00:00Oklahoma wins the Men's College World Series final.
00:03They win game three of the final against North Carolina.
00:06And Oklahoma takes home the Men's College World Series national championship.
00:11Peter Apple, your overall takeaways from Boomer Sooner so far this year,
00:16or I guess not so far this year, this season,
00:19because the college baseball season has officially come to a close.
00:21This was one of the most incredible runs that I have seen in my life watching sports.
00:28Now, I'm only 28 years old, but I believe it.
00:33And I'm going to tell you why I'm going to break down their run
00:36and put it in perspective of other sports if you're not much of a college baseball watcher.
00:41Just on the surface, this Oklahoma team, they finished 11th in the SEC this year.
00:4911th. In their final 10 games getting to the tournament, they went three and seven.
00:55Now, they earned a spot to this tournament, but they were kind of the March Madness equivalent
01:03of a 9-12 seed.
01:06And then what did they do?
01:08They beat the Citadel, who was a very solid team, and boat raced them.
01:13Then they beat three conference champions.
01:16Georgia Tech in the ACC, Kansas in the Big 12, and Georgia in the SEC.
01:22And they didn't just beat these teams.
01:27They won by a combined score of 107 to 41.
01:33And that's not even mentioning beating a ranked Alabama team as well.
01:37And then you get to the finals, where they take down a fantastic North Carolina team
01:44that won 50-plus games during the regular season,
01:47has an incredible ace in Jason DeCaro, who they put up seven runs against.
01:52And they beat them two out of three by a combined score of 24 to 11.
01:58In college baseball history, there's only been one team that has lost 30 games during the regular season
02:05and won the national championship.
02:07That was Fresno back in 2008.
02:10But the difference between this Oklahoma team and that Fresno team
02:14is this Oklahoma team had a starting rotation of all freshmen.
02:18You just don't see that in college baseball.
02:22And a lot of props has to go to their manager, Skip Johnson,
02:27who their Friday guy for the first half of the season for Oklahoma
02:31threw only one inning in the tournament.
02:35They did a complete 180 of their team, buying into these freshman arms.
02:40In the regular season, Oklahoma had an ERA above five.
02:44In the postseason, it was below three.
02:48They hit 48 homers in their first 46 regular season games.
02:52In their last 19, 47 homers.
02:57To put it in perspective of an MLB team,
03:00this is basically the equivalent of last year's Cincinnati Reds,
03:05when they went 83-79 and snuck into the final wildcard spot in the National League.
03:10Those Reds lost the Dodgers in two games.
03:14They got steamrolled.
03:15But imagine this.
03:17Those Reds swept the Dodgers.
03:20Then they swept the Phillies.
03:22Then they swept the Brewers.
03:24Then they beat the Blue Jays in five with game five,
03:27winning by a final score of 13-2.
03:30That is what we just witnessed.
03:33The 1985 Villanova basketball team is the lowest seed to win in March Madness.
03:38This was crazier.
03:40This is like the Suns sweeping the Thunder,
03:45beating the Lakers, sweeping the Spurs,
03:48and then beating the Knicks in five.
03:50I know I'm hammering it down
03:52because this was truly one of the most incredible runs
03:55I've ever seen in sports, period.
03:57Yeah.
03:58And listen, in terms of the societal impact,
04:01I don't know if it's as high as the 1985 Villanova Wildcats, right?
04:07I'm just not sure that it matches that.
04:09But I can hear what you're putting down
04:11and the fact that they did it with that much youth.
04:13We've got about 90 seconds left in this segment.
04:16But that youthful impact here,
04:18obviously you hope the portal doesn't decimate the Oklahoma Sooners.
04:22And, you know, we'll see because NIL talks
04:23and the portal talks and all that stuff.
04:25But at the end of the day, man,
04:27if Oklahoma can keep this together,
04:29why can't they be a steam engine next year?
04:31There's no reason that they can't.
04:33The problem was they weren't a steam engine
04:35during the regular season.
04:37That's why the run just is so unbelievably mind-blowing.
04:41And I also want to shout out Jackson Willits,
04:43who won Most Outstanding Player.
04:44He hit 500 during this tournament.
04:47And again, UNC was incredible.
04:49If we're talking about getting an NIL bag this offseason,
04:53Caden Glober of UNC,
04:55one of the best seasons by a reliever
04:57that we've seen again as a freshman,
04:59he's going to get a ton of money,
05:01or UNC is going to entice him to stay.
05:04But really, this was just,
05:06it's the reason why I love sports.
05:08Yeah.
05:09What Oklahoma just did.
05:10Because you can be the better team on paper,
05:13but who's best when we line them up?
05:15Who's best when the lights are brightest?
05:17And as the lights continue to get brighter,
05:20Oklahoma just got better.
05:23They only lost one game,
05:24beating opponents on average over their last 10 games
05:27by 5.4 runs.
05:28Unbelievable.
