00:02:07It walked across the eons of time
00:02:11Slowly changing
00:02:13Becoming more and more human
00:02:18More and more advanced
00:02:22Until, in the Pleistocene
00:02:25Just thousands of years ago
00:02:27Man himself emerged
00:02:33But the change from beast into man
00:02:36Was not a steady one
00:02:38And sometimes primitive man
00:02:40Would find his life threatened
00:02:42Terrified by the appearance
00:02:45Of a monster from the past
00:03:02The End

00:07:33Whose house is this?
00:07:35This belongs to one of the museum association members.
00:07:38No one lives here right now,
00:07:40so we let this use the place whenever we want.
00:07:48All right, just want a few minutes.
00:07:53Sharon, look at these.
00:07:57Oh. Mr. Wyman, are these some of the things you found on your expedition?
00:08:01Yes.
00:08:02As a matter of fact, this is one we found in Stiffed Rue just last year.
00:08:08You can put your sleeping bags down on the floor.
00:08:11We'll straighten up tonight when we get back.
00:08:14Shall we go?
00:08:48This really looks like Indian's country, doesn't it?
00:08:50Boy, how are they?
00:08:51Look at those rocks.
00:08:53I'll bet you find quite a few Indian petroglyphs up in this area.
00:08:57Yes, this country was literally dotted with Indian campsites at one time.
00:09:01Mr. Mason, what are petroglyphs?
00:09:03Oh, well, petroglyphs are Indian rock riding.
00:09:07Come on with me and I'll show you some.
00:09:08Oh, well, petroglyphs are Indian rock riding.
00:09:20Well, great.
00:09:21He's guy.
00:09:24Thank you.
00:09:26How are you doing?
00:09:27Well, he's a little girl.
00:09:29There's also being a subway missed out.
00:09:29I'm dead.
00:09:29I'm dead.
00:09:29I have to bend my mind.
00:09:29I'm dead.
00:09:30How are you doing?
00:09:35I'm dead.
00:09:36Oh, I'm dead.

00:10:08Petroglyphs are Indian writings that have been scratched into the rock.
00:10:12These have been painted on the rock with berry juice stains.
00:10:15We call these pictographs.
00:10:17What do they say?
00:10:19Can you read it?
00:10:20We've been able to figure most of them out.
00:10:23They tell of the history of a great Indian tribe,
00:10:26one that lived around here thousands of years ago.
00:10:31There were two chiefs in the tribe, many, many braves.
00:10:36They hunted the deer and the rabbit with bows and arrows.
00:10:40And they believed that the sun and the rain were powerful gods
00:10:44who were continually fighting each other.
00:10:46Gee, how can you tell them that?
00:10:48We have to study these symbols a long time.
00:10:51Basically, though, this is just a big primitive history book.
00:10:54Hey, Bill, let me get a picture of that.
00:10:56I wonder if you'd just point at that.
00:10:59And the rest of you be looking at it.
00:11:02I'll get it from over here.
00:11:04That's a rabbit.
00:11:06Here there is.
00:11:07Oh, interesting.
00:11:10Bob, would you kneel down there and be looking at the rock?
00:11:20Now, that's good.
00:11:21Just look at the rock and hold it.
00:11:24Good.
00:11:27Got it.
00:11:28Now I guess we better get to work.
00:11:30Right.
00:11:31But where's the excavation?
00:11:32Right back this way.
00:11:35Come on.
00:11:38Come on.
00:12:02This is where we've begun excavation.
00:12:04What sort of thing do you suppose we might find?
00:12:06Well, that's pretty hard to tell.
00:12:08Well, the only thing we've located so far...
00:12:11Well, here.
00:12:11I'll show you.
00:12:19These are pieces of old Indian pottery.
00:12:25And these are prayer sticks.
00:12:33Prayer sticks?
00:12:34Mm-hmm.
00:12:35At least that's what we think they are.
00:12:37Prayer sticks were used by some of the ancient tribes as religious symbols.
00:12:41They actually buried them if they're dead.
00:12:44You mean we're going to dig in a graveyard?
00:12:48Well, that's possible.
00:12:49Though I doubt if we'll locate any bodies.
00:12:52These prayer sticks may be over a thousand years old.
00:12:55Say, do you think we'll find any bones?
00:12:58With everything being this old, it's very unlikely.
00:13:00But it's still possible.
00:13:02Of course, it's also possible we may not find the thing.
00:13:05It's true we won't find anything if we don't get busy.
00:13:08What are we supposed to do?
00:13:09I don't know.
00:13:10What do we do?
00:13:10Start digging.
00:13:11Okay.
00:13:12I don't know.
00:13:18I don't know.
00:13:30Can I keep something else in here?
00:13:42Sí, Bill, look at this piece of pottery
00:13:44that Bob found.
