so
10:55much for watching and that's everything we ate not everything that we've seen because obviously we'll be
11:00here for hours but to show you everything that we've seen but one of the days managed to cloak up
11:0540 odd thousand steps so that just lets you know you know how many steps were taken on that wee
11:12trip but
