00:04This is Elm Tree Walk, which runs through the Temple Newsome Estate,
00:07one of several routes into the much-loved Leeds Landmark.
00:11It's now been closed to motor vehicle traffic
00:13in a bid to combat nuisance driving and antisocial behaviour.
00:18Two overnight closures are also in place at the entry points
00:21to the park from Colton Road and New Temple Gate,
00:24between 10pm and 6am.
00:26A consultation found that 72% of respondents were in favour of the measures.
00:32Leeds City Council's Executive Member for Environment,
00:35Councillor James Gibson, said that over the last few years
00:38Temple Newsome has sadly seen a significant increase
00:41in nuisance driving and antisocial behaviour.
00:44This has not only caused substantial damage to the park's grounds,
00:48Temple Newsome House and adjacent farm buildings,
00:51but has also impacted the nearby community,
00:53raising safety concerns among local residents and park visitors.
00:58This in turn has also resulted in high costs
01:01for ongoing maintenance and damage repairs.
01:03For all of these reasons, the council feel it is important
01:06to find a long-term solution,
01:08and that's why they're now trialling the road closures,
01:11which they're hoping will protect the grounds and house
01:13as well as improve the safety of the community.
01:15The closures are enforced by an experimental traffic regulation order
01:20that is enforceable for a maximum of 18 months.
01:23If successful, the council say they will communicate
01:26before any permanent next steps.