00:13:46You just found it, Bob?
00:13:48Yeah, over there in the digging.
00:13:50That's a good pottery fragment.
00:13:51I want to take this back to the museum with us.
00:13:54Keep up the good work.
00:13:55By the way, what time is it?
00:13:5720 after 12.
00:13:59Getting a little late.
00:14:01Lunchtime!
00:14:01Oh, boy.
00:14:04You boys ready for lunch?
00:14:06Boy, you said it.
00:14:08Good, I'll get it for the truck.
00:14:09I'll give you a hand.
00:14:10All right.
00:14:30Well, we have sandwiches here for everybody.
00:14:37Good.
00:14:38Johnny, this is yours.
00:14:39All right.
00:14:40Roger, this is yours.
00:14:44Here's Sharon's and Linda's.
00:14:45Oh, thank you.
00:14:47Bob.
00:14:58Well, I suppose you see now why most people don't like this part of museum work.
00:15:02You mean the food or the digging?
00:15:07By the way, did we find anything of value today, Mr. Wyman?
00:15:10Oh, yes.
00:15:13For instance, this rock.
00:15:15This was used to grind up seed to make flour for bread.
00:15:19Notice the worn edges on it?
00:15:22Hmm.
00:15:25And this pottery, we'll take it back to the museum and study it more carefully.
00:15:29I think we can tell exactly how old it is.
00:15:37More prayer sticks?
00:15:39Mm-hmm.
00:15:39More prayer sticks.
00:15:41Say, Mr. Mason, what's this rock?
00:15:45I don't know.
00:15:47I haven't seen anything quite like this.
00:15:50I found it over there where we were looking at those Indian photographs.
00:15:55That's Mr. Wyman about that.
00:15:57Say, Bill, take a look at this rock that Norman found.
00:16:03Where did you find this?
00:16:05Over there where you showed us those Indian writings.
00:16:09What's wrong with it?
00:16:13Nothing's wrong.
00:16:15This might be an eel in.
00:16:17What's that?
00:16:18A very, very old tool.
00:16:22One used by ancient peoples.
00:16:25This is by far the oldest thing we've found here.
00:16:29Hmm.
00:16:29Let me see it.
00:16:32Could you show us where you found that?
00:16:34Sure.
00:16:34It was right over there.
00:16:45It was right around here somewhere.
00:16:48It's just lying on top of the ground.
00:16:50I picked it up for a souvenir.
00:16:52I collect rocks.
00:16:54You collected a good one this time.
00:16:57Well, I don't see anything else.
00:16:58Well, all of these are just plain old rocks.
00:17:04Well, it seems funny that it'll be lying just on top of the ground, doesn't it?
00:17:08Well, I don't see anything else.
00:17:11Unless it fell...
00:17:13Up there.
00:17:14Maybe it fell from up there and rolled down.
00:17:16Yeah, it looks like there's a ledge up there.
00:17:19Let's go up and see.
00:17:20All right.
00:17:22You'll have to find some other place to get up, though.
00:17:24We'd never make it from here.
00:17:26I think I'll stay down.
00:17:28Me, too.
00:17:30We need a climbing rope in the truck.
00:17:33I'll get it.
00:17:40We'll be right back.
00:18:12We'll be right back.
00:18:37We'll be right back.
00:19:04We'll be right back.
00:19:34We'll be right back.
00:19:38¡Gracias por ver!
00:20:18Let's see, are we above the spot where the rock fell?
00:20:24Over there.
00:20:32Let's look around down here.
00:20:38Let's look around here.
00:21:25Let's look around here.
00:21:30Let's look around here.
00:21:32Let's go.
00:21:35Let's go.
00:21:36Let's go.
00:21:37Let's go.
00:21:38Let's see, we were standing down there by that thick brush.
00:21:43Hey, what's this?
00:21:57It's a stone tablet of some kind.
00:22:04It's really comfy.
00:22:05Yeah, it's a lot.
00:22:07Do you recognize those markings, Bill?
00:22:10No, no, those are strange to me.
00:22:13They look rather primitive, don't they?
00:22:16They look older than any other markings I've ever seen.
00:22:19Are they made by Indians, do you think?
00:22:21No, not these.
00:22:24These are the types of markings made by cavemen.
00:22:28Cavemen?
00:22:29Perhaps as ancient as Pithecanthropus erectus,
00:22:32the earliest known species of ape-men.
00:22:34Come on.
00:22:38Seems to be sealed along the edges here in mud.
00:22:43Yeah, I probably rocked it.
00:22:44Try digging it away over in there.
00:22:48Be careful not to hit the rock.
00:22:52How are we going to get it back to the truck?
00:22:54We're going to carry it back.
00:22:56You think we can get it out?
