00:00Jack Caglione that is the name of the game for the Kansas City Royals outfielder Caglione has
00:06been awesome in the month of June and that's on the heels of a really rough month of May this
00:11guy played 27 games in May hit 222 with a 640 OPS but in 19 games in the month of
00:18June Caglione
00:20sitting 357 with seven homers 16 driven in and an 1144 OPS Caglione is starting to tap into
00:29exactly who we thought he could be offensively and he's doing it in a way that seems a bit
00:36safer than what I was anticipating personally I think you and I were both like kind of watching
00:43what he did at Florida and seeing the swing and miss numbers and saying this might get
00:49really ugly dead points K rates right around 25 percent in June that would be awesome to see him
00:55sustain that no that was the big thing that I felt like I I pushed back on the the fear
01:02swing and miss
01:03was not the issue as much as I thought just the approach was and I think that was as I
01:09always
01:09tried to like lay out the case of like this guy is better bat to ball than I think you
01:14would expect
01:14from somebody with his power it's just he takes himself out of a bees because he was swinging at
01:22everything and we saw that you know ridiculous even in college but he could get to everything
01:26in college and hit anything out but then in the early going in his pro career like that was
01:30something that started to rear its head a little bit and so him even just cutting the chase rate
01:34from like north of 40 to below that I think helped in a big way as well I think now
01:39just that as well
01:40like being a little bit more selective has helped and his approach has helped and I think just settling
01:45in in general this is another player that you gotta remember like flew through the minor leagues
01:49learn a new position um and and I feel like did not get the same level of patience maybe than
01:56that some other players would maybe get I think it's kind of like hey what this guy is supposed to
02:01be
02:01the big power guy this is supposed to be our guy supposed to be our guy and I get it
02:04I get it was really
02:05bad last year but he was thrown into into the fire and for a player of that archetype I don't
02:10see I
02:10don't see guys like that succeeding and being rushed usually you're going to be a little bit more
02:14station to station so I just think understanding that it has not been that many professional games for
02:19him or reminder like he played the end of 24 he played 29 games at high a that's where we
02:23saw the
02:24the aggression kind of rear its head a little bit then in 25 it was 38 games in double a
02:2928 games in
02:31triple a and then straight to the shell so I mean he has already played if if I have the
02:37math right
02:37just about as many major league games as he's played minor league games and I don't think it's
02:40coincidence that as he's made that met that mark now you're starting to see him settle in it's 80 grade
02:45raw power like we've always talked about but it was two things it was is the approach going to do
02:49you in and then also is the approach slash swing path going to limit you from being able to get
02:54into that power enough because sometimes it would be flatter I think you're seeing him get into that
02:58power more consistently and you're seeing his approach not undermine him even if he's still
03:02going to be relatively aggressive as long as he's not you know top 10 percent in chase rate he's going
03:08to be able to get to enough I think to be the productive hitter that he's been and we're seeing
03:12that
03:12and can I tell you the most important pitch for Jack Caglione this year is oh oh it's the first
03:18pitch
03:18of every plate appearance and I'll give you some numbers to attach to that Jack Caglione on the first
03:23pitch of at bats so far this year he has put 44 of them in play he has 21 hits
03:29in 43 at bats so he's
03:32hitting 488 on the first pitch with four homers he's got a 1337 OPS on the first pitch of at
03:39bats now
03:40if he gets ahead one and oh he's hitting about 300 with a 980 OPS and six other homers have
03:46come
03:46after he gets ahead one or no if he falls behind nothing in one he's hitting 171 and he's slugging
03:53265
03:54the first pitch is the deciding pitch for Caglione over the course of at bats if you put it in
04:00play
04:00he's going to hit it hard if he doesn't put it in play and he falls behind nothing in one
04:04if he takes
04:05a strike or if he swings and misses the at bat totally skews in pitcher favor because you can
04:10go to secondaries you can get out of the zone and that's where the chase can kind of rear its
04:14head
04:14especially left on left so like this could be a bulk platoon bat but that's fine it's just
04:19fascinating to see those splits and say you know what might behoove you is be a lot like Corey Seager
04:24and just swing at the first pitch all the freaking time yeah and then I think now he's gotten to
04:29the
04:29point too where like it can keyhole it a little bit where hey if they know that and they're gonna
04:33try
04:34to get me to get myself out I'm I'm not gonna chase as much I think that's where you're seeing
04:37the maturity shine through and then one slight just like small mechanical thing is I think he's
04:43just moving a little bit less like there was some kind of late hand movement there it seems like he's
04:47a little a lot more still um and I think that's allowing his timing to be more consistent him to
04:51see the ball longer um and I don't think it's a coincidence that over the stretch he is demolishing
04:56change-ups he's demolishing breaking balls and he's staying back on those pitches because I think
04:59he's deciding later and he's he's not moving so late as well with those hands and starting I think
05:06a little bit more stacked and coiled onto the back side little adjustments for guys like that can make
05:11all the difference in the world I just talked about it with Bryce Eldridge and that piece will
05:14be live on just baseball.com today
