00:00It's all aboard for rail safety, as over 1,000-year six pupils have been taking part in interactive safety
00:07sessions as part of Lead Station Safety Week.
00:10The flagship initiative, now in its 10th year, has seen school groups from across West Yorkshire engage in a range
00:17of activities designed to bring safety lessons to life.
00:21These include exclusive access inside a real-life Northern train cab, as well as LNER's Driver Simulator Experience.
00:29Cross Country's Challenge has highlighted how passengers are kept safe during journeys, while the British Transport Police sessions have included
00:36demonstrations with police dogs.
00:38Rail and water safety discussions were held ahead of the summer holidays, delivered by Transpennine Express, Leeds Rhinos and the
00:45Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
00:47Charity Railway Children have also delivered awareness sessions.
00:51We'll have 30 schools going round seven different organisations that are holding activities to introduce the children to rail safety
01:02in all different aspects.
01:03So hopefully they'll have a great time, do some things that even adults who are in the rail industry don't
01:09get to experience, and go away with some great memories and a better understanding of the railway.
01:15I found it fascinating. It makes me wish I could go back to school for the day, and indeed in
01:19some ways I think I have done.
01:20But what a fantastic example of how we've all come together as a railway family to make the message of
01:27safety and understanding the railway, and even the fantastic opportunities for careers in the railway, amongst the great kids that
01:34we're meeting here this morning.
01:35Most people have never had a rail safety session to actually be able to advise to their children as they're
01:42growing up how to stay safe on the railway.
01:44So there's a lot of myths that need busting, and us going and doing an event like this enables us
01:50to not only give them messages, but do it in an engaging manner where it's more interactive and they get
01:57that greater understanding.
01:59As we know, with safety, there's a really important message to put out there, but it's even better if it's
02:04done in a creative and memorable way.
02:06And certainly what the kids are seeing here today, they're seeing LNER simulators, so they're understanding what it feels like
02:12to be a driver and the situations they might be confronted with,
02:15but also what it feels in a real live train that we have here all day to make kids understand
02:21how to get them on and off safely, but also the important role that our conductors and drivers play as
02:26well.
02:26So this year has definitely had the most volunteers. We've not only got the train operators, but there's Transpennine Route
02:34Upgrade, British Transport Police obviously support us every time,
02:38but we've got CAF Rail, CK Rail, Siemens, Balfour Beatty, Amy, their list just goes on of the organisations that
02:48are involved this time.
02:49So it really is that cross-collaboration of everybody from the railway industry supporting us.
02:55Some are travelling a very long distance, some are coming from London to actually support us.