00:22:58Here's the bottom edge.
00:22:59All right.
00:23:00Careful.
00:23:02Let's try lifting it now.
00:23:07Boy, I'm going to put that in there when it's a clay.
00:23:10This isn't ordinary mud.
00:23:13Boy, it's a clay in some sort of rosin added.
00:23:17It's really hard.
00:23:18Maybe if we use the rock hammer to fry up on it.
00:23:21All right.
00:23:21Try it.
00:23:22I'm sure you won't break it.
00:23:24No, they won't break it.
00:23:25Okay, Bob.
00:23:26Pull.
00:23:29I think it moves a little.
00:23:30Not much.
00:23:31Let's try it again.
00:23:32Maybe if we lift up on it while the boys pull.
00:23:34All right.
00:23:37I'll count to three and everyone pull.
00:23:39Ready now?
00:23:40One, two, three, four.
00:23:45What's that?
00:23:46What happened?
00:23:49What happened?
00:23:50Wait a minute.
00:23:52There's a hole down there.
00:24:00That's right.
00:24:02That's right.
00:24:13I wish we had a flashlight.
00:24:15Can you see anything?
00:24:17Well, it looks like it might be a cave.
00:24:20What are you doing?
00:24:21I'm going down inside.
00:24:22Oh, my.
00:24:23Me, too.
00:24:24We can't all go in.
00:24:26Well, I'll stay up here.
00:24:28Will you stay up here, too, Roger?
00:24:31Well, all right.
00:24:33But you be careful.
00:24:58All right.
00:24:59Come on down.
00:25:02I'll go first.
00:25:03Okay.
00:25:08Now get a good grip on that rope.
00:25:10It's pretty solid.
00:25:13Good.
00:25:23Good.
00:25:25Good.
00:25:37Good.
00:25:38Good.
00:25:39Good.
00:25:39Good.
00:25:39Good.
00:25:40Good.
00:25:40Good.
00:25:41Good.
00:25:41Good.
00:25:41Good.

00:33:42¡Oh, bueno!
00:33:43¡Es algo así!
00:33:45This day certainly did go by fast.
00:33:48I only wish I would have gone with you guys
00:33:50when you climbed up on those rocks.
00:33:52That was quite an experience.
00:33:54And where were we?
00:33:55Waiting down below.
00:33:57Well, when I looked up and saw that ledge
00:33:59and that sheer cliff,
00:34:01well, I always feel a lot better on solid ground.
00:34:04So next week, all the newspapers
00:34:06are putting big stories about how we found a mummy.
00:34:09Maybe even magazines.
00:34:11Well, what's wrong with that?
00:34:12Yeah.
00:34:12All my friends will be asking me what I did.
00:34:15What happened?
00:34:16What did I do when I first saw that mummy
00:34:18lying there in that cave
00:34:20like it has been for thousands of years?
00:34:22And what am I going to tell them?
00:34:24That I didn't do anything
00:34:25because I wasn't even in the cave.
00:34:27I was too afraid to climb up on the rock.
00:34:30Well, you weren't alone.
00:34:32I can see the pictures on the front of the school paper
00:34:34of you guys prying up that stone thing.
00:34:37And all my friends asking me,
00:34:39where were you?
00:34:40Tell them you took the picture.
00:34:43Thanks.
00:34:45Well, I sure could go for a bottle of pop.
00:34:47The country store is open until nine o'clock
00:34:49if you want to walk up there.
00:34:52How far is it?
00:34:53If you cut through the orange globe,
00:34:55it isn't far.
00:34:56About a ten minute walk.
00:34:57There's a well-worn path,
00:34:59so you can't get lost.
00:35:01Want to walk up?
00:35:01Sure.
00:35:02Sounds like fun.
00:35:03Anybody else want to go along?
00:35:05So you plan on bringing in the rest of those jars
00:35:07for a closer look, don't you?
00:35:09Yes.
00:35:10And then I think I'll stay here.
00:35:12I think I'll go outside, too.
00:35:14For the fresh air.
00:35:15Yes, don't feel you have to stay inside.
00:35:18The country up here is pleasant at night.
00:35:20I'm too tired to go anywhere.
00:35:22Can you just stay on?
00:35:22It's sure that if I go out there,
00:35:24something important will happen here.
00:35:26And if I stay here,
00:35:27they'll probably find flying saucers.
00:35:29By the way,
00:35:30you can bring me back
00:35:31a bottle of orange pop if you want.
00:35:33Or at the dime.
00:35:37Come on.
00:35:39Come on, take it out.
00:35:45Ten-three cents deposit.
00:35:47Unless you want me to have to drink it there.
00:35:53Some people are nuts.
00:35:54Are you coming?
00:35:56No, I'm going to conserve my energy
00:35:57and stay here.
